this is by no means coherent but I just wanted to talk about a few amazing devil lyrics that get me

“I might not make it tonight” (drinking song for the socially anxious) when I first heard the song I thought this was “make it” as in staying alive. Obviously it’s actually supposed to be “make it” in the sense of going to a party but that first impression makes that song twice as painful for me

“Hold me lover like you used to, so tight I’d bruise you” (wild blue yonder) this one gets me because of the wording. hold me like asking the other person to take the action, along with I’d bruise you, like you’re hurting the other person even though they’re the one holding you that close. and then later it’s I’d bruise you too which. idk. they’re both getting hurt here.

“To the dark I said pour and forgot to say when” (blossoms) I just love that imagery okay. it’s tragic. you called the dark upon yourself and then didn’t stop it.

“Look at me as you say this (you’re home) don’t look at your phone” (battle cries) idk just the mention of a phone in this song throws me off because of the sheer ancient fae power of the song itself. I know that later on it mentions television but ghhh. battle cries is not a song I can listen to and not lose my breath about

“It cannot be a lie if no one hears” (Elsa’s song) I made a whole other post about that one but I can’t find it.

“You’re the words that I promise I don’t mean” (horror and the wild) this one is up there with like. “I’m the hardest goodbye that you’ll ever have to say” (farewell wanderlust) in the Hurting Me To My Very Core category. just. the inevitability of both lines “I promise I don’t mean” but you still said them. and “you’ll ever” means you WILL have to say that goodbye. plus the de-personification or whatever the term is

(while we’re on it. “I’m the hardest goodbye that you’ll ever have to say” plus the differing pronouns in that verse makes my transgender heart ACHE)
