So hear me out. Yknow ye baiyi and rong changqing. What if yby gets hanahaki but when he becomes immortal it doesn’t cure it it just means that it can’t kill him, and so yby has this progressive terrible disease that gets far worse than it would be capable of getting in a normal living person, and he continues to have it even after rcq dies

Writing Patterns
@momosandlemonsoda and @yletylyf both tagged me in the writing pattern game -- post the first sentences of your ten last works on AO3, and see if you recognise a pattern.
10 -- A Ruthless Gift Mysterious Lotus Casebook, post-canon, Fang Duobing/Di Feisheng “Tea, or wine?”
9 -- The World of the Morning After Word of Honor, AU where Rong Changqing survived, Rong Changqing/Ye Baiyi Ye Baiyi could have sworn he’d fallen asleep on a bolster of lilac brocade; when he woke in the wintery pre-dawn, there was a living, breathing person beneath his cheek.
8 -- Surnamed Di -- 姓氏:笛 Mysterious Lotus Casebook, post-canon, Fang Duobing/Di Feisheng, sequel to "A Ruthless Gift" “I’ll go to Lotus Lodge this morning to water the plants and feed the crab,” Fang Duobing declared, finally sitting up, “so you can stay here and work with your kids. They see you rarely enough.”
7 -- Best at Flying Mysterious Lotus Casebook, 1K character prompt: the suggestion to make amnesiac!A-Fei perform on the street to draw attention, Di Feisheng/Li Lianhua/Fang Duobing A-Fei kept observing, mostly. If you’re not certain of the world, if every corner could be a trap, every smile a lie, then it would be better to hang back, better to wait and see, speak when you were spoken to, act only when you were sure.
6 -- The Goat as Gardener Word of Honor, 1K character prompt: Ye Baiyi and "What would happen to a houseplant in their care?" , one-sided Ye Baiyi/Rong Changqing “She’s not going to kill you if they don’t all survive,” Rong Changqing had told Ye Baiyi after Rong-furen had finally stopped with her instructions, repeated instructions, and even more admonitions.
5 -- The Red Queen's Domain Mysterious Lotus Casebook, Star Trek AU Episode 1, Fang Duobing/Li Lianhua, Di Feisheng/Li Lianhua The only light inside the cave came from the cryo pod set up right in the middle of it.
4 -- The End of the Tether Mysterious Lotus Casebook, post-canon, Fang Duobing/Di Feisheng, sequel to "A Ruthless Gift" and "Surnamed Di" After thinking about it for a long time, Fang Duobing had to admit that Di Feisheng was right about the horses.
3 -- Detoxify Mysterious Lotus Casebook et.al., modern AU, Di Feisheng/Fang Duobing/Li Lianhua (and lots of others in the background), long-ass MLC instalment of my even longer City AU “Shulin, you have to help me, you really do!”
2 -- Tomb Raiding For Beginners Mysterious Lotus Casebook, Star Trek AU Episode 2, Fang Duobing/Li Lianhua, Di Feisheng/Li Lianhua “Okay, let’s pack up, we're going to the Sarculum colony,” Li Lianhua declared when he beamed in from the planet. Fang Duobing had gone to the transporter room to do this manually; Li Lianhua preferred it that way.
1 -- Quagmire Mysterious Lotus Casebook, Star Trek AU Episode 3, Fang Duobing/Li Lianhua, Di Feisheng/Li Lianhua A-Fei crouched, turning on his heel and slashing his weapon along the floor of the cargo bay; Fang Duobing jumped, but not fast enough. The penultimate prong caught him on the shin, hard.
Patterns I can recognise:
I like to start on dialogue or internal monologue.
In the Star Trek AU, I always start on action or some actual movement, as I prefer to have a cold open before the 'title card' for the episode. I want it to feel like Star Trek.
I like to have the main character(s) present in the first sentence right away.
Bonus: I really need to finish and post the last chapter of 'Detoxify'. I have the structure ready and the first quarter written. I refuse to let this massive fic end on 'and then they packed up the bus and went away to a warm beach' and nothing more.
I'm not good at tagging people, and have lost sight of who in the fandom has done this exercise already -- if you see this, feel yourself tagged!

