my favourite ACOTAR fic by authors not on tumblr

I wanted to give some love to stories that aren't often mentioned on Tumblr and don't reblogged over and over because their writers don't have accounts here. (I also just want more people to read some of my faves and scream about them with me.)

A Court of Ash and Sunlight by aturner1205 (Elucien; complete)

This Elucien fic had me on the edge of my seat and making up wild theories while it was posting. (I was incredibly wrong in said wild theories.) Elain and Lucien start to get to know each other better when they both are mourning her father on his birthday, and she confesses to him that she's never felt their bond. They're getting closer, and then Lucien is sent off on a dangerous mission, there's an accidental pregnancy, and Koschei after the Archerons. Tons of twists and turns here!

Fury and Siren by hurricane (next-gen; complete)

Next-gen fics where the kids are already adults are sometimes a hard sell, but these two interconnected stories get you deeply invested in Nyx and his cousins (their parents are all still around too). The first one is Nyx and an Illyrian shadowsinger (hmmm...) who's secretly been avenging abused and clipped Illyrian females, and the second is Nessian's son Caden and the only female Darkbringer who's been sent to assassinate him. These boys are definitely their fathers' sons, with their charm and flirting, but their partners do not let them rest on their privilege.

I Miss You (When the Lights Go Out), I Want to Taste the Way That You Bleed, and I Am Done With My Graceless Heart by greenvelvet_couture (Nessriel; ongoing series)

Soooo much Nessriel smut that kicks off when Azriel returns from a mission injured and Nessian want to take care of him (physically first, then sexually). Also a lot about Nesta training her post-ACOSF powers and the dangers that go along with that. But the author is VERY dedicated to the smut, bless her. Part 2 has just started and picks up with Bryce in the Night Court.

A Long Way Down by becauseofreading (Nessian; ongoing)

This one is a tough read, but it does a beautiful job of showing the recovery process from trauma and a suicide attempt. Nesta is suicidal and has deeply convinced herself of her unworthiness. Cassian is taken to task for his treatment of her and the words he's levelled at his mate, and the Valkyries, Azriel, and Elucien rally around her as she tries to heal and love herself with proper therapy. Cassian is ashamed of his treatment of her and is allowed in to help her heal if he doesn't upset her.

Where You Used to Lay Your Head by loveL (Gwynriel; ongoing)

This one is a bit of a time mindfuck, so you have to just accept that the Archerons and the Valkyries were born much earlier than they were in canon. Sixty years ago, Azriel and Gwyn were happy in their secret 20-year relationship (the IC knew he had a partner, but didn't know who she was) when suddenly Gwyn up and left him. Now she's back in the Night Court with Nesta and Emerie after creating the Valkyries in the Day Court, and Azriel is finally going to try to find out what happened that made Gwyn leave and stay away for so long.

Forgive Me, A Court of Shadow and Smoke, and The High Lady, the Shadowsinger, and the Omega, Part 1 and Part 2 by darcyshandflex (Elucien, Azris, next-gen; ongoing)

This epic series starts with Elucien and explaining why Elain has avoided him for so long--but now she's ready to fight for him. In A Court of Shadow and Smoke, we have omegaverse!Azris finally getting together (Azriel's the alpha, Eris is the omega) and all of the emotional and political issues that causes. The final two parts span 30+ years with Azris raising their three girls. When the girls are adults, their future partners are discovered, and that has long-lasting impacts on multiple courts in Prythian. This one is still ongoing, and apparently the final part is going to be sad and I'm not ready for it.

And here are three writers I would have included on this list who have since gotten on Tumblr (I procrastinated on writing this post for THAT long, but they were on the original draft!):

A Little Bit of Light Reading by @infinitefolklore (Elucien; complete)

One of my all-time favourite ACOTAR stories that I have reread a bajillion times. Elain and Lucien are alone at the townhouse and start flirting, which leads to other things, including library sex, a sorta blood duel, a reconciliation, a solstice sex party in the Summer Court, PLUS a threesome near the end, as a little treat.

I Can Wait For You at the Bottom by MissFreakingFortune/ @missfckingfortune (Elucien; ongoing)

Listen, if you're not reading this super-sexy modern Elucien rockstar second-chance romance, I don't know what you're doing with your life. Elain and Lucien were high school sweethearts who had their lives together all planned out, until Lucien left to chase his rockstar dreams. Ten years later, he's returned home for Beron's funeral and once they're back in each other's orbit, they both can't stay away. Lucien is determined to win her back, but Elain is much more wary, even though the attraction is definitely still there. There's also a great big bro Eris, and Mama Vanserra finally has her freedom from Beron so she can maybe start something up again with hot French professor Helion...and also tell him about their child, who is also going to need to know about his true parentage.

