Operation Idiots
For @like-the-first-time-i-kissed-you AO3 Link
There was pink and red everywhere. Robert looked in the village. David's shop was the worst offender, and he felt blinded by it all. The pink cards, the pink flowers, pink colored crisp packages and even the beer cans in the refrigerators seemed to not have been saved from the Valentine's take over. He shook his head and wondered vaguely if Valentine's Day as a holiday had taken over the world while he was in prison? He frowned at the flower display and tried to push the holiday out of his mind, or rather the person it made him think about.
He'd told Vic he'd do the shopping -- needing to give her something back for letting him say with her until he figured out a flat for himself. It was hard going because he wanted to be in Emmerdale. He needed to stay close to his family. He'd missed them more deeply than he expected to while he was in prison and being home. It felt amazing to back in his sister's life, to know his nephew — even Diane wasn't annoying him to often. He supposed eventually that might fade, but he missed her.
Robert needed them. All of them. But most of aller he needed Seb. The thought of him made all the Valentine's decoration fade away. He felt a rush of happiness that made him feel like he was buzzing from the inside. Seb was spectacular. He was perfect. He was too old, twelve, and Robert lost far too much time. But they were getting along, somehow, his son didn't hate him for leaving him — it'd been his worst nightmare over the years. But after a few hard questions, Seb had hugged him and cried and told him he was happy Robert was home.
He wasn't sure if his homecoming would've gone so easily if Seb hadn't accepted him, but he did, so Robert pushed down the what-ifs and found it easier to ignore all the cheery pink around him. He smiled at the thought of his son and how amazing he was —
But the real reason for that popped up in his mind, and he saw himself looking at a card that was taped to the wall as decoration. To My Husband on its cover and he frowned.
Aaron.

Fanfic writer appreciation
Today we would like to send the fanfiction writer shoutout to sugdenlovesdingle. Over their time in the fandom, they have written 93 fics on their AO3 page. These include Aaron week, Robert week, anniversary, Valentine’s, Christmas and many more exchanges. They really enjoy writing canon divergence and what if fics. THeir fics range from all genres and leave a happy feeling when we are done reading them. Thanks so much for taking your time to write out these fics. Down below are some of our favourite fics of theirs.

For the fic writers ask.... 4,9,15,20,28
How many fic ideas are you nurturing right now? Care to share one of them?
so so many. I want to do one based on a meme I saw where a person texts someone to pick them up because they were too drunk to drive, they later text them never mind I'm home, and the person is like yes I drove you.
Which fic has been the hardest to write?
The one I am currently writing for valentine exchange.
If you could choose one of your fics to be filmed, which would you choose?
Since I can't see any of my mpreg making it and being filmed, maybe my uni AU.
Describe your perfect writing conditions.
Having the energy to write, no brain fo, or headache, and maybe some light background noise.
Share three of your favorite fic writers and why you like them so much.
@sugdeninabeanie. I just love the worlds she creates.
@littlelooneyluna the queen of AUs
@robron-til-the-end-of-time She just gets their voice so right.
sorry it took so long to answer these

Here’s my post for Robron fandom appreciation week and it’s for the ever wonderful @letthebluerain I’ve smiled a lot while checking out your blog because you really are hilarious - your dry sense of humour and sarcasm is completely on my wave-length. I have to admit that I’m ashamed of myself because I’m the sneaky anon who asked you for your favourite Robron scenes and made you answer that terrible question! But based on that response, and your absolute adoration of the Valentine’s episode, I wrote a little ficlet for you. I hope you enjoy and have a fabulous day.
***
What Do I Do When I Am So In Love With You?
That spark was still there. Of course it was. It wasn’t like Robert had changed. It wasn’t like either of them had changed that much...found better ways of being themselves and coping, definitely; become friends, kind of; moved on, maybe.
But it was funny how it was Valentine’s and Aaron had spent the day preparing to make things up to Alex and prove how much he cared about him and yet, here he was sitting staring at Robert busying himself in their - no his - kitchen, like he’d never left. And it was partly Robert’s doing because he’d offered, and partly Aaron’s because he didn’t want him to leave.
There had been a few moments between them. Moments that made Aaron feel like they were exactly where they belonged. Moments that felt too close to flirting, but he couldn’t bring himself to care. Moments when he felt a little awkward suddenly, like he didn’t know where to look or quite what to say. But being in Robert’s company, feeling so relaxed and content around him, made him yearn for something that was supposed to be forgotten about.
When the conversation moved onto Liv, and Robert immediately became self-deprecating, laughing it off like it didn’t hurt him to think that she hated him, Aaron couldn’t help but point out that Liv missed him. And it just seemed to tumble out of his mouth that he missed Robert too and for a moment he stumbled. He shouldn’t have admitted it; he shouldn’t have said it out loud. But god, it was true. There hadn’t been anything he’d felt more deeply in his bones for a long time: he missed Robert - so much. He should’ve stopped talking - it would’ve been easier than tripping over himself trying to tell Robert that it was just about his maths skills, but he panicked. And Robert admitting ‘I miss her too’ felt a lot like a kick in the gut because Robert felt the same.
