“But do not despise the lore that has come down from distant years; for oft it may chance that old wives keep in memory word of things that once were needful for the wise to know.” - Celeborn to Boromir, Farewell to Lorien, Fellowship of the Ring
Celeborn straight up told amazon to respect the original books and the people who love them so they ignored his existence

Going on record to say Rings of Power absolutely slaps, as a lifelong Tolkien fan I'm so disappointed the way people tried so hard to judge it before it even aired and wanted it to be bad so much that they've literally convinced people to be afraid to watch it and judge for themselves. The visuals are STUNNING, the costumes are phenomenal, the creature design is haunting and so visceral. And the characters and world feel so *lived* miss me with that shit about it being low effort or budget, you can't judge a show by a handful of promo stills. I'm glad I didn't listen to the bs takes from people who are mostly just trying to hide their bigotry behind Tolkien worshipping zealotry.

It's amazing to be how many "fan" groups on Facebook are like:
Doctor Who Memes for Men Who Hate Women

Star Trek Posts for People Who Think the Most Left-wing Show of All Time Is Right-wing
Supernatural (No Commies)
Warhammer 40K Fans Who Don't Understand Irony
Hey Amazon Elves Have to Be White for Some Bizarre Reason We Can't Explain (It's Racism)
Hey Marvel Norse Gods Have to Be White for Some Bizarre Reason We Can't Explain (It's Also Racism)
Doctor Who Fans Who Hate That Doctor Who Went Woke (in 1963)

i havent watched Rings of Power and i dont plan to but JESUS the racism from even self-proclaimed liberals is exhausting. like ive seen ppl moaning abt the dwarves being black bc ‘ooohhh biological accuracy about the sun and blaaaaaaaaa’ theres a spider the size of a car. ‘weeehhhh tolkien wouldn’t approve!!!’ the man’s been dead longer than ive been alive. ‘b-b-b-but it’s an ALLEGORY for EUROPE’ brown people have existed in europe for centuries, die mad about it.
even the shit that isnt racist on the surface is weak. ‘but amazon is an EVIL CORPORATION and BAD PEOPLE BENEFIT FROM US WATCHING’ okay fine but youre gonna hate looking up who produced the original trilogy!! (hint: it was harvey weinstein) ‘oh but it isnt faithful to the source material!!!’ 1) where was this energy for the hobbit trilogy 2) i dont really care. books are a completely different format to tv, yeah there’s gonna be changes. if they made it exactly like the silmarillion only diehard fans would watch it and it wouldn’t be good. ‘uhhhh the fx and costuming is bad’ literally every big production is gonna have that flaw, they dont wanna use unions.
man i wasnt gonna say anything abt this bc i dont rlly watch tv shows in general but yous have pissed me the fuck off. if you dont wanna watch it, fine, but dont go pissing over the ONLY tolkein-related work that actually has POC featured bc ultimately the ppl ur hurting most are the cast and crew who fought for this.

i wrote a thing!
Fic link: i’d like to hold her head underwater
fandom: LOTR, The Rings of Power | ship: Galadriel/Sauron
rated: M | tagged: kissing, seduction, dark fantasy, dramatic irony
summary:  What if Halbrand doesn’t threaten her in the lush gardens of Eregion? What if instead, he tries another method to gain her fealty? If he must ease her doubts, perhaps his lips could do more than just whisper sweet nothings.
a canon divergence from The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, Episode 8 "Alloyed"
excerpt!
His kisses are like his laughter, like how he teases her, like the look he gives her when she notices and when he thinks she isn’t paying attention. Delightful, delicious. Fond. She could linger here for an age.
Halbrand takes her head in his hands, one thumb sliding along her jaw and the other at her chin. He’s gentle but she can sense that he could not be at any moment. Her heart stutters.
“Would you claim me as yours here, in this sacred place?” he murmurs. “Would you have me kneel here and be your supplicant?” His lips and his tongue and his teeth; a sublime sweetness. “Would you have me tell the wide world what you have given me?” His whispers move to her ear and she clings to him like a woman drowning, bound in this queer moment of affection. “Would you see yourself as I see you?” His lips touch the shell of her ear and she’s a pillar of flame. “Would you bind your heart to mine?”
She thinks: Is this a spell? She thinks: Am I just lost? She thinks: Or is this man what I have been searching for all this time?
She immediately pictures herself standing over Sauron’s body; a routine fantasy she has had for a thousand years. It will be unconditional victory. She will have thrown down her enemy; the dark lord, the deceiver and the terrible dread. She will have smote his ruin upon stone and earth, and his song will no longer be heard. His helmet will crush, his spear will break. His body will become dust underneath her and his weak spirit will wane until the ending of time.
The wise and brave Galadriel, avenging her brother. Ridding the land of evil forever more.
The fantasy shifts for she will turn and he will be there. Her most trusted friend and ally, Halbrand, the King of the Southlands. He will be weary from battle and covered in ash and dust and blood, but his eyes will be like flame. Horns will sound behind them, and they will take no notice. She will not have to ask for he will be immediately upon her, taking his first kiss from her lips after the defeat of her great enemy.
“Galadriel,” he says, like a prayer.

