Mire Lee (b. 1988 in Seoul; lives and works between Amsterdam and Seoul)
Untitled (My Pittsburgh Sculpture), 2022
metal, silicone oil, resin, dosing pumps, steel wire ropes, barbed wire, and other mixed media
Commissioned by Carnegie Museum of Art for the 58th Carnegie International
Mire Lee employs more robust sculptural materials such as metal, plaster, and concrete alongside glycerin, silicone, and various types of resin, which are often animated by electric motors and pumps. The artist's works sometimes recall the internal systems of the human body — its organ functions, convulsions, failures, fluids, and excretions as a way of probing the depths and outer limits of human behavior and the psyche.
The centerpiece of Lee's new sculpture is a steel and glass decagonal form that contains flexible, kinetic components turning in a viscous fluid. Here, soft internal elements become entangled with each other and come into contact with hard, unforgiving materials. An extension of the artist's exploration of pain, this commission connects with the machinations set in motion in Lee's prior works that mine a vocabulary of the ugly, neglected, strained, vulnerable, and leaky. In this dark sublime, the artist seeks generative and redemptive lessons. She observes: "I've always seen heart-wrenching things as beautiful…. I do not believe we can eliminate violence or toxicity in its entirety from the world, but we can develop responses other than disgust or withdrawal." Taking one step further, Lee asks how we might come to understand and make something of pain, violence, or injustice that is compounded, knotted up, and which has no single source or cause.

HCM 1143Research Paper The paper for HCM 1143 is to view one of the movies listed below and write a research paper on an aspect of the film related to healthcare administration. Movies The DoctorPatch AdamsOne Flew Over The Cuckoo’s NestArticle 99Something the Lord madeJohn QAnd the Band Played on Other Movie With Prior Instructor Approval PAPER Title should mention Movie nameYou will write a research paper on a problem or solution in healthcare administration. Write a brief introduction summarizing the movie. Make certain to point out the central conflict or problem related to healthcare. Your thesis statement is related to Healthcare Administration – How it was part of the problem, what it could do to fix the problem, etc. Required aspects are highlighted.• Please do not just summarize the movie; that will result in a very low grade. Relate the movie to Healthcare Administration. This can be to identify, clarify, and /or solve a problem in healthcare related to the content• A clear thesis is necessary. Be sure to state clearly the main point and make sure that all your research and supporting points back it up.• Address the entity(s) able to provide a remedy for the scenario whether regulatory, managerial, or in other ways.• As a general rule, when I say you must do a thorough exploration of the topic, that means that someone reading your paper who is unfamiliar with the topic does not finish with unanswered questions and a greater understanding of your original thoughts, backed by research.• Papers that are not researched are based on opinion, and if you could rely on what you knew before taking a class, why would you need an education?• All text is to be double-spaced, 12 point font, Times New Roman.• Plagiarism is NOT tolerated. If you use more than a few words from the text (or another source) you MUST cite using quotation marks and appropriate in-text citations in APA style.• Most of the information in written assignments can be summarized in your own words. Be careful to note, when you use data or statistics, it MUST be cited. Otherwise, I am to assume you came up with that information on your own.• There should be both in text citations and a bibliography• Your citations may be limited, but you must have at least three credible sources, plus the citation for the movie itself. You must cite the movie. The strongest papers will back up the fictional concepts with real life, cited examples and other relevant cited information.• Keep scrolling down to view correct citation information for a textbook. • There is no length requirement, but the fullness of the topic must be explained. A good rule of thumb is at least 3-4 pages of content, not counting title and bibliography.Clearly, if your introduction takes a full page, your points cannot be proven in only a few paragraphs in order to be considered thorough. See the paper template for more guidance• PROOFREAD Once you finish, edit to make sure your sentences make sense and are grammatically correct. **Hi mbti-notes! I’m an INFJ. I wanted to ask you about something I’ve noticed in myself in hopes that you might have insight or advice to offer. I read your information about learning and study as well as perfectionism. I do believe perfectionism is at play here, but I get the feeling there’s more. Do you think this is type related? Is it just plain ol’ misuse of Ni and Ni-Se imbalance? When it comes to lengthier college assignments (especially papers), I have an ineffective way of attempting
[con’t: the assignment. I know that I need to break it into smaller pieces in order to do it, which I do. But, as I go along, once I get to a point where I’ve written a decent bit, I get stuck. I feel completely clueless as to how to synthesize, sort through, and structure my work, which I need to do to go forward. Then, I start to freak out. I get overwhelmed by having no idea if all of what I’m writing is tying together, coherent, flowing, making sense, following the directions as a whole. I seem to be incapable of identifying the next step, focusing on that one step, and completing it.