The text from Alex was like some sort of sign. And it showed a lot about how much Robert had become a better person when he didn’t make some snarky comment about the situation. It felt like the most natural thing in the world to suggest that Robert stayed to eat with him. He wanted him to, more than anything. How could something as simple as watching Robert at work in the kitchen make him so desperate to never let him leave again?
Nerves fluttered through him.
“So, does that mean you’re staying?” he asked, looking up at Robert through his eyelashes slightly and hoping he’d say yes. The moment of hesitation from Robert made Aaron’s stomach turn and then his heart skip when Robert agreed.
“Uh, yeah, ok, thanks.”
He tried not to let his smile become too obvious, too pleased by Robert’s acceptance, but he wasn’t sure if he managed it. Instead, he ducked past Robert to grab some plates and calm his racing heart.
***
Sitting on the sofa, within touching distance, after they’d enjoyed their meal, Aaron couldn’t help but watch Robert closely. He looked tired, but still as gorgeous as ever. When he yawned, Aaron couldn’t help but miss seeing that every morning. Waking up to Robert stretching and yawning in the morning sunshine, lying on their bed rubbing his hand over his face and turning to smile at Aaron as he blinked awake...just another thing he missed.
It had been his decision. He was the one who’d moved on with someone else. But maybe he was never going to move on - not really. Not when just sitting beside Robert had such an effect on him.
And then Robert started talking - like he was finally having the chance to get some of what he’d been carrying around off his chest because Aaron was the only person he could truly be himself around - and Aaron’s heart hurt for him. For the situation he’d found himself in and the way he was so quick to blame himself for everything.
At Robert’s choked ‘sorry’, Aaron couldn’t stop himself from sliding closer, reaching out to comfort Robert. Because he couldn’t just sit there and let Robert suffer on his own. Something inside him was drawing him to Robert, always pulling him closer, like they were magnets. He wrapped his arm around his shoulders and tried to make Robert see what he could see - what he felt.
“Robert, you’re doing a great job - I’m proud of you.” And he really meant it. There was so much more he could’ve said, so many other reassurances he could give, but Robert finally glanced up at him and suddenly talking was the last thing on his mind.
His hand rubbed across Robert’s shoulder, squeezing in reassurance and then maybe something more. Maybe he wanted to draw Robert closer with that hand on his shoulder. Again he felt himself drawn to Robert, like he couldn’t fight the pull between them any longer: he didn’t want to. He could thread his fingers into the hair at the back of Robert’s head; just how he always used to; just how Robert loved it, the way that always made him groan and surge forwards more desperately. He could do it: he wanted to.
Leaning forward, he watched Robert’s face closely and saw the same feelings reflected back at him. Robert was there and everything Aaron wanted.
They both moved towards one another and then the harsh buzz of the flat doorbell broke them apart.
Aaron pulled his hand away from the warmth of Robert’s neck, clearing his throat and rubbing at his chest, trying to calm his racing heart and his racing mind. They’d nearly kissed: they would’ve done if not for the interruption - of that, he was sure.
“That’ll be...Liv,” he stumbled over what he was trying to say. “She never takes her keys...I should, um, yeah.”
He pushed himself up from the sofa and away from Robert. He needed to put some space between them - he didn’t know what would happen if he didn’t. Except that was a lie he was telling himself. Of course he knew because it was what he wanted.
Not looking back, but blowing out a heavy sigh as he moved, he quickly went to the door, pulling it open and drawing in a deep breath in surprise at who was on the other side.
“Alex!” he gasped out.
As they exchanged pleasantries, Aaron was internally cursing. They were going to head into the flat and Robert was going to be there on the sofa and Alex was going to absolutely flip at the knowledge that Aaron had spent Valentine’s evening with his ex-husband, who he already had issues with.
As they wandered back towards the flat, and Aaron pushed the door open to let Alex in, he took another deep breath. For a moment, part of him (quite a large part) didn’t care about what Alex was going to say or do. He almost wanted them to walk in and find Robert sitting comfortably on the sofa, waiting for Aaron. And he almost wanted Alex to storm out in a rage because then Aaron would be free to be with Robert. But when they walked into the living room, Robert was nowhere to be found and Aaron’s heart simultaneously sank and started pounding in his chest again. Because he wasn’t sure if he’d really been ready to face whatever would have kicked off if Robert had still been sitting there and now he’d never know. The moment was gone.
“Good surprise?” Alex asked brightly as he slipped by Aaron into the flat.
