i think in the hamster wheel of my mind a big part of where people go wrong with eddie and his shitty garage band as an extension is that they for some bizarre reason think he's gene simmons metal when he's jack black metal. heavy metal. he's tenacious d metal. he's school of rock. he's stoner lord of the rings metal he nearly wore blue jeans and plaid. jack black literally in real life once said eddie was the best character bc he's heavy metal like him. LOOK AT THIS
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
#🍦#answer it's bc people think he's some mishmash of all alternative scenes without any actual knowledge of where the mashing occurs 😭#eddie is . a heavy metal guy. A cool one. a nice one even. he likes rock and roll#it's so funny when ppl try and describe it and they've never heard the stuff he actually listens to in their lives for some reason#literally so much of the appeal of eddie's character within his subculture is that its theatrical and dramatic but its still grounded#he's very alternative and Out There but he's still just some guy. he's not wearing spiked leather jackets#in fact he's not wearing any of the other kinds of leather jackets i've seen people say he would ... TO ME#sts#if u haven't seen the clip he then proceeds to air guitar the MoP melody then shouts heavy metal is everywhere#i don't even know how to explain this bc it's like ... okay#the general .. VIBE? aestheticsm? is kind of similar to what people sometimes portray but they're missing thst it's tongue in cheek#like it's like that buff poster of him being this anachronistic homage to heavy metal album covers#fire and satanic imagery and skulls and lightning and big drama and ROCK AND ROLL#it's rock and ROLL man...#and people r making him this weird sanitised dork LOL 😭 when he's a dork in a different more fun way.. imo#and it's not that those types of people don't exist and that they're not cool in their own way cuz they are sure but that's not THIS GUY#he is an 80S METALHEAD... and yeah i try and ground him in thinfs and poke and prod at it until it fits my own understanding of alternative#scenes better but that's bc i've had a hand in the punk scene for years and years#i dunno sometimes i feel like ppl r just not doing the full potential and then going way too hard in this super specific direction#and he ends up first of all usually just a massive douchebag not sure what that's about. But a guy who he would in canon HATE 😭#YOU ARE MAKING HIM A POSER. is what i'm saying#he is alwyas some guy before he's anything else and before he's that he's a 20 year old loser#you need to reflect this... You need to bottle it. ugh. ugh#so much of this reminds me of the time someone was like he would never wear PLAID#like are you kidding me. are you actually kidding me rn#ppl have this weird arstheticised mostly modern and mostly literallt just eboy Idea of what he'd wear it's crazy to me sorry#also it's ugly#i also think. this is so long lol . anyway . i also think going too ''authentic'' in the 80s metalhead direction also lands u w different#problems. my advice to people trying to write or draw alternative characters is they are People. before they are anything else#🍏

Genuine question, what movies are you talking about in that post? Bc I can't think of any that fit that description but I'm also not a big movie person so I may just have been lucky with the ones I've seen dkjsfa
disclaimer! don’t @ me saying to watch better movies! i do! i just watch a LOT of movies! i like to see what’s going out there since i study media*
also i know this is badly written. i have not pulled myself together after a very long year and a half
this got rambly so i’m putting my tl;dr here: comedy feels stagnant to me, and that makes me feel weird when it comes to things (some of which are aimed at kids/teens)
okay so if you don’t watch a lot of movies you probably missed them! the kind of movies i was thinking about are mostly comedies that are aimed at teens but really just don’t feel right. just stupid forgettable movies that will have a random adult (maybe a teacher) make some comment about back in their day. and they just feel off in a very specific way where it’s like idk who is writing this but i don’t think they have a grasp of what is going on
probably due to being rich
i am terrible with titles and names and i’m currently in the wilderness so i’m not too confident matching scenes to titles
(also that post was slamming together a few themes i’ve seen repeated in different movies and shows and they are not all american. some are canadian/uk/australia but i use the ‘too movies’ or ‘too much (blank) on tv’ thing as a joke)
also some of the movies/shows are marketed to adults not teens. they also carry with some of those themes. um. working moms (show) is canadian and i’m not sure if they’re millennial or gen x but they have a lot of weird recurring issues with ‘ooh scary generation gap with my kids.’
and i think um. i’m trying to remember the name. idk it stars the australian woman who was in pitch perfect and she’s in a coma and wakes up 20 years later and goes back to school and they make the slur jokes. that is the one i watched most recently. i was having a hard time with trying to figure out who the target audience was… can’t remember the name and i watched it last week
another movie i can’t remember the name of that i think was marketed at teens also had the weird ‘oh the climate change protest kids just want attention’ gimmick that the movie with the pitch perfect woman had
is sarah jessica parker gen x? her new sec and the city show is Wild. one of the groups presentations in my media discourse class was about the representation of sexual minorities between the old sex and the city and the new sex and the city. i can try to find one of the articles they referenced in that because how the new one is almost more isolating is really interesting
which is kind of a trend? a ohh boo hoo don’t yell at me mean minorities!! i’m trying!! kind of vibe that runs through a lot of new movies/shows
like there is this distinct weirdness that is coming in with media created by white female comedians (i say female bc i tend to watch movies with female leads) amy palmer or pohler or whatever her name is. she has a movie out like 5 years ago? it had this teenage girl finding her mom’s old punk albums or something
but basically i had been watching a bunch of comedy things with female leads and so many are just weird. like it was leaving me wondering like what are the shows/movies teens are getting that feel somewhat authentic?
