[Ita👇️ ]ILLUSTRATED HOLIDAY DIARY⁠ How easy is it to panic in a situation where we feel we don't have everything under control? ⁠ During these sailing holidays, I realised that panic serves absolutely no purpose. On the contrary: it can only make things worse. But now I will tell you what happened.... ⁠ ⁠ It was just after midday, and after a wonderful sail of several hours, we were getting ready to enter the bay we had chosen to spend the afternoon and night in. Before returning the sails, we had to light the engine. And it does not start. We try again. It gives no sign of life. ⁠ Or rather: the screen had lit up, but the power button did not start the engine. Oh God, now what?!?⁠ We looked at each other with worried eyes, and that's the moment when it would have been easy to panic and act casually. ⁠ But no. A deep breath. We analysed the situation: are we in mortal danger? No. Do we risk serious harm? No. ⁠ Then one by one we did all the tests to find out where the problem was coming from. ⁠ Eventually we managed to start the engine (the problem was really a trifle) and entered the deserted bay, which then accommodated us for the night. ⁠ ⁠ So the next time you feel panic coming on, stop and breathe. Analyse the seriousness of the situation and one step at a time try to solve it. [Acqua dolce e salata]

Arriva la notte e la pioggia. L’orizzonte è pieno di lampi e fulmini, intorno buio come inchiostro, ci alterniamo ai turni di guardia con gli altri membri dell’equipaggio. Nonostante le cerate, il cappuccio e i guanti fa molto freddo e non ci sono posti per ripararsi in coperta.

Ho le scarpe bagnate e penso agli stivali da barca che ho lasciato a casa, sarebbero stati troppo ingombranti per il mio zaino ma in questo momento mi avrebbero fatto molto comodo...sento i piedi che stanno lessando tra acqua dolce e salata. Comincio ad accusare il mare ed inizia a subentrare una leggera apatia, ma cerco di tenermi attivo timonando.

Anche dormire la notte nella mia cuccetta a prua non è semplice. Devo faticare per trovare una stabilità decente e cercare di prendere sonno, che però è interrotto continuamente dalle botte sulle onde e dai rumori delle vele, delle scotte, del vento e del mare che sotto coperta si amplificano. Ma devo cercare di riposare perché i turni sono ogni 4 ore circa. Appena mi alzo sento subito il mare nella pancia, nei riflessi e nella lucidità…spero che nei prossimi giorni le nuvole lasceranno il posto alle stelle.