Aaron paused for a moment, his eyes scanning the now Robertless living room.
“The best,” he forced out, wondering if the lie was as obvious as it sounded in his own head.
As Alex pottered about in the kitchen, Aaron’s eyes searched the room and glanced towards the stairs. Surely Robert wouldn’t have gone up there. That would look even worse if Alex happened to find him. He shook his head slightly in bewilderment and followed Alex into the kitchen.
Not much of what Alex said made it through the thoughts of Robert that had flooded Aaron’s mind. He was vaguely aware of him going on about his shift and he knew some response was needed but trying to pull himself together after what had happened - what had nearly happened - was too hard.
“I know Robert’s only your mate now,” Alex said, and Aaron had to move his eyes away from the earnest expression on his face. Alex was trying to apologise for ‘overreacting’ about Robert but if he hadn’t turned up, there would’ve actually been a reason for him to be so pissed off.
It was too close to home. “Just forget about it,” he found himself saying.
And then Liv was there and not looking too happy, and Aaron just needed a minute to think. He stumbled over an excuse to get rid of Alex and then he was finally alone.
Looking up the stairs, and waiting for the front door to click shut behind Alex, he immediately grabbed his phone and didn’t hesitate before pressing Robert’s name.
He took a deep breath and exhaled it shakily as he waited for the call to be answered.
“Hello?” Robert said, sounding a little confused.
And Aaron froze. He sucked in another deep breath, could feel his heart rate rising.
What did he want to say?
‘Come back.’
‘Stay.’
‘Don’t ever leave again.’
He couldn’t say any of that - as much as the words were on the tip of his tongue and his heart was pounding in his chest at the thought of actually saying them out loud.
He nearly spoke. He nearly begged Robert to come back to him.
“Aaron?” Robert asked, concern in his tone.
And Aaron exhaled shakily again. He had to say something but he couldn’t force the words out that he really wanted to say.
“Pocket dial...sorry,” he said bluntly, closing his eyes as he lied again that evening.
There was silence at the other end of the call and then the line went dead. He threw his phone onto the sofa and rubbed his face in frustration.
What was he thinking? But he didn’t really need to ask himself that question. He knew what he was thinking. He knew what he wanted. He’d spent so long telling himself that he’d moved on but in reality his feelings hadn’t changed at all.
He knew one thing for sure: he had a decision to make.

Hello!! It’s your secret valentine here, I hope you have a great weekend! I just wanted to know, what is your favourite robron era? Favourite scenes? Favourite quotes? Any specific gifsets you’ve ever wanted to see?? ❤️❤️❤️
My favorite era’s Husbands 2.0 followed very closely by Affair Era.
I am so bad at picking favorite scenes and things.  I do love it when the heart eyes on by a thousand and they just can’t help but look at each other. I like when their being husbands and talking about their family. Love Seb
You know, I know is a thing I love.
Hopefully this is helpful :)

Here’s my entry for the Robron Awards 2018. This was really hard. It took me days to decide in certain categories.
Best kiss
The reunion kiss. It was so desperate and clingy. It’s also the first kiss since forever.
Most underrated moment
10/11/2017 Aaron convincing Robert not to abandon Seb. Robert comes clean to Aaron about all of the terrible schemes. He was so ashamed of himself. Robert’s self-hatred and Aaron’s sadness. I mean, this is the scene when Aaron uttered those famous words “No one died.” But it’s also when Aaron told Robert that he imagined them having kids. Telling him that he needed to stay for them because if he ran away, then all that heartbreak was for nothing. 😭
That whole scene is so heartbreaking. It was hard on Aaron but he still managed to convince Robert to stay. Aaron saying “
Best hearteyes moment
Valentine’s day scene when Aaron is lost in Robert’s face while Robert is cooking a romantic dinner for Aaron and his ‘boyfriend’
Funniest scene
Robert’s amateur theatrics with the Hotten Police when he was giving Aaron an alibi. 3/01/18
Best I love you/sweetest moment
Post-proposal sofa scene (31/7/18
Most heartbreaking scene
“Because you left me. And I know you had to and I know I didn’t deserve you but you… you left me. And I lost my… I lost my husband, I lost my best friend and I lost my home and it’s too much.”
It sadly summed up Robert’s loss and what he’s gone through. I am so glad it was verbalized.
Best Robert quote
“I lost my husband, I lost my best friend and I lost my home, and it’s … it’s too much.”
this sums up what Robert lost and how no one actually noticed or acknowledged this for a whole year. Everyone treated him like crap. He did not get a single empathy. No wonder he went over the edge.
Best Aaron quote
His reunion speech. Nothing can ever top that. But especially “ “You loved me like nobody ever has before.” I die every time I hear this.
Best parallel
Robert calling Aaron idiot in proposal 1 and proposal 2. I love it when Robert calls Aaron an idiot. It’s so cute.