Phoenix Rising by Vivienne1412/ @annaskareninas (Elucien; ongoing, complete with regular updates)

I need you to drop everything and go read this fic. Yes, NOW. No, I'll wait.

Beron has seized control over all of Prythian and has either killed or exiled all of High Lords and other powerful fae (Feysand and Nyx are in the Hewn City dosed with faebane everyday; Nessian escaped to Hybern). The humans have also gathered enough power that they're a dangerous threat to the fae. Elain has been working as a nurse for the fae resistance efforts, and her latest patient is the long-thought-dead Lucien, the only free heir of any of the High Lords. They go on the run to protect him, as there's a prophecy about him that makes him the last hope to defeat Beron and Autumn for good, and shore up support from the Continent to get a fighting force. This is an incredibly well-written fantasy story with crazy-high stakes and DRAGONS. Go read it.

I want to say thanks for acknowledging and being critical of racism done by MCR band members and racism in the scene in general. I just recently got into MCR a year ago on a deeper scale and I have found many things off putting and kind of yikes. It's nice seeing someone who is critical of what the band members have done in the past and not excusing them and addressing that it was an issue as a whole. I used to be very hateful towards Lindsey but now I realize that it would be hypocritical (I still do not like MSI just due to it not being my taste in music and I don't care for that shock value type lyrics). I was wondering if you know any resources that talk more about racism in the scene? It's something I'd like to know more about

Oh it’s no problem! Thank you for thanking me, but I don’t see myself as doing anything special. I was raised in an environment where I was fortunate enough to be around people and friends who have made me aware of implicit racism -from my self and others- since an early age. Hearing “well, that’s cause you’re white” is a playful joke but it also made me aware of stuff! Just from what I’ve seen in recent years, the shortcomings of white people who are the focus of fandom are often ignored. There’s nothing wrong with pointing out a racist thing your fave said or did because it doesn’t necessarily make them A Racist™️ (sometimes it can). It also helps people recognize the issues before they get worse. POC aren’t a monolith - there are plenty of things disagreed on amongst any community - but there are definitely over arching sentiments.

Anyway, I’m basically just reiterating a bunch of talking points made by poc on here. As for further reading, I feel like the best sources for me have been mutuals’ posts. First hand stories. Being receptive when people share how certain things make them feel. Racism in this particular scene is also sort of a new and emerging topic as the people who lived through the heart of it are just now reaching authorship age. I look forward to seeing what comes out in the next few years.

Sing It Zine - zine made by fanartists a few years ago!! It’s great, I bought a digital copy myself. Also a bunch of tumblr users participated, so it offers a great follow list if you’re interested.

Regarding TFB

What does TFB stand for?

TFB originally stood for Tickle Fic Bloggers, as a tag some tickle Tumblr vets used in the early community days. It evolved to Tickle Fandom Bloggers as the community grew to include more than just fanfic writers.

Regarding Giftee Assignment

Do we get to choose which prompts/pairings we write for after we choose fandoms or is it just assigned randomly?

As the event host, I have a super fun albeit chaotic puzzle to unravel between all of the participants requests and what they feel comfortable creating for. Once I have received all of the Fandom Registrations (Due Nov 12th by midnight PST), I will go through the lists and begin pairing folks off by fandom. This isn't to say your Giftee is also making your gift, though that does occasionally happen. In an effort to create as much diversity within the pieces being made, I tend to assign from most to least niche, but there will always be plenty of more popular fandoms produced naturally.

Once you've recieve your assignment, you then have the freedom to choose within the options provided by your Giftee. For example:

Fandom One ~ Character A x B* ~ Character B* x C ~ Character A & D Fandom Two ~ Character A x B ~ Character B x C ~ Character A* x B x C Prompts ~ Scenario 1 ~ Scenario 2 ~ Scenario 3

As the Magic Maker, you then just have to choose the pairing and prompt that resonates with you the most! Such as:

Fandom 2, Pairing 3, Scenario 1

Regarding Posting Timeframe

Once the assignments are given out, are they do by December 31 or on December 31? Or just any time during that month?

Posting for the event is during the entire month of December to keep with the holiday spirit. That said, you’re more than welcome to queue it up for Dec 1st at 12:01am your time to be one of the first ones if you finish early 😁 Also, try your very hardest to have your art or fic completed and posted by December 31st as this is a holiday exchange!

We totally get that this is a super busy time of the year. If you have any problems, including needing an extension or needing to drop from the event, please please please reach out. I am here to help!

