I'm thinking about Riki from Xenoblade Chronicles and I love that dude so much. He's a very literal dad friend and its just great. I know it's easy to just dismiss him as comedy relief compared to the rest of the main team but he's got his own layers.
Spoilers, if I have to say that for a 2010 game.
The big scene for Riki is the scene on Mechonis Arm with Dunban and Melia and it basically creates Riki's depths single-handedly. It plays out like a pretty typical Riki scene, with him being lazy when wanting to rest then greedy when he goes fishing, but when Dunban questions his actions and suggests Riki had noticed Melia's tiredness it puts every other Riki scene into question. The two then discussing Shulk, Fiora and Dunban's relationships then shows Riki's understanding of his companions again as Riki catches that Dunban is somewhat of a father to Fiora, in spite of having seen little interaction between, especially since Riki begins that conversation when noticing that Dunban seems down. Finally, when the group get going again Riki says he notices the pipe while scouting, suggesting he may have foregone sleeping like the other two to some degree in order to scout.
This scene is important for Riki for two reasons - it establishes the idea of a facade and clearly shows Riki's understanding and observant nature towards others, directly linking this to his History as a father.
Firstly the facade. This, to me, recontextualises almost every other scene we see Riki in. While I'm not going to say that the lovable idiot we see Riki as is entirely facetious, I think its something he consciously enhances to do good by others. This can be in both the way we see in the scene, where he feigns a struggle to help someone he believes is hiding a similar struggle, or as comedic relief, much like he is for the game as a whole. In particular I think that he plays up 'funny little Nopon Riki' to cheer up the group a bit - while there can be levity through things like Reyn's antics, the group can be quite a somber bunch who've all very recently suffered terribly - its not unreasonable to say Riki would look at them and think they needed to laugh a bit. You can ever see a bit of this in his conversation with Dunban in the given scene - in particular, when he says "Riki make mistake. Dunban not daddypon" or something to that effect about Dunban and Fiora I always get the feeling he's playing it up a little to make Dunban more comfortable and willing to share his worries.
Secondly, his perceptiveness. This is what I think motivates his playing into the funny little Nopon idea, as he notices all his companions issues and wants to cheer them up. While this is most prominent in the scene I focused on, there are other examples of it, such as noticing Shulk's issue with lacking parental figures and desire for a family in their Heart-to-Hearts, to the degree that he actually offers to adopt Shulk into his family if Shulk wants that. I like to think that, even if Shulk does deny that offer, it made him more comfortable being present in Riki's family's life, and I think Riki's kids' similarities to Reyn and Sharla (though admittedly likely more for Gameplay purposes) indicates the characters had a presence in Riki's family's lives.
In the end, I think the literal purpose of Riki is that he is a dad for the rest of the Xenoblade 1 crew. He's a mature older figure who makes terrible jokes that put a smile on your face and always seeks to benefit the rest of the group. Unlike the rest of the team he doesn't really have any kind of character arc, but I don't think that's a flaw. To me he feels like he's already had his arc, his life changing adventure, it was just (and I know I'm gonna sound cliché here) parenting. In his final heart-to-heart with Shulk he talks about having said goodbye to many littlepons when the time (p.s I always thought it was a shame we never got to see any of Riki's kids out in the rest of the Bionis, I think that would have been quite a neat little detail) and I think that raising and saying goodbye to those kids is what changed him into the Nopon we know (he even mentions having raised many littlepons in the conversation with Dunban I have referenced so many times). It made the kind of Nopon who could support and aide the young people questing to save the world so they can become the best versions of themselves.
So that's why I love Riki really. Even if he doesn't have the complex arcs and thematic depth of a character like Shulk or Dunban, he's still a critical part of the main Xenoblade group in my eyes and an interesting character in his own right. What a funky little dude.

Here Riku, he call himself “common variety” for some reason. Untrue as he serves Melly and is dutiful Nopon! Riki and family proud of him.