Best wordless scene
Robert takes his ring of (5/01/18)
Sassiest moment
“I hope my husband makes you very happy.”
Best sentimental scene/gesture
The ring and keys exchange the morning after the reunion.
Most rewatched scene
Christmas Goodbye/breakup scene. My heart breaks into million little pieces every time I watch it but still I go for more.
Best family moment
The scene when Doug and Diane are with Robert and they’re taking care of him. AT LAST ROBERT HAS A SUPPORT SYSTEM.
Maybe this is cheating since Doug is technically not a family but I love that scene so much and then Aaron and Liv arrive.
I also love the scene at the pub with Liv, Seb, and Robron just hanging out like a perfect little family.
Best scene that showed character/couple development
Robert & Aaron talking things through after Aaron lashing out at Robert (3/5/18)
They really talked and dealt with the issues instead of one of them storming out and then later pretending everything is fine.

I need you to do a list of top 10 robert and aaron moments. Please and thank you.
I WILL DO THIS BUT KNOW ANON
KNOW I CURSE YOUR NAME FOR PUTTING ME THROUGH THIS
ALSO I’M DEFINITELY FORGETTING THINGS SO IF EVERYONE ELSE WANTS TO CONTRIBUTE, I ENCOURAGE THAT
10. the valentine’s day “pocket dial”AKA TIME 2 DIE TIME 2 CRY FILLED WITH LOVE AND AARON JUST BEING A HAIR’S BREATH AWAY FROM SAYING FUCK IT AND GOING AFTER THE ONE THING HE WANTS. AND THE FACT THAT WE LATER FIND OUT THAT ROBERT KNOWS EXACTLY WHAT AARON’S DOING, BECAUSE HE KNOWS AARON SO WELL, BUT THEN DOESN’T PUSH IT IS SO AMAZING.
9. that scene in the hospital when seb’s bornCONTROVERSIAL BUT HERE WE ARE IT’S JUST SO SAD AND SO WONDERFUL AND YOU CAN JUST F E E L HOW MUCH THEY LOVE ONE ANOTHER - AND IT WAS THEIR FIRST SCENE TOGETHER IN A WHILE AND IT *FELT* LIKE IT - THEY WERE BOTH JUST SO SAD FOR THE LIFE THEY SHOULD HAVE HAD TOGETHER (and will have, but they don’t know that at this point) AND THEY SO VISIBLY MISS ONE ANOTHER AKSJSJSKS IT’S AMAZING AND BEAUTIFUL AND AARON THINKS ROBERT IS GONNA BE THE BEST DAD??? HE BELIEVES IN ROBERT SO MUCH.
8. #mbhwilAKA THE BEST THING ROBERT HAS EVER SAID TO AARON. IN CONTEXT IT’S SO MUCH MORE WONDERFUL TOO - IT’S ROB SAYING THAT WHEN HE SAW AARON ON SPICE IT WAS LIKE SEEING A STRANGER, IT WASN’T THE AARON ROBERT LOVES SO DESPERATELY AND HE SAYS THAT SENTIMENT IN THE MOST DRAMATIC AND INCREDIBLE WAY - MY BEAUTIFUL HUSBAND WHO I LOVE ISN’T THERE ANYMORE. LIKE…. ROBERT THINKS THAT WHO AARON IS IS BEAUTIFUL, AARON IS *HIS* BEAUTIFUL HUSBAND. god robert standardly acts like such a fucking maniac at the idea of aaron not being in his life, in whatever form that takes. god it’s so good.
7. robert’s face when he sees his dream aaron walk down the stairs in a suit LISTEN. IT’S ROBERT’S DREAM AND HIS DREAM VERSION OF AARON IS THE MOST DREAMY, SWOON WORTHY MAN BECAUSE THATS HOW ROBERT SEES AARON - AND EVEN IN HIS OWN DREAM, ROB LOOKS SO FUCKIN #SHOOK. HE JUST???? THIS HIS HUSBAND IS THE MOST BEAUTIFUL MAN INSIDE BUT ALSO THE MOST BEAUTIFUL MAN ON THE OUTSIDE???? THEY’RE SO IN LOVE.
6. “i’ll be the best friend you’ve ever had”THE WHOLE EXCHANGE AGREEING TO BE FRIENDS - BECAUSE THEY CAN’T NOT CARE ABOUT ONE ANOTHER, ONLY EVER WANT FOR THE OTHER TO BE AS HAPPY AS POSSIBLE - MAKES ME WANT TO FLOP DOWN ON THE FLOOR AND SOB. THEY CARE SO MUCH FOR EACH OTHER AND THE WAY THEY LOOK AT EACH OTHER IN THAT MOMENT SAYS…. SO SO SO MUCH.
