The revelation that the blobby scientist has given me may be a big deal. But consider that we also finally are able to get into deeper, more ancient areas and find THIS there? Wonder what happened to make it in the 1000 years…

So I just got my kickstarter backer’s Steam code for Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon and gave it a spin.
ASIJDIOAKLJDLAKSDASDSALDSLKAJDJLJ-
*ahem* It is an excellent time. Something to hold me over until Ritual of the Night is finally out. It reminds me heavily of Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse/Akumajo Densetsu on the NES and Famicom. Especially the soundtrack. They seem to have used the same sound system that was used in the Famicom version of Castlevania III and it is excellent.

Nothing Sez “Student Game” More Than The Dinosaur Evening News (that’s a good thing, btw)
The above is Mediazoic, which takes place in an alternate reality in which dinosaurs have come back to rule the earth and they've hired you, puny human, to make sure their televised broadcasts are dino family safe.
You moderate comments left on message boards, censor full frontal dino nudity, and so on. It's a student game alright, and one of my top picks from the NYU Game Center Student Showcase2018!
I was also fond of Dreams For Your Computer because CRTs, magnets, and cats...
Tumblr media
... Here's what it looks like in action, btw.
Though the one game that I liked the most, and which would actually fare well on the marketplace, would have to be Static...
youtube
And honorable mention goes to an updated take on Flight Simulator, which recreates a 6 hour long commercial flight as a passenger...
Tumblr media
... The best part was the look on Stephen Totilo's face, who kinda didn't get it.
When was the NYU thing btw? Over two weeks ago, and it’s been even longer since the last update. Sorry about that. You know the deal: a million, billion things going on. As usual.
Hence why it’ll take not just one, but two bursting at the seams posts, to cover the second half of May! So onto part one…
Please, please, PLEASE let these Game Center CX Blu-rays have an English language option (via miki800.com)...

Not a day goes by in which I don’t wonder how that guy who appears in the instruction manual for Bomberman B-Daman is doing these days (via videogameartarchive & videogameartarchive)...

A print ad for the Famicom adaptation of Akira that wasn't all that hot (via videogameads)...

“Where you headed towards?”

“Low poly buildings, under a low poly sky. Who knows, maybe there’s some low poly birds up there, behind those low poly clouds…” (via pmpkn)

Tumblr media
Why yes, I have heard of the Ocelot Arcade System, by virtue of it being Quality Simon Carless content...

... BTW, “Quality content” is in reference to this. Moving on: yes, I've also heard of VecFever. It plays games that you might be familiar with, since it emulates old vector MAME titles...

So annoyed that I only find out about this Games Glorious shirt on the very last day of kylefewell‘s Japanese extrusion (via miki800.com)...
Tumblr media
Not a fan of the game (don’t hate, I just don’t find it very enthralling), yet for whatever reason, I REALLY want this vintage Mappy sweatshirt (via namcomuseum)...
Tumblr media

Tumblr media
Much like with regular attire, with cosplay, sometimes it’s all about the accessories (via frankiebalboa)...
Tumblr media
Don’t think I’ve ever seen this piece of Marvel Super Heroes vs Street Fighter art before (via segacity)...
Tumblr media
For those who dig POC, as well those who dig VF, and also those who dig FV... that last one's Fighting Vipers, BTW (via fightersmegamix)...
Tumblr media
It’s a crying shame that Fighting Vipers is such an unknown commodity these days (via kazucrash)...

Virtua Fighter vs Virtua Fighter… Kid (via segacity)...

So hyped for RPG Time, based solely upon the headline image used for this 10 ten list of BitSummit games (via @indiegameweb)...

Tumblr media
Been a while since I’ve seen the handiwork of Joe Bleeps, largely since it’s been a while since I’ve been collecting Game Culture Snapshots; the man has certainly stepped up his game (boy mods) since way back when (via kotaku.com)...
Tumblr media
Am also very much impressed by the Game Boy Macro, though once again, am super irritated that GBA games do not rest flush with the DS Lite’s body...

An example of function over form I guess (@gamesyouloved)...

Familiar with Line Wobbler? Ever wished you could play it on the go? Are you into demakes? For the Game Boy Advance? (via @diskmem)

My fave part of this NES 2 print ad is how, in order to truly drive the message of “EVOLVE OR BECOME EXTINCT” home, whomever felt it necessary to include a little picture of a dinosaur (via nintendometro)...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Was this an ad for the SNES? I ask because it’s considerably more sophisticated when compared to what you usually encountered in gaming rags at the time (via nintendometro)...
Tumblr media
This ad for the GoldStar version of the 3DO, hailing from Korea, makes me so proud to be (half) Korean, you have no idea (via notablegamebox)...
Tumblr media
This Space Invaders tribute piece is like the cover art to some 80s heavy metal record (via shmups)...
Tumblr media
Meanwhile, the album art for the Metal Black soundtrack feels more Pink Floyd-ish than anything else (via reportal)...
Tumblr media
As amazing as it would have been to attend a ZUNTATA concert 20 years ago, I desperately wanted to see them perform various Darius cuts live just the other week (via miki800.com)...
Tumblr media
This cover art for a tribute album celebrating 25 years of Mega Man is still quite good, 31 years after the fact (via rnn-draws)...
Tumblr media
My recommended reading this time is a comparison of all the various Mega Man sprites that have been, including a few that you may not be familiar with (via retrovania-vgjunk.blogspot.com)...

