watched the first episode of desiquest tonight. the pure delight of watching an entirely south asian cast, in a south asian inspired world, telling a story of people that i can see so clearly in my mind's eye, it's incredible. truly the joy of representation. all the casual references, the incorporation of language, even the conversation style.
all of the characters hit immediately. ashwathama, as diaspora coming back to the homeland, with an anglicized nickname, technically competent but so bumbling anyway. every interaction murkha has is hilarious, especially with baccha. laddoo auntie has this lived-in quality, this fully formed sense of her life and how she's lived it. also everything rekha says is comedy gold. and sitara. the moment she disappeared into the teakettle? i audibly gasped. she has such good character hooks, and her interactions with laddoo auntie? perfection.
anyway i'm deeply enjoying this both as a fan of actual plays and just as a desi really feeling the joy of seeing an all-desi cast.

I can't imagine what Arjuna was feeling when Krishna suggested that they trick Drona into believing that Ashwathama had been killed in battle. Arjuna went through (and must still be feeling) such deep grief when Abhimanyu was killed, not to mention the pain of losing Iravan earlier in the war too, and now he's being asked to inflict the same pain on somebody important to him, on his teacher, as a ruse? The idea itself must hurt, both from Arjuna's perspective as Drona's dear student and as somebody who is also a father who has lost his sons.

Thinking of smoll master who likes small enclosed spaces as they feel safe and secure there, they don't like open spaces they're less safe and less places to hide wondering how various servants like Cu or Ashvattaman or Mori would react to this
Aahhww...
Cu notices your fear before you tell him. How you stay closer things that offer you shelter or your stiff posture when have to walk across large open spaces.
He would, when notices you getting antsy, hold you in his hands and gently nuzzle your body against face. Create safe haven for just for you in that moment.
You tell him about it one night, when he as per usual, hangs around you room. Gold eyes peer down at you. Small legs dangling over the egde of your bed.
For all his rage, he is gentle when he picks you up and lays you on his warm chest as he rests himself against the pillows of your bed. The man chuckles as you nuzzle your face against the skin, finding comfort in his warmth.
"I will keep you safe yeah?"
Would permanently walk around his second ascension armor. Allowing you (and sometimes putting you) to find refuge on his neck, the large collar acting as shield as you settle against his neck.
It is safe, the scent of him just overwhelms your senses and your anxiety just washes away. And Mori enjoys your presence immensely, it is soothes his own fear that you might dissappear right in front of his eyes.

since i didn't post about it last night i will this morning.
second episode of desiquest was genuinely so fun. the intro with luis. laddoo auntie at the party. sitara and namir talking. something anjali and luis share is a focus that really locks in during personal conversations in game. ash and namir. everything murkha did this episode. the teakettle conversation. priya's lore dump and collection.
the kitty party was an interesting way to launch the party off into adventure--good character interactions and different perspectives on them, an introduction to cuisine, outfit changes, and a fun way to establish who these characters are and what drives them beyond their initial introduction.

Ashwatthama, son of Guru Dronacharya, is a cursed character according to the Mahabharata. In the last part of the Mahabharata, Vasudeva Krishna struck Ashwatthama with the Sudarshan Chakra on his forehead and cursed him for his worst deeds.
According to that curse Ashwatthama will never die, his whole body will be white, bruised, full of decay and he will suffer this till the end of creation.
Kalki will show the story exactly 6000 years after Mahabharata. Where Amitabh Bachchan will be seen as Ashwatthama.
Why Ashwatthama is still going around in secret, what is his purpose will be seen in this film.

What do you think are durjodhon and dushashon's daak naams? (Karna and Ashwathama's as well, please!)
durjodhon and dushashon are dury (bhai) and dushy (bhai) all credits to my bondhu shizen
dury bhai says and i quote, "curse you ppl with already short names that cannot be further shortened for nicknames but im stubborn so ill give u a daak naam" so Karna is kboi (which is impractical cause krshna is also kboi but dury bhai knows what he's doing he loves confusion and the shenanigans that follow wink wink)
dury bhai alos calls karna sweet summer child, local rainbow dealer and human embodiment of sunshine when he's feeling particularly dramatic
They all probably call Ashwatthama bhai Ashu (Achhuuu lmao) much to his disapproval becuase "amar naam ta na amar maa baba rekhechhe ota ke butcher korona plus amar naam ta emon kichhu o boro noye" cue sarcastic coughing in the background
#also while we are on daak naams gandhari seems like the kind of mum who calls her sons khoka boro khoka mejo khoka so on#ashwathama uses everyone's puro naam and expects everyone to do the same for him