5. on the bench after the weddingTHE ONE MOMENT AFTER THE WEDDING THAT THEY TAKE FOR THEMSELVES - AARON HAS TAKEN HIMSELF AWAY AND ROBERT HAS GONE TO FIND HIM. HE’S TIPSY AND HE’S JOKING AROUND A LITTLE AND THEN AARON LOOKS AT HIM AND LOOKS SO QUIETLY SAD AND ASKS IF THEY CAN JUST SIT THERE TOGETHER FOR A WHILE - BECAUSE AARON IS SAD AND WANTS A MOMENT TO HIMSELF BUT THAT WILL ALWAYS INCLUDE ROBERT BECAUSE THEY’RE MARRIED AND THEY’RE A TEAM AND WHATEVER THEY GO THROUGH THEY GO THROUGH TOGETHER - AND ROBERT!!! IMMEDIATELY DROPS HIS CUTESY LITTLE JOKEY ACT BECAUSE HE KNOWS, HE ALREADY KNOWS, THAT AARON IS SAD AND SCARED ABOUT GOING TO PRISON AND IT’S JUST. IT’S THE MOST WONDERFUL LITTLE MOMENT TO START OFF THEIR MARRIAGE. IT’S SAD BUT THEY’RE SO CLEARLY IN LOVE. AND THEY’RE SO WORRIED ABOUT BEING SEPARATED AND MISSING ONE ANOTHER. GOD.
4. that scene where they decide to have an affairLISTEN IF U REALLY KNOW ME THEN U KNOW THAT THIS SCENE IS MY FAVOURITE THING - IT LITERALLY HAPPENS RIGHT AFTER THE SECOND TIME THEY’VE HOOKED UP AND AARON HAS TRASHED ROBERT’S CAR AND THEY’RE LITERALLY ARGUING AND THREATENING EACH OTHER BUT ALSO THE WHOLE SCENE IS LITERALLY THE TWO OF THEM ACKNOWLEDGING THAT THEY ARE ABSOLUTELY NOT GONNA STOP BONING. THEY JUST DON’T EVEN SOUND LIKE THEY LIKE BEING IN THE SAME ROOM AS EACH OTHER BUT THEY’RE AGREEING THAT THEY’RE GOING TO JUST DIVE STRAIGHT INTO AN AFFAIR. THEY DON’T EVEN ASK ONE ANOTHER, IT’S JUST LIKE “YEP WELL THIS IS HAPPENING AGAIN SO?? BUT ALSO FUCK U???” IT’S SO ROBRON AND I LOVE IT.
3. the hospital proposalPEAK SOFT ROMANCE. THEY’RE SO IN LOVE AND THEY WANT TO SPEND THEY’RE LIVES TOGETHER AND THEY’RE FUCKED UP AND MAYBE IT’S A SIGN OF WHAT’S TO COME BUT IT’S ALSO THE PERFECT SUMMATION OF THIS CRAZY EPIC UNENDING LOVE THEY HAVE FOR EACH OTHER AND THIS BIG OPEN ACKNOWLEDGEMENT THAT THEY JUST WANNA FUCKIN SPEND THEIR LIVES WITH ONE ANOTHER AND IT’S AMAZING
2. the prison goodbyeMOST SAD BUT THEY ARE S O IN LOVE. AARON’S LIST OF SHIT ROB COULD GET UP TO TO TRY AND LIGHTEN THE MOOD BUT ALSO TO LIKE… POINT OUT THAT ROBERT IS A FUCKIN NIGHTMARE WITHOUT AARON. AND ROB JUST CAN’T EVEN FUCKIN TALK AND THEN THEIR HUG IS SO DESPERATE AND SAD, LIKE THEY’RE JUST HOLDING ONE ANOTHER AND LOOKING LIKE THEY NEVER WANT TO FLIPPING LET GO, WHICH YOU KNOW THEY ABSOLUTELY DO NOT. IT’S A PERFECT SCENE SO.
1. aaron’s speechFUCK ME. AARON STANDING THERE AND SPELLING OUT ALL THE REASONS WHY HE LOVES ROBERT, ALL THE WAYS IN WHICH HE HAS SEEN ROBERT BE HIS BEST SELF, ALL THE WAYS ROBERT HAS CHANGED HIS LIFE FOR THE BETTER - IT’S SO IMPORTANT TOO, KNOWING THAT ROBERT IS ALWAYS THE ONE THAT GIVES THE BIG SPEECH BUT ALSO KNOWING ALL THE SHIT ROBERT HAS PULLED AND K N O W I N G THAT NO ONE ELSE OUTSIDE OF AARON EVER REALLY BELIEVES THAT ROBERT HAS GROWN AND CHANGED AND THEY’VE SAID AS MUCH - PARTICULARLY IN THE CONTEXT OF BELIEVING ROB WAS ALWAYS GOING TO CHEAT ON AARON. AARON IS THE ONLY ONE WHO REALLY UNDERSTANDS WHAT HAPPENED WITH ONE AND ULTIMATELY UNDERSTANDS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ROBERT’S OLD WAY OF CHEATING VERSUS WHAT HE DID LAST YEAR, WHICH IS SO IMPORTANT. AARON LOVES ROBERT SO MUCH AND MORE THAN THAT, SEES ROBERT FOR WHO HE REALLY IS AND BELIEVES THAT ROBERT DESERVES TO BE LOVED RIGHT BACK AND TBH?? THAT SPEECH WAS THE CULMINATION OF S O MUCH FOR THEM AND IT WAS PERFECT IN EVERY WAY. IT WAS THE PERFECT END PIECE TO ALLOW THEM TO MOVE INTO A NEW ERA AND LIKE TBH. TRY AND TOP THIS MOMENT YK. #BLESSED.

