xavier grew up in what he thought was a stable home in houston, texas. that was until shortly after his fourteenth birthday his mother addie came out as a lesbian in her forties which effectively ended her marriage to his father, darren. his father’s departure from the home and his parents subsequent divorce weighed heavily on him, and kickstarted a five year long spiral that culminated in a cocaine overdose at the age of 19.
what followed was his first rehab stint, and a six month period of consecutive sobriety which ended in a weekend in LA that he still can’t recall the full details of.
most of his 20′s was spent falling on and off the wagon, but he’s been sober since his 30th birthday and is determined to make it stick this time.
regular attendee of AA meetings, but isn’t the most forthcoming about that. or anything.
he started playing guitar after his father bought him one for his 10th birthday, and it remains the one consistent hobby he keeps that doesn’t double as a vice.
found himself in rockyview with the intention of staying for a month at most five years ago and has yet to actually pack it up and leave -- though he keeps saying he’s going to.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION:
Riley never got to experience the feeling of growing up in a normal familial setting. Their mother had them at the age of sixteen and simply did not have the funds or ability to raise them. Their biological father was listed as ‘unknown’. Fortunately for them, their mother had an older half-sister that had expressed interest in adopting them at birth.
Despite being raised as one of their own children, Riley’s aunt and uncle never hid the fact that they were adopted. They claimed that it was so that Riley never wondered why they didn’t ‘quite fit in’ with their adopted siblings. In truth, this made them feel more alienated. To make matters worse, they had to see their biological mother at family functions - a woman that they simply couldn’t connect with in any capacity.
Growing up, Riley was the ‘edgy/alternative’ kid (as their family labeled them). They were heavily into punk/pop-punk, spent most of their time at the local skate park on their skateboard, and was generally moody. They were also a very artistic teen, pouring a lot of their time into drawing, writing, and playing guitar.
Their aunt bought them their first camera for their fourteenth birthday and from then on, they were hooked. All of their free time was spent on taking pictures. They could be landscape photography of the Brooklyn atmosphere, or silly photoshoots they put together of their friends.
When they finally got a part time job at the age of sixteen, they began saving their money to buy a professional grade camera. They knew from a young age that they would be doing this for the rest of their life. So much so that at the age of seventeen, they dropped out of high school to pursue photography full-time. While their aunt and uncle vehemently disagreed with their decision, they supported them until they could get on their feet.
It took around 12-18 months for them to build up enough clientele to do photography full-time, but it was so beyond worth the struggle.
At the age of twenty, they met a girl that they fell head-over-heels in love with. A person that became their muse and their everything. She convinced Riley to move with her to a small Rhode Island town, and Riley never even questioned it.
They were happy together for a year or two before the relationship fell apart. Riley does not resent her at all, and still cares for her deeply. Despite this, they still feel a little hurt in their heart over the situation. Something that can be seen in their photography.
Now at the age of twenty-eight, Riley runs a very successful freelance photography business out of their home. They photograph everything from weddings to senior pictures and all shoots in between.

BACKGROUND:
jack o’riley grew up in small, boring greenville in rhode island. i suppose it had its charm. the only charm jack found in it was the time he spent with his mother, ruby – he had such a special relationship with her, and that was mostly because he felt as if he had no relationship with his father, benji. however, benji was deeply in love with ruby. it just felt like he couldn’t care less, whether they had jack or not. his father’s focus was on his mother and his mother only, which bothered jack a little – but the relationship he had with his mother made up for it. jack grew up with an affinity for music, being interested in many classic rock and folks artists – jeff buckley being the one to take the crown, as he was also his mother’s favorite. and so, when jack turned 11, ruby bought him his very first guitar on his birthday. it was jack’s favorite thing in the world, and he picked up the skill quite easily. benji was not that big of a fan – he didn’t quite believe in jack as his mother did.
