By Snejana Farberov and Ronny Reyes
An NYU adjunct professor and firebrand pro-Palestinian activist told a group of students at a recent “teach-in” that allegations that Hamas beheaded Israeli babies were “not true” — and denounced New York City as “Zionist,” according to a video from the event.
Amin Husain, 48, led a foul-mouthed discussion about the war in Israel at The New School, organized by the radical group Students for Justice in Palestine, on Dec. 5, during which he defended the Palestinians’ right to fight for their liberation — and played down claims of Hamas atrocities.
“They’re trying to say … ‘Oh my God, you support rapists and people that behead babies,’ both of which, whatever, we know it’s not true,” Husain says in a 2-minute clip taken from the livestream of the event that was first obtained by the Free Press.
The professor’s claims sparked outrage in the local and international Jewish community regarding the growing incidents of antisemitism in NYU and US college campuses.
Roz Rothstein, co-founder and CEO of StandWithUs — an international nonpartisan education group that supports Israel and fights antisemitism — said Husain’s comments were anti-Jewish and condemned any school that would hire him.
Tumblr media
5NYU adjunct professor Amin Husain is seen in a video during a “teach-in” at The New School on Dec. 5.
“Shame on this professor for collaborating with the internationally recognized terrorist group, Hamas, by denying the documented rapes, beheadings, kidnappings and murders of over 1400 human beings,” Rothstein said in a statement to The Post. “He is harming civil society by promoting lies and justifying barbaric attacks against the Jewish people, and by being proud of being called an antisemite, which he is.
“It is deeply concerning and unfortunate that any academic institution would have such dangerous staff serving as role models,” he added.
Eitan Gutenmacher, 21, a Jewish student at NYU’s Gallatin School of Individualized Study where Husain taught, said he was horrified by the professor’s statements but not surprised.
Gutenmacher, leader of the New Zionist Congress nonprofit group, said Husain has been notorious at the Gallatin School for his antisemitic views, adding that Jewish students know not to take any of his classes.
“He’s proud of being called an antisemite and it’s extremely concerning to see that in a seemingly progressive liberal arts college,” Gutenmacher said.
In the recording, Husain, a part-time faculty member of NYU’s Gallatin School of Individualized Study, is seen seated behind a desk, wearing a traditional Arabic keffiyeh headdress and facing his audience.
“We live in a Zionist city,” Husain proclaims. “Let’s be f—ing real … these people can come up and say because of keffiyeh, you should go back to your country.”
One of the students chimes in: “We’re trying.”

Following these events, protests broke out on college campuses – and pro-Palestinian demonstrations frightened Jewish students for, in many cases, sympathizing with Hamas' crimes and justifying them.
"The barbarity and pure evil of the unspeakable acts committed by these terrorists against civilians - men, women, and children - shocked the world. But what was just as shocking was what we saw next: college students and faculty cheering these attacks," Goldstein said.
At Cornell University, students told Fox News Digital they felt unsafe when a professor, Russell Rickford, said he was "exhilarated" after the Hamas terrorist attack. Students at Cornell, and around the country, also faced hostile rhetoric and chants from their peers such as calls for the elimination of Israel "From the river to the sea" and for "Intifada" – the Arabic word for "uprising" that also refers to violent Palestinian resistance efforts.

The hostilities from the anti-Israel crowd – and their disruptions – led Brandeis University, Rutgers, Columbia University and George Washington University to suspend its Students for Justice in Palestine chapters. The SJP's national chapter called the Hamas terrorist attack a "historic win" for Palestinian resistance.
SJP was contacted for comment.
Brandeis cited concerns about whether the group's rhetoric was supportive of Hamas. It reminded students that such behavior "will be considered to be in violation of the University’s student code of conduct."
In the most extreme case, GWU students projected Palestinian phrases on a school building stating, "Glory to our martyrs."
The State of Florida, under the DeSantis administration, directed its colleges to terminate student chapters that support "Hamas terrorism." The directive warned that it was a "felony under Florida law to knowingly provide material support … to a designated foreign terrorist organization."
"Students for Justice in Palestine and its related groups have not only repeatedly cheered antisemitic terrorism, they have advocated importing it to America," said Liora Rez from StopAntisemitism, referring to chants for "Intifada."
Tumblr media

Roz Rothstein of the pro-Israel group StandWithUs told Fox News she believed SJP chapters have feigned concern for social justice in order to gain supporters, and then laid the groundwork for "extreme campus antisemitism."
Jewish students had, for years, complained about campus antisemitism at universities. But it came to a boiling point when the nation heard the leaders of the most elite universities in the country voluntarily showed up to a congressional hearing and then refused to state that calls for genocide against Jews violated its policy. Donors pulled their money, firms threatened to strip recruitments, and now some students are questioning their interests in elite institutions such as Harvard.
"For over two decades, we’ve raised concerns about this issue… and it appears that now, finally, our warnings are resonating with the wider public," Cohen said.

