Covenant by RobotSquid (Marvel ; Thor/Loki)
One of three binds I did in 2023 along with What Kacchan Wants by heartsinhay and an updated author's copy of Heartworms by geckocest. As I mentioned in my last post, 2023 saw me losing some of my passion for this hobby. WKW helped bring that passion back, as did this project.
I've been a Thorki fan for a long time. Like, a really long time. I've read a lot of fics over the years and Covenant is easily in my top 5. Re-reading it while working on this bind was a treat.
Usually, when I bind a book, I plan out the typeset first and then search for suitable bookcloth, cover papers, endpapers, etc. This time, I saw the Gold & Blue Kikkou papers and created the design around that. The design just screamed "Jotun royalty" to me.
This was also my first time using ribbon charms. I originally looked for one that would give a similar vibe to the hair brooch Thor gifted Loki in the story (one of my favorite scenes). Unfortunately, I couldn't find anything similar, so I opted for this aesthetic key instead.
I somehow forgot to take a pic of the endpapers, but they're these gorgeous gold Chiyogami papers from ChibiJayShop.

万両[Manryō] Ardisia crenata
It grows in the woods. It is often planted in gardens because its grass is not very tall, about one meter, the shapes of the leaves and berries are lovely, and the overall shape is easy to maintain. On the other hand, it is fertile and will sprout from here and there if left unchecked.
The name means ten thousand ryō, one of the old units of currency. The kanji 万[Man] is also read as ban or yorozu. For example, 万国[Bankoku](All countries,) 万歳[Banzai](Cheers,) 万屋[Yorozuya](General store,) 八百万[Yaoyorozu](Myriad; countless) and so on. 万 is a rewritten kanji of 萬 and is a transformation of 卍[Manji](万字, the letter 万; Swastika.) 萬 is a character representing the figure of a scorpion. The traditional pattern 紗綾形[Sayagata] is also called 卍崩し[Manji kuzushi] or 卍繋[Manji tsunagi]. 崩し means disassenbling, 繋 means connecting or linking. https://www.google.com/search?q=紗綾形&tbm=isch
In passing, 八百 is usually read as happyaku and means eight hundred, and is also read as yao and means large number in addition to that. 八百屋[Yaoya](vegetable store,) 八百長[Yaochō](Put-up job) and so on.

@dayrisen said (inbox):
[ kingdom au ! ] ❛❛ You are excused. ❜❜ The servants that had accompanied her bow, heads lowered as bodies shift back, scuttling aside at her sole demand before they turn & empty the room, leaving two behind ; him & her. Palms carry themselves quietly, one arm heavy laid with a wrap, long tresses nearly touching tile as she approaches him, warmth laying within her features. She reaches upward, palm threading to gently touch his cheek ----- It seems so quick, the pace of the world since Seti has went onto the next, leaving his son with shoulders of Atlas. No longer, no longer, neither of them stand here as children anymore. For a moment, she remains silent, simply staring into the golden rays before fingers shift, tenderly taking the wrap 'pon her arm & shifting it outward, threading it 'pon his shoulders. Sayagata ----- the treasured pattern, may his reign be blessed. As she stands, 'pon the edges of feet, adjusting the wrap, hands shift to gently tug him close, against her shoulder. ❛❛ It fits you well. I'm glad I decided to make it. ❜❜ Voice soft, barely above a whisper, she remains there for but a moment, placing within the embrace all affection & care, fingers thrum through umber earth. Soon, she departs, gaze lifting 'pon the new ruler. Palm shifts outward, offering for him to rest his hand atop her own. ❛❛ If you have a moment, care to join me for tea in the garden ? I think it would be best for you to try & relax for just a moment if it's possible. ❜❜ A quiet & wordless ; ' I am here. '

