it'd be so fucking funny to ask owner about his pronouns honestly. he starts to go on a tangent about identity and why people seek it and stuff
sasaki: so... owner... i was just wondering.... what are your pronouns?
owner: my pronouns?
sasaki: yeah...
owner: pronouns are linked to the identity somehow, yes? it's hard for a being like myself to have one. humans always search for identity... why, i wonder? to give them an anchor in this world, proof that they exist? or perhaps to explore new things within the self? i don't see the point, honestly. a human's lifespan is so fleeting. they spend all their lives looking for a sense of "self" when they'll die soon enough. like wandering aimlessly through the fog...
sasaki:
owner: but, you may use any for me. refer to me as whatever you like.
sasaki: y-yeah... thanks... (what was that all about?!)

Ohhhhhhhhohohohohohohohoho!!!!!!
It's all coming together now!!!!
Time for a long over due rant and some theories. Volume 10 was juicy 🧃🧃🧃
Spoilers below! I'm SERIOUS do not read if you aren't caught up to volume 10. I don't want to ruin anything for you!
This madness got loooooooooooong 😭
Tumblr media
First and foremost the time line is fucked. Good luck getting everything in order but hey, I've tried here.
Let's break it down to the basics. The way I see it, we have 3 main characters.
𖢺 Our resident skeleton boi ~ Sasaki
ຊ Our resident snake boi ~ Rei, who I will refer to as Rei (present day Slayer); and Adult Rei (past adult life)
℘ Owner 🖤
For today we are gonna focus on Sasaki and Owner with a dash of Rei
⊱⋅─────────────────────⋅⊰
From what I can tell, there have been 4 versions of Sasaki (that we know of)
𖢺 Oldest version: Singing Bone ~ we know this is the oldest version since Owner tells us that this is the first time they met.
𖢺 Super Old Sasaki: from volumes 7 & 9 ~ this version is the Sasaki with Adult Rei who reveals himself as a skeletal monster. Adult Rei blows him on the spot you KNOW what panel I'm talking about!
𖢺 Adult Sasaki: from volume 8 ~ this is the incarnation who was arrested for political writings and whose will-o-the-whisp moved on. He even stated himself that it was in his previous life that he was a novelist (obviously he is aware of his own reincarnations (at some point in each life))
𖢺 Then there is Sasaki ~ our present day kiddo.
Tumblr media
What we know so far about Sasaki & Rei:
~ Sasaki & Rei have been reincarnated multiple times (tho so far we've only seen 2 reincarnations of Rei)
~ They have a history as far as their lives shown in volumes 7 & 9 (possibly more)
𖢺 Sasaki our sweet walking bag of bones does die (tho it's not clear how long each of his lives are) and then is reborn. Presumably due to Owner burying him each time.
ຊ Rei comes from a cursed family line that there are so many curses now that they must continue the family line in order to prevent the curses/malice from taking over.
ຊ In order to become an "adult" and gain control of the malice the males in the family have to eat their fathers.
What we know about Owner:
℘ They are a "trueborn monster" per the mermaid huntsman in volume 6
℘ They have no true form as mentioned by Owner multiple times thru out the series and most recently reiterated in volume 10: "long ago I was merely darkness" and that they had no face or body.
℘ But now they can manipulate their form/body (tho there is nothing under the skin) yet they can't age. We see this in volume 5 where the fox spirit stole Owner's adult body after a bet and Owner never appears as an adult.
℘ They are immortal (it seems) based off of Owner's own words in volume 7 that they "have all the time in the world"
Tumblr media
Now the reoccuring theme of Saskai's existence is revolved around "people feeling complete by filling the void that is him". (Which I find interesting since Owner has no true form... little bit more on this at the end)
Super Old Sasaki was a student wanting to become a writer and was working on a manuscript so he frequented the Inn to focus on his writing.
Now in volume 10, when Owner employs Sasaki he starts by having him clean his old room (which has to be 100s of years old by now) I THINK Owner was hoping to maybe jog his memory and get some sort of reaction from him.
Also in volume 10, Owner tells Sasaki that he went looking for SO Sasaki/Adult Sasaki and that "No matter what form he takes I will always be there to greet him. After all, I want to keep playing together."
Tumblr media
In a previous post I mentioned that I believe that Owner thought of Rei in a parental way and that I was unsure his thoughts on Sasaki.
My feeling now is more that Owner is in love with Sasaki's soul. Hence why they reject anyone who confesses their love to them. But they keep coming back to Sasaki during each of his lives.
Owner is also very cautious about all the Sasakis. They always come to his aid, so much so that present day Sasaki states that he's not worried about being cursed because he knows that Owner will help him.
For Rei, I'm still getting parental vibes from Owner. I also think that the only reason Owner stepped in to assist (or whatever he is doing) with Rei's family is ultimately for Sasaki. It seems that they are connected and perhaps Owner is trying to set up the breaking of the curse to free Sasaki's entanglement with it so that they can be together.
If we wanna get weird, would Owner take over Sasaki's body?? They would truly be together then- Sasaki would be "filled" and Owner would have a true body.
All in all, I absolutely love this series. The artwork BLOWS MY MIND EVERYTIME!!!! I wish we could see it animated 😩 and I'm excited to see where Matsuri takes it.
TELL US OWNER'S SECRETS!!!! 🖤

In Volume 11, Owner was
Freaking terrifying! Like I mean look at this!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I don't think we've every seen him get quite so physically violent with any of his other attendants.
There was a moment with Spider where he grabbed his chin, but he didn't choke him and grind his head down into the floor!
This volume was frustrating because it feels like we're on the verge of understanding everything, but we don't have enough to put it together.
Even Sasaki...obviously he's Owner's husband...but then we have that ending scene.
Half the volume is Owner clearly wanting permanent companionship...then we have thos scene.