Thinking about Rongye.
There’s something so painfully satisfying about the rude, sarcastic, Best of His Generation martial artist becoming best friends with the most personable guy around.
Like, Rong Changqing is this talented blacksmith who gets along with everyone and he manages to catch the attention of the one asshole who picks fights with all of his peers. He really cracked through YBY’s pretentious exterior.
The tragedy of YBY achieving immortality and cutting himself off from the rest of the world because it has nothing to offer him anymore. All the longing that he kept secret and the grief he carried with him for years and years and years. Everything that could’ve been but never was.
I just….

For better yesterdays by @tbgkaru-woh
This is a beautiful fic. I didn’t know what I was getting into when I clicked on it, the tags kinda explain what is going on but make much more sense in retrospect. A combination of YeXie and RongYe

Ye Baiyi stared at him, at the face he knew better than his own. At the smile that never failed to make his heart race, at the eyes that held more stars than the night sky. He could feel his lips tremble and his nose start to run. His throat was tight and his voice was raw, and he wiped his sleeve over his damp cheeks and said, "Changqing."
"I'm here," answered Rong Changqing, just as he'd promised.
"Ch-Changqing," Ye Baiyi said again, hating the wavering of his voice, the wobbling of his jaw, the shaking of his entire body--but unable to make it stop, unable to help himself.
"I'm here," said Rong Changqing, arms coming up to embrace Ye Baiyi very carefully. The touch was so welcome, it was almost painful--it felt so good to be held that it almost hurt, and Ye Baiyi could not stifle the sob that came from the depths of his heart.
"Changqing-ah," he wailed, only this time it was muffled by Rong Changqing's robes, and so no one else but the pair of them could hear the broken sound, or Rong Changqing's soothing murmurs of, "I'm here, Yiyi. I'm here."
Falling (With Style) on Ao3 !!!

hsr oc brainrot has been Really getting me lately .... introducing Yufen (she / her) and Rongye (they / them), both of whom are Very pertinent to Huang's backstory!!
the Gist of their story is a academic rivals -> friends -> lovers -> exes -> ???, but huang is Also there and that makes things a little awkward (because. well. rongye Is huang's creator) yufen and rongye went to the same academic institution in the Xianzhou Luofu, and the two often butted heads. as time went by, yufen ended up pursuing business while rongye remained in the artisanship commission / engineering work. the two of them matched each other intellectually despite their different personalities. time progressed, and their relationship developed with one another <3 there was a major incident that separated the two of them years ago. yufen disappeared on significantly extended business trips, while rongye became even more of a recluse than before. rongye themself seemed to disappear, and near the present, yufen is finally returning for a longer stay back in the Xianzhou Luofu ^^

