Romy – Webster Hall – December 7, 2023
While she’s perhaps best known for her work as a guitarist and vocalist in the XX — and for writing songs for the likes of Dua Lipa — Romy Madley Croft has also been doing her own thing as a solo artist under the name Romy. Her first studio long-player, Mid Air, arrived this past September. “It’s a nostalgic but box-fresh dance album that taps into a deep well of feeling,” raves NME. “It’s the work of an artist with a sincere appreciation for dance music and the skills to make her own galvanizing bangers.” And last night the English singer-songwriter exuberantly closed out her American tour with a dance party at a sold-out Webster Hall.

Liste: Elf gute Musikvideos aus 2022
Ach, Leute: Soll ich jetzt die Person sein, die den Musikvideojournalismus aufrecht hält? Stereogum ist eingeknickt, Pitchfork ist (im Großen und Ganzen) eingeknickt, Allgood auch, nur Bierschinken hält durch (okay, vielleicht ist die Auswahl auch bisschen idiosynkratisch, aber - naja). Jedenfalls: Ja, es hat nach dem kurzen YouTube-Revival etwas antiquiertes, dieses Format zwischen all den Musik-Illustrations-Optionen hochzuhalten, aber andererseits sind wir - neben allen persönlichen Sozialisations- und Mediennutzungsgründen - doch seit Jahren gut darin geschult, uns nicht nur zwischen verschiedenen Formaten (Stream, Album, Single, LP, Kassette, CD, EP, Liveset, Playlist ...) zu bewegen, sondern sie auch jeweils zu schätzen. Und nichts anderes sollen Listen wie diese ja leisten. Daher also nun, in gebotener Kürze: elf Videos, die ich 2022 auf Wegen sah und mochte.
Björk/Ancestress
Generell guter Zyklus, hier mit Maske und Ritus und allem, am Rande zur Videoinstallation, und damit hat man mich ja schon fast automatisch in der Tasche.
Imperial Triumphant/Merkurius Gilded
Wir kippen nach hinten, während der Song nach vorne treibt und in gespenstischer Zeitlupe ein Dekadenzpanorama freigibt.
Joji/Glimpse Of Us
Was genau passiert da eigentlich in “Glimpse Of Us”? Joji knüpft mal wieder sehr lose Verbindungen in der Text-Bild-Schere, durch die wir in schnellen Schnitten hetzen. Ist das jetzt Incel-Bagatelisierung oder Empathie für verletzliche Männlichkeit? Vielleicht ein Think Piece, in jedem Fall Spektakel, dem man das Stilbewusstsein dieses wirren Kreativen anmerkt - und das den Schmalz des Songs gnadenlos erhitzt, um ihn uns lauwarm um die Wangen zu schmieren.
Kendrick Lamar/The Heart Pt. 5
Gutes, diskursgesättigtes, auch ästhetisch aufregendes Edgelord-Video zu einem durchaus auch am Konflikt interessierten Album, mit Betonung auf gut.

Wackliges Leiden in GIF-Logik.
Tate McCrae/She’s All I Wanna Be
Neid in der Liebe, hier interpretiert als Neid auf der Bühne, bzw. im Tanz, also dort, wo McCrae tendenziell brilliert - mit gut gagigem Finale.
Paramore/The News
Hätte mir wer die Idee gepitcht, hätte ich vielleicht eine dritte Person vorgeschlagen. Aber allein für die leeräugige Hailey Williams in Kapuzenpulli, auf den Bildschirm starrend, eingefangen von einer körperlos durch den Raum kippenden Kamera wäre ich zu jedem Kompromiss bereit gewesen.
Maggie Rogers/Want Want
Auch vor meinem ersten Karaoke-Besuch fühlte ich diesen Vibe, der zur Industrial-Pastiche an der VHS-Kassette spulte.
Romy/Strong
Via Blinklicht ausgeleuchtete Intimität, locker-euphorisch gedreht.
Rosalia/Saoko
Wir stolpern über die Brücke und in unserer Mitte steht ein Star.
Sam Smith feat. Kim Petras/Unholy
Sam Smith als Zeremonienmeister, alles bisschen zu groß und beherzt aufs Klischee gedacht, aber meine Güte - gerade deswegen ja auch einfach toll.

We have to admit the 10's might have been the strangest times for rockers to work, yet all the genres struggled back thanks to the massive restructuring of, well, everything, I guess. However, some succeeded immensely, though I would claim they fitted more in these times. For instance, the xx may have debuted in the late noughts, but they did find themselves much more attuned to the zeitgeist during the 10's. Nonetheless, Coexist, their entry for the period, belongs to a category of albums some didn't know how to perceive, i.e. I recall there were a couple expressions of disappointment over the disc despite the critical acclaim. Eventually, the LP became more cherished as the scene changed. They ended up being the progenitors of the path the consequent popular music took.

The xx singer-guitarist Romy Madley Croft put out her first solo album, the exuberant, dance-pop-filled Mid Air, late last summer. And on Friday night in Queens, she had everyone dancing into the weekend at Knockdown Center.
