Funguary Week 2!

We had massive power, communications, transport and train blackouts this week. I lost a lot of food in freezers and so on. But I'm still going. Things are a bit chaotic, but we are still going strong.

Rubroboletus satanas (Lenz) Kuan Zhao & Zhu L. Yang is a basidiomycete inside the family Boletaceae. It is characterised by its big stature (even 20-30cm of cap diameter), an unpleasant smell in mature specimens and by the olivaceous tinges in the cap cuticle. Its reticulated stipe moreover is normally divided into two areas of colors: the upper part near the pores is yellowish and the lower part (3/4) is red. It only grows on calcareous soils under Fagaceae. Poisonous, it can cause severe Gastrointestinal syndrome if ingested raw, possibly all of its co-genus brothers are also poisonous. That said as a warning, in Sicily and in Abruzzo (Italy) it is consumed after various laborious processes that involve parboiling and salt. Rubroboletus satanas

Rubroboletus satanas, commonly known as the Satan's bolete is a basidiomycete fungus of the bolete family. It was known scientifically as Boletus satanas until 2014. Found on chalky soil in mixed woodlands in the southern, warmer regions of Europe, it is generally regarded as a poisonous mushroom, with predominantly gastrointestinal symptoms of nausea and violent vomiting occurring if eaten raw or fried. However, reports of poisoning are rare due to its odd appearance and at times putrid smell minimising casual experimentation. There are reports of its traditional consumption in the former Czechoslovakia and Italy after thorough cooking (frying does not remove the toxin).[citation needed] The squat, brightly coloured fruiting bodies are large and imposing, with a pale dull-coloured velvety cap up to 30 cm (12 in) wide, blood red pores and bulbous red-patterned stalk. The flesh turns blue when cut or bruised. There is a smell of carrion, more noticeable with age. It is the largest bolete growing in Europe. More details Android, Windows