Xenoblade Chronicles DE: Future Connected
Alright, here is my long-overdue list of what has been revealed and what I can deduce about Future Connected!
Story
1.) Tyrea and other High Entia NPCs make a return appearance, along with some Machina as well. There is at least one new Machina NPC.
2.) There is a new antagonist, a half-Homs High Entia man in black and violet robes. This image I pulled from Reddit, but the poster got it from a Japanese trailer.
3.) Alcamoth and at least parts of Eryth Sea (the seal islands for certain) are connected to the Left Shoulder. Most likely, this is all on the carcass of the Bionis, and many refugees have retreated to the Left Shoulder since Alcamoth has been overrun by this shadow enemy. You get to explore Alcamoth and the Left Shoulder.
4.) The entire story is centered on Melia. Perhaps it’s her gaining confidence to lead her fractured people. Perhaps it’s more. I wouldn’t get hyped up for a massive crossover with Xenoblade 2 or even X, however. Supposedly, the story doesn’t reveal anything extremely massive regarding any other Xeno- game; however, the Twitter user who got to pre-play the game has remained very vague about this.
5.) You travel with two Nopon, Nene and Kino, Riki’s children, says Gamexplain.
6.) There are shadow figures that are similar to Xenoblade 2′s Guldos, only orange and slightly different. They’re very spectral-like, much akin to the laser eye in Alcamoth.
7.) Jenna Coleman is Melia.
8.) The story literally begins with a flashback of Zanza’s and the Bionis’ death.
9.) The story may be at least 15 hours long, but that’s based on one person’s screenshot. It doesn’t give the answer of it that file was 100% completed or just the plot of Future Connected.

Gameplay
1.) Any armor, including the replica Monado, is transferrable into your main game save file upon completion of Future Connected.
2.) Shulk, Melia, Nene, and Kino are the only playable characters. You still have a party of three, and you begin with Melia as the default character in control. However, you don’t have to play her, you can switch who you control just like normal.
3.) Melia’s arts are more clearly depicted so using her is a little easier--and easier to understand, or at least, this is what Reddit claims.
4.) As you travel the Left Shoulder, you encounter 12 Nopon who are surveying the land. You gather them, and they give you different battle effects--buffs, healing, et cetera. You can choose which effects they give you when your chain attack bar fills; however, there is no more chain attack, this is the new chain attack.
5.) You can pull Shulk’s hood up to make him a punk rebel and make Melia goth.
6.) The Left Shoulder’s wildlife is the same as much of the Bionis’ and reuses the same enemies.
Theories
1.) The mysterious new villain could be some spurned member of the royal family. I say that because his outfit is different in style than many of the Alcamoth citizens.
2.) With Tyrea there (I’m assuming protecting the other High Entia refugees), there could be more with the Bionite Order. If there is, that makes me very excited!
Concluding Thoughts
I know at least one reviewer was pretty harsh on Future Connected. He said that it didn’t feel like a Xenoblade story, the dialogue had none of the charm of the original, and it was boring. However. The reviewer admitted that Melia isn’t his favorite character. He does have a bias against a Melia-focused story, which will lead to a different opinion. And I watched another reviewer who was much more favorable toward it and actually did show footage of them playing Future Connected.
Yes, there is a high chance the dialogue isn’t quite the Xenoblade we know. But this is natural; it’s been 10 years since the original. Being able to match the dialogue tone perfectly for every reoccuring character and just in general is hard. It’s very difficult to achieve a perfect tonal match, especially with such a time gap. Do not expect it to feel exactly like the original--that way, if it does feel like it, you’ll be pleasantly surprised versus disappointed!
The gameplay is just like the original. The exploration, the arts. The only change is the chain attack. I know some information floated around from a Japan preorder card that it was a new combat system, but it’s not.
All in all, go into this with an open mind and the knowledge that the world we’ll be leaping into is a new Xenoblade location with more story regarding Tyrea and Melia!
I’ve decided to start it first rather than obsess over what it could be about while I play the main game. That way too, I have some other armor options. What will you guys start first?