Regarding "The Featherflake" Warm-Up

What's this whole Featherflake thing about? Are we posting and tagging it?

The Featheflake is just the lil symbol in the banner and pfp for this event. Last year I had a buncha folks chomping at the bit to get started before I had the opportunity yo divvy up assignments, so thought it might be a fun idea to give y'all a warm-up activity for anyone who wanted to participate 😊

The non-flowery version of the prompt is to come up with your own interpretation of what a tickly-snowflake (hence Featherflake) would be!

For artists, you guys can design your own versions of a Featherflake.

For writers, that can either be describing it, how it differs from snow, or the lore/story behind it.

...or you can just show what happens when your fave character's interact with the Featherflakes 😏

It's Broken Hearts and Broken Dreams, it has 2384 hits now.

🍛 Have any comments, tags or reactions to one of your fics every made you laugh or cry or both?

Cry, laugh, smile, everything when Rednyx-sf reblogs my stories and puts their reaction in the tags. 🥺❤ (But I also got some really sweet and nice comments on Ao3 as well. 😊❤)

🍥 What's your favorite fic you've written?

Now this one is difficult. I would say from the non-tumblr prompt ones, it's Battle Scar (really, really special one which was quickly written after an interview with Alex and George ❤) and from the Tumblr prompt ones, it's 100% In Sickness and In Health because... I don't even know. It feels like it's my first own alternative universe (even though I have another) and it's full of hurt/comfort, which is one of my favorite things to write, so yeah. Very, very important one.

But I love almost all of my stories, especially the ones where people send me asks with my fave topics so I get to write about them without having to feel bad about it. ❤

Funfact about Battle Scar: I've always wanted to write a second part/chapter to it but it would've been just heart things and comfort without plot so I never really wrote it because I didn't want people to think that I can't write about anything else but that because I'm selfish etc. But now I'm working on Maybe I deserve all of this and it can kinda be a second part/chapter even though it's a bit different situation. But I'll bring hearts in it because sometimes (rarely) I don't give a fuck about what people think. And I really need this story. So yeah, Galex comfort and hearts, it'll probably end up among my fave stories.

🍡 Which of your fics was the most emotionally difficult to write?

No question it's Racing Heart and Collapsing Lungs, my first planned English story. I was in a really bad shape mentally when I joined the fandom last year and Daniel was in a bad shape too and I liked this driver and his trainer thing, so I started writing a story about Daniel and Michael. I loved working on it but after a while I Tumblr started recommending me Michael hate posts so I stopped writing the story because I felt bad about writing about him as a positive character when most people hated him. I let the story go for a few months but then after a while I went back to it and finished writing it. I was so happy because I worked on it hard and it wasn't easy to write something in English. (Still not easy sometimes.)

It was a big thing for me for long but nowadays I have a love-hate relationship with it, mostly hate, because of what happened with Daniel and Michael's relationship. I want to think about this story as a good thing, as something that made me happy but I can't, because... You know, something very very serious happened between them (I respect their privacy so I don't want to know it, I can live without it and I don't want to be a toxic fan who wants to know all the tea and everything). So yeah, I feel bad about this story, I sometimes want to delete it, but it's still on Ao3 (who knows for how long...).

Summer Sons Sex Week 2022

Hey there fam! I know this isn’t a huge fandom (yet), but I wanted to start a challenge for anyone who wants to dip their toe in writing/drawing/mood boarding/whatever for Summer Sons by Lee Mandelo. This is a challenge I set myself last year for a different fandom and it was a way for me to stretch myself. You can do any pairing and there is no set word count! Drabbles welcome and encouraged as much as full length fics. I’m aware I’m putting this out there on short notice.

Posting will start on Monday, July 11, 2022 and end Sunday, July 17th, 2022. I will make a collection on Ao3 if you’d like to post it to the collection, or if you want to post it on tumblr just tag it #SummerSonsSexWeek2022 or #SSSW22 and I’ll be sure to reblog it!

The daily challenges are as follows:

Moanday (July 11) - Something about being loud. It can be about one of the characters being obsessed with how loud their partner gets, it could be about hearing someone moan and listening in, or it could just be about someone making a lot of noise eating chocolate and it turning sexual. Whatever you choose, the main idea is MOANING. We wanna hear it!

Tongueday (July 12) - Tongue-fucking, ass-eating, licking, slurping, whatever! Get those tongues waggling!

Wetday (July 13) - Shower sex, omega slick, pool time shenanigans, spit as lube, whatever. Give us your dirty wet stories. Today is a flash flood zone.