Divided We Fall
For @robron-til-the-end. Tried to write you something involving Robron and a few elements I thought you’d enjoy. I hope you know what an invaluable part of fandom you are. Wishing you that this fandom event as well as many more to come will bring you nothing but the joy you deserve, especially after this rough past year! Much love, your secret valentine. xox Summary: Robron have an unexpected visitor at the scrapyard.
Joe Tate had come by the scrapyard on an afternoon when Robert was there to take Aaron out for lunch. It was shortly after the two of them got back together and everything still very much felt to them as if they were on an unofficial honeymoon.
From his vantage point at the back of the office, Robert was suspiciously eyeing the latest owner of Home Farm and the Dingles’ newest sworn enemy. No, it wasn’t like Joe Tate had to have planned it on purpose, his arrival at the yard precisely on a day when the two of them were planning to have a date during their lunch break, but Robert felt it would be prudent to still entertain the notion. After all, he and Tate already had… a few run-ins, if it can be put that way, which made this coincidence seem less than accidental to him. Not to mention, he did think that he had picked up on someone who he thought might have been Graham earlier in the day. Casually walking by the Mill just in time to catch Robert and Aaron finalising their plans for the day and reluctantly saying goodbye, kissing repeatedly and lowly growling to each other how lunch break couldn’t come soon enough. Whispering how much they hated to be parted for even this short period of time into their kisses. In hindsight, there was more than a good chance it was all the kissing that made it hard for Robert to be fully certain of the identity of their probable stalker. Once Robert let the scenario sink in, that of Joe having come by intentionally on an afternoon when both of them were more than likely to be around, he wasn’t feeling all that prudent after all. Especially not given their uninvited visitor’s rudeness. Aaron had just been in the process of finishing up on some paperwork (he had to do a lot more of that since Adam had left, always grumpily muttering about it under his breath. Which his husband secretly found to be adorable). Robert had been patiently waiting by the interior side of the door (if he was capable of being patient, it was mostly thanks to the fact that it gave him ample opportunity to ogle how good Aaron was looking these days. And to do so without his husband making a face at him, pretending not to be enjoying the attention). When seemingly out of nowhere, Joe stormed in. Not knocking on the door, without thinking permission was something he needed in any form to enter the premises, not looking left or right when he walked straight in, as if he owned the place. Strutting right up to Aaron’s desk, seemingly too set on his goal to detect any additional presence in the room. Approaching it with a familiar air that Robert did not like one bit. He was behaving like he had been in this office before. Robert couldn’t help the niggling doubt that overtook him… had Tate been there before? If it weren’t for that question mark, Robert probably would have already given in to the part of himself that badly itched to lash out and put the guy back in his place. “Good afternoon, Mr. Dingle,” Joe announced, as if it was mandatory for his entrance to entail much pomposity. It was the tone of his voice, all boastful and arrogant. He clearly thought he was above everyone else, as well as above common decency. God, what a prick. Robert couldn’t stand him. Aaron raised his eyes from the desk and the paperwork laid out on it, appraising the man standing before him. Robert had to admit to himself that the man his husband was taking in made for quite an appearance in his elegant, posh and alarmingly flattering clothes, his hair all done up meticulously. Joe Tate obviously took pride in his looks and was willing to put in the time to cultivate the impression he would leave on an audience. The fucking moron. “What d'ya want?” Aaron spat out. In the quiet of the small scrapyard office, Robert couldn’t miss the little huff of surprised dismay that Joe let out in response. He could also hear the undertone of amusement found there, which would have probably been unnoticeable for almost everyone else. Tate has met a challenge in Aaron and he was not displeased by it. Fucker. “Now, now, there’s no need to be like that.” His fucking amused tone. “I heard a lot about this place and I was wondering if I could interest you in a business opportunity,” Joe’s confidence evidently took no hits and the smirk in his voice was genuinely disgusting. “What business would I ever wanna have with you?” Damn. Aaron was being rude as fuck, which Robert probably should have found to be reassuring. But no one knew better than him how appealing Aaron’s attitude could actually be. He remembered all too well how meeting a refusal this blatant, this unapologetic, made Robert himself want to sink his teeth right into destroying it. Made him want to sink his teeth right into the line of Aaron’s neck. Make it curve. Take down all his walls and barriers. Robert’s breath stopped. Aaron’s rudeness worried him because no one was more aware than he was