a guide to Rong Changqing's famous swords in TYK
i was talking about the three swords rong changqing created with @minnarr recently and decided to write up what all we know about them in TYK. if i've gotten something wrong or missed anything, let me know! i'd love to add to this or fix it if needed
Names:
重剑大荒 - zhòng jiàn dà huāng - Dahuang (kexingzishu) - (the Heavy Sword of) Great Famine (chichi) - Great Desolation (xuxunette)
古刃龙背 - gǔ rèn lóng bèi - Guren Longbei (kexingzishu) - (the Ancient Blade of the) Dragon’s Back (chichi)
灵剑无名 - líng jiàn wú míng - (the Spiritual) Sword of No Name (chichi)
白衣 - bái yī - Baiyi (sparklingwater and chichi) - White Clothes (xuxunette)
Timelines:
Great Famine
the first famous sword rong changqing creates
rong changqing trades the sword to a wandering beggar in exchange for a cultivation manual (partial Liuhe Xinfa/Six Harmonies cultivation) and some wine
??? [originally i thought maybe yby had given it to a previous da wu since he seemed to know one when he went off to get help for zzs, but then i rediscovered the beggar story and had to scrap that idea]
supposedly, jing beiyuan's "subordinates" give it to him [i don't believe anything jby says when he's being cryptic, as a matter of principle]
jing beiyuan gives it to zhang chengling
Dragon's Back
rong changqing creates the sword
ye baiyi ends up with it [did rcq just give ALL his swords to yby????]
ye baiyi gives it to rong xuan
rong xuan is buried with it, or at least dies with it
ye baiyi retrieves it along with the remains of rong xuan and long fenger. he seems to intend to keep the sword with him
Nameless Sword/Baiyi
rong changqing creates the sword
it ends up with ye baiyi at least temporarily [VERY unclear to me whether this literally means he just has it for a hot second and then gives it to qhz or whether he actually wields it for a while]
ye baiyi gives it to qin huaizhang
qin huaizhang gives it to zhou zishu [my extremely unfounded headcanon is that ye baiyi gives the sword to qin huaizhang as payment/reward for looking for rong xuan]
Descriptions:
Great Famine
It was a sword of black iron [...] That sword was extraordinarily wide, even twice the width of Cao Weining’s. There was no glint to be seen, but it had an ancient, primitive air to it. Shining with a dull light, the blade was mantled with the dense miasma of carnage. When held in the hand, it had a solid, abundant heft, and was about two to three times heavier than an ordinary sword. There were two words carved along the fuller: Great Famine. - Chapter 67, wenbuxing
Cao Weining: "The Heavy Sword of Great Famine is a general amongst swords, solid and unsullied, unequaled in bravery and ferocity." - Chapter 71, chichi
the treasured sword, its jewels coated in dust - Chapter 71, chichi
Dragon's Back
the sword on Ye Baiyi’s back. It was unclear where the man had gotten it from; if it was not carefully examined, one would almost think that he was carrying a giant anti-cavalry sabre, as it was extremely wide and long. From his broad shoulders, a slanted head and a tail were revealed, as a life-like dragon had been engraved into the hilt and scabbard, its back arching like it was about to fly off into the rolling cloud cover at any moment. Merely by looking at it, one could feel its ferocious air of wanting to move, which seemed to stretch over all the way from the end of the sky. - Chapter 71, chichi
Cao Weining: "Neither of them [the nameless sword and Great Famine] can compare to the Ancient Blade of the Dragon’s Back, though. It’s a soldier of great viciousness, said to be cast from divine iron, where not even divinities can withstand it…" - Chapter 71, chichi
Nameless Sword/Baiyi
That was when Zhou Zishu was reminded that there were the words “Baiyi” carved on his sword. He once thought it was some kind of mysterious motto, but turned out it was this man’s name. His face turned sullen and he felt incredibly uncomfortable; involuntarily, he reached down his waist and felt around a bit before pulling out an impressive whip sword. - Chapter 28, sparklingwater
Cao Weining: "The Spiritual Sword of No Name, despite having no sword inscription, is a celebrity amongst swords, extraordinarily bright and unmatched in the world." - Chapter 71, chichi
Other Facts:
cao weining recognizes Dragon's Back and recites information about the other two swords from memory. wu xi also recognizes Dragon's Back.
rong changqing's moniker of "ghost hand" comes from Great Famine (it's unclear to me whether it's about forging it or using it or giving it away or something i've missed).
zhou zishu does not recognize that Baiyi is the famous Nameless Sword, and at the end of the book, ye baiyi thinks he still doesn't know.
cao weining doesn't know that Baiyi now has a name. also, it's unclear exactly who named Baiyi (whether it was named such while ye baiyi was using it, if he ever did, or if qin huaizhang named it such in his honor).
cao weining hilariously freaks out when he realizes that not only is zhang chengling carrying around Great Famine, he's wrapped it in old rags to make it less conspicuous.