Thirstday (July 14) - Thirst photos made them do it? Drunk sex? Being turned on when you can’t do anything about it, but fucking obsessing over the person you wanna sex up? Let’s see our faves parched and dying for a drink.

Frotday (July 15) - Frottage! Non penatrative sex that isn’t a blow job or a hand job. Classic clothes on frot? Naked frotting? Sleep frotting?

Shushday (July 16) - Muffled sex! Are they going to get caught in a semi-public location getting off? Is there someone asleep in the same room as them? Is someone holding a phone conversation while the other is edged? It’s all about controlling your volume.

Sexday (July 17) - Any kind of sex! Write whatever you want!

Can we please normalize not sending pictures of fanart directly in asks and/or submissions? Especially when it's a fandom writer sending it? Believe me - I get it. You want to show your fave writers, your moots, you friends, etc, artwork you think they'll like, artwork you think they'll love. And that's great! You should do that!

Just with a link to the artist who created it, not the picture directly or a pinterest or iheartit or tumgir or whatever other unofficial link there is. Why not those? Because the art on them is stolen and reposted art. Much like it is when you send the artwork, not the twitter or instagram or deviantart or tumblr link, directly in an ask.

I have been in the fandom community a long time as a writer (on two side blogs) and even longer just as a reader. And the one constant I have seen is that people repost fanart by sending them in asks to fandom writers. Not only is this very much not okay, it's a recurring problem. Let me clear: I am not blaming anyone. I do think it's just that, because it's being sent in an ask, no one thinks of it as reposting. But it is. It is still taking someone's art and creating a new post with it and taking away the credit from the person who worked hard on it.

And I know the thought process was probably something like "I saved it to my phone and forgot who the artist was" or "I saw it on pinterest and just saved it to send to you" but guess what? There's a way to find the artist. Reverse google image search exists and it works to find the artist a majority of the time. Also, there's a good chance that the artwork has the artist's signature/username. So you can search their username on google, twitter, instagram, tumblr, etc, and then find the art you want to send like that. If you can't find the direct link to the artist through either of these, then it's likely they deleted the art or just deactivated because people kept stealing and reposting their work.

And I mention these being sent to fandom writers specifically because, like, artists are in the same boat as you? Or, at least, they're on the same cruise line as you. If you're a fandom writer and you're going to send fanart - no link, just the picture - to another writer, if you're a writer who received fanart in an ask or submission, please stop and think about how you would feel if someone took something you wrote, something you worked hard on, and just copy-pasted it into the ask box of another, completely taking your name off it, taking away your credit, simply because they thought of someone who would enjoy it. Think about how they didn't bother to link your work, they just sent it directly.

It wouldn't feel good, right? You'd probably be mad and sad and disheartened? Disrespected, even? The same thing goes for artists. They, like writers, deserve to not have their hard work stolen and reposted, whether it's intentional or not.

This is especially important because of the fact that fanart is being sent to writers from writers and, yes, sometimes, even non-writers, but it's especially frustrating and upsetting to see when a writer sends another writer fanart in ask, instead of taking the time to find the artist link and send that, because I've seen some writers who are sent fanart make posts about accounts that have stolen and reposted their work then turn around and answer that ask with stolen artwork. Please give the artist who works just as hard as you do on the stories you write on the art they create and just, please, stop reposting it in asks.

Please take the time to find the direct link by using the google reverse image search and send that instead. If you can't find it or don't have the time to search for it, then, please, don't send it at all. This also goes for discord servers because, even though it's not reaching the thousands it could by sending it in an ask, it's still a repost and you're still taking away views and likes and retweets/reblogs from the artist who worked hard on it.

Because, if this doesn't change, if art doesn't stop getting reposted, then, like writers who have had their work stolen, the artists will deactivate and stop creating and you will be left with nothing. Or they'll probably still create but they won't share it and you will still be left with nothing. Treat artists with the respect you, as a writer, want to be given and don't repost their work, whether you're sending it or just answering what was sent to you. Put it in your rules to send a link, not fanart directly, and to not post or answer the asks that have just a picture - no link, no credit if the artist does allow reposts, no nothing.

The ASoIaF fandom can be so frustrating sometimes.

It’s okay to admit that one doesn’t like this or that character. There’s nothing wrong in disliking a character.

I am pretty open on my blog about my indifference towards or dislike for Sansa because of her stans. I don’t make disclaimers about how much I love the character before proceeding to criticize Sansa. I am not a Sansa stan and that’s okay. My blog is a place for me to jot down my thoughts and celebrate characters, books and shows I do like. If you love Sansa as a character, block me, don’t follow me etc.