Part of it is kind of like I can’t get out of aerial view, almost. It seems my natural way of approaching writing is trying to revise, edit and organize *as* I’m writing, which, of course, is impossible and completely destroys my ability to write. This is something I really want to change, because I believe I have potential to contribute something valuable to the world through my writing. I won’t be able to do that if I continue this harmful approach. Reflecting, I notice some other ways this issue seems to crop up in my life, too? When drawing, I’ve made messy attempts to sketch, ink and color all in the same sitting instead of going step by step through sketching, finishing that, then starting to ink (repeat), etc. Thoughts? Thank you!]
I see two issues that need to be examined:
1) Poor Organization Ability & Lack of Clear Objective: The ability to organize ideas requires development of your judging functions, especially Ti. Ti allows you to take Ni ideas and put them into a tight organizational model or framework. Since Ti is a lower function and tiring/difficult to use, it is often good to use Fe to find an existing “template” that you can modify for your purposes. This could be something as simple as learning how to create a detailed outline for an essay, or learning (from experts) the most effective techniques or procedures for what you want to achieve.
It seems that you often begin an assignment without a clear idea about the objective or what you want to express or argue. For example, when you’re writing an essay, you should BEGIN with a thesis statement and then proceed to construct an argument to support it. However, many students just start writing down their thoughts without knowing where it should go, and hope to eventually arrive at a thesis statement, at some point. This kind of mental organization ability is more commonly referred to as critical thinking ability. Thus, it seems that you need to spend more time explicitly improving your critical thinking skills. I have recommended books about it on the resources page.
2) Perfectionism: This is a problem when you start to feel anxious about not being able to complete a work to your ideal expectations. Anxiety is mentally draining. It takes energy away from focus and motivation. It may even lead to procrastination. Combat perfectionism by breaking the work process down into two distinct stages:
The first stage of your work should be the “creativity” stage, where you can just do whatever you like, explore whatever ideas you want, write whatever comes out, etc. This allows you the space and freedom to develop ideas to a more mature state. Then you won’t cut off promising directions before they even get going.
The second stage of your work should be the “refinement” stage, where you apply your critical thinking and organization skill to refine what you want the work to look like. You keep refining until you are satisfied enough to let it go. Sometimes, you may even want to redo the whole darn thing because, through the process of refinement, you’ve become armed with more knowledge and skill than when you started.
To allow enough time for you to properly get through both stages of work, you have to also manage your time well. Get started on assignments earlier so that you don’t feel too pressured to end the first stage prematurely. If you have trouble with that, then perhaps you should also work on your time management skills. INFJs, being J, don’t generally have trouble with time management, as long as they can keep emotional obstacles like anxiety or perfectionism in check.

The Trial of the Chicago 7 (Or, Sorkin’s attempt to show you how nothing has changed in 52 years)
If you know anything about Aaron Sorkin, the much-acclaimed writer/creator of television shows like The West Wing, The Newsroom, you know that subtlety is not his strong suit. So, I was rather hesitant going into his newest film, The Trial of the Chicago 7, the infamous trial of eight gentlemen accused of conspiracy to incite violence/rioting in Chicago during the notorious 1968 DNC riots. Without diving too deep into the history, August 1968 was not Chicago’s finest hour. When the protesters chanted as a warning to the police, “The Whole World Is Watching!”, they weren’t wrong. Years ahead of the 24-hour news cycle, people all across America (and across the world) were glued to the TV watching the Chicago police beat the ever-living snot out of young folks protesting the Democratic Party’s decision to support the ever-controversial war in Vietnam. The film’s subject matter is sure to draw parallels to and resonate strongly with both the protests and civil unrest that took place this past summer following the death of George Floyd and countless other Black folk at the hands of police. So despite it’s appropriate timeliness, I was hesitant to watch this movie because I really wasn’t interested in watching Aaron Sorkin (who not only wrote but directed this film) try to mansplain to me that the trial of the Chicago 7 was all about injustice! Without knowing anything else about the trial beforehand (and I really didn’t), I already knew it’s a famous case of injustice. I wanted to watch the movie to learn about the people, the humans involved, and the nuance of the situation.
