Just thought I would share this piece I created a while back for the Green Lion man himself! Thanks @greenlionsawframe for trusting me to recreate your logo, and for making the most beautiful saw frames 💚 For those who have been asking for more info about my sawframe, here goes.. I use a Green Lion piercing saw to cut all of my work by hand. I find the Green Lion sawframe to be by far the most comfortable saw to use (and believe me, I've tried them all!), the unique shape of the frame allows for greater reach. The handle is slightly thicker than most and is shaped to the hand, making it easier to hold onto with a looser grip, which in turn puts less stress on the wrist. After years of wrist issues, switching to the Green Lion sawframe was an absolute game changer for me. The larger surface area of the thumbscrews makes changing blades a breeze, which is very important when it comes to making jewellery with so many cut outs. I love these sawframes so much, I asked Green Lion if I could become a distributor! They are now available for shipping worldwide in the Tools section of my website www.jeanburgers.com . #greenlion #sawframe #tourmaline #handcut #handcrafted #metalwork #jewelry #melbourne https://www.instagram.com/p/Ci-7M5hhGkI/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

i’m. i’m kinda tired of seeing the Art Posts online be centered around digital artists. like yeah most artists nowadays are digital artists but like. where are the posts for the traditional painters? the ceramicists, the jewelers, the fiber artists, the printmakers? mixed media, performance artists, graffiti artists, fashion designers, sculptors, mural painters, charcoal artists?
like i’ll go read a post about being an artist and it’s like “you’re always going to have slip ups and mess ups as an artist” and then talks about super specific things that only digital artists can relate to. like my mentor messes up and she’s been a master jeweler for 30 years. and that’s so refreshing to see as a young jeweler who’s always been told to just keep practicing and working and putting in more hours and you won’t mess up anymore and everything’ll be easy!
all the hashtag Art Tips you see online are for how to pirate digital art software instead of where/how to get cheaper materials or find better replacements for them. or they’re for drawing. which like yeah, drawing is pretty fundamental for any art form but a whole huge group of artists don’t need to know the best brush setting to draw this feature. we need to know what other people are doing/using to make 3D molds, or what knitting needles are the best, or which printmaking process is the best for a certain level of detail.
it’s just very tiring being a 3D/physical artist in a world where digital art and design is the dominant. we don’t have nearly as many accessible free resources, and most people’s materials/tools are expensive and we can’t pirate them because they’re physical and idk maybe i’m in the wrong circles but i haven’t seen any dupes for the best jewelers sawframe anywhere or anyone posting about where/how to get gemstones for cheap. all of my knowledge comes from people irl. and i’m sure other non digital artists are in online communities for their respective art forms whcih are great and dandy but i bet those are small and inactive or cliquey or not very helpful (i could be wrong here)
it’s not even resource posts either! encouragement, portfolio tips, inspirational stories, everything. everyone. is a digital artist. and yeah like you’re gonna see posts about digital art on a digital platform but sometimes i just wish that digital artists remembered that there are other art forms out there. and to maybe make their general (encouragement/inspirational) posts a little bit more applicable to other fields

Sawing: one of the main skills used to bring jewelry to life from sterling sheet. ⚒ Of all the technique questions I see in my DMs, most of them are about sawing. I don’t always stick to my own advice, but I’m happy to share tips because I remember how frustrating it was to learn this skill. My number one thing I always tell those learning to saw: do not force your blade forward! Saw up and down with the *slightest* forward force and let the teeth of the saw do the majority of the work. Excessive pushing will cause your blade to snap and makes it much harder to control your precision. The second best tip I ever received - don’t tilt your saw frame too far forward! It’s easy to do this accidentally, and the best way to tell if you fall victim to this bad habit (we all do to some degree!) is by filming yourself or having someone watch you from the side. Your blade should be as perpendicular as possible to the piece of metal you’re working on. Tilting forward, like pushing too hard, also causes blades to snap and reduces the precision of your sawing. Whenever I notice my blade won’t go exactly where I want it to, I check my tilt and readjust if I need to. There’s tons more tips for smooth sawing, fellow smiths feel free to leave your favorites in the comments! Above all: practice makes perfect. 💎 If you’ve enjoyed this post and would like to see more like it, please let me know in the comments! I am considering sharing tips and tricks more often if there’s interest. // And with that, I’m off to work my fingers to the bone for Sunday’s shop update (12pm est). Wishing you all a happy hump day! 👩🏻‍🏭 {Sawframe from @greenlionsawframe. 🖤} . . . #soliloquyjewelry #sawing #handsaw #metalsmith #silversmith #riojeweler #jewelrydesign #jewelrydesigner #jewelrymaker #jewelrymaking #turquoisejewelry #handmade #supporthandmade #processvideo #madeinboston #artiststudio (at Boston, Massachusetts)