TW: MENTION OF DEATH & DISEASE // when jack turned 13, his mother was diagnosed with a fatal disease that she had when she was younger. she was lucky to get rid of it before it got too bad before, but when she and benji were trying for a baby, their doctor warned them that the stresses of labor and pregnancy would make her vulnerable to the disease again – but she went through with it, anyway, and benji was terrified of losing his wife. however, things went smoothly, and jack’s 13 years of life and ruby’s health made them think they were in the clear. but it reappeared, and this time much more aggressive than before. the solution was an operation – the only issue is that it was too expensive for what they were making. benji wanted to use jack’s college fund that ruby began to save up ever since she discovered she was pregnant – but she refused, saying that it was for jack. had he not overheard the countless nights of them arguing about it, thinking they were being quiet, jack would have never known it was an issue. eventually, benji caved because even if he went against her wishes, he knew he’d have ruby hating him forever for taking away jack’s college money. and without the operation she needed, ruby passed away - on jack’s 14th birthday.
TW: NEGLECT AND ABUSE, DRUG ABUSE // his mother’s death took a toll on him – but it took an even bigger toll on his father. benji would begin to drink more and more… and eventually, he started to get into all kinds of different substances. not a day went by when jack didn’t witness his father drunk, or high. benji wouldn’t speak to jack at all – he wouldn’t give him food, he wouldn’t buy him things he needed, he wouldn’t give him money at all…. just complete neglect. and when he did speak to him, it was to tell him how much he hated him, how worthless he was, and that he was the reason ruby was dead now. at some point, benji had gotten so high and so angry at jack’s existence, that he grabbed the guitar his mother bought for him and smashed it, claiming it had ruby all over it. his college fund wasn’t even worth saving – benji ended up blowing through it to feed his own addictions of drugs and alcohol. it was lucky that jack was more resilient than other kids around him, otherwise he wouldn’t have made it out alive.
it wasn’t until he met a 19 year old kid who was staying his town for a bit when he was 17, that he began to think about seriously leaving. the thought crossed his mind, but he always thought that he’d be worse off out there on his own – too scared to try and make it on his own. it was this guy who saw what he was really going through at home, and pushed him to get up, pack his shit, and leave. he meant a lot to him – he meant so much to him, that it was then that jack began to realize that he might not be straight. but with the age gap and logan not staying in town much, there was never hope for them -- it was an unrequited crush for the older kid. so jack kept it to himself. with this push, though, he took all the money he’d saved up from the two part-time jobs he had to provide for himself since he clearly didn’t have a choice with his neglectful father, and left early one morning with his dad still passed out from the drinks of the night before – not a single note left behind, not a word to benji. just a backpack with essentials, his money, and he made it to rocky view.
there, he he had a really rough start – he couldn’t find a proper place to live, and he had to work extra hard and multiple jobs just to keep himself from starving. the only happy place and the only thing that made him feel any positive emotion was a place called riptide rhythm. jack would spend all of his free time there, browsing through music he’d browsed through hundreds of times before, listening to the music. the owner was kind enough to let him stay as long as he wanted – in fact, he was kind enough to offer jack a job there, and took care of him plenty; he’d taken him in and jack couldn’t be more grateful. they had gotten so close in just a few years. jack had no one else, at that time – all they really had were each other. he’d done more for jack, than benji ever did, and became a father figure that he lacked in his entire childhood. when jack turned 26, the owner he’d gotten so close to had passed away. this devastated jack, and he felt like he was truly alone again. in his will, since he had no other family, he’d left the store in jack’s name.
