Guess who just watched Bullhead and now wants a scene in either 2o2g or the 3rd film of Booker in cuffs going feral in an elevator - single-handedly taking out 4-5 police officers by headbutting them and choking another one out with a foot against their throat?

“Mijn heel leven niks anders gekend dan beesten. Ik heb mij altijd juist gevoeld zoals die stieren. Nooit geweten wat het was om iemand te beschermen. Kalveren, een kudde, gelijk een vrouw, kinderen. Echt moeten beschermen. Omdat ‘t moet, omdat ‘t in uw natuur zit. Ik heb niet wat in m’n natuur had moeten zitten.”
(My whole life known nothing else but beasts. I’ve always felt exactly like those bulls. Never known what it was like to protect someone. Calves, a herd, like a wife, children. To really have to protect. Because you must, because it’s in your nature. I don’t have what should’ve been in my nature.)

Watched the Oscar-nominated first movie of Belgian director Michaël Roskam, “Bullhead” (original title: “Rundskop”) (2011).
The comparison with “Raging Bull” is understandable because the emotions in this movie are as raw and visceral as they are in Scorsese’s film, but that’s where the comparison ends.
This is NOT a movie about a boxer but about a Flemish farmer. Nor is the principal character (a breakthrough role of Belgian actor Matthias Schoenaerts) at fault as the self-destructive Jake LaMotta clearly was: his inevitable descent into hell is the tragic result of physical abuse he suffered as a child and lousy circumstances created by criminals who take advantage of him.
This is an uppercut of a movie and the fainthearted should skip it.
The voiceover (narrated by the director himself) that opens the movie over lovely images of Flemish countryside in the mist sets the tone: “No matter what you do or think, one thing’s for sure. You’re always fucked. Now, tomorrow, next week or next year, until the end of time. Fucked.”
You can discover a gem if you’re up to it!
