Wtf happened at the kennel?! As someone who works at one i cant imagine
Princess was boarding during a hot summer and they left her outside in the sun, no water or shade, for three days. They didn't even know she'd been dead for days when my parents went to pick her up, so I doubt they were feeding her either. A big dark sable GSD doesn't last long in the heat like that.
My parents tried to sue and it went more or less no where. Princess' corpse was so rotted and cooked by the sun that there was no way to prove anything more than wrongful treatment of a corpse, the argument was that she could have died naturally and thus it wasn't neglect. It was very traumatic for my parents, Princess was my dad's first pet ever and their first pet they got together as a couple.
So we don't board our dogs anymore. Ever. I don't care how many good reviews the kennel has. This kennel had good reviews too.

Basic dog color genetics
Okay, so I really love dog color genetics and wanted to make a post explaining them because there’s so much cool stuff going on.
Most of my info will be coming from the DogGenetics website, along with the Facebook group Dog Coat Color Genetics, and the UCDavis website.
I’ll be assuming a basic understanding of Mendelian genetics, if you don’t know about Punnett squares there are tons of great resources around the internet, and the DogGenetics site has a great beginner article.
I will not be using breed-specific terms, just generic ones. There are simply too many breed terms to define and explain. Also, they are confusing, since GSD people call agouti "sable".
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Above left: Loki, @lokivonkrusenbusch eurasier Loki. He is Agouti.
Above right: Maki, my mixed-breed dog, is a shaded sable.
These are the basics, I’ll be making a new post for each locus later on!
Before we get to the actual colors: Dogs have two pigments, Eumelanin and Phaeomelanin. While each can be modified to different shades, the default for eumelanin is black and phaeomelanin is red. I’ll call them Black and Red pigment for ease of reading, but be aware they can be modified. White is a lack of pigment.
A Locus is a gene location, which has several alleles that have different outcomes. Basic genes have two but some have many more. Loci is the plural of Locus.
Dog coat colors work in layers, so I’ll go from the top down.
C locus: (not named): albinism and color point. This locus affects the color expression and whether the entire dog is white or color point.
S locus (S/s/others): white spotting. This goes on top of everything else. Determines how much white is on the dog.
T locus (T, Tr, t): ticking and roan. This determines whether white areas will have ticking.
E locus (E/Em/Eg/Eh/Ea/e): masking/grizzle/recessive red. This layer determines whether or not the black pigment shows, and if so, where.
K locus (KB/Kbr/Ky): black/brindle/patterned. This layer also determines where black pigment shows up, after the E locus. Brindle dogs will be striped on the Red pigmented areas, as determined by the A locus. Seal is involved here somewhere. It makes the black pigment on a dominant black less opaque so that the A locus will show through.
A locus (ASIPdy, ASIPsy, ASIPag, ASIPbs, ASIPbb1, ASIPbb2, ASIPbb3, ASIPa): sable, agouti, tan point, saddle tan, and recessive black. This determines which areas of the dog will have black hair and whether the hairs will change which pigment they produce over time.
The following Locii modify existing layers:
I series: (I, i, potentially more): intensity. This gene controls the richness of the red color exposed by the E locus.
D locus (D/d): blue/grey. This layer changes the black to grey.
B locus (B/b): brown/liver.  This layer changes the black to liver, different shades depending on the specific allele. Cocoa is another allele that does basically the same thing. A dog can be both grey and liver, also known as Lilac.
G locus (G,g): progressive grey. This gene causes some breeds to slowly fade the Black pigment to grey.
M Locus (M, Mh, Mc,m and more): merle. This determines if the dog has merle fur and how strong it is.
H locus (H,h): harlequin. This is a modifier of merle that only exists in Great Danes, it turns merle into black patches.
These genes all come together to "build" the color of the dog. They can be as simple as a black lab or as complex as a sighthound with grizzle, lilac, progressive greying, and brindle. These can combine in surprising ways to make all sorts of interesting colors.

Hiya, how are you doing?
I admit I’m more a cat person. But I love German Shepherds and have gotten along well with the ones I’ve met.
What are your thoughts on German Shepherds?
Please and thank you.
ahhh, hi! I'm doing well, though I'm still kicking a cold atm 😅 And ah omg, I love GSDs. I haven't met many in real life and I'm pretty allergic to them so it's probably a good thing, unfortunately 😭 Though in my dreams I'd love a sable one, they're just so beautiful.
I think GSDs are absolutely amazing dogs and their breed in general is awesome. They have a great drive and ability to be obedient.
The strong opinion I have about GSDs is about the demographic of owners. While I don't have specific statistics and evidence on hand, I find through personal experience and by making inferences from bite/abandonment statistics, that a lot of owners are negligent or uneducated when it comes to the breed. And by a lot, I don't mean all, I just mean a larger amount than there should be or than is common. I expect there to be negligent dog owners, it's part of life unfortunately, but I do notice the rate of it seems to be higher in GSDs and here's why I think that is.
GSDs have some of the highest bite and attack records in the USA. Don't get me wrong, GSDs are truly amazing but they take a lot of work. They need a lot of enrichment and exercise because they are a working breed. It's not that the dog is violent or aggressive, but rather the owner's aren't prepared to train their dog. Inexperienced or undedicated owners can adopt GSDs without understanding just how busy of a breed it is and how much work and dedication they will need. All dogs need training and taming, but the reality is, is that a GSD is larger, had a strong drive, and has more opportunities to harm than a smaller dog does. (Side note: I still firmly beleive small dogs should not get away with behavioural issues just because they're small) Because of this, if one doesn't properly train their GSD, they can do a lot of damage in an attack. While a GSD can attack because of territorial reasons, food aggression, or other 'provoked' reasons. They can also get antsy and anxious if they aren't given enough enrichment and stimulation. This can lead to destructive behaviours and bites even in a friendly dog.
Other than their bite record, one of the reasons I believe a lot of people who get GSDs are uneducated or underprepared is because of how common GSDs are in shelters and how often they are abandoned. Despite their popularity, there is still an abundance of them. Meaning a lot of people get GSDs and then get rid of them. The most common reasons, being they can't handle the breed.
It's very sad to me that GSDs have a very high bite/attack record but I beleive it's due to a few reasons. GSDs are common and popular, more likely to be adopted by unprepared owners, have the capacity to do damage, and are stuck in a loop of labeling. If they're labeled violent and aggressive, they're more likely to be noticed when showing any kind of deviant or bad behaviour. This also makes people eager to overdramatize the situation.
I think there are a ton of truly amazing GSDs owners who provide and care for their dogs. I'm not discrediting them or the breed as a whole. But my strong opinion is that a larger than should be demographic of GSD owners are unprepared and uneducated and thus they've soiled the breeds reputation a bit.
Idk if any of this makes sense, it's 1am lmao but I just loveeee talking about dogs thanks so much for the ask! :D I hope you have a lovely day

