Never Were the Way She Was Colin Stetson and Sarah Neufeld 2015, Constellation (Bandcamp)

My prevailing memory of seeing Sarah Neufeld and Colin Stetson’s duo performance in a small room at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa was the way they spent much of the performance with their eyes locked on one another. When violinist Neufeld became lost in her own playing and arched backward, in the same motion Stetson would lean forward over his hulking, steampunk bass saxophone, his legs braced wide. It was as though the two of them were bound at the neck by a long, invisible leather strap. In the most intense passages, they would square off barely a foot apart, like two rams, the veins in Stetson’s sweaty neck and forehead standing out, Neufeld’s angled forearm a blur of precision cuts. Despite also seeing Stetson’s SORROW, an arrangement of Gorecki’s 3rd Symphony for a 12-piece band, during the same festival, it was the intimate physicality of the duo show with Neufeld that had the bigger impact on me.

While Stetson has frequently performed in larger combos (as has Neufeld with Arcade Fire, for that matter), in solo and duo performances his uniqueness as a player is more legible. On Never Were the Way She Was, he uses his uncanny circular breathing technique to create ogrish drones (“With the Dark Hug of Time”), loop-like melodic phrases (“The Sun Roars Into View”), and even to emulate broken techno beats (“The Rest of Us”). Stetson is a pretty physically jacked guy, and when you see him do this stuff in person it’s a bit like watching a blacksmith going at his forge—on record it can be easy for an inattentive listener to miss the exertions required to produce these sounds. But when you start tuning in to the fact all of this groaning cacophony is produced by one man’s laboured lungs, its rawness and minor imprecisions become captivating.

Neufeld takes centre stage on the more somber, post-rocky tunes like the title track, her violin weeping rust as she overlooks a grey bay, Stetson contributing various fog horns and stomach upset. Now and again she wordlessly sings, but it’s always recorded distantly, like a memory of some ever-present sorrow you refuse to allow to surface. On “In the Vespers,” she sketches out a tricky rhythm that Stetson eventually echoes on a tenor sax, the pair running through an odd-time workout that would sound like prog were in not for the chilly clarity of her phrasing, the way the energy decays once again into remorse.

The pair’s previous collaboration was a 2013 film score (Blue Caprice), and the record is of a piece with the influential work Stetson has subsequently done as a soundtrack composer (notably Ari Aster’s Hereditary). As with fellow Aster collaborator the Haxan Cloak, Stetson’s work has helped to define the sound of contemporary unease. If you’ve watched a recent horror movie or psychological thriller, the palette of Never Were the Way She Was will already be familiar—but here the pieces aren’t tied to any preconceived scenario, and the interplay between the two musicians gives it a dynamism and complete-in-itself mood all its own.

the great @arthousebrat has created a lovely horror-themed music game and then tagged me in it! this was quite a tough one! still, to make things more difficult i decided to try and keep some semblance of genre coherence... i don't know if i succeeded though ahahah. anyway, tysm for the tag <3

RULES: pick five or more songs that would be in your ideal horror movie soundtrack. any songs except actual horror movie soundtracks. you don’t have to explain your choices but I’d love to hear it!

Skinny Puppy - Killing Game i really wanted to have one outlier - a song that doesn't really match the rest of the score. there were SO many possible picks for this spot, honestly... but i knew i needed something industrial/metal & this specific skuppy has the perfect song structure to make a dope opening track!

Colin Stetson and Sarah Neufeld - The Sun Roars into View TSRiV is definitely the spotlight of my score, serving as a background to the most important yet cryptic scene! it's akin to Stetson's Among the Sef, one of the first songs that came to mind (but couldn't choose since it's already part of a horror soundtrack). also... MORE! BRASS! IN! HORROR!

Nurse with Wound - Darkness Fish i'd use this song to set the mood for one of the many body horror/gore moments in the film. Easy Snapping and Livin' Fear of James Last from the same album could also work... i guess we would have to remove/rework the spoken parts to stay in line with the plot of the film, though

Uboa - The Sky May Be (Enthropy) THE perfect choice for a chasing/escape scene! while TSMB (Extus) and Thigh High Cat Tights are the scarier and bleaker tracks out of the whole TSMB project, TSMB (Entropy) would make a better soundtrack entry imo

Puce Mary - The Spiral you just watched the most fucked up horror film of your life, the credits roll and you are left staring at the screen wondering what just happened... all while this is playing <3

Alexei Navalny, aged 47 years, a fierce anti-corruption campaigner who galvanised Russia’s political opposition, collapsed after a walk at his prison on Friday after which, prison services said, he lost consciousness and couldn’t be revived.

Biden said he was both “not surprised and outraged at the news”, adding Navalny had bravely fought the regime during Russia’s slow descent into authoritarianism under Putin.

“Even in prison, he was a powerful voice for the truth,” Biden said. “Make no mistake: Putin is responsible for Navalny’s death. What has happened to Alexei Navalny is more proof of Putin’s brutality.”

In an unplanned appearance at the Munich Security Conference, Alexei Navalny’s wife Yulia Navalnaya said that Putin would “bear responsibility” for what he had done.

Assassination attempts against foes of Russian President Vladimir Putin have been common during his nearly quarter century in power.

The attacks range from the exotic — poisoned by drinking polonium-laced tea or touching a deadly nerve agent — to the more mundane of getting shot at close range. Some take a fatal plunge from an open window.

Over the years, Kremlin political critics, turncoat spies and investigative journalists have been killed or assaulted in a variety of ways.

Arcade Fire is a Canadian indie rock band, consisting of husband and wife Win Butler and Régine Chassagne, alongside Richard Reed Parry, Tim Kingsbury and Jeremy Gara. The band's current touring line-up also includes former core member Sarah Neufeld and multi-instrumentalists Paul Beaubrun, Dan Boeckner and Eric Heigle. Each of the band's studio albums features contributions from composer and violinist Owen Pallett.

Founded in 2001 by friends and classmates Butler and Josh Deu, the band came to prominence in 2004 with the release of their critically acclaimed debut album Funeral.