PROTEST TO END JEW HATRED AT BEN & JERRY'SWITH A MARCH TO BEN & JERRY’S NYC
Thursday, August 12, 2021 at 5:30 PM
(DOWNLOAD POSTERS HERE)
Steps of the New York Public Library, 476 5th Ave, New York, NY 10018.
The event will have private security and NYPD presence
PROTEST FOLLOWED BY A WEEK OF ACTION AGAINST BEN & JERRY’S
ACROSS THE WORLD (SEE BELOW)
COALITION OF ELECTED OFFICIALS, RELIGIOUS LEADERS AND COMMUNITY ADVOCATES JOIN THE #ENDJEWHATRED MOVEMENT, TO PROTEST BEN & JERRY’S “HALF-BAKED” DECISION TO DISCRIMINATE AGAINST JEWS
Assemblymember Daniel Rosenthal, Councilmember Kalman Yeger, and Coalition of Jewish Community Organizations Join the #EndJewHatred Movement to Reject Hate
Advocates To Hand Out Ice Cream and Denounce Corporate Boycotts of Jewish People and Jewish-Owned Businesses in Judea
In the wake of Ben & Jerry’s racist decision to stop selling ice cream in Judea and Samaria, elected officials, religious leaders, and community advocates are holding a protest to #EndJewHatred at Ben & Jerry’s, and to oppose anti-Semitic and illegal commercial boycotts against Jewish people and the Jewish state. The protest comes as officials in at least 5 states - Texas, Florida, New York, New Jersey, and Illinois - express their deep concern and intentions to evaluate whether to divest their public pension funds from Ben & Jerry’s parent company, Unilever. Local NYC institutions, such as Morton Williams and Gristedes have reduced their offerings of Ben & Jerry’s products in New York.
Ben & Jerry’s illegal boycott is the biggest act of corporate antisemitism since Airbnb – which ended up settling multiple lawsuits and reversing its discriminatory policy. Ben & Jerry’s act creates an atmosphere where Jew-hatred is legitimized, and emboldens violence against Jews. Just this past weekend, mobs demanding global violence against Jews took to the streets of Brooklyn. This is a consequence of normalizing Jew-hatred, which is what Ben & Jerry’s is doing.
Activists and community leaders will hand out free ice cream and educational materials about the dangerous movement to boycott Jewish people [the so-called Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement] and call for a “week of action” at Ben & Jerry’s stores and properties around the world. Protestors will then march to Ben & Jerry’s and receive free ice-cream from its competitors who don’t engage in Jew-hatred and discrimination.
Elected officials including Assemblymember Daniel Rosenthal, Councilmember Kalman Yeger, and a coalition of numerous Jewish community organizations join the #EndJewHatred movement in calling for a boycott of Ben & Jerry’s and complete State divestment from its parent company Unilever, unless Unilever reverses its bigoted and discriminatory decision. The #EndJewHatred movement is mobilizing thousands of activists, starting with a major protest on August 12th in New York City to end racism in corporate policies.
"The recent decisions undertaken by Ben & Jerry's and Unilever betray the insidious nature of the BDS movement," said Assembly Member Daniel Rosenthal. "Whether through negligent ignorance or willful action, the BDS movement is normalizing hate and antisemitism across our country. New York stands with the worldwide Jewish community in rejecting this rhetoric and calling on Ben & Jerry's to reverse their position."
Said Club Z Founder and Executive Director Masha Merkulova, and #EndJewHatred co-founder and activist, “When Ben & Jerry’s board decided to stop selling in Judea, Jews around the world immediately understood the long history of antisemitism that went into it. Let’s be clear: we reject the premise that Jews are anything other than the indigenous people who are now living in their ancestral homeland. To call Jews in Judea illegal, is an expression of bigotry and racist Jew-hatred.   To call for a Judenrein state of Palestine, is nothing but modern Nazism.  Unilever’s racist decision will have negative repercussions for both the Jews and Muslims who work side by side, and whose livelihoods depend on the stable employment that Ben & Jerry’s Israel provides. This half-baked decision should be reversed immediately. Club Z proudly stands up to mobilize our youth against hate and the normalization of the Jew-hater movement known as the BDS movement."
Said The Lawfare Project Executive Director Brooke Goldstein, and #EndJewHatred co-founder and activist, “It’s so encouraging to see the Jewish community and our allies unified around a single demand, to end Jew-hatred at Ben & Jerry's, and in corporations generally. There is no place for racism and bigotry, especially by major corporations like Unilever, in the 21st century.  Ben & Jerry’s fateful decision to engage in a commercial boycott of Jewish people and Jewish-owned businesses, is already proving to have major social and legal consequences.  The movement to sever the Jewish connection to the land of Israel is a hateful campaign of modern-day colonialism, cultural genocide and indigenous erasure.”
Said Roz Rothstein, Co-Founder and CEO of StandWithUs, an international education organization that supports Israel and combats antisemitism, "It should be clear by now that Ben & Jerrys board has made a dreadful mistake by blaming only Israel for the lack of peace while ignoring variables like Hamas terrorism, abuse of the Palestinian people by their own despotic leadership, and Palestinian rejection of Israel’s many peace offers. We sincerely hope that Unilever and Ben & Jerry's will go the way of AirBnB and resort to full relations and business with Israel for the sake of Israelis and Palestinians alike."
‍WHAT: Protest to #EndJewHatred at Ben & Jerry’s with a march to Ben & Jerry’s NYC and free ice cream, followed by a week of action against Ben & Jerry’s across the world
WHEN: Thursday, August 12, 2021 at 5:30 PM
WHERE: Steps of the New York Public Library. 476 5th Ave, New York, NY 10018.

