The more Narita tweets about sharks and shark-related movies, and the more sharks appear in his work in any shape or form, the more I suspect that the shark otaku Sayo Shinoyama in his manga Dead Mount Death Play is a self-insert.

Sharks/shark references in Narita’s works, off the top of my head:

Vamp!: There’s a little encyclopedia entry in Vamp! IV dedicated to George “The Deep Deep Deep Blue,” a megalodon vampire swimming the seas somewhere. ...A megalodon, if you don’t know, is an ancient, extinct species of shark. (I guess scientists haven’t discovered George yet, haha...)

He also has three thresher shark familiars.

Baccano!: Obvious one is the animatronic shark in the 2002 arc, in association with John Drox’s Shark Flight movie. Also, the real live shark that eats a certain someone at the end of the arc.

Wait a second...what if... what if that shark was actually George? ...Holy shit. Guys I have a new headcanon

Durarara!!: I admit this is a stretch, but the Blue Squares’ name derives from Yatsufusa comparing them to sharks protecting their [blue squares] of territory. Also, don’t the Blue Squares wear hats with shark teeth patterns in book 8 or something?

DMDP: Besides Sayo, as mentioned earlier, there’s...oh, I don’t know, how about the fact that the real Polka is possessing a stuffed shark toy? (Relevant Narita tweet.)

There might be shark references in Hariyama-San, Center of the World and Wednesdays Smiling with Otsuberu, for all I know..to say nothing of his non-original IP works. I can’t remember if there was anything in Stealth Symphony, it’s been too long.

I don’t know if his sharkmania has a stopping point... I just know that he, for one, has already welcomed his new shark overlords and we could be next.