The film gets off to a rough start in the nuance department. After an effective montage introducing us to six of the eight members of the Chicago 7 (we’ll get to why there’s that numerical discrepancy), we meet the character who will be the lead prosecutor of the case: a straight-laced, clean-cut lawyer played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt. In an attempt to plant the seed early on that the eponymous trial is a sham, the first real scene of the film sees Gordon-Levitt meeting with Nixon’s newly appointment Attorney General John Mitchell who is pissed off that the prior AG didn’t resign from the office until an hour before Mitchell was confirmed. As retaliation, and in line with history’s understanding of Nixon’s pathologic paranoia, Mitchell decides to re-open the case exploring whether there was any conspiracy to incite riots in Chicago 1968. As JGL explains, this was something which Johnson’s AG as well as prior FBI investigations already decided did was not a viable case. The conversation that ensues is a little too on-the-nose. JGL shares his concerns that he doesn’t believe that the Chicago 7 are actually guilty, but Mitchell tells JGL, “then imagine how impressed I’ll be when you get a conviction.”
Of course, this conversation is largely a Sorkin invention, as is the weird decision to try to humanize the prosecutor played by Gordon-Levitt. I say "weird" because the film doesn’t do anything with it. We don’t get a real sense beyond that initial scene that JGL feels guilt or remorse for being a cog in the Nixon machine. The beginning of the film sets him up to be a similar character to David Schwimmer’s fascinating turn as Robert Kardashian in The People vs. O.J. Simpson. But in the end, it’s clear that Sorkin uses him just as a way in the beginning of the film to provide the thesis statement for the film, as if he were writing this script as a college term paper. This bothers me so much because it makes a late-film surprise appearance by Michael Keaton as Johnson’s AG lose a good deal of its impact. It would have been so much better if we as the audience came to the same revelation about the political origin of the trial at the same time that the defense lawyers did.
Sorkin’s lack of subtlety reared its ugly head in a few key moments that caused me to audibly groan while watching this film. Towards the end of the film, one of the more dramatic defendants, the merry prankster hippie Abbie Hoffman (played very well by Sacha Baron Cohen), is on the stand and is asked a particularly difficult question by the prosecution. He pauses. The prosecution asks what’s taking so long. Hoffman responds in a serious tone that runs opposite of his usual character, “Sorry, I’ve never been on trial for my thoughts before.” The film then slowly fades to black. I half-expected to hear the famous Law & Order “chun-chunn” sound next. That’s how cheesy and self-righteous the scene was.
The film’s ending too, where the defendants read off a list of all the fallen soldiers from Vietnam prior to their sentencing, felt a little too Hollywood to be believable… and indeed it didn’t happen that way. Elsewhere in the film, one of the more “prim and proper” defendants, the young head of the Students for a Democratic Society Thomas Hayden played by Eddie Redmayne, reflexively stands in honor of the judge’s exit as is court custom, forgetting that he and the rest of the defendants agreed not to stand. That’s not the bad part. The bad part comes later when Redmayne’s character travels to someone’s home and the Black maid who answers the door says to him, “I heard you were the only one to stand for the judge,” and then the camera just sorta lingers on her disappointment. We get it! The judge is a bad dude! Let’s move on!
Seriously, let’s move on. For all my griping, this is a very good movie. Those instances where Sorkin’s moral heavy-handedness is plain to see are so glaring because for the most part, the movie does a fantastic job of addressing the film’s (sadly still) politically controversial themes (police brutality, the culpability of protesters in starting riots, systemic racism, etc.) with a good deal of nuance. This mostly happens when Sorkin just sticks to the facts of the case, like when dealing with the whole saga of Bobby Seale, the eighth and only Black man of the Chicago 7. The day before the trial begins, Seale's lawyer required emergent surgery. Seale’s motion to have the trial postponed till he receive proper counsel is denied, as is his request to represent himself. Therefore, on trial without counsel, he frequently interrupts the court arguing about the unconstitutional nature of his trial, until the judge, played to chilling perfection by Frank Langella, becomes fed up with the interruptions and orders that Seale be bound, gagged, and chained to his chair. It’s a crazy powerful and uncomfortable scene, among the most haunting images I’ve seen in cinema. Finally, Seale’s case is determined to be a mistrial, changing the number of defendants from eight to seven. Hence, the Chicago 7.