PERSONALITY/HEADCANONS:
on the exterior, jack seems aloof, cold, and blunt – unapproachable at times, and some would say he was pretty mean but that was just him being honest. all that really was were walls being built on top of each other over the years. his trust in others was so minimal, it was so rare that he was shown any sort of kindness from anyone other than louis (store owner before him). so – trust issues, on top of daddy issues, on top of communication issues.
speaking of communication issues, the only way he truly knows how to communicate with others is through sex. so. big on the sleeping around thing. another thing about that, is that he enjoys knowing he was the reason for other people’s pleasures – it rly feeds his big ass ego and makes him feel in control
big music boi. he loves to have music on 24/7 and he’s always playing songs on his guitar or writing his own music in his lil book – it keeps his mind from running, and jack can’t be alone with his thoughts for too long. that’s also why he drowns himself in work, and is probably always at the record store.
he’s a big reader, too. he built himself a huge bookshelf and has a lot of hand me down books that he collected over the years.
he has two guitars - one electric, one acoustic. he spent a lot of money on those, which was a splurge, considering they were bought before he owned the store himself.
he may be cold and guarded, but he can really let loose and carry a conversation sometimes – while he prefers to be alone and isolated half the time, there’s a part of him that really enjoys being in rowdy crowds, like pubs or little concerts. part of it was because of the music and the atmosphere, and another part of it was because while he wasn’t the biggest fan of interacting with people, he was a fan of people in general – more specifically, he admires the things that come from people’s minds: music, architecture, culture, art, poetry… he enjoyed it all (big boner for artsy people).

BACKGROUND:
Valentina has always been a little princess - at least in her parents’ eyes. The two were originally from NYC before they relocated to Rocky View when Valentina’s mother found out she was pregnant. They had wanted their child to be born away from the hustle and bustle of the city and experience life from a small town.
Growing up, Valentina had everything she ever wanted. Her father was a wealthy businessman and her mother was an event planner. She was their only child and therefore, constantly showered with love, presents, and extremely high expectations.
From a young age, Valentina pushed herself to go as far as she could, to work harder and harder just to please her parents. And it worked for a while. She was homecoming queen once or twice, prom queen, she was in the top ten of her classes. She was one of the best players on the girls’ soccer team. Everything Valentina put her mind to, she succeeded in.
As tired as she was, she decided to put her attention and focus on something that would actually matter - nursing school. She knew she had the drive and the intelligence, and so she went for it. She went to school, buckled down, and earned her BSN. Nearly as soon as she passed her boards, she was hired at the local medical facility.
A few years later, the cracks were beginning to show beneath the surface. Valentina was exhausted. She had spent so much of her life pleasing everyone else that she hadn’t stopped to relax. The Rocky View darling began to party more, hang around ‘less savory’ people. With an emotional outlet in the form of drinking and dating, she found herself a little more relaxed.
Around the age of thirty, she had met someone that she really enjoyed spending time with. Her heart told her that this man came into her life for a reason, though she was expecting them to get married. Little did she know, she’d soon become pregnant with their son, Leo. The relationship fizzled out shortly after he was born, but she still cares deeply about his father.
Adjusting to life as a single mother has been tough for Valentina, but she knows that her parents and community supports her. The only place she came go is up from there.

max’s parents moved around a lot, settling into town when she was three. her parents were loving, though very guarded people. one day when she was eight, they just never picked her up from school and when no relatives came to claim her, she went into the system.
she bounced around foster homes for a few years, no home was quite right until she was adopted by the stuart family. it was an adjustment at first, she wasn’t use to having siblings and her time in foster care left her guarded and counting the days until the stuarts would eventually tire of her and send her back. that day never came.
years later max has grown into a level headed yet somewhat chaotic adult. she’s the kind of person that you can tell anything to not because she’s a good listener but she’s too nice and awkward to tell you to stop talking. she can tell you everything about a certain book but if you ask her how’s she doing * cue windows shut down noise*.
max likes her tiny quiet existence, her apartment is 99.9 % books and if she could somehow get away not having a bed to fill the space for more books she would. she’s never really had big dreams or aspirations, as long as she’s close to her family, she’s all set.
though quite sweet and protective of her friends and family, max has the emotional range of a teaspoon. the idea of being emotional available is a completely foreign concept to her, 40% of that is due to her belief that fictional people are easier to deal with and 60% from the idea she still harbors from childhood that everyone will eventually tire of her so what’s the point.
