For every shadow there's a light source. For Malachia, there's Reina.
The superior villain pair of the show and the highlight of the first season, everyone! I would've kept them secret for a bit longer but my darling @angelsfriendsass did one of their famous crossover pieces showcasing my (until now) server-exclusive Reina so... I guess my hands are tied :P
Here's how the magic happened:
The first thing I did when I set myself to revamp the Angel's Friends plot, was work on Reina and Malachia's role in the story. They're the driving force behind the plot in both the series and the comic, which meant it was crucial to determine what their story would be this time around: what would I keep, what would I change, and what would be tossed out entirely.
I looked into Igor Chimisso's work for Malachia and Reina to better understand his design work (he was a lead character designer for the series). I also looked into their theme songs for inspiration. My research brought me to four key words: light, shadows, opposites, and neutrality. Reina would be searing light, and Malachia would be creeping shadows. The "opposites" and "neutrality" concepts would tie them together and unify their designs.
I love the idea of protagonists seeing themselves mirrored by their antagonists in some way. Reina used to be an angel in the show and Malachia used to be a devil in the comics, so I cemented this into my own canon; they would mirror Raf and Sulfus quite naturally this way.
Malachia's new personality and role as a "creeping shadow" made me choose a variety of greys for him. Being a former devil, his focus on ambiguity and "neutrality" would fit well with him. Reina instead has more polarizing tones, dealing in extremes like the "searing light" she embodies: being a former angel, her line of thought would be more black and white, and this would be reflected in her dress with "opposite" hues.
You can't have a villain duo without complementary concepts, and what better way to represent complementary concepts than with complementary colors? I gave Reina yellow eyes and Malachia purple ones, and included "hints" of each other by adding shades of these colors on their counterpart.
Malachia has ochre accents, a yellowed shirt and bronze skin, very straightforward. Reina has dark magenta accents and her iconic blue hair to tie her to his counterpart. I considered white hair like her young self in the series at first, but it clashed with the dress; I took a page from her adult design and kept her silver bangs to frame her face instead.
Reina's shattered halo pieces are arranged over her head like a crown, a tongue-in-cheek reference to her name ("queen" in spanish) and her position of leadership in Limbo. Malachia instead used his shattered horns to fashion himself a diapason, like the one in the comics. The function of this tool is very different in my rewrite, but I'll keep the specifics to myself for now ;P
Also, I wasn't entirely sure where to include this, but remember how angels are tied to circles and devils to triangles? Reina, Malachia and other neutrals will be tied to a half circle on top of a triangle, kinda like a diamond with a round top. See how many of those you can spot around!
It'll be a long time before they show up in my fic proper, but I still encourage you to keep your eyes open just in case while you read I'll Fly With You. After all, Raf and Sulfus aren't particularly careful or subtle, so who knows what's lurking around the Golden School these days...

if you take off his hood and face masc, there’s a dusty old doll head underneath.
The original body died a long, long time ago.
it was continuously overworking itself and accumulated damage. it was poorly maintained, neglected in most ways it needed to keep it alive.
since the bodys will was taken by its master, that body started and stoped its movement only when ordered so. it was lacking self-regulation, breaking itself to complete its missions and any given tasks. no breathers, no rest, no vacations, no aftercare haha~ it couldn’t even faint or in any way immobilise itself.
for one reason* or other, Reina wasn’t taking proper care of it… for an outsider it would take constant, energy consuming, consistent and delicate work to consciously do what a healthy brain does unconsciously.
* i just don’t think it’d even be on her list of priorities to begin with: to spend so much mental energy on her “tool”.. i think she wouldn’t even like to think he’s *there* to begin with… maybe she could cast a spell on it? give up some of its will or install safety measures
it smelled really bad… the flesh began decomposing
[which again, i don’t think, Reina payed any attention to. she maintained a great distance and avoided his presence as the mere sight of him submerged her in draining combination of guilt and selfhatered. she subconsciously hated him for invoking those feelings and ended up growing blind to everything that related to him, only letting her slave in her sight from a far, to take orders, and report of those orders completed]
His owner finely took notice of the fact, only when he - who was once a living being, was now no longer even corpse …but more of a.. fucked up…. sack of barely connected bones. which, after dragging itself out the of portal, dropped to the ground somewhere far from her.
Since the original body of the enslaved spirit could no longer force-move itself [tho it kept trying to, unsuccessfully, until it was finally ordered to stop] his owner made a new vessel for her to store the soul into. She was probably too used to this situation she got going. doing a quick fix while ignoring the core issue, that the item has rotted completely, and even more so: that she shouldn’t be using said “item” in the first place.
&lastly: if Malachias portrait was returned/freed, the artificially made vessel would collapse, fall apart like a dirt-doll stripped of the cord which bond all of its parts together