But, the most inspired sequence of the film comes late in the movie when the defense gets wind of the prosecution’s plan to play a recording from the night of the riots where the prim and proper Tom Hayden can be (arguably) heard urging hundreds of listeners to “let blood flow all over the city.” Tom still believes that he would do well on the witness stand, but his defense lawyer (Mark Rylance as William Kuntsler) insists on showing him why this would be a bad idea. The ensuing scene sees Rylance role play the part of the prosecution cross-examining Hayden while the film intercuts scenes of a flashback of the actual events. the “truth” of that night, significantly muddies the water for this case. It by no means proves that the Chicago 7 are guilty of a conspiracy, but it certainly highlights the more human aspect of their situation. How is one expected to keep their calm when their best friend is beaten? And to what degree are people to be held responsible for decisions made in the heat of the moment?
The movie also has also interesting commentary on who should be the “face” or progressive politics, even today: the well-to-do and respectable Hayden or the in-your-face hippie comedian Hoffman? It’s an interesting question that never seems fully explored or resolved. Sorkin seems to land in the camp that Hayden’s respectability merely maintains status quo whereas Hoffman’s flagrant anti-establishment views is required for real change. But I don’t know how much of that is me just loving Cohen’s performance as Hoffman and finding Redmayne’s Hayden to be (appropriately) insufferably pretentious. Sorkin certainly gives Cohen the better lines.
Overall, this is a movie held up by its two primary strengths: its cast and its film structure. Aside from general inconsistencies of the script’s tone and the notable weakness I mentioned previously about overplaying the political motivation for the trial in the film's first 5 minutes, the film is nearly perfectly structured. We are sort of dropped in medias res into the trial and only get the facts of those few days shown to us in carefully placed flashbacks that help to flesh out the drama of the trial. It helps maintain pacing in what could have been a drag of a legal drama.
But really, it’s the cast and their performances that sell this movie. Sacha Baron Cohen is the star in my mind, so perfectly cast as Abbie Hoffman, but Frank Langella as the septuagenarian, prejudiced judge of the case is equally powerful. Yahya Abdul-Manteen II as the Black Panther Bobby Seale lends an air of desperate seriousness to the film, Eddie Redmayne shines as that white liberal dude who takes himself way too seriously, and Mark Rylance is wonderful as the courageous lead defense attorney, particularly in scenes dealing with Bobby Seale. While the whole trial weighs on him heavily as the film progresses, his genuine concern for Seale is palpable.
I spent much of this review telling you the things that were odd about this film, and I stand by that. But as I said, those things stand out because this is such a slick production that the cracks become that much more obvious. It largely avoids Sorkin’s penchant for blunt lack of nuance and offers a story that helps to greatly contextualize the very world we live in. It’s interesting that a story that sees ten men (including their lawyers) fail to win a fight against The Man still feels like an inspiring underdog tale. It resonated well with this viewer, especially as the ending makes clear that justice is eventually served. Yet, I recognize this may be a dangerous tale to tell these days, and why I think the movie is so successful is that it gives plenty of sobering evidence to suggest that justice (both then and now) is by no means guaranteed.

EAPP READING RECORD ALTHEA CASSEY B. SAGARIO 11- ABM3
In Unit 1, what I learned about the Structure of Academic Texts is how to identify the structure of paragraphs, essays, and research papers. Also, there are 3 parts of the paragraph the topic sentence, supporting sentences, concluding and/or transitional sentence, and the different patterns as well the illustration, definition, clarification, comparison and contrast, and process. Furthermore, there are also 3 types of essays the Introduction, Body, and Conclusion, as well as I learned about the best way to identify the main idea in a three-part-essay the INRad stands for Introduction, Methods, Results, and Discussion, with a Conclusion, this usually used for academic texts and research paper it's intended for discussing the research topic at hand to explain the topic and it's intended purpose.
In Unit 2 the lesson we talk about is all about the Thesis statement and Outlining Academic Texts. What I understood in this lesson is that the Thesis Statement is you will usually write an introductory paragraph first in most academic papers. Thereafter, is to state your point of view on the topic, and usually done in one sentence in this one sentence is called the “Thesis Sentence”, and the goal and flow of your statements in the rest of your paper are to dictate to your main idea. Furthermore, there are 6 questions to make a Thesis Statement expressed appropriately, first, Am I answering the question? second, Have I taken a position that can possibly be disputed by others? third, Is my thesis statement specific enough? fourth, Does my thesis statement pass the “So what” test? fifth, Does the rest of my essay specifically and concretely support my thesis statement?, these particular questions can help you to build a correct Thesis Statement.