the effect that it could have over a man with a mentality such as his… a man like Tate obviously was. The similarities between himself and Joe became perfectly clear to Robert for the first time as a real sense of panic took over him. He couldn’t keep quiet anymore. “What do you think you’re doing?” Robert took two steps forward, forcing Joe to turn around to him. “Ah, Mr. Sugden. How surprising to find you here,” Joe said with a delight so smug that it indicated the exact opposite. The whole thing planned, then. This interaction with Aaron when Robert would be there, sooner or later, to witness it. This was the time when he had to focus. This was the moment to make sure he won’t fall into Tate’s trap, whatever it was or was meant to achieve. “I’m sure it is. How could you possibly know I’d be here?” Robert was aiming for his deliberate cynicism to play its tricks on Joe. Tate’s smirk widened. “How indeed.” He turned his gaze back to Aaron. “You know, I’ve heard a lot about this business and how it came to be. I can definitely see the appeal.” Robert did his best not to let the anger and tension that he felt shake his voice. “Yeah, I knew it had great potential from the very beginning. Only in the right hands, of course.” “Oh?” Joe looked back at him, with a raised eyebrow. “Are you of the opinion that my investment in this place would not make for the right hands?” Robert was too zoned in on Tate’s features, studying his every reaction, to glance at Aaron. But then again, he didn’t need to. It was clear to him exactly how much his husband must be hating this entire exchange, dying to stop it. “I’m sure it wouldn’t be news to you if I told you about my time up at Home Farm. So yeah, based on my experience with your type of business? Definitely the wrong hands.” The sound Joe made was almost a laughter. “No, not news. And from what I’ve heard, Mr. Dingle wasn’t as confident as you, it took quite a few efforts before he found the right hands for this place. If he has, that is. So wouldn’t that be something, huh?” Tate flashed his smile back at Aaron. “If it turned out you misjudged me.” “Right,” Aaron’s voice was annoyed and impatient, “I don’t know who’d you think you are, marching in here with business proposals after everything you’ve done to my family. But you’re not welcome here and your money don’t impress me. Now do one.” Tate’s smile didn’t falter for a second. “Mr. Dingle. What loyalty you inspire in your investors. I look forward to discovering how you’ve earned such following and what could convince you to entrust your business to my hands after all. As I’m sure eventually you will. I’ll be seeing you.” And right in front of Robert, the fucker had the audacity to let his eyes take one long, last scan of Aaron, top to toes and back up again. Then he nodded at Robert with unhidden satisfaction. Like he accomplished exactly what he set out to do. “Good day,” he even threw in a tiny courtesy in Robert’s direction. As if it truly was just another business meeting come to an end. The door closed behind him, infuriatingly calm. Robert was anything but. “That… That knobhead!” He was too angry to find better, more suitable curse words. “Calm down, Robert, he’s gone. He can’t do us any harm now.” With Tate gone, Aaron didn’t sound as upset as one might have expected him to be. “You know he’s up to something, right?” Robert was pacing the room, glaring at the door behind which Joe disappeared. “That weirdo butler of his was sniffing around this morning. They did this on purpose…” “Did what? Joe Tate wanted to make us an offer and we didn’t even hear him out.” Robert stopped before Aaron’s desk. Before his husband. He leaned forward, placing his hands on the wooden barrier between them, spreading them as wide as they would go, attempting to emphasise his seriousness while downplaying how anxious he was. “You gotta trust me, Aaron. I’m telling ya, he’s got some plan in his head and nothing here today made him think he couldn’t succeed with it.” “He can think what he’d like. He won’t get anything over on us.” Robert didn’t want to put it into words, but he had to. “He’s going to try and seduce you. He did it with Debbie, you’re next on his list. All of you Dingles are valid targets to him.” Aaron’s weirded out expression, making it seem like this was crazy talk, wasn’t putting Robert’s mind at ease. He was sure that however his husband was reacting, Joe’s less than subtle delivery of sexual innuendo meant those intentions were hardly something Aaron could have missed. “He doesn’t actually fancy me. He’s not even gay!” “Yeah,” Robert said, “neither was I. Still couldn’t help wanting to sleep with you, could I?” Aaron snorted. “That’s right, you weren’t gay. You were bi. I know I didn’t get at first what that means,” Robert remembered. That and how much Aaron tried and struggled to understand it. They had come so far, which only made what they had all the more precious. Too precious. “But I did know from the start you were genuinely interested. You weren’t going after me just for the sake of some plan, or else I would have never had you in that garage.” It’s meant to lighten the mood, that last part. But after all they’ve been through to get back to each other… Too precious to take the smallest risk with, too precious to lose again. “What if Joe’s bisexual