What’s obnoxiously annoying are the folks who claim to love all the characters the same and then give their ‘unbiased’ opinions which are held up as canon facts because they came from neutral book reader experts. To hell with that nonsense.

These posts reek of hypocrisy and double standards. It often tears down some characters while subtly propping up others - and it’s gobbled up by the wider fandom as unbiased interpretation of the text.

One example is pushing forth the notion that calling Arya pretty (Something that both her father and brother tell her she is in the books) is wrong, it’s sexualizing her, it’s okay for Arya to be ugly, she’s canonically not pretty because Cat/Sansa said so and no other interpretation is allowed etc. And then the same person who says all this celebrates Sansa’s beauty and ships her with a 27 year old man who falls in lust with Sansa.

Or when they say that the Arya-Lyanna (and Sansa/Lyanna parallels, because it’s always important to mention Sansa with respect to Lyanna even if said person claims to not care about Lyanna as a character) parallels are overrated and not important and they don’t care about Robert’s Rebellion characters but on their blogs there’s all these posts, fanarts and meta about Elia Martell - a Robert’s Rebellion character.

A so called book expert would note that GRRM has several characters outright compare Arya to Lyanna or mistake Lyanna for Arya in the books while Sansa has no such comparison. But no, the unbiased book expert thinks that the Arya-Lyanna and Sansa-Lyanna parallels are equivalent and are both overrated.That post just annoyed me excessively into writing this long ass rant post.

Why are these neutral, unbiased folks so interested in stripping away from Arya’s story?

In the books Jeyne Poole is masquerading as Arya Stark - but that story is only Jeyne’s, has nothing to do with Arya or Arya’s importance to the North.

Arya is a strong warg, Nymeria and her wolf pack are a ‘Chekov’s wolf pack’ that GRRM has hung on the wall - Our expert opinion is that Direwolves are not all that important in the grand scheme of things.

Arya is pretty - why needlessly call Arya pretty, it adds nothing to Arya’s story and is all about sexualizing a child.

Arya-Lyanna parallels - why do we need these parallels, Arya is distinct and interesting without them.

These aspects are all important parts of the character’s story. There are so many very well written essays exploring these concepts with respect to Arya’s journey of self discovery in the books, the narrative significance of her parallels to Lyanna, her bond with Nymeria and her warging talents. For those who are interested, here are two bloggers who actually like Arya and have written about her character and character arc.

Some of these same people will rush to condemn any reading of the books that does not have Sansa wielding power at the end as being ‘Sansa hate’. But they will have no issues to undermine and devalue Arya’s actual book story, the relationships she has, the parallels she has, the skillsets she has, her appearance, her importance to the current story happening in the North.

There is a whole ass plot currently in the books of Northerners rallying for Arya Stark and preparing for battle against the Boltons for Arya Stark. But that’s not important because it’s actually Jeyne Poole and Arya’s story is about sailing off west of westeros. But hey, Sansa will definitely go North and hold power and that’s like 100% happening because we are the unbiased book experts and we say it is so.

Or when all else fails - Arya is a Mary Sue, she’s a fantasy character, she’s a ‘strong female character’ because she fights with a sword, people like her because she’s a tomboy who fights. Sansa is realistic, Sansa is complex - but here are all the essays that basically transfer Arya’s complexity and story to Sansa - because it fits more with their fave, because these aspects would fit better with the traditionally feminine character even though they never tire of talking about how GRRM is deconstructing tropes. Because the trope deconstruction is only applied to Arya, Jon and Dany. Never Sansa.

And honestly, why are these people reading a high fantasy series if they hate fantasy and fantasy characters so much? We love Sansa because she’s so non-magical! Then go read non-fiction books. They also twist Jon, Arya and Dany into ‘fantasy’ characters - despite these characters going through some very real and human experiences. What’s fantasy about Arya’s experiences in war torn Westeros, Jon dealing with bigotry at the wall, Dany trying to rebuild Meereen, while dealing with famine, disease and insurgency?

Or how Jon and Dany getting any kind of happy ending or becoming rulers would be so boring, sweet, predictable, conforming to tropes, a happy ending etc. But Sansa getting love, romance, going home, becoming the Stark in Winterfell, getting her fairy tale ending - that’s totally what GRRM is going to do! No trope deconstruction there! In may ways, Benioff and Weiss’ ending is not all that surprising - Mad Queen Dany, Jon remaining a bastard with the freefolk, Sansa having power as a leader - are all popular theories among bnfs in the fandom. D&D wanting to wind up the show quickly with easily found fan theories is not that much of a stretch.

