I have lived in the country most of my adult life. Itโs not that I dislike my fellow humans. Itโs really quite the opposite; people fascinate me. My career as a Realtor keeps me in a constant state of communication. Helping others achieve life goals is basically my job description. While real estate can be hectic, I strive to keep my personal and professional lives drama-free. I adore my family, friends and clients, apply empathy and simply do my best to respectfully avoid the oddballs of our species. It is a strategy that has served me well.
Ultimately, I am energized by nature. The allure of open spaces, complemented by the mystery of pungent forests speaks to my imagination. I feel safer in the country, more at home among the deer, dragonflies and possums than I do in a sea of suburban sprawl. I never tire of the simplistic beauty of farm houses, antique barns, old general stores or corn fields. I never met a tree I didnโt like. I would rather stare at a starry sky than watch TV. Whether in the coastal regions of Virginia or the humble, yet majestic, Blue Ridge Mountains, I am never happier than when I am in my element, wrapped in a virtual quilt of country comfort.
So, when I fell in love and married 3 years ago, my move to a true โneighborhoodโ was a major adjustment. After living for years in the midst of mass acreage, I found myself in a 1970s era community on the outskirts of an industrial park. Love will make you do strange things like that. And while I love my husband with all my heart, I cannot say I feel the same for my new home. Oh, sure...itโs convenient. No more 50 minute rides to see a concert or attend a sales meeting. There are parks and other โperksโ nearby, lots of shopping, sushi and Mexican, my favorite eats. I no longer have to spend 6 hours cutting grass on my day off or sweat my lack of well and septic when the power goes out. My gratitude for our sturdy home is genuine. But itโs just not the same. My soul feels out of place. I feel like a bird in a cage.
No doubt my poor husband knows how I feel. He watched me sob uncontrollably as my imminent move approached. Following our nuptials, we had purposely delayed my move, knowing there was work yet to be done at his current home. Plus, we loved my rental, a 1900 built farm home, owned for generations by the same family. He had come to love the escape it provided, sensational sunsets and nights punctuated by a coyoteโs howl. It was old and wild, dignified, though delightfully outdated. We froze our butts off in that house, poorly insulated with a decrepit oil heater. Perhaps that home helped us to fall in love, clinging tightly to each other for warmth in the night. Balmier days were spent on porches or lounging under massive, 100 year old pecan trees. It was pure magic. And it was hard to leave.
There is hope one day for another country charmer, a second home, perhaps. Somewhere the neighbors are more than a stoneโs throw away, the roads are rimmed by lily-filled ditches and hawks soar overhead. The Eastern Shore of Virginia has always called to me, with its rich farming traditions, the Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic Ocean throwing salt and scent. Yet, the Blue Ridge has also held my heart, the Shenandoah Valley being one of the prettiest sights of my mindโs eye. There are still many great choices for rural living in Chesapeake, Isle of Wight and Southampton County. Virginia Beachโs quaint and curious Pungo, would be my childhood dream come true.
Alas, at my age, will I ever have this chance again?
For now, I will live vicariously through my real estate clients as I help them to pursue their own dreams of โcage freeโ living, assisting their quest for organic peace in an ever chaotic world. I envision this blog as another place to explore and expound my first love: all things country. And yes, I may post about properties for sale, homes that illustrate a unique, admirable lifestyle. More importantly, words about life itself... sung from the throat of a wayward sparrow that chose a new nest, but hopes that someday, she will find her way home.
