SUCCESSFUL TRANSITIONS This brighter future update comes from former program participant A. Curtis, "After 5 years of a successful grooming career, I transitioned nearly a year ago to a career in software development. I have so much gratitude in my heart for the opportunities PPP offered me, not only while incarcerated for several years but also the support provided after my release.
I received a PPP scholarship that helped me pay for grooming school and my first toolkit shortly after my release. This assistance led to a career that allowed me to support myself while attending the University of Washington for my Bachelor’s Degree, and following that, the certificate program I went through (or more appropriately, barely lived through) for software development. Although I am super excited about my new career, there isn’t a day that goes by that I don’t miss working with all my fur babies. I’d also love to give a shout out to Rachel and Beth who mentored me and genuinely cared about my success after release. Thanks PPP for all you do, your program makes a difference!" [Pictured is one of A.'s favorite furballs named Oscar, who regularly helps her through complex algorithms and coding challenges, and by help, she mean sleeps through it and steps on her keyboard at will. 😉] Updates like these are what keep us going at PPP. If you'd like to support brighter futures for incarcerated women, community members and animals, head to the link here to make a gift in honor of the upcoming #GivingTuesday global giving event! https://secure.givelively.org/donate/prison-pet-partnership-program/looking-forward-to-brighter-futures-with-ppp

Reentry programs help to build confidence that one has the capability of reaching their desired goals, which helps to reduce the chance of returning to prison. Most programs provide tools and basic resources to help with finding a job, a home, or even a meal. We take it a step further and offer mentoring programs to ensure we not only provide the tools but also build relationships and provide guidance. #reentry #Repost @amiracle4sure #reentryprogram #watwbroward #collegereadiness #reentrymatters #reentryadvocate #reentrytx #reentryworks #reentryservices #reentryprograms #reentrynow #reentrytogether #Harrisburgpa (at Broward County, Florida) https://www.instagram.com/p/Buq_5BcFqS3/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=4mnkjs5q3lpj

BUSY & FULL | As a follow up to yesterday's post, here is the promised update from Melissa on her life post-PPP & incarceration. If you’d like to join PPP in supporting brighter futures, make a gift  in honor of #GivingTuesday.
"Prison Pet Partnership prepared me in a multitude of ways for life outside of WCCW. So much of the work that PPP accomplished in my life was internal. I learned how to participate in healthy relationships, I learned coping skills, good communication, how to show up for myself and those around me and I learned professional skills that allowed me to enter the workforce as a groomer immediately upon my release. In fact, with the help of PPP staff, I was able to connect with an amazing employer (Grateful Dogs - Grooming and Daycamp!!) prior to my departure from prison so that I had a job awaiting me when I arrived in Olympia. Because of this, I walked out of prison with pieces of the foundation for my success already in place.
While incarcerated, PPP staff also assisted me in applying for enrollment at the Evergreen State College. More importantly, they built me up to believe that success in a 4-year university was within my reach. They encouraged me to dream beyond what years of incarceration taught me to believe possible.
Two months after release from custody, I walked onto the Evergreen campus in pursuit of my bachelor’s degree. I am currently a senior on track to graduate in Spring 2021!I now work as a Peer Navigator for the Familiar Faces program in Olympia. I have discovered a passion for working with women who’ve been impacted by incarceration, domestic violence, poverty, substance use, and mental health challenges. In my work, I have the opportunity to build people up the way I was built up by PPP.
Perhaps the greatest gift I received from PPP is Harper—my best friend. Harper and I were paired together during my final year at PPP. I raised her and trained her for a career as a service dog, but in the end, Harper decided she would rather be with me. Six months after my release, Harper was “paroled” and I was given the chance (of a lifetime) to adopt her! She and her fur-brother Ernie and my two recently adopted kittens (Atticus and Riot) make up the heartbeat of my home! (Our story is soon to be featured on the new television program To the Rescue—so, stay tuned!).My life is busy and full and beyond anything I could have hoped it could become in the three years since I left WCCW and PPP."
We couldn't be more proud of the work Melissa is doing now, and of course, it warms everyone's hearts to see the bond that she built with Harper carries on! Updates like these are what keep us going at PPP. If you’d like to support brighter futures for incarcerated women, community members in need of assistance, and animals, head to the link below to make a gift  in honor of the upcoming #GivingTuesday, global giving event!

LIFE SKILLS Today's graduate update comes from Connie, who we could not be more proud of, as she makes the world a better place! “I moved back to my family home in SC upon my release in 2017. I have been the Director of Operations for the Humane Society of Greenwood since June 2019, and am currently the Interim Executive Director. I have adopted all three of my pets from the Humane Society of Greenwood. Jade is my 3-year old mix breed. Kenny is my 2-year old cat and I just recently added Liam, my 5-month old mix breed. I also board dogs that have special needs in my home. PPP offered a multitude of opportunities. I learned Kennel Management, office skills with appointment setting, as well as grooming. I learned how to train through several trainers there at the program over the years. I have to add, the life skills I was able to embrace is what has been a huge element that has enabled my success. I truly believe when I got fully involved in the program I learned how to better communicate with dogs as well as people. As I learned in training to look at what the dog is presenting in order to solve the issue at hand, I have also instinctively communicated with people the same way. I feel that by having that, I was able to grow educationally, as well as mentally. Working in an environment that is positive reinforcement-based, as well as working with the staff from PPP, those staff inevitably become mentors.” 🐾🐾🐾 Connie was also able to use her experience at PPP to create Pawsitive Prison Program, a dog program with staff at the Leath Correctional Facility in South Carolina. 👏👏👏 Updates like these are what keep us going at PPP. If you'd like to support brighter futures for incarcerated women, community members, and animals, head to the link below or in bio to make a gift in honor of the upcoming #GivingTuesday global giving event! https:/tinyurl.com/pppfutures ✨✨✨ #reentrymatters #rescuedogs #prsionstories #prsionpetpartnership https://www.instagram.com/p/CH8Zp_dB0t2/?igshid=1b0lrtdtr3udp

“The bond that they [PPP incarcerated trainers] have with the animals is really really important. You know it’s a real caring bond and I think that transfers over to the client.” - Steve Nourse, PPP client, disability rights advocate, and local professor. It’s always a pleasure to meet with Steve but it was especially wonderful to visit last week to officially retire Ellen 🎉, his PPP service dog of over ten years, and to do some skill assessments with Maya, his new service pup who has been there for about 2 weeks. Maya has a little more training to go but we hope to have her certified soon. It’s been tough for PPP to be “closed” during the pandemic, so we are grateful for moments like these. 🐕‍🦺 We were able to share photos and video of the visit with our incarcerated trainers on Friday and had some proud moments and a few tears. The women continue to work on research projects and are diving into disability and access studies and truly can’t wait to reconnect with the animals they hold strong bonds with. 🥰 #servicedog #servicedogtrainer #servicedogintraining #servicedogsofinstagram #yellowlab #prisonstories #reentrymatters #disabilitypride (at Vashon Island) https://www.instagram.com/p/CF-LIARDNqQ/?igshid=1qty2dcabw01y
