Some misc Bleach thoughts before I tackle post-timeskip:
The theme of loneliness keeps coming back and I keep having incoherent thoughts about it! I’m trying to write it into an actual meta but I don’t know what the point I’m trying to make is....maybe I’ll need to finish before I find it because there’s definitely some more to say about it from the last arc at least?
Is it like, the real enemy is loneliness? Probably deeper than that...
When I was writing up the masterpost I realized how it basically went from “episodic urban fantasy” to “battle battle battle”. Not that there weren’t battles in the Substitute arc, but there wasn’t an a/b/c(/d/etc) plot with several battles going on at once basically all the time. (Not making a real point with this, just an observation.)
10th division and fire/ice - Rangiku and Isshin have fire-type/referencing zanpakutou; Hitsugaya has ice-type--is this just a fun parallel type thing or is it symbolic? (Rukia also has ice-type and Yamajii and Momo have fire-type too, so do they fit into this at all or nah?)
Why is the moon always crescent when shown on the page? Just because Kubo likes it? Does it mean anything wrt all the other moon imagery?
I have lots of feelings about 11th squad and id and instinct and identity but that deserves its own post and i need to reread the last arc for that anyway

damn gin got her where it hurts.....like, he’s so cruel. he did all this pointless shit nominally for rangiku and kubo flat-out says that’s never what she wanted, and this is what starts to hammer in the point. i do keep harping on this whenever gin/ran comes up in canon but i do think it’s well-executed in a way. gin claimed to do it for her but he was really only doing it for himself, and that’s the awful tragedy of it. and in terms of competing ships, like....i don’t really ship him with anyone (like canon gin/ran is fine as it is to the plot but i don’t really feel a particular way toward it) but like i can absolutely see him getting with aizen/tosen/kira/ulquiorra/etc while claiming/believing that his heart belongs to her or wtv. he never came off as ~truly devoted/loyal~ to me i guess? but i’m not a shipper so perhaps i shouldn’t speak too much on this.

i mean, tosen is right...hollowfication by choice vs by your mom passing it down to you in the womb is uh. why does that make it worse. like in-universe komamura is right, it’s corruption (in a heavy-handed metaphorical way) but...if, as komamura says, “the corruption i speak of is betraying your friends, allies and even subordinates in an attempt to gain excessive power” (which, fair!) then why did he bring up hollowfication to begin with? i know it’s symbolic but it comes off very awkwardly and with unfortunate implications....plus wanting power is good when ichigo does it right? (who was it who told him to go after it anyway, kenpachi? the kenpachi in his mind? idr ugh)

i do like that the first captain ichigo holds his own against is kenpachi, who like him does not use kido and has no formal training, relying only on raw strength, no shikai/bankai. his style is really only suited to go up against kenpachi (and kenpachi would hold back to a point as well).

yeah sometimes you do look back at a time and put your finger on it as a turning point, but other times it’s hard to say--ig i’ve never been through something as big n wild as the bleach kids. but that sort of anticipatory feeling, the heavy air before the rain type thing (i wonder if the rain mini-arcs are a metaphor somehow)...especially on a meta level, bleach itself transforms from monster of the week urban fantasy to...whatever it becomes, and never really goes back? like even when it does it doesn’t, you can’t stuff it back in the bag (all the stuff about the larger universe, gotei 13, complex worldbuilding stuff) /ramble but yeah this is my fave arc for a reason--i like the way it’s grounded in the human world, and i don’t like that it eventually basically abandoned that. but maybe my feelings on all that will change with this reread who can say

before we get started, i want to say i’ve never actually read this arc--i stopped reading and then started again in the middle of the last arc, went back and reread that again, but never actually got around to this in the intervening years--probably due to a combination of ‘more new characters i already cannot remember the names’ + ‘supposed to be chad’s arc but not really’ + wanting to save myself a little bit of bleach content for later/not wanting it to be Truly Over. but now we have translated LNs and more anime and a mobile game and i am also okay with having read all of it. in this modern world franchises never die anyway so let’s get to it.