Outlining Academic Texts is one of the last steps of the prewriting phase is establishing an outline. It assists the writers to classify and organize the main idea of the topic, paragraphs to make understanding, and assure that the paragraph is fully developed.  Eventually, helps the writer to not get stuck while he/she is writing an essay is an outline acts as a blueprint or a map. Besides, there are two types of outlines: a topic outline and a sentence outline. A Topic Outline only phrases or main ideas are required, also utilizes wording that is parallel to one another. A heading or subheading should not divide into one part only; if there is a concept under “A,” they must be a “B,” if there is “1,” there must be a “2.” In Sentence Outline it's utilized phrases, sentence outline makes use of sentences unlike the topic outline, headings, and subheadings must be in sentence form and lesser need to have parallelism but it cannot be divided into one part only; the same concept or divisions per heading should still be followed.
Unit 3 lesson is Writing a Summary and Techniques in Summarizing Texts. Summarizing a text is clarifying its essential concepts in a paragraph or two, summary has two goals: simulate the key ideas and points of the text and express these concepts and ideas with detailed and specific language. When writing a summary u need to change the world without changing the meaning and there are techniques to prepare for writing a summary the previewing, skimming, and scanning. To distinguish which part to include in the summary, the following are; your purpose for summarizing the text, and your view on what is essential in the text. In Techniques in Summarizing Texts what I learned is, summarizing a text means establishing a coherent compressed paragraph about a distinct topic or concept. There are two aims in summarizing texts: to reproduce the overarching ideas of a text to specify the general concepts and to express the overarching ideas of a text using detailed language. Lastly, I also understood the 9 Steps in Summarizing Texts: first, once you read a text you can now identify and comprise the title and author, second, include the author's thesis statement in the first two sentences, third, write one or two sentences per main ideas before summarizing the entirety. Write one or two sentences per main concept or suggestion in a text, fourth, recall to omit the details that are not significant; there is no need to go into the minor and supporting details of the text, fifth, avert writing additional opinions about the text, sixth, avoid plagiarism of the author’s work. Comprise quotations if you are rapidly quoting the writer.
In Unit 4 the lesson we discuss is about What is Paraphrasing, and Techniques in Paraphrasing Texts. What I have learned is that paraphrasing is a restatement of a text, passage, or work articulating the meaning in another aspect, a good paraphrase shows how well a writer understood the reading materials. Moreover, there are two factors of a good paraphrase: first, the paraphrase relays the information, from the source in-text in your own words, and the paraphrase oversees the readers to the source of the information. As well as, the two guidelines on when to paraphrase, the first is to use a paraphrase with short texts with one or two sentences or a paragraph with five sentences, the other one is when you want to underestimate direct quotation or rewrite the author’s word utilizing your own, without changing the meaning of the source text use a paraphrase.  In paraphrasing by Changing Word, the way is to change the words in the statement while keeping the original thought of the text, furthermore, Changing a Part of Speech usually nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs can be written into various types of speech. The techniques in paraphrasing texts is to specify which words can be changed and the form they could be changed into, whether it is a noun into a verb, adjective into an adverb, etc, rewrite the sentence or passage modifying to the change in part of speech, check if the original and paraphrased sentences are related in meaning.
In Unit 5 Citing of information Lesson 1: Different Citation Style and Lesson 2: Writing a Bibliography. What I learned in lesson 1 is a citation is a way to give credit to the authors, scientists, researchers, and more. Citation conveniently locates particular sources and helps avoid plagiarism as well, furthermore, the citation includes the author’s name, date of publication, location of the publication, company, journal title, and DOI (Digital Object Identifier). Besides, there is a citation style, a citation style dictates what information is necessary to include in a citation, how that should be organized, what punctuations are used, and more. There are 3 different styles of citation, the APA(American Physiological Association) is used in education, psychology, and social sciences, MLA(Modern Language Association) is normally used in humanities, and Chicago/Turabian style is often used in business, history, and fine arts. Lesson 2 is all about Bibliography, list all of the sources you used for your research and additional background reading, it's included also in the bibliography if you borrowed work as an inspiration or as a purpose for your arguments, thesis, evidence, and the like, even if you didn't actively relate to them in your paper. Furthermore, a Bibliography in APA citation style has a particular formatting guide for your bibliography or references list. In Bibliography in MLA the reference list is pertained to as the works cited page, the title “Works Cited” is also included, capitalized, and centered at the outset of the page. In  Bibliography in Chicago/Turabian citation style, a bibliography is usually used, meaning that all of the works you used in your research are included.

