FOTD #096 : enokitake! (flammulina filiformis)

enokitake (sometimes shortened to enoki) is an agaric fungus in the family physalacriaceae. it grows naturally on dead wood in china, korea & japan, but is now cultivated commercially almost worldwide !!

the big question : can i bite it?? yeah, absolutely :-) it is eaten in many different countries & has good nutritional value.

f. filiformis description :

"individual fruit bodies are up to 50 millimetres (2 inches) tall, the cap convex at first, becoming flat when expanded, up to 45 mm (1+3⁄4 in) across. the cap surface is smooth, viscid when damp, ochraceous yellow to yellow-brown. the lamellae (gills) are cream to yellowish white. the stipe (stem) is smooth, pale yellow at the apex, yellow-brown to dark brown towards the base, & lacking a ring."

remember that post where i said i want to make a powerpoint with my take on fungi horses that id love to see in sso?? well im too lazy to do so but!!!!! i made some moodboards and painted some horse designs. theyr not anatomically correct bc idc also i cant draw horses or anything, those r just some loose ideas and doodles but i thought this may be fun to share anyway!!

ok so

heres a doodle of uhh im not sure what species to be exact,,,,,,, i wanted to base this one on enoki mushrooms for @everwindfields​. apparently the way Flammulina filiformis looks like depends on if the mushroom grows in the sunlight or not and i find it so so interesting bc look, it would be so so fun if the magical and non magical versions were based on that?? right????

my problem is that there is also Flammulina velutipes and those r two different species even tho they were thought to be the same i believe?? but theyr not!! and i used the european version as a reference bc im a silly silly person!!!!

so heres pomiennica zimowa (a polish common name). its edible (ppl often use it in soups)(an alternative to pea soups perhaps??) and can be found in the winter as the name suggests. but!! the word promiennica is related to “flame” or it reminds me of it at least ok. so i went for a warmer theme with this one and will make a winter themed version next as the um actual enoki mushroom,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

It was reported that a hydrophobin gene, Hyd9, played an important role in the formation of aerial mycelia and primordia in Flammulina filiformis (Agaricales) by RNAi and overexpression. Though the first characterized hydrophobin was SC3 from mushroom-forming fungus Schizophyllum commune (Agaricales), hydrophobins in mushrooms are far from well studied. It seemed that the function of hydrophobic proteins was species specific. Similar results were reported for Botrytis cinerea (Helotiales) in which none of the hydrophobin mutants showed obvious phenotypic defects. Contrary to these reports, individual deletion of the five hydrophobin genes ( HYD1- 5) in Fusarium verticillioides (Hypocreales) indicated that none were required for virulence in a corn seedling infection assay. In mycoparasite fungi Trichoderma longibrachiatum (Hypocreales), hydrophobins affected hydrophobicity of conidia, disease resistance, pathogenicity and plant growth promotion activity. Hydrophobins were required for conidial hydrophobicity and plant root colonization in the fungal biocontrol agent Clonostachys rosea (Hypocreales). acridum (Hypocreales), specifically activated the humoral and cellular immunity of its own host insects. CmAreA, a transcription factor of nitrogen regulatory, is recruited to the promoter of Cmhyd1 and activates the transcription of Cmhyd1 with coactivator CmOTam using electrophoretic mobility shift assays and transient luciferase expression in tobacco. Cmhyd1 also participates in stress response, including tolerance of mycelia to osmotic and oxidative stresses, and conidia to high or low temperatures. Cmhyd1 plays roles in conidiation and cuticle-bypassing infection by regulating the transcripts of frequency clock protein, Cmfrq, and velvet protein, Cmvosa, as well as primordium formation via the mitogen-activated protein kinase signaling pathway. Here, deletion of Cmhyd1 results in reduction in aerial mycelia, conidiation, hydrophobicity and infection ability, and complete inhibition of pigmentation and primordium differentiation. Cmhyd1, one of the hydrophobin class II members in Cordyceps militaris, has been shown to have a high transcript level during fruiting body development. Hydrophobins are a family of small proteins exclusively secreted by fungi, and play a variety of roles in the life cycle.

Personality

Flam is a curious and excitable girl, with a body as strong as her personality. She gets pegged as a troublemaker by most adults, and not without good reason, but to their surprise, she's quite a responsible and effective leader when the need arises. Trivia

Flam's name comes from a variety of mushroom, specifically Flammulina velutipes/filiformis, also known as the velvet shank or enokitake.

i'm a super picky eater & there are few mushrooms commercially sold in my area, but i do enjoy white button mushrooms & enokitake :-)

for buttons i like them on homemade pizzas or a creamy pasta, & for enoki i like them in a south african dish called potjiekos (translating literally to "little pot food").

i mainly just eat white button mushrooms plain & raw cos i enjoy the strange texture !! :-)