ASoIaF reddit is equally frustrating. Instead of Sansa stan bnfs on tumblr who pretend to like Arya and Dany while subtly undermining their story and importance, on Asoiaf reddit it’s Stannis stans who dislike Jon and Dany because these characters present a challenge to Stannis. The mere suggestion that Jon may play a role in the battle against Ramsay sends them into frothing at the mouth rage. They hate Jon, Jon is a Gary Sue because he dared advice Stannis - the greatest general ever - on Northern military strategy. Never mind that Jon grew up in the North and learned from Ned, how dare Jon Snow know more than Stannis! Unacceptable!

And I love Stannis Baratheon. I want Stannis to crush and defeat the Boltons. But unlike reddit dudebros, I can see that he is a secondary character, a tragic character who is most probably going to perish and Jon takes over because Jon Snow is a central protagonist in the story.

I feel it’s the same with Sansa. IMO, GRRM clearly doesn’t see Sansa in the same way as he does Arya, Jon, Dany, Tyrion and Bran. Whenever he is asked questions about the books, book plots, long term arcs, endings, age gaps etc it’s these characters he often brings up and references. It’s these characters who are important to him.

And that’s why there’s a lot of undermining and undervaluing of these character’s and their stories, them being described as fantasy characters, tropes, Mary Sues and Gary Sues, ableist rhetoric about Tyrion and Bran to undermine them.

I am damned certain that if it was Sansa who had all the parallels to Lyanna, or if she was the warg, or Jeyne Poole was impersonating her, this would all be ‘VERY IMPORTANT’ and on all the gifsets and essays. But she isn’t. So fandom bnfs are reduced to talking about how these aspects are not all that important anyway.

It’s like how this quote - ‘You may be as different as the sun and the moon, but the same blood flows through both your hearts’ turns up on gifsets every other day on the Arya tag but this quote - ‘Sansa could never understand how two sisters, born only two years apart, could be so different. It would have been easier of Arya had been a bastard, like her half brother Jon. And Jon’s mother had been common, or so people whispered’ very rarely does and will not get reblogged when it does.

Or when Sansa sees Joffrey trying to kill Arya and sides with Joffrey or when Sansa throws Arya under the bus and tells the Lannisters that it’s Arya who is the traitor - just sisters being sisters y’all!

It’s all about maintaining a certain narrative about Sansa - and when others point out her actual relationship with Arya in the books, we are accused of hating and wanting Sansa dead and how we should be criticizing Tywin and the Mountain instead. This is nonsensical whataboutism and ignores that people talk about these aspects of the books because sometimes bullying, getting mocked for one’s appearance, abuse and neglect from parental figures etc. can resonate with certain readers unlike getting one’s head smashed in by Frankenstein.

At the end of the day, I wish these people would be honest about the characters they like and relate to. We are all biased. That’s why our opinions and interpretations are subjective. There’s nothing wrong in saying, hey, I like Sansa more than Arya or Dany, I relate to her character more.

I relate to Jon Snow a lot, I see things from his POV, I would disagree with the characters who disagree with Jon, I enjoy his story at the Wall and the North. My interpretations of the text are therefore colored by my bias towards Jon.

For others, it’s Dany or Sansa or Arya or Tyrion or Jaime. And that’s okay because these are fictional characters and liking one more than the other is not going to earn anyone woke points and lead to women’s rights.

And finally, there’s nothing edgy or cool about disparaging the central protagonists of a high fantasy series as being fantasy characters - go read other books if one is not into fantasy.

This is a two part message.

Firstly, to the nonny who wanted to know if it’s worth it to write Johnlock these days. And anyone else thinking about it. I just started writing this year (have 2 stories posted) and have found it very rewarding. It is my first foray into fan fiction writing and it really helped me as lockdown dragged on. I have been lucky that my fics found their audience (so are getting some comments) and everyone has been so lovely. The whole process (writing, editing, posting) really has helped my mental health. Honestly I was losing myself and it gave me something that was mine to focus on, even if it was 5 min a day. So I would encourage it! Swissmiss’s advice is great too to ensure stuff gets read.

Second point - I am an almost 40 year old who missed tumblr in its early days. Is there etiquette re: commenting when you only have a lurker account (ie a blank page, no followers)? I only joined to follow great content creators like you? I could have made my comment above below the relevant point, but that feels weird since I am not active user. But now I have created more work for you!