How to Build a Basket Stand
New Post has been published on https://craftsguideto.com/awesome/how-to-build-a-basket-stand/
How to Build a Basket Stand
Tumblr media
Overview
You’ve seen chests of drawers–well, here’s a “chest of baskets.” This basket stand can be used in nearly any room–in the bathroom for storing towels, the entryway for organizing hats and gloves, the bedroom for workout clothes, even in the kitchen for veggies or hand towels.
The total materials bill for our pine stand, including the baskets, was about $ 50. We bought baskets at a craft store, but lots of other retailers like Pier 1, West Elm and IKEA also carry them. Make sure to buy your baskets first; you need to construct the stand based on their dimensions.
To keep the frame of the basket stand both lightweight and strong, we employed cookie joinery. It’s a clever route to join wood, and a technique you can use with many other projects. See below for cookie joiner tips.
How to build a basket stand
Tumblr media
Photo 1: Mark the legs
Clamp the legs together and mark them all at the same time. That route, all your marks will line up and you’ll avoid mismatches.
Tumblr media
Layout detail
Careful layout stimulates the next steps easier.
Tumblr media
Photo 2: Cut the cookie slots
Cut slots in the ends of the rungs and sides of the legs. Assemble each ladder in a “dry run” to make sure they fit together correctly.
Tumblr media
Photo 3: Assemble the basket stand “ladders”
Join the rungs to the legs with glue and cookies, then fasten the ladders together. Work fast! You have to assemble eight joints before the glue begins to set.
Tumblr media
Photo 4: Connect the ladders
Install the front and back crosspieces with glue and nails. Then add the runners that support the baskets.
Tumblr media
Photo 5: Top it off
Glue and nail the plywood top to the top of the stand, then apply cove molding to neaten up and conceal the edges.
You’ll build the two “ladders” that form the sides of the basket stand, then glue and nail the crosspieces to join the two ladders.
To get started, cut all the proportions to duration( assure Cutting List ). Mark the echo and crosspiece locations on the legs. Mark all four legs at the same time to ensure the framework is uniform and square( Photo 1 ).
As you mark the legs, keep picturing how your baskets will sit on the runners, especially if you’re use baskets smaller or larger than ours; it will help you avoid mental errors. Use the biscuit joiner to cut slots in the edges of the legs and aims of the resounds( Photo 2 ). You’ll need to clip the biscuits to suit the 1-1/ 2-in. -wide legs and echoes( watch “Biscuit Tips, ” below ).
Apply glue to the biscuits and slots( Photo 3) and assemble each joint. Clamp the ladders together and define them aside until the glue dries.
Join the two ladders by gluing and nailing the crosspieces between them. Remember that the three front crosspieces that will support the baskets lie flat. Next, install the basket athletes( Photo 4) even with the flat crosspieces that run across the front. Glue and nail the 3/4 -in. plywood top to the basket stand, then apply cove molding to cover the edges( Photo 5 ).
Biscuit tip-off
Tumblr media
Clip biscuits for narrow stock
The smallest common cookies( No. 0) are almost 1-7 /8 in. long. That’s too long for the 1-1/ 2-in. wide parts on this basket stand. But there’s an easy solution: Just clip about 1/4 in. off both ends of each cookie. Your slots will still be too long and visible at inside corners, but a little filler and finish will conceal them.
Tumblr media
Number the joints
While you’re marking the center lines of each biscuit slot, also number each joint. That will eliminate confusion and misalignments during assembly.
Tumblr media
Make a glue injector
Spreading a neat, even bead of glue inside a biscuit slot ain’t easy. You can buy special injectors online, or stimulate your own.
Tumblr media
Homemade injector top
To make your own injector, modify the cap from a marker with a fine-tooth saw.
Tumblr media
Always do a dry run
Biscuits grab fast. During glue-up, you don’t have time to correct mistakes or dig up a longer decide of fastens. So always test the whole assembly–including clamps–before you get out the glue. For complicated assemblies, give yourself more working day by use slow-setting wood glue. Titebond Extend is one brand.
A biscuit joiner is a superb tool for joining wood where it would be difficult to use nails or fucks. The joint is strong, invisible and easy to create. The compressed timber cookies expand on contact with moisture in the glue. Since the biscuits are placed in slots that are wider than the cookie, you can adjust the joint a little after butting the two pieces together. Biscuits come in three common sizes: No. 0, No. 10 and No. 20.

A biscuit joiner will help you stimulate strong, fast and accurate joints. Spike Carlsen, an expert at Family Handyman, will show you how to use a cookie joiner to get perfect joints.