Steve Kramer – Celebrating Israel’s 71 Anniversary
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
Just 71 years ago, Israel declared its independence based on several factors:
God promised the Land of Israel to the Jews in the Bible – echoed in the Christian Bible and even (gasp!) in the Koran.
Three ancient Jewish kingdoms in Israel are part of archaeological and historical records.
Early 20th century diplomatic agreements called for a national home for the Jews in Israel.
The League of Nations issued a Mandate for Palestine*in which a Jewish national home would be established.
The United Nations issued a 1947 Partition Plan allowing for the establishment of the Jewish state in Palestine. (“Palestine” is the name Roman Emperor Hadrian called the Land of Israel, in an attempt to erase its Jewish connections.)
After the fact, the United Nations recognized Israel’s independence and three times Israel fought and won defensive wars against Arab invaders, thereby incorporating its ancient homeland into Israel.
As many of my readers know, Yom Ha’atzmaut (Independence Day) is preceded by Yom HaShoah (Holocaust Remembrance Day the previous week) and Yom HaZikaron (Remembrance Day for victims of terror and military personnel the previous day), which segues into Yom Ha’atzmaut. Here there are no SALES on Yom HaZikaron, nor is it a day off from work, nor are entertainment venues open. But 24 hours after the start of Yom HaZikaron, the nation’s mood changes dramatically from solemnity to excitement. The country riotously celebrates the reality of the Jewish State, a nation which has an amazing number of accomplishments in its brief history.
  Just a few:
In its first decade, Israel absorbed a huge influx of immigrants, more than doubling its population.
Israel’s Jewish population has burgeoned from 600,000 in 1948 to about 6.3 million today.
Israel is the only Western country with a birthrate which more than replaces itself, with 3.1 children per mother.
Israel’s population is one of the world’s happiest.
Israel is a member of the OECD, the “club” of the world’s most prosperous nations.
Israel is the per capita leader in high tech development, its main engine of economic growth.
Israel is the safe home for Jews who face increasing Jew hatred in their countries of birth.
That’s enough about history and statistics. What about the fun part?
During the morning of Yom Ha’atzmaut, we visit Israeli sites. This year we went to an historical site and museum that we hadn’t visited previously, attended the almost mandatory barbecue in the afternoon, and a few days later, a gala celebrating one of the best organizations defending Israel’s reputation.
With our usual Yom Ha’atzmaut buddies, we set out early and soon arrived in Holon, which has the second-largest industrial zone in Israel, but is also known for its extensive attractions for children. Our objective was the Hosmasa Building, which today is surrounded by a lovely urban park in this Tel Aviv suburb. The structure was constructed over an ancient well in 1934 and was built in the prevalent Bauhaus style (German-inspired simplicity and lack of ornamentation, with a symmetric, functional, international design).
Built for defensive reasons, there is an observation tower on the building, storage rooms, and space for personnel to live. During its active period stretching until the 1948 War of Independence, thousands of trainees participated in weapons/field skills, observation, fortifications, communications, first aid, close combat, topography and other courses. There were several “slicks” nearby where weapons (forbidden to Jews, allowed for Arabs by the British during the Mandate period) were secreted.
The Palmach (strike forces) were deployed from around Hosmasa to capture the area to the north and west of Holon, which included Arab villages on the outskirts of Arab-inhabited Jaffa. Hosmasa was an important station on the security road during the war connecting Tel Aviv with settlements in the south of the country, Jerusalem, and the Negev. Today Hosmasa is a popular spot to visit on Yom Ha’atzmaut and also for school excursions throughout the year.
Moving on, we drove the short distance to another, very green, suburb of Tel Aviv. Rishon LeZion is the fourth-largest city in Israel, located along the central Israeli coastal plain south of Tel Aviv. It is one of Israel’s first religious Zionist communities, founded in 1882 and located amidst sand dunes and marsh. On this beautiful day, we were keen to see one of Israel’s newest museums, in Rishon LeZion, featuring the kinetic art of Ya’acov Agam.
  From a Trip Advisor review:
“Mr. Agam is a national treasure and this museum, dedicated in 2017, is a testament to his genius. A force in modern art since the 1950s, this artist continues to work everyday at 92 years old, creating new art that pushes the limits [of one’s imagination]. His whole concept is to invite the viewer to become a partner in the art and creative process. Not optical illusion, but true participatory experience. Visiting gives you real understanding of one of the most important movements and artists of the 20th & 21st centuries.”
Agam’s work is not just museum or home sized. He has three huge projects in the Tel Aviv area. The Dan Hotel’s long frontage on the Mediterranean is completely painted in a huge, idiosyncratic way. Just north of Tel Aviv is a whole development of apartment buildings utilizing Agam’s design aesthetic. And the iconic revolving water fountain (currently being refurbished) which graces the rebuilt Dizengoff Circle in the heart of town.
We loved Agam’s museum! Its size is small enough to allow viewing the whole collection, but interesting enough to ensure more visits. The complexity of the artwork is an amazing accomplishment, combining artistry, geometry, and a command of many materials and technologies. We’ll be sure to bring visitors there, affording ourselves additional chances to enjoy Agam’s work.
A few days later, on the exact Gregorian calendar date for Yom Ha’atzmaut, we attended a fundraiser in Jerusalem for StandWithUs, which is an international, non-profit Israel education organization. Founded in 2001, it is dedicated to educating people of all ages, but mostly young ones, about Israel as well as dedicated to combating the Jew hatred and extremism that often distorts the issues about Israel. Its credo: that knowledge of the facts will correct common prejudices about the Arab-Israeli conflict, and will promote discussions and policies that can help promote peace in the region. Through many avenues, StandWithUs ensures that the story of Israel’s achievements and ongoing challenges gets to middle schools, high schools, and college campuses across the world. StandWithUs has eighteen offices and chapters across the US and internationally. (standwithus.com)
We were treated to hearing several of StandWithUs’s young ambassadors, who described some of the experiences they have had educating and supporting American college students. We were also thrilled to hear Roz Rothstein, a founder and current CEO of the organization. Roz told us how she and others founded this powerhouse just 18 years ago, after waiting in vain for someone else to start this type of proactive effort to defend Israel.
This celebration was a fitting climax to this year’s celebration of Israel’s independence. Israel goes from strength to strength despite its many enemies and doubters. And by the way, this time of year in Israel is a perfect time for your first visit or for your tenth one!