It just keeps getting worse for the Rings of Power. Here are some cast member/producer statements regarding the show.
She (the chick playing Disa) explained, “It’s their time and it’s so important and I hope many people will see this fantasy and be able to relate to it. This is a reflection of the world we live in, there are many and we are different and we will embrace and discover, and peel back, and learn, and educate, and be educated.”
This show should not reflect our world; it should reflect Tolkien's world. People also have not had a problem relating to it which is why it's one of the best selling fiction works in history. Is this show going to be preachy ("educate and be educated")? People generally don't like being preached at/talked down to and I can't see this going over well.
These cast statements echo what Executive Producer of the series Lindsey Weber told Vanity Fair back in February, “It felt only natural to us that an adaptation of Tolkien’s work would reflect what the world actually looks like.”
It seems to me that the only natural thing to do was to reflect Tolkien's world if you are doing a Tolkien adaptation. Make no mistake, this will not be an adaptation. They will not be telling his story with his characters (there was no warrior Galadriel, Miriel was never queen or queen regent, and they have more original characters listed so far than actual Tolkien characters and that alone is a huge red flag). It will be a veneer of Tolkien so thin that if you barely scratch it, it will disappear.
This is going to be very expensive fan fiction written/produced by people who don't actually seem to be fans. I love fan fic. I write it and read it. I like AUs, modern AUs, smut fics, and other things that vary quite a bit from Tolkien's stories and characters. It's cool to have fun with it and sometimes do crazy things. But, when someone buys the rights to actually use the real thing, I expect a proper adaptation. That doesn't mean you can't take some liberties and make some changes so that the material works better for film/tv, but it should not be so different as to be unrecognizable in character/theme/storyline.
If you watch this as a generic fantasy show, you might enjoy it. I'm not impressed by anything so far. The costumes/props mostly look cheap and like they came from Party City (seriously some of the helmets/armor/crowns look plastic), the elves just look like regular people with pointy ears, and the "not hobbits" (yes, Harfoots are hobbits!) look like they rolled around in dirt/trash and then decided to go on about their day.
One last thing, do you know what the show is supposed to be about based on any of the trailers that have been released? It's called The Rings of Power yet there has been no mention of rings or of their creation. Obviously as Tolkien fans, we have a general idea of what they might cover but you can't tell that from the promotional material alone. If I didn't know anything about Tolkien, I would think this is a world that had been at war, the war is now over and some people think it will be a time of peace and others think more conflict is on the horizon. Also a meteor lands somewhere. I can't work up any excitement for a such a bland, generic plot.

I’m sorry but LIKE!!!!! they loved each other for so long, they never spoke of it, they spoke only in small, invisible touches, they both tended plants, he did before the war, they shared this with each other, they loved each other but other matters were more pressing, he crawled into a tunnel, she killed an orc to save her son, nobody trusted her but she stepped up anyway, she made them listen, he fought his way out of a pit to get back to her, he made a deal with his enemy so he might see her again, she ran alone into danger with only a hand scythe, she had no choice, she didn’t know he’d be out there too, they loved each other so much but it was bigger than just their lives, he proposed anyway, he adopted her son, he held off an entire army for one (1) kiss, he almost lost her, he almost lost her again, she talked him through emergency surgery, she offered her neck rather than give up the weapon and he didn't give it up either, he loved her so much but it was bigger than his love, it was bigger than their lives, they survived anyway, they won but they lost, he fucked up, he failed, but they survived, they’re getting a fresh start, they’re getting married, they already are, they’re a family, they’ve been one since before the beginning, she’s guiding her people to a new home, she’s a healer-leader, he’s her protector, they love each other so much, it’s more than love, it’s beyond love, it’s a responsibility, screaming crying throwing myself into the sea NOBODY IS DOING IT LIKE THEY ARE

Listen. If you just love Amazon so so so much, and you want to give them all your money, then go right ahead. But don’t come into my ask box or into the notes of my posts telling me to shut up, writing all kinds of rude messages, and ranting about how you hate my posts. It’s just mean and immature.
