Genji Tsuushin Agedama was created in 1990 as a multi-pronged media property spanning a manga series, an anime TV show, and a video game. It was conceptualized by two writers who would later become fairly well known in the gaming sphere – Akira Sakuma (Momotaro Densetsu) and Oji Hiroi (Tengai Makyou, Sakura Wars). At the core of it is a young boy named Agedama Genji, a young boy and an alien from the Hero Planet. As for the game, rather being a standard platformer, it’s part of the unusual “running side-scrolling” subgenre, where the screen scrolls automatically, similar to titles Data East’s Atomic Runner Chelnov and Sega/Westone’s Wonder Boy III: Monster Lair.

Phoenix: Well, that came as a surprise. So you said you’ve “graduated”, huh?
Larry: Yeah! I’m so happy I graduated from my vocational school's “Patissier Training 2nd Year Course”!
Edgeworth: Rather, what’s more surprising is that he’s decided to study abroad just after graduating.
Larry: Heh. My girl was sayin’ the same thing! “Larry, a pastry chef in Paris? I’d think going under some training would be better.”
Phoenix: ...She might have been hinting at breaking up, though...
Larry: So I decided: I’ll be living in Paris and train up at the “Creme du Mamiretta” HQ! *
Maya: *sigh*... Larry, you’d really do anything.
Larry: You’re right I would! For now, I’ll have to say goodbye to our customary flower-watching meetup with you all every year...
Maya: Aww, it’s gonna be lonely here. If you’re “living” there, we won’t meet up for a while.
Edgeworth: If he really does, he might not return at all.
Phoenix: Thanks for everything up to now, Larry.
Larry: .........Huh. Maybe I should just give up on it.
Phoenix: Hey, don’t start feeling homesick before you’ve even gone.
Larry: Ah! By the way, this is something totally unrelated.
Edgeworth: What is it?
Larry: Did you know? I heard the sakura tree has a dead body buried underneath it.
Phoenix: Talk about a complete mood swing...
Maya: Well, we do get that turn of phrase often. **
Larry: Hey, let’s try diggin’ it up! The dirt is piled up here... poking out of the ground.
Phoenix: H-hey! I don’t think you should do that...
Larry: AAAAAAAAH!?
Maya: W-what? Is there really a body?
Larry: No... This is... a toy “treasure box”.
Maya: Oooh! Larry, open it! Open it!
Larry: Hmmm? A mysterious letter has appeared from inside.
Maya: Gimme! Gimme! Let’s see... I’ll read it.
“Yo! Me from a year later, how are you? I’m dead.
Congrats on graduating your patissier training course! - Larry Butz”
Phoenix: .......
Edgeworth: .......
Larry: What the heck!? Hey, I’m supposed to be dead!?
Phoenix: .......
Edgeworth: Larry... do you really not remember writing this?
Larry: Huh?
Phoenix: That’s a time capsule, you know.
Larry: Time capsule...?
Edgeworth: It’s a box where you store letters to yourself and other memorabilia, then pack up and bury somewhere.
Larry: Never heard of it before.
Phoenix: No, no, no! During last year’s flower-watching, you were crying out, “I’ll do it! I’ll do it!” and making a big fuss. You wrote that letter yourself and buried it yourself.
Larry: Eh? So is that what happened?
Maya: Last year, I had to go back home to Kurain, so I didn’t know.
Larry: ...But ya know...
Edgeworth: What now?
Larry: So what’s this about? How I wrote the “I’m dead” thing.
Phoenix: Last year around this time, you were feeling really down. You were saying, “No matter what I do, I can’t make the cream bubble.”
Edgeworth: In a way, you could say something was dead.
Larry: ...About that...
Edgeworth: What?
Larry: So how did last-year me know that I’d graduate? From the “Patissier Training 2nd Year Course”, even!
Phoenix: Maybe... it’s because you just finished the first year of a 2-year course last year?
Larry: Ugh... What was up with me last year? Nearly scared me to death... Like I was ready to kill! Whoa...
Edgeworth: If you ask me, what’s scarier is how easily you’ve forgotten it all.
Maya: Oh, oh! Since it’s been a whlie, let’s keep going!
Phoenix: Huh? “Keep going” with what?
Maya: The “time capsule”, of course! Let’s write messages to ourselves next year!
Larry: Whoo! That’s a great idea, Maya!
Edgeworth: He never learns...
Phoenix: Who knows if he’ll ever “kill” his old self...?
Larry: Haha! When that time comes, that’s when it comes!
Maya: If that ever happens, maybe there really will be a body buried down here!
Larry: Okay! So with that settled, what should we write this time?
Phoenix: Hmm, next year is going to be 2021...
Maya: Oh, I know! We can celebrate the 20th anniversary of the release of “Gyakuten Saiban”! ...Don’t you agree?
Phoenix: Ah, yeah. There is that.
Larry: ...But ya know...
Edgeworth: What!?
Larry: What if we just forget to dig it back up next year? That’d be a real shame... I know I’ll forget about it.
Maya: Oh, right...
Phoenix: There’s nothing wrong with that.
Maya: Huh?
Phoenix: Like last time, we didn’t know if we would. The you from last year didn’t know you would plan to go to Paris the next year, right?
Larry: Oh, yeah... I really wouldn’t have known.
Edgeworth: Though the sakura bloom every year, they are completely different flowers. Encounters or departures, when they will arrive... We would not ever know. We won’t even know if we’ll meet up here again next year.
Phoenix: But what matters is now. We’re all here, writing whatever silly things, and it’s already become a “memory”... That’s the truth.
Larry: ...Thinking about it, for next year’s memories... I don’t have a clue.
Maya: Well, we’re just here and digging up things without a thought, so don’t worry and go ahead!
Edgeworth: Rather than next year, he might not ever return here again.
Phoenix: Thanks for everything up to now, Larry.
Larry: ........Ya know.
Edgeworth: What?
Larry: If you guys are actually trying to tell me, “Don’t go!” Maybe I should reconsider too?
Phoenix: ...You’re such a pain.
Larry: Alright, then! I won’t go after all!
Edgeworth: What...?
Larry: Now that I think about it, there’s a branch of “Creme du Mamiretta” by the train station.
Phoenix, Edgeworth: Enough already! Just go!!
Maya: And let’s all meet up again sometime!

Probablement l’une des série les plus populaire de Sega au Japon, et également la plus méconnue dans le reste du monde. SAKURA TAISEN propose un mélange de tactical RPG et un univers steampunk original qui n’a rien a envier aux meilleurs jeux du genre. Lorsque le magazine Famitsu Japon demande a ses lecteurs quelle franchise de jeu vidéo ils espèrent le plus retrouver dans une suite, la réponse est sans appel : Final Fantasy VII... suivi de Sakura Taisen !
Cette saga extraordinaire comprend 5 épisodes (qu’il serait de bon ton de dépoussiérer graphiquement) ainsi que de nombreux spin offs. Selon moi, la compilation SAKURA TAISEN ANTHOLOGY parfaite contient l’intégralité de ces derniers, les 5 épisodes originaux + remasters, les spin offs, ainsi que les petits jeux imode (pour mobile) jamais distribués chez nous. En Europe et aux USA, seuls l’épisode 5 a fait un passage par la case traduction (en anglais), tout le reste est intégralement en japonais et le restera probablement pour toujours...