Louisiana Becomes 25th State to Bar Business Ties with Companies Boycotting Israel
26 May 2018
TEL AVIV – Louisiana on Tuesday became the 25th U.S. state to bar state government agencies from doing business with companies that are involved in the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement against Israel.
“The United States, and by affiliation Louisiana, have benefited in innumerable ways from our deep friendship with Israel. Any effort to boycott Israel is an affront to this longstanding relationship. I am pleased that Louisiana will join what is now a critical mass of states in supporting our closest ally,” Gov. John Bel Edwards, a Democrat, said in a statement.
The order directs the state commissioner of administration to terminate existing state contracts with companies that are either currently boycotting Israel or supporting those who do. It further stipulates that future state contracts will first require parties to sign an agreement stating their compliance with the new law.
The executive order specifies BDS and says it hopes to reverse the anti-Israel movement’s aim to isolate the Jewish state. “The state of Louisiana unequivocally rejects the BDS campaign and stands firmly with Israel,” the order reads.
Edwards issued the order on the same night the Governor’s Mansion celebrated the 70th anniversary of Israel’s creation. Earlier on Tuesday, the House passed a resolution praising the anniversary.
Pro-Israel groups lauded Edwards’ move.
The Israel Project said in a statement from its CEO Josh Block:
The Israel Project is grateful to the governor for his leadership in fighting back against BDS discrimination. Advocates of BDS discrimination remain committed to their anti-Semitic agenda of isolating and demonizing the world’s only Jewish State. Its founders have openly called for Israel’s destruction and made it clear that they target Israel’s very existence, not its policies. From the North to South, in blue and red states – and with strong bipartisan support – lawmakers in 25 states have now declared BDS a form of discrimination and sent a clear signal that their states will not tolerate or condone taxpayer dollars going to subsidize anti-Israel hate.
“We are heartened that Louisiana has taken a strong stand opposing discrimination against Israel,” Roz Rothstein, CEO of StandWithUs, said. “Earlier this year, the city of New Orleans rejected an anti-Semitic resolution, and now the state has made clear that taxpayer funds should not support businesses which discriminate.”
The Jewish Federations of North America said that the move marks “a critical moment in which fifty percent of U.S. states have received the message that boycotting Israel is bad for business,” according to a statement released by the group’s Senior Vice President of Public Policy William Daroff.
“These state actions address the discriminatory nature of BDS and the ability for states to control their own commerce. We thank the governor and the many community activists who made this possible in Louisiana,” Daroff added.