Apparently there was a Mega Man boss that was part arcade machine, but he only appeared in some mobile game, for f's sake Capcom (via mendelpalace)...

Tumblr media
From dark & dreary, to warm & fuzzy, yet still black & white (via this old post from a few years back)...

Old photos of a Japanese school kid obsessing over the Famicom are somewhat dime a dozen, but the PC Engine? A very rare treat (via gamingremembrance)...
Tumblr media
From black & white photographs of Japanese 80s kids playing consoles, to a full color animated gif of US 80s kids at the arcade (via tvneon)...
Tumblr media
Time to wrap things up by touching upon something that kept me awfully busy over the past few: Death By Audio Arcade X Dreamhouse II. Here's a rather mysterious image that appeared on the FB event page, and which was utilized in my promotional push...
Tumblr media
... Did it work? You’ll have to find out in my part 2 of my Attract Mode X Tumblr: May 2018 recap! Due tomorrow. Maybe.

Well, Jesus Christ, for my obscure character fanart of the night, here’s the nightmarish Witch from the BBC Micro edutainment game Granny’s Garden. Or, at least, my larger-scale rendition of her unsettling nightmare face that would pop up at you every time you lose. Which was often.
It’s fascinating how the game she comes from is considered a classic of educational gaming in the UK, but outside of such is generally unknown and; as I discovered upon researching it; a fucking baffling fever dream of a game.
That’s the fascinating thing about UK gaming, it’s kind of it’s own isolated bizarre island ecosystem of gaming culture that grew up around things like the ZX Spectrum and the Amiga, that produced all sorts of experiments.
It’s interesting to examine; to be sure; flawed but fascinating...
For those who want to know more, @vgjunk has a great article on the game here: [retrovania-vgjunk.blogspot.com/2018/04/grannys-garden-bbc-micro.html]

Hi! Love your blog. For sure you hear this question very often, but what are your favourite video games of all time? Or at least Sega Mega Drive/Genesis games. Thank you!
I wrote a couple of articles on this very topic: http://retrovania-vgjunk.blogspot.co.uk/2016/09/vgjunks-favourite-games.html
http://retrovania-vgjunk.blogspot.co.uk/2016/09/vgjunks-favourite-games-part-2.html
As for the Megadrive, my favourite MD game is Shining Force II.

This “future” time we're in is pretty grim looking, if you ask me. City lights are nice, but from the sound of it, Winderia hasn't been doing so good in this trade deal with Lachiem. What with all the murder.