Sharla gives the reading to Riki's kids thing another try, but for reasons known only to her, it's the book fiora had from the crayon ask.
Riki had once again asked Sharla to read a bedtime story to his children. This time, she made sure she hadn’t eaten anything spicy and hallucinagenic, so she was confidant she could do it this time.
She made it through the first few pages before she realised this wasn’t a story book. Not one for children, anyway. Quickly, she tried to rememebr where she’d gotten it and froze when she remebered she’d gotten it from Fiora’s room.
Sharla started improvising, not wanting to read more of the book. She’d have to sneak it back into Fiora’s room before she realised it was gone.
She turned pages to make it look like she was reading from it and OH GOD THERE WERE PICTURES. She turned that page quickly, praying the kids didn’t notice. Thankfully, she knew the story she was saying by heart and closed the book.
She finished the story, with many sleepy littlepon at her feet. She put them to bed and ran back to Fiora’s room, where she left the book where she’d found it. Hopefully she hadn’t noticed it was gone.

That is All a Daddypon Can Do (A Fluffy Xenoblade Chronicles Drabble) SPOILERS
Summary: Reyn's getting nervous about becoming a father and Riki provides Reyn with advice and reassurance. Reyn and Riki friendship drabble. Fluffy. Takes place post-game, ENDGAME XENOBLADE CHRONICLES SPOILERS. Mild Future Connected Spoilers.
This began as a fluffy headcanon that eventually became a fluffy drabble. Hope you enjoy!
Reyn and Riki were sitting at the edge of the dock. Reyn was holding a fishing pole and looking more serious than usual while Riki danced beside him.
“Go Reyn! Catch big big fish for Riki!” Riki exclaimed, continuing to dance.
“Hm? Oh yeah, Riki, I’ll get one soon.” Reyn replied in a distracted, out-of-character tone. This did not go unnoticed by Riki, who stopped dancing and looked up at Reyn with big eyes.
“What wrong, Reyn? Reyn not look happy.” Riki inquired.
“What d’ya mean? I’m feeling fine.” Reyn replied in the same tone as before. Riki shook his head.
“No, no, Reyn lying. Most times when Riki ask Reyn for fish, Reyn say ‘Oi, lay off, furball!’” Riki said with his best Reyn impression. Reyn couldn’t help but snort at Riki’s voice.
“Ok, I’ll admit that was kinda funny.” Reyn said with a smirk on his face. “I gotta say, you’re pretty good at reading people.”
“So Reyn tell Riki what wrong?”
Reyn took a deep breath and sighed. “Yeah, guess I might as well. You’ll keep asking until I do, won’t ya?”
“Reyn know Riki veeeeery well!” Riki agreed as he danced again.
“All right, well… I’ve been feeling a little nervous lately. Sharla’s only 2 months from having the baby now.”
“Reyn nervous about babypon coming? But Riki thought Reyn want to be daddypon and start big family!”
“Don’t get me wrong, I still want to be a dad. I’m really excited about the baby coming. It’s just…”
“It just…?”
“I have no idea how to be a father. All I’m really good for is bashing up stuff and taking hits. I don’t really have experience with kids. I’ve played with some of the kids in Colony 9, sure, but that’s not the same as being a dad.”
“Ohhhhh, so Reyn nervous that when babypon come, Reyn won’t be good daddypon?” Riki asked.
“You hit the nail on the head, furball.” Reyn confirmed. “I mean, it’s been 8 years since we beat Zanza. I’ve definitely grown up some. But being a father… I’ve never done it before. I’m afraid I’ll screw it up, make the kid hate me. Heh, can you believe it? I helped defeat a god and this is what scares me.”
Riki never stopped smiling as he listened to Reyn’s confession. He began to jump up and down.
“Reyn no worry!” Riki exclaimed. “Reyn will be good daddypon!”
“Eh? And what makes you so sure?”
“Riki have same scarys when Oka expecting first littlepon! Riki not know how to be daddypon, Riki afraid he make many mistakes and not raise littlepon well. But Riki love littlepon very much, even before littlepon was born! So Riki decide that he will do very best for littlepon and Oka! And if Riki make mistake, Riki learn and do better next time! Riki know Reyn already love babypon, right?”
“O-of course I do! I loved that kid the second Sharla told me she was pregnant!”
“Then Reyn be ok! Riki know Reyn do his best for babypon! Love is most important. Love make everyone try hard! Reyn will make mistakes, but that all part of being daddypon. Reyn learn from mistakes and keep becoming better and better at being daddypon!”
Reyn processed what Riki had said. “So what you’re saying is that it’s normal to be nervous when you’re about to become a dad?”
“MmmHmm!” Riki nodded.
“And that everyone makes mistakes when they have a kid?”
“MmmHmm!” Riki confirmed again.
“But it’s love that makes us good parents and helps us become better parents?”
“Reyn got it! Reyn not as dumb as Reyn looks!”
“Oi, shut up, furball!” Reyn replied with a laugh as he lightly shoved Riki. Riki nearly lost his balance and almost fell off the dock.
“Riki have one more thing to tell Reyn: When Reyn say he not have experience being daddypon? Not true! Riki remember how Reyn help Nene!”
Reyn raised an eyebrow. “Huh? Are you talking about me teaching Nene how to fight?”
“Yes yes! Reyn teach Nene strong arts! Reyn very helpful and patient with Nene! Helpfulness and patient-ness very important for daddypon to have! Now Nene very very strong, rival her dadapon now!”
“Heh, yeah, your daughter’s something else, Riki,” Reyn replied, remembering their training sessions. “She’s a regular Heropon now.”
“And Reyn help Nene get there! Reyn will do same with own littlepon!”
Reyn was visibly calmer and he gave Riki a grateful smile. “Thanks a lot, Riki. This little chat actually made me feel a lot better.”
“Riki happy to help friends, especially in matters of daddyponning! Now that Reyn feel better, Reyn catch big fish for Riki?”
“Since you helped me so much, yeah, I’m gonna catch you a big fish before I go home.” Reyn agreed.
“Hooray, Riki get big fish, Riki happy happy!” Riki cheered.
Three hours later, Reyn finally caught a big fish and both of them went home happy; Reyn more confident in his future parenting skills and Riki thrilled about his future dinner.