Lastly (I guess this is a 3 part message) - thanks for all you do! As someone new to the fandom (and organized fandoms in general) it’s been so helpful. Having said this, I do hope you know you are no less amazing if you need to take breaks from your work here (however long). You have already created a brilliant living thing here. It’s incredible. And if you need to take time to breath away from a screen, take it and know you are still loved. I wrote an essay here - apologies! Have a lovely day :).

It's good for the soul and the mind!

Second point: OOF! Same age range then, my Lovely! And there really is no "etiquette" other than "don't be a dick" hahah! Just reply to posts, reblog content with your comments and additions, and so on, and eventually you'll develop a comfort level that you can operate as a non-lurker. I actually ALSO started out in this fandom as a lurker on a side account (which is actually what this blog is), just basically followed some fave content, got a feel of the fandom, and started reblogging posts with my own comments... and then started writing and posting and now I never leave this sideblog hahaha. But I don't regret it.... lurking is a good way to get yourself familiar with the community terminology and people and just... learning your way around Tumblr, hahah. So yeah, if you have fics you want to promote on my posts, I give explicit permission to reblog and add your fics to them if they're related to the topics! I always want my lovelies to do that; listen, there's more in it for me... I get a tonne of new fics to read this way and in turn I help curate and supply the community with content, LOL.

And THANK YOU SO MUCH for your kind words, oh gosh. I legit just do stuff here because I love doing it, and the fact that so many people benefit from my work, well, that warms the cockles of my cold dead heart LOL. I'm so happy that you find comfort and joy here, and I am honoured that my blog helped your foray into fandom life!

And yeah, I need a break badly... I've actually been taking Saturdays completely off, but most of the weekend I try not to be online so much, and it's helped a bit. I have some holidays coming up at the end of the month, and again in Aug/Sept, so looking forward to that. And every time I take time away from the screen, everyone is so kind and understanding that I really need it. That's what makes this little corner so great, and I am very humbled to have been welcomed into it.

unpopular opinion.... since Vlamis has posted his link to some article about how Roswell NM is showing healthy queer relationships I Just gotta say... IMO roswell nm is NOT showing healthy queer relationships (unless they're talking about isobel and anatsa... that's cute so far. but malex? tf? are we watching the same fucking show?)

don't @ me. i know it's better than a lot of other representations. and i'm glad they're not going to bury their gays. but i'm upset that they're also not going to give their gays a chance at on-screen personal development or, ya know, off-screen therapy sessions referred to on-screen while ACTUALLY TALKING to the person they love about ongoing personal or interpersonal issues...

IMO the year skip did malex absolutely zero favors and the warp speed emotional whiplash served up by Alex in s3 is going to haunt them. s3 has almost completely ruined malex for me. and i hate that. i hate it so fucking much. (and if it didn't ruin it for you, i'm glad. i truly am. i want to be there with you, my friend.) i hope in s4 we see some resurgence of issues and them actually working through them onscreen.

these are just some thoughts that keep haunting me. i'm so fucking disappointing in s3 malex it's hard to reconcile myself to working with the characters rn. so. yeah. i guess this might also be my announcement that all ongoing fics are on hiatus until I can find my will to write them again without being irrationally angry at canon.

Hi, just wanted to introduce myself as a GRRM pessimist. I wanted to defend myself in just one regard: I didn't really mean book!Dany fans with the comment this was obviously directed at. I often encounter discussions with ASOIAF fans who are completely convinced DarkDany will happen who block debates about the sexist implications of that with angry rants of praises of GRRM's writing of fem. chars. and long lists of minor female characters who will prob. survive the story well.

Or cite a "rule happily ever after" ending (which should be unsatisfying for the author if he'd stay true to his words) for fem. characters only marginally involved in somewhat political storylines, not at all in ruling arcs to deflect. These are the people I meant primarily with the notion of premature praise of "feminist credit", not book!Dany fans. IMHO they would still regard it a non-offensive, "feminist" story even with the exact show ending attached to the books. Why I tend to be pessimistic about GRRM has a lot of reasons, not that I don't appreciate your correct characterizations of her book arc and character so far. Love y'all, have a nice day.

I will say that I used a harsh tone because I’m still annoyed at the 198119th essay I came across trying to argue that Dany’s storyline in the books is actually about U.S. imperialism. It created brand new arguments (and I probably already read thousands of asoiaf metas at this point after years of being on the asoiaf fandom, so I was flabbergasted to see, once again, how creative people can be when it comes to Dany hate, lol) based on inaccuracies/lies that could have been easily corrected if the person had read the books more carefully. What’s worse is that that essay was written by a PhD student with a background in postcolonial studies in a book published by an American university. So a) this makes it seem that the person actually had something meaningful to say (which they didn’t) and b) it can’t be said that that person is ignorant like it’s often assumed that Dany haters are. No. Well-informed, well-educated and well-read people hate Dany based on inaccuracies (because they have spread way too much at this point) and create entire narratives that seem reasonable if you don’t remember what happened in the books very well. This is important to acknowledge, IMO, because it shows that the amount of vitriol leveled at Dany really is unprecedented, and it has influenced how she’s analyzed in the academic world. This whole situation really, really pisses me off.