Thesis Writing Assistance
Students who are struggling with writg their Thesis in have the option to either take outside assistance to complete their paper or, if they prefer, seek thesis writing assistance from within. There are several professionals that offer thesis assistance and even workshops to help students find their style and develop their own unique research method. Thesis writers are often hired after the thesis is written so the students have time to become acquainted with their work before they begin it.
Students can seek assistance from their instructors, they may also hire someone to personally write your thesis for you may want to receive some additional assistance with the organization of the thesis. This is also quite common problem among thesis holders. With thesis writing help, they can obtain some much needed support with the organization of their thesis. Some services that are offered include proofreading, editing, and even plagiarism checking. This is usually an aspect of the assignment that students are not familiar with and seeking thesis writing help can often solve this problem.
Students can choose to use a professional writing services to aid them with their Thesis, or they can do it on their own. If a student wishes to do it themselves, first they will need to do some research into resources that will be needed to succeed in this task. They should gather together all their required information, which should include their thesis statement, names of any people who will give input, a summary of the information, etc. A rough draft should be completed and then it can be sent out to a professional writing service. The deadline for receiving feedback on the draft is usually around 4 weeks. A complete example of a complete thesis writing assistance plan can be viewed at the link below.
Students who wish to use a professional thesis writing assistance service have a few things to consider before beginning such a project. One is the level of education that they have attained. Professors and other professors at colleges and universities are often very good at critiquing and suggesting ways to better ones work. This process can take months or even years and students may not have the patience to sit in on one more class before their Thesis is completed. Another is if the individual is attempting to use their own skills and knowledge to write their Thesis. Sometimes the student may lack the ability to utilize computer software, excel, or other tools that will be necessary for them to succeed.
Professional thesis writing assistance companies specialize in helping students attain Thesis success. Most will have a large database of students who have completed their Thesis and are now working towards getting their Ph.D. Most will also offer tutoring services, which will require a student to meet a minimum number of writing hours each week. There are some students that just need more personal attention from tutors. Some individuals simply need more encouragement to continue with their studies. These students usually find it more beneficial to meet with a thesis writer who will have them work on the topics that they need help in writing. Know more about us.
Most professional thesis writing help companies will provide students with templates and outlines that can be used for the completion of Thesis. There are also many examples of Thesis that can be found on the company's website. These examples can be used as a guide to help new writers with their research. The samples will allow the students to see what they are accomplishing with their research before spending money on an expensive thesis paper.
Students that are looking to use thesis writing services will often discover that they need to pay a little bit more than what most people think. This is because there are more complex facets of completing Thesis than most writers realize. Most students expect to merely complete the research, write a few pages of an essay and submit their Thesis to a publisher or academic levels. However, it is much more involved than that and writers that are not familiar with academic levels should consider using the services of professionals to help them complete their Thesis.
Students should make sure that they are choosing a reputable thesis writing service that offers high quality products. The process of writing Thesis can be a complicated one and should be left to professionals to help make it easier. The topics and information that are covered in each paper should be well organized and referenced properly. The thesis abstract should be written in such a way that will allow the student to share their information with others. All of these elements should be taken into consideration when choosing the right company for thesis research assistance. Students can learn more about their options by doing research online.

TMFU, Gaby’s fashion, and some feminist film analysis
Back when I slapped together a reblog post about the men’s fashion in The Man From UNCLE in between physio appointments, which somehow got like way more notes than I ever really expected or even wanted, I didn’t address the fashion of the lead female character, Gaby. It was outside the scope of the OP, and I didn’t feel like I had anything new or interesting to say about Gaby’s fashion, or lack thereof.
Tumblr media
(My beta says those earrings are the ugliest thing ever. I disagree. It’s a wonder we’re still friends)
Anyways, we see only one brief scene of Gaby in her own street clothes, and a slightly longer sequence of her in her work clothes. The rest of the film, she is wearing clothes chosen for her by Illya. Saying “we just don’t have enough info” is a perfectly reasonable approach to this. So this was the other reason I had no intention of making this post.
Tumblr media
But then people started getting interested. Someone reblogged commenting about Gaby’s fashion, and I discovered that I have very strong opinions about something I’d previously claimed was unknowable, and it made me wonder what was going on in my brain.
Then I talked to some other TMFU friends who all seemed interested in what I assumed was common knowledge/nothing unique. So, they may have been feigning interest out of politeness, but it activated the art history side of my brain, and here we are now!