I dig through some more old fanfiction and I found a folder dubbed "all the ships." And by that, I mean a list of every possible one-on-one character romance, starting with Alvis/Chief Dunga. I think I had plans to write all of them, but I only found one: Oka x Metal Face.
It is as questionable as it sounds.

Riki stares at the colossal mechon before him. A gloating smirk on its mechanical face. Growling, the Nopon reaches behind him and pulls out his biter, preparing to bash the gigantic machine before him.
“Now, now, wouldn’t want to do that.” The mechon smirked. Riki inhaled sharply as a familiar Nopon appeared on the mechon’s shoulder.
“W-what?!” Riki demanded. “What wifeypon doing with Metal Face?”
“Oka find new Hubbypon.” Oka declared, bouncing on Metal Face’s shoulder. “Mumkhar steal heart of Oka with incredible wits.”
“Riki not hear this!” Riki shouted, frustrated. “Riki demand proper divorce!”
“What a catch, don’t you think?” Metal Face mocked as the mechon’s face leaned into Riki’s wife and kissed her squarely on the lips.
“Grr! Riki is angry! Why wifeypon not tell Riki about this sooner?!”
“Riki too stupid to take care of family!” Oka said. “You owe village lots of moneys! Oka find new source of income!”
“Riki pay back moneys to village! So wifeypon and littlepon can live good life!”
“Littlepon now live good life!” Oka stated. “And no thanks to Riki. Oka was right to get help from new love of Oka’s life.”
Riki squealed in surprise as a bunch of cyborg littlepon approached him.
“Dadapon, need water!” A small littlepon cried out. “Why Dadapon not get littlepon water?”
“Dadapon, where littlepon?” Another cried. “Where big tree? Where littlepon now?”
“Oka, littlepon not live good life on big sword!” Riki shouted to his wifeypon. “Look at Littlepon!”
“Littlepon get used to new life!” Oka shouted back. “Leave Oka and littlepon alone with new Hubbypon of Oka!”
“Ya’ll heard the girl.” Metal Face said. “Get out. I just need to take out this runt.”
“NOOOOO!” Riki shouted as metallic claws pierced through his stomach.

Riki woke up in a panicked burst, breathing heavily. Big sword was still same. Wifeypon was still wifeypon. Riki would be OK. Oka wouldn’t marry Metal Face, probably.