OZYMANDIAS HAD BEEN PREPPED since the moment he was born for the role of a ruler, and yet, when that day finally came to pass, he felt…at a loss. His mother often assisted him, granting what wisdom she had when he needed it, but at the end of the day, she too would not be there forever. Kingdoms rose and fell based on the choices of whoever sat upon the throne, and thus, whenever he pondered that train of thought, his unease only grew. What if he was the one who brought everything to ruin? What if he walked a path that only made his people come to curse his name for all his failings? That was a though that came to him whenever he was able to sit quietly out of sight of others, and though he knew his father would tell him to lift his head and walk forward rather than mulling over a future that has not come to pass…that sometimes, was easier said than done. Thus, when an invitation from Koto came from him to visit her homeland, despite how rare it was for kings of his nation to ever take their leave of this great land of burning sands and vast mountains, he did not hesitate to accept.
     It would be a reprieve.
Lifting his hand, he allowed fingers to brush against the Sayagata he had been given, the pattern just as beautiful as everything else he had seen since coming to this land. ❝You did not have to make such a thing for me.❞ He said this, but he knew Koto far too well. After all, they had known one another since they were children. If Koto wanted to do something, she would do it. Such was simply her nature. ❝Although, ❞ he continued, lips curling just slightly at the ends – only slight, ❝I suppose there is little point in telling someone as stubborn as you that.❞ Soon pulled into her arms, he was taken aback for a moment, but it did not take him long to just as gently return that embrace. Ah, he didn’t realize how much he had missed Koto. Being a king was lonely. When she pulled away and offered her hand, he took it. ❝…I would not turn down tea. Thank you, Koto.❞

Can you tell more about the underlying weave (?) pattern that some kimono have? Like the one Fukumiyo is wearing as minarai. I noticed it on many kimono already and it is only visible on good quality photos and disappeares in the distance. I imagine the customers can get lost in staring at the neverending pattern when sitting next to her. Maybe thats why its used :D
That weave is called Rinzu (綸子) and it is indeed meant to be appreciated up close. It's a technique that become popular during the Taisho Period (1912-1926) when kimono production and wealth were at their peak. It's a way to add an extra layer of extravagance to an already extravagant garment. Fukumiyo's pattern is specifically called Sayagata (紗綾形) with chrysanthemums ^^

FFXIVWRITE 2022 - Prompt #1: Cross
Adventurers of all sorts ended up in Idyllshire back then. Warriors of combat and craft collected, bargaining with the goblins for ever more resources and information. Biff often found himself there after the close of the Dragonsong War. It was the place to meet new people, back then. Somehow, it had become the place he’d meet his best friend as well. Don’t tell Star that, though.
It had been a bright, sunny day. He remembered the light catching on the details of a sword’s scabbard. Oh, it was a beauty. Beyond that, he sensed the power of the sword within, unsure what it meant. Most swords did not leave him with the impression that they had lived a life–at least, not so blatantly, with an aura so serene yet persistent as that. It housed a story, he thought. Perhaps it housed many. It rode on the hip of a man dressed like a lordly Hingan, clad in a kariginu of deep azure with gold accents. Sayagata patterns shone where the sun’s rays touched the blue cloth. The man’s dark hair complemented his attire, giving the impression that he had somehow been born a work of art.
And yet, Biff had only seen the man’s back! Struck by awe, he’d almost lost his chance to address the stranger who had crossed his path, for the man had walked several paces away by then. Perhaps it was curiosity, perhaps it was whimsy, perhaps it was the sheer need to seize a chance before it slipped away. Biff could not put his finger on which it was, but he followed the sword bearer, determined to speak.
“‘Scuse me, sir!” he called out, jogging to catch up. “I couldn’t help but notice that there sword on yer hip.” The man stopped and, mid-turn, Biff carried on with doubled enthusiasm. “Where’d ye get it from!? Did ye have it made!?”

Lovely spring colors for this outfit, pairing a thistle patterned obi, with a charming black butterflies over pink ground kimono.
The rinzu (figured satin) depicts the shikunshi (lit. "four gentlemen", plum blossom, chrysanthemum, orchid, and bamboo) over sayagata (interlocking manji), a popular combination for women's garments.

What Kacchan Wants by heartsinhay (My Hero Academia ; Bakugou Katsuki/Midoriya Izuku)
I didn't do much bookbinding in 2023, partly due to Everything Happening So Much, and partly because I had lost some of my enthusiasm for the hobby. But working on binding What Kacchan Wants by heartsinhay played a crucial role in reigniting my passion.
Typesetting this was a blast. heartsinhay helped me choose between two designs I was stuck on and the result is A+. The piggybank design is perfect for the comedic sugar daddy plot.
This was my first time titling a spine, too, and it only took 5 tries and a physical fight with my Cricut to make it happen. Now I'm a bit more comfortable using my Cricut for non-papercraft projects. I hope I can create more elaborate designs with it in the future.
What Kacchan Wants is easily become one of my favorite BNHA fics, and I feel fortunate to have had the opportunity to gift a copy to the author. This won't be the last fic I bind from them, either. I already have Number One Nemesis on my 2024 list. ✦