obviously movies are weird and there aren’t a lot of good ones that really stand out. and there have been constant jokes about how young people are portrayed in media for forever probably
but i think that movies are a good medium for comfort and hope, maybe especially for children and teens. you don’t have to have the energy to read to yourself. you can watch it when you’re doing something else with your hands. or are sick.
it’s the visuals. and the music. the way you can do something else while getting a story. they are very human.
and comedies are much harder to do than dramas. but they have a different sort of catharsis. i don’t know. people tend to downplay them as just stupid when there is a deep connection humans try to have through humour. i’m rambling but i just really love comedies and i love stories for children and stories for teens and i think they’re all downplayed as. being stupid. or easy. like you don’t have to try.
i’m sorry this just turned into rambling. maybe writers just went too far with the ‘set things in high school bc a.) kids will make emotional decisions that you wouldn’t see an adult character make b.) your characters are trapped in that environment c.) unlike college, they are trapped with other characters on mostly the same schedule and d.) they still see breakups etc as life and death situations’ advice that they give writers (this is paraphrased from several screenwriting guides i’ve read)
but idk i’m just bothered by the comedies i’ve been watching. and comedies do tend to show a lot about the current state of the world. comedies and horror are both downplayed genres that show a lot.
again sorry this is rambly. i don’t have energy to find my sources. there are interesting theories on comedy out there that just make me feel weird about what i’m seeing. like it’s so stagnant. that’s my tl;dr
most comedies i’ve seen lately seem stagnant
*i have a degree in this so i feel bad that i’m not pulling sources bc it feels like plagiarism at points

baccano for the ask game? or if you've answered one like this before hmm lof?
ohh I'll do both, thanks!
baccano (light novel version! the anime's fun but it doesn't get the depth of the characters)
Favorite character: so many but I'll say for this one chane and jacuzzi splot my beloveds
Second favorite character: special shoutout to ennis, nile, rail, carla, nice, luchino, and graham, phil
Least favorite character: with the sheer volume, there are so many unlikeable or boring characters or characters who are just villainized in a really poorly-written and overdone way...I'm going to say raz smith because he's annoying and pretentious even though I actually do get the appeal
The character I’m most like: uhh carol. everyone in this show is off the rails bonkers I'm just along for the ride. also ennis! god I love ennis
Favorite pairing: despite him only writing straight relationships and having a strong need to pair up almost all of the women with men, I actually love a lot of narita's couples. claire and chane, jacuzzi and nice, keith and kate, and huey and monica all stand out to me. they're all so fun but all for different reasons :)
Least favorite pairing: on the flipside, when he messes up it's...bad...one of my most hated pairings ever is in the books. bobby and carnea (turns to retch). all of the other couples, even if I have issues with them for one reason or another (ladd and lua, firo and ennis), don't inspire the amount of loathing I have towards this couple. you shame your great-grandparents, boy
Favorite moment: like tgcf, this series is long and rich and I could name many scenes in every book. for now I'm going to say the finale of the grand punk railroad with jacuzzi standing up to face the rail tracer is fucking phenomenal (in both show and novel) and it blows me away every time.
Rating out of 10: 9/10. there's a lot of juvenile writing choices that I was less able to pick up on when I was younger, one of the books is incredibly racist, a lot of the plots boild down to "and then everyone meets up and fights and there's a lot of chaos" and some of the villains are written in such a shallow and over-the-top way it's painful. but to me the story and characters (and their interactions) are just mesmerizing, the structure keeps things fresh and interesting, the fantastical concepts introduced and followed through on are unlike any I've seen before, and the fight scenes are magnificent. I do think the good outweighs the bad, but I haven't read them in years so take this with a grain of salt
EDIT: I FORGOT LOF kahdsahdksaf
legend of fei
Favorite character: zhou fei herself is a delight even if strangely underdeveloped
Second favorite character: her little cousin!! Ii yan (had to google her name but I adore her)
Least favorite character: yin pei. FUCKING yin pei. why did he have so many arcs why couldn't he have just died nobody wanted him around and he contributed nothing that made bearing his presence worth it. also li zheng he was so annoying and he never seemed to grow into the role I think he was supposed to
The character I’m most like: hard to say. chuchu maybe except if I lost my younger brother I would literally have torn that town apart. love her though it's not her fault the writers dropped the ball
Favorite pairing: xy and zf are cute! tere are definitely issues I had with them early on and stuff I disliked later but overall I really enjoyed their relationship
Least favorite pairing: LI ZHENG LEAVE CHUCHU ALONE. goodddd that's the WORST she literally likes zf better...zf has two hands!!
Favorite moment: oh that battle scene in 25 fucking spectacular. the one where xy releases the bonds on himself and then spends like the next 20 episodes dying bc of it
Rating out of 10: hmmm 6/10. it was fun and full of sexy old people and the main characters had a great dynamic and the side characters were pretty fun and the figh scenes were awesome but the plot was kind of a mess and the camerawork was dreadful and the finale was just a tad underwhelming and there didn't seem to be any deeper messages or themes within the work. but it was fun! I'm glad I saw it
thank you!!
