It’s finally complete! So for context, I’m studying to be a cartoonist and at my school we have a junior thesis which involves adapting a scene from a book into a 6 page comic. I chose Be More Chill and this is the final product! Hope y’all enjoy

Thomas Woodruff is a former SVA professor who was the head of both the illustration and cartooning programs for years. His abuse and derogatory treatment of students is well documented and extensive. He's been nominated for four Eisner awards this year, despite his outward disdain for comics and excessive efforts to push students away from the art form.
Tumblr media
Some wonderful people have started a petition to remove Woodruff and his book from the Eisner ballot, and you can sign it here.
The following is just taste of Woodruff's terrible impact on SVA students over the years, all posted online before his Eisner noms were announced...
"Had a habit of casual racist comments about East Asian students."
Tumblr media
"Enjoys making students cry, enjoys inflicting harm on students verbally."
Tumblr media
"Woodruff is so narcissistic, racist, belittling, and down right vulgar."
Tumblr media
"Head of the illustration major was Thomas Woodruff, who is the most racist."
Tumblr media
"He doesn't even bother to hide his disdain for the comics medium, he has no knowledge of it or its history."

hey so do you like SVA??? i was just accepted for BFA comics/cartooning and i’d love to hear ur opinion b4 i officially commit!
I think this is late! But hi! I'm also BFA Cartooning/Comics so this is perfect! SVA Is an amazing school program wise, they have dozens of courses and options for you to take that are amazing and very helpful, my fvaourites have been Storytelling an dInking this year! Of course there are cons to lots of schools, cons here are Science & Humanity classes are a REQUIREMENT every year and that some of the professors REALLY suck, but there's also AMAZING teacher who quickly beocome your friend! Living wise is complicated, if you're commuting then this doesn't apply, but building wise is iffy too. 23rd is an older building and has a lot of things that dont work/are slow, but their pros are a full sized kitchen, a table and a common living space, as well as a big hang out space and it's closer to classes. 24th i have not had any problems with except for wifi issues and the fact there is no full sized kitchen in dorms. BUT Major pros and little cons to both living situations All in all, I love this school, I personally think it's been money well spent so far, i've learned so much about the art world, how it works both as a freelance artist and in big corporations (how to get jobs with disney, marvel, dc, sony and other studios!) They have incredible internships available, depending on teacher you can work on a lot of real-world expiernce to! I'd say it's worth it but to of course look well into any other options you have especially since SVA is NOT a cheap school to attend (i am in severe debt /hj) also like a lot of the professors here are like lowkey famous and im always in awe whenever i recognise a name on my professor list it's insane

CINEMA 4D - SVA
Old.
Chuckling at the fact that my workaholic mushroom is the opener art for the SVA CE Cinema 4D course. This course was my first intro to 3D just a few years ago, but this project was done much later, mostly for ZBrush practice + rendering in C4D.

You can major in comics??? You mean like illustration, right?
Nah, I mean comics. As in cartooning. It's a separate major at my school.
It's like the illustration program, and in fact the two kinda overlap in alot of ways. Like the first year, illustration and cartooning majors share a "foundation year" as freshmen so you're all learning the same basics. And alot of comics classes are open to illustration majors and vice versa.
But the comics program has a stronger emphasis on visual storytelling and comics as a medium, and there's more direct information about the graphic novel/comics industry and how being a freelancer works in the past vs the present.

Okay so like pretty much every art school SVA has a lot of pros and cons, it’s just a matter of what you want in a school. Personally I like SVA in spite of all of its issues, which there are a lot of.
There’s some mean professors, but that’s not something that’s exclusive to SVA. Likewise there’s also been a lot of really great professors that I’ve learned a lot from.
A big pro of SVA for me was the location. It’s in NYC, so there’s a lot to do. If you’re a theatre kid, broadway is like right around the corner. You will have to do a lot of walking though, which is good or bad depending on the person.
A con is that they don’t have a meal plan and one of the dorms only has a kitchen in the basement. But again it’s New York, it’s pretty easy to find food.
SVA has a really great cartooning department, so I’d definitely recommend it if you’re looking to go into cartooning. It’s going to be a lot of work, but it will be worth it. If you’re unsure about it, just do what I did and write down a pros and cons list and see if the cons are something that you’d be able to put up with for the pros. Hope this helps!

Know your life path.
One day while in an advertising class at the School of Visual Arts, my instructor told us about an ad for Barneys Mens Clothing. It was about little boys discussing their career goals. I believe we all have them. I know what mine was. I'm living it now. I wrote this quote just before graduating High School. "Art is the affirmination of life". _Prelli