California Board of Education Scraps Anti-Israel Ethnic-Studies Curriculum Proposal
The California Board of Education has announced it will scrap its current draft ethnic-studies curriculum and develop a new model curriculum following outrage by California lawmakers, activists and Jewish and pro-Israel groups for its “blatant bias against Israel.”
The California State Board of Education stated that “the current draft model curriculum falls short and needs to be substantially redesigned.”
“Following the Instructional Quality Commission’s review and response to all public comments, a new draft will be developed for State Board of Education review and potential approval. The Board will ultimately adopt an ethnic studies model curriculum that aligns to California’s values.”
Roz Rothstein, CEO of StandWithUs, lauded both the results and the fact that the Jewish community mobilized quickly and as one.
“The pro-Israel community and people of good will stood together, united against a hateful, biased curriculum and demanded change. Our voices were heard. We look forward to seeing a curriculum that is inclusive, and that we can all feel comfortable with.”
The Israeli-American Council also approved the decision by the Board of Education and Gov. Gavin Newsom, but said that they will continue to work to ensure that the new curriculum “will exclude hateful movements such as BDS, as well as any other narratives that demonize Israel and the Jewish people.”
IAC co-founder and CEO Shoham Nicolet said in a statement that “to truly advance the goals of the ethnic-studies curriculum as described by the California Department of Education, we believe that the narratives and experiences of the American Jewish community and the Israeli-American community, which constitutes a distinct ethnic group that faces discrimination, must be included.”
The Jewish Center for Justice also approved the decision.
“The ‘Ethnic Studies Model Curriculum’ that was both anti-Semitic and which erased our long history of struggle, persecution and resistance,” it said.
“That this curriculum was considered at all during a time when hate crimes against Jews in California, and the United States overall, is on the rise is highly disconcerting. We echo the words and leadership of the California Jewish Legislative Caucus, and urge the State Board of Education to propose a curriculum that includes the experiences and voices of the Jewish community without unfairly singling out Israel or ignoring issues of anti-Semitism.”
The AMCHA Initiative said that while they are pleased with the Board of Education’s decision, revamping the curriculum is needs to address the underlying issues of anti-Israel bias.
“The State Board of Education must establish overall safeguards to ensure that abusive and unconscionable attempts to hijack an educational curriculum in order to indoctrinate students with political, religious and ethnic hate are never attempted again,” AMCHA Initiative Director Tammi Rossman-Benjamin said. “If the State Board of Education does not do this, it is imperative that our state’s elected leaders introduce legislation to right this wrong and protect our students.” *Reposted article from the JewishPress.com of August 14, 2019

Andreas Lajst, director of the Brazil chapter of StandWithUs, was to deliver a talk on Aug. 10 at the Federal University of Amazonas about the capacity of Israeli technology to aid isolated Brazilian populations.
When the Arab-Palestinian Federation of Brazil got wind of the event, it wrote online that “the university cannot be a stage to defend an apartheid regime.”
The university’s student union also called Lajst—the grandson of Holocaust survivors—a Nazi.
The university did not cancel the event, and protests that began peacefully turned violent. One anti-Israel activist hit the university rector in the face, fracturing her nose. (This occurred despite the presence of security guards.)
“These days, you must be heroic to voice your opinion if pro-Israel,” wrote Roz Rothstein, founder and CEO of StandWithUs. “Shout-out to the police who helped!”