The boring stuff but please read this
I am not attempting to tell anyone how to interpret this film. I am not even trying to change people’s minds or persuade them to my thinking. All I am doing is sharing my thought process. I wasn’t even going to do this for Gaby until people asked. To this end, please don’t attempt to argue with me about this. I don’t want to argue. I won’t respond to it. If you disagree, then please, just move along.
And I’m going to remind people that I love TMFU. I love this movie so much it hurts. Why am I putting this reminder here? Because I am about to apply some critical analysis to it, and in places this will be cynical, and it will not always look kindly on the film. If you just want to exist in a happy “I love TMFU!” bubble and not hear anything less than 100% positive about the film (which is a totally valid choice, I don’t fault anyone for that), then don’t read. But don’t yell at me for being mean or criticizing the film, because I warned you.
Tldr; or, if I were still being graded for this stuff here’s my thesis statement
When analysing Gaby’s fashion, there exist considerations which don’t apply to the male characters. Namely, she is a woman and the male gaze is a thing. So I am very, very wary about taking at  face value any expressions of traditional femininity in the choices made  for her outfits, hair, makeup, etc. Therefore, when considering her character, I find it much more useful and informative to give more weight to the aspects of her appearance which do not connote traditional femininity, rather than those that do.
For readers who have studied enough  media analysis to follow my thought based on that alone, there’s the thesis statement, y’all can go home (or at least skip to the end where I come to a conclusion). If you’re lost, then read on.
(mobile readers, the cut here might not work, and if so I apologize for what is going to be a very long post. Tumblr’s “keep reading” functionality is inconsistent at best, but I tried)
Context is for kings essential for analysing media in a meaningful way
(Or, some brief background. Stick with me here, we’ll get to the good stuff soon)
So, art doesn’t exist in a vacuum. Attempting to analyze any artwork (in this case a film) while disregarding the culture it was created in and the intentions of the creator is...not going to get you very far. Asking “what is art” is a question that quite frankly exhausts me at this point (looking at you, Duchamp) but the closest I’ve ever come to an answer is that the only thing that separates art from everything else is intent. And intention only exists within cultural context. So yes, intent and context don’t just matter peripherally, they are one of the biggest considerations one needs to make when analyzing works of art. The creator in this case being Guy Ritchie et al, the culture being British/American Popular Cinema in The Year of Somebody’s Lord Two-Thousand-And-Fifteen.
Everyone views and creates (if applicable) art through their own distorted, murky, imperfect lens of personal experience. And one of the most persistent Things in western art is that cishet men create art based on their experience of Being A Dude. This is crucial, because this lens of cishet male perspective literally underpins almost all of western culture including popular culture. And thanks to feminist film theorist Laura Mulvey, we have a name for this.
The male gaze and you
I’m going to quote Wikipedia here, because honestly this intro sentence sums things up rather neatly (with one exception which I will address momentarily).
In feminist theory, the male gaze is the act of depicting women and the world, in the visual arts and literature, from a masculine, heterosexual perspective that presents and represents women as sexual objects for the pleasure of the male viewer.
What does that all mean? That the Viewer and the Artist are both cishet men by default, and any women are Subjects of art. Women are viewed, never viewers. Men take action, women are subjected to actions. Furthermore, women are supposed to be pleasurable to view. By men. Since the Viewer is male by default.
But I would disagree that the pleasure is inherently based on women being sexual objects. That’s honestly a really damn limited read on the whole theory, and it’s one that Wikipedia itself contradicts later in the article. More broadly, cis men also derive other forms of pleasure from the presentation and viewing of female bodies, including aesthetic pleasure (the enjoyment of looking at beautiful things).
The theory of the male gaze is not without limits. As originally theorized, afaik it’s not particularly intersectional. It doesn’t really address queer perspectives or perspectives of POC. However, these issues are something I just can’t address here, unfortunately. And when looking at popular media, I still find the concept of the male gaze, imperfect as it may be, is a helpful means of analysis, so it’s worth having in your toolbox.
Circling back, the easiest way to sum up the male gaze, if you’re still not super clear on what it is, is with a demonstration.
Ever seen a shot like this in a movie?
Tumblr media
And did you immediately roll your eyes? Feel gross? Congrats, you have just perceived and reacted to the male gaze.
Now we actually get back to TMFU
But the male gaze also shows up in many more subtle, insidious ways than fanservice-y boob shots. For this post, let’s focus on the following considerations, which might help everyone follow my thought process more clearly.