ask game by @princeoframs
🐲: Are you otherkin or therian?
Otherkin technically, I suppose; theriomythic in specific.
🐾: What are your kintype(s)?
I used to believe I was only a polymorph for a long time. Recently I've whittled away even more at the mystery of myself with a friend's (very useful!) help (their URL is @dawnwyrm) and discovered I can still change forms, it's just that I'm a shapeshifting eastern dragon instead of a wobbly and self-uncertain polymorph. Not hating upon polymorphs at all! It just was the closest fitting thing for a time...but ultimately wasn't the case.
☀️: What was your awakening like? When was it?
I've always felt Other and Just Not Human Enough all my childhood. I learned about the concept of "otherkin" as a teen here on Tumblr during the Superwholockvengers, and Rise Of the Tangled Dragons type stuff heydays. I initially turned my nose up at it, wary of it since so many others seemed to mock it viciously. But the idea stuck with me stubbornly, and I went through numerous phases of latching onto fave characters that were not me in the end. Bluestar from Warrior Cats, Star Catcher from MLP gen3, then I tried being fictherian and therian, in the identities of a sable working line GSD and a meowth + persian pokemon...these did not stick either.
🤝: When did you first hear about the kin community?
Like I said, I was a wee widdle teeny-bopper. 14-16?
💪: Do you experience phantom limbs?
Yes.
💐: Do you experience any other shifts?
Moving ears and antlers.
💙: What’s your favorite shift you get? Why?
Mobile tails, moving ears, and antlers on my head.
🚫: What’s your least favorite shift? Why?
Hm...I don't really have a "least favorite," I think?
✅: Can you make yourself shift?
It's kinda always, consistently happening? Pretty much?
💫: Do you have shift triggers, or do they happen randomly?
Mostly randomly, but sometimes I see an art piece or a video that triggers it.
🧠: Do you have memories?
I have noema/noemata, more like, since I am not precisely a past-lifer. Not spiritual. More like a parallel life believer + a psychological alterhuman? I can understand a multiverse type thing.
💚: What’s your favorite thing about your kintype? (The species, creature, etc)
The power! I guess. The ability to change my body on a whim and back, too. The power thing is why I believe I have a psychological kintype, because I've been so powerless and hurt for much of my life. This part of me developed exactly in response to that helplessness. And I am okay with that. It helps me a lot.
🌀: Do you think kins are spiritual or psychological in nature?
It depends on the experiences of the individual!
🗣: Does anyone know you are otherkin? Friends, family, etc? If so, how did you tell them?
Nobody offline in my life knows about me, nor do they probably have the ability to understand the concept.
👯‍♂️: Do you have any friends who are also kin?
I have a ton of altH friends who are only online.
🧘‍♂️: Do you mediate?
Not really. Not good at it.
💤: Do you get kin dreams?
Sorta. I get a lot of dreams where I fly like an eastern dragon should, usually as a method of getting away from monsters or captors in the dream.
🐯: Do you wish you were your kintype? Why or why not?
Yes. Very much so. It would be amazing. And I could always just shapeshift back into my human body whenever I wanted to!
🧝‍♀️: Do you own any gear? If so, what items do you have and do you like to wear them?
I do not own any gear yet.
👀: Give a controversial opinion/your stance on some type of discourse.
Huh. I dunno....ah. Factkin are uncomfortable for me if they identify with people still alive. Heck, identifying with real people from history is still kinda...off to me. But I respect them anyhow because, well, what can I do about it? It's how they see themselves, and so long as they are not hurting anyone, I don't have much room to speak.
🏔: What makes you feel closer to your kintype(s)?
Rivers, beaches, flying in the clouds (I've only been on a plane...3 times in my life, I think?).
✨: What are some things that validate you?
I uh...have never really been validated, I think? Sad to say. Though I did have a great dream a couple of months ago featuring my dead grandma and she told me to get an eastern dragon-y tattoo. Now I know why! Thanks Grammy!
🌈: Talk about any other kin thing!
Dunno what else to say. I'm just glad I've finally figured myself out.
🍄: Anon asks any question they want about your kin stuff!
Ask away, nonnies!!
