Their goal was to hunt after marine mammals during the great final period of glaciation. Through natural selection, the palest bears with the most fat would have had the highest chance of survival. They mainly eat seals; polar bears have such a remarkable sense of smell that they can detect a seal swimming in the water – below a metre of compacted snow – up to a kilometre away. Climate change is the single greatest threat to polar bears as they are uniquely adapted to live on sea ice, and that ice is disappearing. As sea ice declines, the Arctic is opening up to oil and gas exploration and increased shipping which may affect the delicate balance of the Arctic ecosystem. Hungry and curious polar bears may stray into villages, leading to conflict between people defending themselves and their families. The ongoing coronavirus pandemic has really shown us what happens when we think of a potentially global crisis as some other country’s problem. And even when it does arrive on our shores, there are many who believe it will not affect them personally because they don’t fall within the "vulnerable" category. While some world leaders are busy pointing fingers or denying their responsibility in starting or exacerbating the crisis, the scientists and experts are really the ones we should be listening to. Authors of a recent study are warning that in order to avoid loss of #seaice, we need to “aggressively” reduce greenhouse gas rise. Without action, the study describes the explicit costs to #polarbears. Polar bears need sea ice to catch seals, therefore the continued rise in #globalwarming and reduction in sea ice is expected to lead to the bears’ decline, across their range. Published in Nature Climate Change, the study reviewed data on polar bear food sources and space needs between 1979 and 2016. It concluded that high levels of #greenhousegases in the atmosphere will lead to “steeply declining reproduction and survival”, with only small numbers of bears remaining by 2100. #Animalagriculture emits 14.5% of human-induced greenhouse gas emissions, more than the transportation sector, and is responsible for 44% of methane emissions. Need something to cool off this summer? Well... the Earth does too... Global Warming is no more an Urban Legend taught to fifth graders during their E.V.Ed. lectures. Infact, it never was. Water scarcity is at a new high and continues to grow, Crop-Harvest temperatures are becoming more difficult to achieve, deaths due to heat-strokes are skyrocketing, travel is getting more difficult since the existing air-travel altitudes are becoming more susceptible to turbulence, and most importantly, the WHITE ice around the world is melting and subsequently exposing the BLACK rocks. BLACK absorbs and radiates the most heat. Thus, this very fact is creating a kind of a chain reaction in the cycle of global warming. The Glaciers will soon stop feeding our rivers, Skiing Holidays would become an incredible dream and what not. The melting of the Polar Ice Caps has begun in a manner symbolic of the sands of time. The more the caps are exposed, the lesser the time we have. . As the melt down happens, the first species of beings to be affected are the Huge and Chubby Polar Bears, who can only survive in ice-cold temperatures. They face an immediate risk, which itself lies at the root of the whole Global Warming problem. If our actions can somehow prevent the Ice Caps from melting, subsequently saving these helpless beings, we can infact prevent Global Warming altogether.