The pro-Israel group StandWithUs blasted the policy, calling anti-BDS efforts “crucial to ensure American taxpayers are not complicit in the BDS Movement’s discrimination against Israel.”
“Anti-BDS legislation is about ensuring that states will not do business with companies that engage in discrimination on the basis of race, religion, ethnicity, or national origin. Nothing more, nothing less,” said StandWithUs CEO Roz Rothstein.
“It is hypocritical for BDS activists to claim the mantle of free speech, while they themselves frequently try to stop those they disagree with from speaking,” she said in a statement. “We are deeply disappointed that Women’s March Inc. has taken this misleading and divisive stance, which taints an important movement for social justice.”
At the same time, the Women’s Agenda included a reference to Jewish women, who were not mentioned in the group’s original Unity Principles, although they have since been added.

The petition features a letter to University President Joan T.A. Gabel stating that “SJP has a long record of spreading hate, supporting violence, and violating the free speech rights of people they disagree with on campus.” “We are standing up for free speech, academic freedom, diversity, and inclusion on campus,” StandWithUs Co-Founder and CEO Roz Rothstein said in a statement. “National SJP targets Jewish students simply for supporting Israel’s existence, and seeks to isolate and eliminate the world’s only Jewish state. University administrations should denounce SJP’s hate and prevent its chapters from violating student rights.”

StandWithUs Condemns UNESCO Vote Disavowing Israeli Sovereignty In Any Part Of Jerusalem
(LOS ANGELES, May 2, 2017) -- StandWithUs condemns today's vote by UNESCO, which effectively disavows Israel's sovereignty in any part of Jerusalem. This vote also minimizes 3,000 years of Jewish history in the city.
"UNESCO's resolution reconfirms the ongoing politicization that marks the decline of this UN agency. This vote repeats a UN ritual of political assaults against the legitimacy of Israel's presence in its own capital city. Yet it is also clear that the tide is turning, as more nations opposed or abstained than voted in favor of the resolution, despite the fact that Arab states watered it down in hopes of getting wider support," states Roz Rothstein, CEO StandWithUs, an international Israel education organization.
The resolution's text declares: “All legislative and administrative measures and actions taken by Israel, the occupying power, which have altered or purport to alter the character and status of the Holy City of Jerusalem, and in particular the 'basic law' on Jerusalem, are null and must be rescinded forthwith.”
This language in effect rejects Israeli sovereignty over any part of Jerusalem, including the predominantly Jewish western side of the city. It ignores not only three millennia of Jewish association with Jerusalem, but modern history as well.
"This latest assault on Israel's claim to the Jewish people's holiest city will only serve to fuel further conflict, rather than justice and peace between Israelis and Palestinians," Rothstein states.
Since 1950, Jerusalem has served as Israel's capital. Jews are indigenous to Jerusalem (and the rest of the country) having maintained a continuous, unbroken presence there for over 3,000 years since King David made the city his capital in the 10th century BCE. For centuries, Jerusalem was the capital city of Jewish kingdoms, the location of Judaism's holiest sites, and the historical focus of Jewish political life.
The 1947 UN Resolution 181 (the “Partition Plan”) would have established two independent states (one Jewish, and the other Arab) in the former British Mandate of Palestine. It also called for Jerusalem to be internationalized. The Arab side flatly rejected this UN compromise and went to war to prevent its implementation. This military aggression effectively rendered the Partition Plan null and void.
In the 1948 war, Jordan illegally occupied eastern Jerusalem, forcing thousands of Jews out of their homes in the Old City and other neighborhoods. Jordanian forces destroyed fifty-eight synagogues and desecrated the two-thousand-year-old Mount of Olives Jewish cemetery. Jews were prohibited from visiting their holy sites.
In response to Jordanian aggression in 1967, Israel liberated Jerusalem. Since then, members of all faiths have enjoyed religious freedom and free access to their holy sites in Jerusalem. Today there are over 50 churches and 33 mosques operating freely in the city.