Terrifying thought: What if Yoshitaka is going to be Rei's "Sasaki" figure? What I mean is, Rei Sr. and Sasaki were close. Then, Rei betrayed Sasaki, and while we don't know exactly the effects that had on the situation I imagine something about it is going to be important to Sasaki's current life. Now, Rei Jr. does know Sasaki, and while he mostly seems to stick with him to find Owner, Rei doesn't seem completely callous or indifferent toward Sasaki. Yet, they're not close or really friends.
Yoshitaka and Rei Jr. were clearly close friends. I'm not sure if they were more, although I think Yoshitaka had deeper feelings for Rei. If there's a parallel for Rei in this cycle of whatever situation all of the characters are in, Yoshitaka would more closely aligned to Sasaki's role because of his deeper connection with Rei. Added to this is that Owner has taken an interest in him, and that's never a good sign.

Theory based on the summary for Vol. 8 and what we found out from Vols. 6 and 7:
Owner mentioned to Kaibara that he tried to make family once but it didn't work. The summary says that stories can bring people back to life, and we know that Sasaki is in some kind of loop with the Saejima family. So maybe Owner created Sasaki. Whether due to Owner's involvement or some other influence, Sasaki had the power to make history repeat itself through writing...maybe having people reincarnated in the process (like maybe Saejima's family tradition is really passing on the father's soul to the son?)
Owner tried to use this to keep certain people around as his "family," but it doesn't quite work the way he'd hoped. They don't remember him, and they end up suffering over and over again, leading to them hating him.
This could explain things that seem like continuity errors. For example, Spider's death is portrayed differently in Vol 1 than in Vol 3, and Butterfly is seen crying out in distress during his formation in one chapter, whereas in the one that gives us more detail, he seems curious but not particularly upset. If these aren't the author changing their mind as they go along, this theory could explain it. We were shown separate cycles with variations.
Now for some spoilery things taken from the PDFs on NewType that are of issues not released in the US. It's still conjecture because I can't read Japanese, but more solid than other evidence:
In the most recent NewType PDF, Sasaki, Yoshitaka, and Spider's ward and her boyfriend (blanking on their names now) join forces. Something's wrong with Boyfriend Doe, and Sasaki and Ward Doe take him to Yoshitaka. In one panel, it looks like Yoshitaka takes a folded piece of paper out of Sasaki.
That kind of sounds like myths about Golems. Maybe that paper is what allows Sasaki to live forever or reincarnate.

Oh my gosh! Oh my gosh! Oh my gosh!
I finished Volume 7 of Phantom Tales of the Night, and
There's so much to unpack! I doubt this will be the only post I make, but damn that was a good volume.
First of all, Rei Jr., you are an asshole who doesn't deserve Yoshitaka! Let Kaibara go! Enough with the dehumanizing collar! Also, I'm fairly sure Rei spiked Kaibara with either poison or some truth serum thing. In the chapter with Yoshitaka, I wanted Rei to call Yoshitaka back, but now I'd rather he stay away from my poor sweet goth cinnamon roll.
Sasaki's connection with the Saejimas was unexpected. It seems to me that Rei Sr. is probably the reason Sasaki doesn't remember anything. It's kind of a shame because Owner and Sasaki seem to be on so much better terms in the past. However, even then Owner mentions watching Sasaki suffer "again" and Sasaki is nonplussed. I wonder how long this cycle has been going on.
Oh my gosh, Butterfly! We knew he had capacity for destruction, but that was...oh, wow. I still feel bad for him hearing that voice slut shaming him. I feel like that will be his downfall. He can't control what gets in him, so he'll be forced to do something he can't live with. I don't think the Cherry Tree's right about him just using women. I think he does care about them. But he does make them dissolve, and he doesn't stop, so maybe she has a point.
I did think it was cute how Spider reminded him of the comb, then invited him to the kitchen. Oddly, I feel like Butterfly's story is supposed to happen at the same time as Spider's. Spider asks Butterfly if he failed, and when Butterfly doesn't know what he's talking about. Spider looks sad for him. I think Butterfly's been looking for the Owner of the comb, and that was what he was doing when he took the trash out. He found her, but didn't realize it.
However, there is some time discrepancy. When Spider pulls down his bandages in Butterfly's story, the skin around his mouth isn't decayed. In the story where Spider first meets Kyouko officially, it clearly is. I don't know if this was intentional or a continuity error. Also, in the first chapter with Sasaki, taking place no later than 1912, Spider is much less decomposed than in the chapter where he comes to the inn to meet Butterfly. This could be due to Owner's magic, or maybe Spider's worked at the inn on and off.
I'm really not happy with the implications of Kyouko and Spider together. I hope Matsuri doesn't go that route. Kyouko's a child still, as Spider himself pointed out! Kyouko seems into him, but Spider...I'm not sure. He does seem to be more guiding her and pushing her to live a normal life. And a grocery store isn't really a choice spot for a date. But the implication is there, and it's deeply uncomfortable. Like, there's no reason he couldn't have been paired with Kyouko's mom if romance was necessary. At least she's not a minor.
I'm not entirely surprised Yoshitaka is in love with Rei. Until I read the last chapter, I would have shipped it. Now, though, Rei needs to be kept away from human beings.
I do feel bad for Inamura. He's a creepy stalker, but his fate still seems very cruel.
I do love how every single character seems to recognize Yoshitaka's cinnamon roll status.