too, and genuinely after you? In a way he is interested, even if he’s never been with another guy before. When a man like him commits himself to a scheme, he’s truly committed. He’s going to come after ya with all he’s got and he’s not gonna stop until he gets what he wants.” “And you know this for a fact, do ya?” Aaron’s voice now sounded tired more than anything else. “In a way…” Robert hesitated, but pressed on regardless, “I do. I mean… I used to be him, wasn’t I?” Robert hated admitting it. The more upset and disgusted he was with Joe, the harder it was to own up to their many similarities. But he would do that and more if it kept Aaron safe from Joe’s manipulations. Aaron shook his head and something softened in his eyes. “You were never him. D'ya hear me? Because you’re the one that’s gotta trust me on this one. I saw you from the first moment, Robert Sugden. I saw who you were and who you could be. And, yeah. You two have a lot in common. But you were always better than him.” He placed his right hand softly on top of the left one Robert still had splayed out on Aaron’s desk. “Even just a few seconds ago, you were thinking of protecting me from him, weren’t ya? Not only us, but me. You don’t even realise how much better than him you are…” The warmth that already started brewing in the pit of Robert’s stomach as soon as his husband began speaking, it was now spilling all over and touching every internal part of him. Robert listened. And heard once more the love that Aaron felt for him, the love his husband had for him even back when he didn’t have any for himself. Only the appearance of it. That served to remind him of what might be Tate’s Achilles heel. And that it was love again that afternoon which stopped Aaron from intervening while Robert and Joe were exchanging words, despite his own discomfort, recognising that his husband needed the opportunity to assess their uninvited visitor. “Alright,” Robert said with the certainty that his husband gets him. “But you will listen to me with this, right? Because maybe I wasn’t quite him, but I still know how he thinks.” “Goes without saying,” Aaron nodded at him. “Whatever he’s planning, we’re gonna figure it out together and he’s gonna regret ever coming into this office today.” Aaron’s words, his faith in them, it made something settle inside Robert enough to allow him to address one more thing that he had to. Something that he couldn’t have brought up with any other partner, because it would have left him too vulnerable. And if he wouldn’t have, it would have then continued to consume him on the inside. “That knobhead was flirting with you. Whatever we figure out and decide to do, I don’t want him allowed to do that. I don’t want you accepting that or flirting back. Not even pretend flirting.” “Agreed,” Aaron didn’t so much as flinch, not a tiny bit of resistance. “You know that he was just trying to fuck with me through you, right?” Robert sounded to his own ears so much smaller than he thought he would. “Actually…” Aaron started as he rose to his feet, bypassing his desk to wrap Robert up in his arms. Without a thought, his own hands returned the gesture and found their way to Aaron’s waist. Entangled together. As they always should and would be. “Actually it was me he was trying to fuck with. Ya know, in the literal sense,” Aaron said this with that brand of shrugged off cockiness he had from time to time that was so endearing. Probably because he thought that he was joking even as Robert reckoned that he was unwittingly stating nothing but truth. One that being them two, together, brought to the surface, making Robert feel that he’d done good after all. “You don’t have to care or be upset by that. Because I’m never gonna want to fuck with him. Or with anyone else for that matter,” Aaron added to the end of his sentence a gentle bite at the base of Robert’s neck, to make his point, then proceeded to lick at the slightly reddened skin. “Oh,” Robert struggled to not come across quite as breathless as he felt, not yet. But it was futile and he couldn’t help but give in to the impulse to nuzzle against the side of Aaron’s face, “is it just me you want to fuck with, then? In the literal sense?” “Just you,” Aaron reached around to playfully smack Robert’s bottom, “I promise. In every sense”.

grow old and happy with me
robert sugden was an old romantic at heart, prone making grand romantic gestures on days like valentines day and aaron - well, aaron wasn’t.
but this year was different. this year, aaron was going to give his husband all the romance he deserved.
written for @kripkegirl as part of the robron secret valentines exchange!
Aaron felt lucky, to love someone like Robert. His husband was one of those people who believed wholeheartedly in romance, who liked to randomly treat Aaron, who celebrated every tiny, nondescript anniversary, who’d go all out for the big ones.
Aaron loved it - loved all the little gestures, even loved the time Robert bought him flowers because, well, no one had ever bought him flowers before, had they?
He knew it wasn’t as if he didn’t show Robert he loved him. Aaron did, he knew he did - but this year, for the first Valentines Day they were going to spend as a married couple, he was going to go all out.
This year, Aaron Dingle was going to woo his own husband.
