"You know this guy right? This goblin?" "Cousin just so you know, we don't refer to folks by race. (...) This wonderful assistant!" "...So we just refer to them by their jobs???"

watched the first episode of desiquest tonight. the pure delight of watching an entirely south asian cast, in a south asian inspired world, telling a story of people that i can see so clearly in my mind's eye, it's incredible. truly the joy of representation. all the casual references, the incorporation of language, even the conversation style.
all of the characters hit immediately. ashwathama, as diaspora coming back to the homeland, with an anglicized nickname, technically competent but so bumbling anyway. every interaction murkha has is hilarious, especially with baccha. laddoo auntie has this lived-in quality, this fully formed sense of her life and how she's lived it. also everything rekha says is comedy gold. and sitara. the moment she disappeared into the teakettle? i audibly gasped. she has such good character hooks, and her interactions with laddoo auntie? perfection.
anyway i'm deeply enjoying this both as a fan of actual plays and just as a desi really feeling the joy of seeing an all-desi cast.

one of my favorite things about actual plays is getting attached to the “little guys” of the campaign and desiquest has two great ones.
chhotu: the giant fluffy squirrel familiar that looks like he jumped out of a lisa frank book
and
baccha: the red panda autonomaton child with projectors in his eyes and a public auntie and uncle tier list, who cries oil when you bonk him on the head even if it didn’t hurt him
they are the greatest little guys and they’ve consumed my brain

I recently watched the first ep of Desi Quest and guys. You simply have to watch it.
Jasmine Bhullar. She's such an incredible DM. I discovered her through Coffin Run and I really love her style! I particularly love her adorable NPCs (BATCHA!!!!!) and her love of props (remember those vials of blood from coffin run??). So excited to see more of the world she's built!
Rekha Shankar. top two favourite dropout cast members. she is truly one of the funniest, most witty people i've ever been aware of. her character, Ladoo Auntie, is SO FUNNY. i had forgotten how much i adored her perfect comedic timing
Sandeep Parikh. i don't know him almost at all (i remember him being pretty funny on dirty laundry) but it's my understanding that him and his production company are behind the show to i am thankfull. also, his character, ash, is very cute! i really appreciate his commitment to the bit of not knowing the right words and calling everybody a rubbish bin
Omar Najam. OMG!! I discovered him on Acofaf and like. ace rep of all time. remember in the AP when Omar praised him for making an ace character (Andhera) important in a setting where fucking is so paramount (regency) and he just responded with "thanks! it's. my life" yeah me too. big cardigan energy and his character has it too
Anjali Bhimani. again, i don't know her as much as some of the other people, but i love her vibe and her character already seems to be carrying some mystery in her backstory!!!
Anyway the show looks great, i can't wait to see the rest! And i also hope this inspires people to make actual play shows/create custom dnd worlds rooted in their culture, because as somebody who knows little to nothing about desi culture, it's really cool to see it through this fantastical lens. and i personally think a french canadian dnd actual play show would go crazy

"Desi (/ˈdāsē/) noun: a word used to describe the people, cultures, and products of the Indian subcontinent and their diaspora, derived from Sanskrit देश (deśá), meaning "land, country".
"DesiQuest (/ˈdāsē kwest/) noun: an epic, culturally authentic Dungeons & Dragons actual-play show with an all Desi cast, game mastered by Jasmine Bhullar, that’ll Fire Bolt your brain and Thunderclap your heart.
"It's incredibly rare out here in the US, to create a production that has all Desi cast. We're usually competing with each other for the one guest spot on shows with a similar format. So, whether you are Desi yourself or not, whether you're an experienced player or new to D&D, if you want to see more highly skilled and highly engaging BROWN faces on screen, weaving epic tales inspired by mythology and lore from the Indian sub-continent, then we need YOUR support to make it happen." ~ Kickstarter Description

"It was also important to Jasmine [Bhullar] that DesiQuest felt like a safe place to learn new things, that even folks who know nothing about Indian culture felt welcome to watch, enjoy, and learn. DesiQuest is, after all, also an invitation for non-Desi people to experience part of the deep richness and vast beauty of Desi culture.
"'I think that so much of the way we educate now, especially through social media, is shame,' Jasmine said, citing discussions around 'chai tea' as an example. The word 'chai' means 'tea,' so sometimes people mock folks for saying the equivalent of 'tea tea.' 'I think my players are super brave because they were willing to ask the same questions the audience would have had, instead of pretending while googling on their phone nervously like, "Yeah, I know what a dupatta is,"' Jasmine said.
"'I love that my players are like, "What is that?" and having that moment to be vulnerable and admit you don't know everything, because I think as a society we can benefit from that.'" ("Community Spotlight: DesiQuest, A Show Celebrating and Sharing Desi Joy" by Alyssa Visscher for DnD Beyond)