Gaby is a woman
She functions as the love interest of Illya in the script (I am not talking from a shipping perspective. What you ship does not matter for this discussion. I am talking about the narrative function of Gaby in the script as written. Put on your “cishet man” goggles for a moment)
Illya is a man who is attracted to women, specifically Gaby (again, I don’t care if your shipping conflicts with this. I am analyzing the film based on a literal reading of it as if I were a cishet man. Why? Because that’s who made the film. That’s who it’s “for”. I am all for queer readings of film--hell, I ship OT3, I myself have chosen a queer reading for how I interact with it, but I’m not critiquing people’s readings, I’m critiquing the film itself and to do that I have to critique its intentions and cultural context.)
Cishet men are traditionally only allowed to be attracted to women who are conventionally attractive. If they were to be attracted to anyone else it would destroy their fragile senses of self and their heads would explode or something. At least I assume that’s what must happen, based on how terrified they are of it.
Therefore, Gaby must be conventionally attractive, because it is literally required of her or otherwise the whole underpinning of western straight malehood crumbles and then where would we get such a pure, vast source of unadulterated toxic masculinity?
Tumblr media
(Yes, this is a very cynical read on things. I’ve studied, like, three centuries worth of this bullshit. I’m tired. Let me be cynical.)
Or, to force myself to be less cynical, Gaby has to be pretty because...nope, this is still going to turn out just as cynical.
But what I will say in favour of this movie is that it gives Gaby and Victoria both a lot of agency and general awesomeness, which is quite unusual in this sort of big-budget action film, and it’s one of the big reasons I love it. I’m not saying that the entire film is sexist. On the contrary, there’s a ton of stuff to celebrate about how it portrays its female characters. But these aspects don’t change the cultural context, and we still have to consider the impacts of the male gaze.
Anyways, point being is that as filtered through the male gaze, Gaby is never given the option to, say, wear no makeup (or the appearance of such, as the guys are afforded, this being cinema where “no makeup” still means makeup) because that would look “ugly”.  Instead she needs to have a “baseline of pretty” which is way higher than reality because she is not a real human being with her own agency, she is a character created by a cis male writer/director team in a film directed by a cis man in a genre that caters to cishet men.
Gaby doesn’t exist in a vacuum. She exists battling centuries and centuries worth of sexist convention.
Now then, remembering all of that, let’s actually look at her. There are woefully few good pictures so I’m going to have to piece things together a little. Starting with the coveralls.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is a great look, I love it. And I’m going to give Ritchie a lot of credit here because it would’ve been easy to go for a “Michelle Rodriguez in F&F sexy mechanic lady” look. In case I need to provide a visual:
Tumblr media
(Repeat above gif about rolling my eyes)
Now, to be clear, I am not making any judgement about the way any real-life women dress. I’m sure there’s plenty of female mechanics who have their hair down and wear tank tops while working. That doesn’t bother me. I don’t care if real life mechanics choose to do their jobs in a string bikini. Or in cosplay of the bee from Bee Movie. I don’t care (and quite frankly it’s none of my business) because they are real people who can make their own decisions. But what I am talking about here is a fictional character who does not have her own agency. I am critiquing how male creators choose to dress their female characters.
So I personally choose to read much more into the unpretty  aspects of Gaby’s outfit, because these are not the “obvious” or “easy”   things. Obvious and easy are “of course she wears makeup” and “of course her hair looks good” and  “of course she doesn’t look like a swamp witch  who bathes in mud and spends her days cursing passing men”. Those things don’t challenge or disrupt the assumption that women must look attractive for male consumption.
Gaby’s introduction to us is with her in a pair of grease-stained, baggy coveralls, not wearing any obvious makeup (again, this is cinema, so she is wearing makeup. For cinema the goal posts around “wearing makeup” always need to be moved from where they’d be irl). There’s very little here that screams ‘pretty’. And that is fascinating to me.
I don’t know how deeply Ritchie thought this through when giving final approval to the costume, hair and makeup. But unpretty is not the default here. It’s a choice
Tumblr media
And look at this. This is the stance and dress sense (and socks!) of a woman who does not give a damn about looking good for the male gaze, whether the in-movie gaze of Napoleon, or the implied gaze of the viewer and creator. It’s not ‘pretty’. And this is the only time in the film we see Gaby in her own everyday clothes, as she only escapes East Berlin with the literal clothes on her back.
So how do I think Gaby dresses? I think that for the most part she dresses....like this. Practical. Comfortable. With a few simple touches of things she likes/finds pretty, perhaps, but not with a specific interest in being pretty. She dresses for herself, not for others. And if that isn’t something to aspire to, I don’t know what is.