Undefined Behavior Is My Famicase Game Of The Year 2018
It's that time of the year, in which METEOR throws an art show featuring fictional Famicom cassettes.
Now, I'm a somewhat hard to impressive individual, though I was able to find a record number of carts (about 20) that I not only found pretty to look at, but which also got me wishing that they were playable. A self-produced requirement that may seem silly to some, but hey, that's just me. Anyhow, here's the rest of the bunch...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
BTW, a bonus mention for @brent_ashe's entry, for also designing the packaging...
Tumblr media
It's also that time of the week, in which I go over all the stuff I tweeted the one before. So! Sticking with fake games for bit; Ikea is finally publishing games for the PS4 and the names alone sound a lot more interesting than their offerings for the Xbox 360 (via @campbellbird148)...
Tumblr media
I wasn't joking about the 360, cuz case in point; hopefully Grand Theft Alex improves upon Grand-ma's Auto’s flaws (the load times were atrocious; via kotaku.com)...
Tumblr media
Anyone else remember that Genesis game that would have starred only the female members of the X-Men? (via segacity)
Tumblr media
Sticking with old game mags, we've got another cover to cover tour of an entire issue, courtesy of Chris Alamio at Classic Gaming Quarterly. And this one's a good one; Nintendo Power #7, the one with Mega Man 2 on the cover...
youtube
... It's a great watch; Chris makes the same observations and asks the same questions you have also also made, back in the day (and have since long since forgotten). It's also perfect for a lazy Sunday. You know, how video game magazines used to be?
Yet another thing I miss about game rags are the ads. The sillier the attempt at being shocking, the better (via oldgamemags)...
Tumblr media
Today’s recommended reading is a survey of all the times Mortal Kombat graced the cover of game mags during the 90s (via retrovania-vgjunk)...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Behold the IRL inspiration for Allen Snider, from the forthcoming Fighting EX Layer (via mysterious0bob)...
Tumblr media
I REALLY wish Fight Zone, a mid-90s UFC rip-off) had lasted long enough to at least spawn a really bad tie-in video game for the Jaguar CD (or Nuon via lordmo & lordmo again)...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Forget dragon punches, forget hurricane kicks, forget fireballs… none are as effective as the most devastating blow of them all: heartbreak (via newkidsonmycock31)...
Tumblr media
For perhaps obvious reasons, I try to avoid anything related to politics, but as someone who is part Korean, this image strikes a serious cord (via basedsatan)...
Tumblr media
It’s funny how I’ve never even come close to thinking about what it'd be like to have a real deal shield from Legend of Zelda, until getting a decent look at one, and then all of a sudden (via retrogamerblog)...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It’s practically summer weather here in NYC, which is the perfect weather for some Flying Power Disc (aka Windjammer) action + related attire... tho going outside & not playing video games is also an idea I guess (via miki800.com)...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I want… no... I need this Astro City shirt from GAMESGLORIOUS (via miki800.com)...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
They also have a Mega Drive shirt featuring some sexy girl, which I’d be more into if it was someone I recognized… like Tyris Flare, Blaze Fielding, or Amy Rose (via @GAMESGLORIOUS)...
Tumblr media
As someone with a brain crammed full of ultra obscure Sega knowledge, I still had zero idea about the existence of their Video Driver system...
youtube
Meanwhile, did you know that Chuck E. Cheese's origin is grim af? (via @topherflorence)
Tumblr media
A fresh coat of paint always does an indie cab good (especially if it’s been in a DIY space for several years; via @DBAArcade)...
Tumblr media
Cuz it’s been a while since I posted random arcade pics (via duchamp-is-innocent)...
Tumblr media
It’s Virtua Fighter 1, 2, and 3 (well, technically, it’s 3, 2, and then 1; via gaijira)...
Tumblr media
Not sure what the games are in this instance (the one on the right is something for the Neo Geo, that’s all I know; via b0mbass)...
Tumblr media
"vaporwave arcade" (via alext)...
Tumblr media
Hey, arcades in the US can be pleasing to the eye as well, make no mistake (via sadboyxclique)...
Tumblr media
That feeling you get when you come across an assortment of arcade machines, and you realize The Simpsons is included (via gamefreaksnz)...
Tumblr media
Nothing fills me with such unbridled joy like arcade pics circa the early 80s (via retropopcult)...
Tumblr media
Another snapshot from the golden age of gaming in the United States (via tvgame)...
Tumblr media
Meanwhile in Japan; Space Invaders was insanely popular everywhere, including the US, but in its homeland, it was on a whole different level (via videogamesdensetsu)...
Tumblr media
I’m a sucker for any “detailed” interpretation of what the Space Invaders look like… I also love buttons based upon shmups (via miki800)...
Tumblr media
Not that anyone has asked, but if I had to choose my fave shmup ship design, I would have to the SA-77 from Silpheed...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
... That last image is from videogamesdensetsu, BTW/FYI. Also BTW/FYI: my affinity for Silpheed's SA-77 naturally means that I wouldn't mind a miniature replica on my toy shelf.
Like this one (via my homepage, fort90.com)...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Or this one (via dannychoo.com)...
Tumblr media
Am not as into the SA-08, aka the ship from the very first Silpheed (the Sega/Mega CD version is actually a remake), yet this model is neat nonetheless (via @musuke_twit)...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Revisiting that old blog post of mine, to get that Silpheed model pic, reminded me of others based upon Radiant Silvergun & Ikaruga that I’d also love to get my grubby mitts on...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I also still need to get my hands on this transformable Vic Viper from Zone of the Enders, even if I’ve never been super fond of its ship form (a moot point given how I’d probably keep it in its mecha form; via zakgaigar)...
Tumblr media
I believe I’ve highlighted this R-Type kit not all that long ago, but when you repost pics as much as I do, it’s easy to lose track (via shmups)...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So all the pics above, of ships that soar among the stars, engaging in wars, were all tweeted on a single day. May the 4th to be exact, due to the fact that I didn't have anything directly related to Star Wars Day handy. With this Star Fox gif being the most popular of the bunch (which again I might have shared already once, a long time ago; via k-eke)...
Tumblr media
This past Friday also marked the grand re-opening of The Rodney Shop!
Tumblr media
And also making a grand return was the man who redefined what's musically possible on a Game Boy, who came back to redefine what's musically possible on... a calculator? (via @Nullsleep)
Tumblr media
Time for a bonus track: if there was an adaptation of the film Escape From New York on the MSX-2, this is what it would sound like...
youtube
Please enjoy this pic of a Super Nintendo controller covered in vaseline for whatever reason (via kotaku.com)...
Tumblr media
And last but not least, a question: is there enough background info on the game Alien Solider to justify a near 20-minute video? The answer: yes...
