Hugs required. Lots of them. It took us years to finally create a fleet of buddy boats that suited us all. Liveaboatd families that were willing to change plans to stick together. This can be rare as we all value our independence and autonomy. Yet there we were island-hopping with this amazing group. 🇧🇸 • Like the Covid-free kid fleet we created last summer in Maine, our Bahamas crew was made up of people from all walks of life. Kids ranging in age from 18 months to 16 years. We had bonfires and potlucks, spear fishing trips and sundowners, birthday parties and movie nights. And, of course, Shabbat. It was marvelous and none of us wanted it to end. • But Mother Nature and boat problems conspired against us and we were forced to say goodbye. While our buddy boats are now headed south and north for the fast approaching hurricane season, the Dawn Treader and her crew had to make an unexpected crossing back to Florida. 😭😭😭 • The crossing was rough. I even got sick, which never happens. But that was nothing compared with the heartsick feeling that we all have from saying goodbye, not knowing if we will see these friends again. Even if we do, the odds of recreating this special Bahamas kid boat fleet is slim. Some things are more joyful to pull out of the water than other things. The sea urchin shell was cool. Our starboard propeller... not so much. • On our trip from Abaco's Little Harbour to an anchorage near Cornish Cay we did something we never do, left the dinghy down and dragged it behind us (like so many cruisers do). But the painter (rope that pulls the dinghy) got tangled in our propeller. After killing the engines, Ahava dove to untangle it, but the damage had already been done. When six women and I sailed from Jacksonville to West Palm to George Town, without a lot of sightseeing stops along the way people asked, "Why?" "Why the rush?" "Why the route (bypassing the Berrys, Nassau, Eleuthera and most of the Exumas)? • Well, THIS is why! All of the teen boats are here! Plus, great younger kid boats for Samuel. And, because of the Bahamas' strict Covid protocols, everyone is Covid free, allowing the kids to see real faces again! • Today s/v Dawn Treader's teens (Ahava, 16 & Ziva, 14) organized a beach cleanup on Stocking Island. It was a huge success. Not only did they help the environment but they had a lot of fun, too.