What if Malachia is not his actual name?
Bear with me. We know that Malachi was basically Walter White when he was alive. What if Malachia is actually his "artist" name. His criminal alter ego. Cuz let's be honest, why would a middle aged man in 18th century or smthg be called malachia? Even devils don't have such names, like we literally have Miki??
Now, you might say "oh, but everyone calls him that, even angels and devils, it must be his true name" BUT! WHAT IF TWO TRUTHS CAN BE TRUE AT ONCE!!
Angels and devils call all characters based on their true names. However, what if Malachia's true personality is evil chemist?? For example: Walter White is named Walter White. However that's not who he truly is. Walter is Heisenberg, even tho it's not his birth given name. Walter White is Heisenberg's alter ego. What if same conceot can be used for Malachia?? What if Angels do not recognise name of a human, but rather name of their soul? Thing is, most people's soul name is same as their real name, bcz they didn't seperate their personalities. But just as Wakter White did (he was completely different person as Walter. Heisenberg was always there, hiding behind Walter, but Walter was just a mask that Heisenberg sometimes took off) maybe Malachia separated his personalities as well, and so his true name, true personality and true soul was actually Malachia and not his past more human name.
Or maybe it's similiar thing as with darth vader. Darth's real name was obviously Anakin, however that's not who Vader is. Vader is his own person. The only difference is that Malachia gave this name to himself (i mean... It could Reina, she is evil and hot and wears hoods and sexy dresses just like palpatine). So the reason why everyone calls him Malachia is bcz deep down he is Malachia, but that doesn't mean his birth name was that name.
So my theory is... What if Malachia is not his true human name?!?

So she can't easily escape?
She can’t. Even in canon, without her powers Reina is helpless. At least in my opinion. And in this AU she’s just gonna get progressively weaker and weaker physically. So she can’t just escape from her bedroom window which is on the second or third floor
I also made this quick sketch of a vision I’ve had in my head for a long time. Malachia let her look in the mirror because why wouldn’t he? Her eyebrows are starting to grow back and those marks or whatever, are fading away. nice. Just reminds me of how much I love this au

Golden dandelions
I have a headcanon that Reina, when she was younger, would often go to a field of dandelions to think. She would reminisce on her feelings towards Malachia, in her heart wishing they could be together. After her escape from jail Reina wanted to visit this place again, only now with him

Reina's reaction to Malachia's death was underwelming. And Raf just accepting Malachia was her father and coming to terms with his death right after? Yea, they had to wrap up the season, but they could have at least mentioned him somewhere in season 2 (like in the context of his comatose psychic wife).

Raf has a Darth Vaden funko pop by her bed. Coincidence or forshadowing?
I’m not sure where you saw the funko pop, but I’ll take your word for it
I don't know, maybe the creators thought that the Vader funko pop could serve as a smart foreshadowing. But if they did, it would be because they also didn't have any idea about what was going on in their own story
Personally, I’d say it’s a stretch. Because neither Malachia nor Raf knew that they were biologically related. Raf’s adoptive parents weren’t hiding the fact that she’s adopted in order to protect her, but because they were just shady. And they were obviously participating in the big cover-up. (what were they all covering up? in short: the fact of Malachia’s existence)
And Reina was the one manipulating and using everybody for her own selfish reasons. While being completely aware that Malachia had a family and was Raf’s real dad

CabKab might be the healthiest ship in the show. Giki in third or fourth place. Still beats out Ralphus by a long shot.
I'd say Ralphus would fare better in the contest for most toxic ship, but there it would lose immediatly to Reilachia.
I like the names for these ships, they are kinda funny. And your ranking is on point. I think, Reina and Malachia are probably the most toxic couple in TV history

since it's V day, any romantic headcanons?
happy Valentine’s day! Here are some of my awful headcanons:
♡ Malachia loves Reina so much that he would kill for her and die for her. Oh wait. It’s not a headcanon, it’s just a fact
♡ Cabiria and Kabale are girlfriends. There’s no surprise why this is such a popular opinion
♡ *takes a deep breath* Reina and Malachia fucked AT LEAST ONCE during season 1. In episode 45 after the credits roll. The way they looked at each other— nobody can convince me that after giving each other those eyes, they didn’t end up doing it. Then only 4 episodes later! In ep “In the Wolf's Den”, that piece of garbage broke Malachia’s heart by essentially saying that he means nothing to her
♡ Sulfus will progressively become more controlling towards Raf in their totally real and stable relationship