for the character-centric stories prompts, Ye Baiyi and "What would happen to a houseplant in their care?" ♥
“She’s not going to kill you if they don’t all survive,” Rong Changqing had told Ye Baiyi after Rong-furen had finally stopped with her instructions, repeated instructions, and even more admonitions.
“Not so sure,” Ye Baiyi said, trying to commit to memory what the little yellow orchids needed. They wanted little water, right, but regularly, and they could never be allowed to remain standing in a puddle?
Compared to the orchids, the large pot of silvergrass was simple. The kitchen herbs were even simpler -- give them two ladles of water whenever they started looking a bit wan.
“Don’t think about the damn plants,” Rong Changqing assured him, “the main thing is you keep training Xuan-er and make sure he goes to bed before midnight. And don’t let him tinker in my workshop by himself. At least not after midnight. Please? Baiyi?”
If Changqing looked at him like that, with his beautiful smile and beautiful eyes, what else could Ye Baiyi do but grumble “I’ll try to” ungraciously, rather than smile back and reflect the things that Changqing made him feel. Every. Single. Time.
You’d think he would be used to it by now. For the Heavens’ sake, Xuan-er was already nine; the pain in those feelings should have worn down, become dulled and familiar. Perhaps it was the immortality that Rong Changqing had so unwisely cultivated and then dumped on Ye Baiyi; not only Ye Baiyi’s body, even his feelings were preserved forever unchanging in a block of clear ice.
“Don’t look so crestfallen, Baiyi,” Rong Changqing said. “It’s not even a month; we just have to be at the wedding of my lady’s youngest brother. We’ll hurry back as fast as we can. And Xuan-er can help you. If you’re really scared of what she’ll do to you if her chives have turned into hay, or the forge cats have peed on the basil.”
“I’m not scared,” Ye Baiyi grumbled. “I’m just offended that you wouldn’t even trust me with a fucking potted houseplant. I can feed the forge cats all right, and make sure that Xuan-er eats every day and sets nothing on fire. So why should I kill the damn orchids?”
“The forge cats,” Rong Changqing laughed, “will complain very loudly if you don’t feed them every day. Plants, however, just wilt quietly, and before you realize it, they’re dead.”
“Speak for yourself,” Ye Baiyi said, glaring up at Changqing, “I know what qi feels like, and I won’t let it falter.”
“Course you do,” Rong Changqing said, easily, but Ye Baiyi felt he still didn’t believe him. He made a face.
***
Two lunar months later, the Rongs returned, with a lot of gifts and good food for Xuan-er, and a few books they had thought Ye Baiyi might like, as well as a few bottles of syrup for him to flavor his snow with.
Xuan-er had built a box that would shoot crossbow bolts without the crossbow, steadily feeding them into the mechanism; he proudly presented it to his father, and they took quite a while to take it apart and then improve it so it would shoot even faster.
Baiyi went and had some snow with pomegranate syrup; it wasn’t bad, really. He perched on a rock and looked into the valley where he hadn’t been for so long, except in especially fierce winters, and then only for a little bit.
He didn’t know how he felt about Changqing and Rong-furen being back. Life with Xuan-er had been fun; they had trained every day, there had been no set bedtimes or mealtimes for either of them, and they had just ambled through their days in the snow. Xuan-er’s martial arts had taken leaps and bounds with nobody to interrupt him. He did look a little unkempt now, but really, all those hot baths were overrated, especially for a nine year old.
It was already getting dark when Rong-furen came out to get her husband and son from the workshop; the fire was going, and she had been cooking dinner.
“What have you done to my plants?” she asked, casually, as she passed Ye Baiyi.
“Nothing,” he said, “except what you’d told me. The forge cats were much harder to take care of; the calico brought out her kittens, and we kept running after them. Xuan-er shot at an eagle who tried to grab one. They’re all doing fine.”
“Don’t deflect,” Rong-furen said. “My plants have never been this lush and healthy. You have made cuttings from the orchids, and the roots are coming on fine; the basil is almost a tree now, and the other herbs fairly burst from their window boxes. I have noticed the kittens because they were playing hide-and-seek in the silvergrass and jumping up to catch the fronds. The lotuses in their basin and the peonies in their container are already flowering even though it’s early for them, this far up. You turned out to be an excellent gardener.”
“I just did what you told me,” Ye Baiyi said. “I checked every day, and made sure the forge cats didn’t pee on them. That’s all.”
He may have been feeding the plants a little of his qi, but hey, he was an immortal, he had the stuff to spare.
“Do you want to carry on doing it?” she asked. “I have seen the way you repotted the little blue orchids; there was so much care and attention in the work. You enjoyed it, didn’t you?”
“Nah,” Baiyi said, “they’re your plants. I just didn’t want to be the one who killed them. Changqing -- well, he thought I’d screw up, so I wanted to show him I don’t. I’m no good at this, and the plants don’t really like me. I’m the last person you want as a gardener, really.”
“If you change your mind -- any time,” she shrugged, and went about her errand.
Changqing and Xuan-er emerged from the forge even before she had reached the door; they were holding out the kittens and talking enthusiastically while they walked back towards the house and their dinner.
“Good job, Baiyi,” Changqing said vaguely as he passed Ye Baiyi on his perch; he reached up to clap him on the upper arm, then went inside with his family, plants and Baiyi already forgotten.-