So I was ranting because it felt to me that book!Dany fans (who are actually very few, because most Dany fans here talk more about show!Dany) were not even having their points heard in their small Tumblr bubble. I have come across quite a few people that misconstrue what we have to say, after all. Also, while your comment was indeed the one that prompted me to rant, I saw people make comments along the lines of yours before too, so please don’t take it personally (And I wouldn’t even say with certainty that the OP wrote that post specifically because of your comments... I know that we already discussed that issue in private before (because we talk regularly about almost everything Dany related). And I know that she’s a very diligent meta writer that has dozens of metas prepared in advance that will be posted weekly throughout the year. So I wouldn’t be surprised if she had already written that post specifically for Daenerys’s Day a while ago).

All these petty things were annoying me (not just your comment) when I made that rant in the tags and I come to Tumblr specifically to whine about fandom stuff, so... Yeah, sorry lol.

Also, I 100% agree with you when you say that many fans “would still regard it a non-offensive, "feminist" story even with the exact show ending attached to the books”. It is very hypocritical that they spend thousands of words discussing how GRRM’s writing can have misogynistic implications depending on how he treats minor characters that barely have any characterization (and they made some good points, but it’s also worth noting that these characters were deliberately meant to be plot devices) and without bothering to mention how he might end up mistreating the story’s actual female protagonist (because they’re all too happy with her being given a bad ending and getting out of their faves’ way so that they can thrive). Even those discussions are clearly biased.

Back to Asgard Month

Celebrating nine years of nine realms! Please join us for a Thor fandom event to take place September 13 through October 10!

For the 9-year anniversary of the release of Thor 1 on DVD on September 13, let’s get back to the fandom’s roots with a month of revelry fit for the gods!

What is Back to Asgard Month?

It’s a fandom event focused on Thor and Loki (either as a ship or as brothers) and other Thor characters and their portrayal in MCU Phase 1 & 2 (Thor 1, Avengers 1, TDW, AoU). It’s about sharing the love of those characters and stories with other fans by posting content, recs, meta, discussions, and anything else that you enjoy, and encouraging commenting and interaction within the community!

When is it?

Four weeks starting on September 13, with each week dedicated to a different movie. This doesn’t mean you can’t post things outside of that schedule, it just gives some structure for those who want it.

Week 1: Thor 1 (September 13-19)

Week 2: Avengers 1 (September 20-26)

Week 3: TDW (September 27 - October 3)

Week 4: AoU, etc., or catch-all if you missed any of the above (October 4-10)

How do I participate?

So many ways! Here are a few ideas:

Do a rewatch and post your reactions, talk about the movies, whatevs

Talk about what the fandom means to you, what drew you to the characters, etc.

Share recs for “classic” fic, art, edits, vids, whatever---tell us about your old faves!

Revive some old fandom memes! Loki does what he wants, Thor.

Comment on older content--who doesn’t love comments, whenever they arrive?

Share and rec your own older content---latecomers to the fandom may never have seen it!

Create and share new fic, art, edits, meta, playlists, vids, or any other new content you feel like making, as long as it is focused/based on the early movie canon

Share prompts and plotbunnies for others to take up---tell us about that idea you wish someone would write/draw/whatever!

Tag it #backtoasgard so we can find it and reblog it!

You can also submit content directly to this blog. If it meets the requirements, we will post it. (Note: Please submit only your own content. No reposting!)

Rules:

This event is focused on the Thor characters in Thor 1, Avengers 1, Thor: The Dark World, and Avengers Age of Ultron. Inclusion of non-Thor-franchise characters or content referencing other MCU movies from the same era is acceptable. Content that involves any Phase 3+ movies (TR, IW, EG, etc.) is not. That content is everywhere and it’s great too, but this event is about celebrating the early era of MCU Thor fandom.

Inclusion of elements from comics, other Marvel (e.g., Marvel TV, Avengers: EMH, Tales of Asgard), mythology, or any AU you’ve got is also cool, as long as the focus/basis is the events and characters from the early Thor movies.

Absolutely no character bashing. If you can’t praise your fave without bashing other characters, do it somewhere else.

Absolutely no ship bashing. The early days of MCU Thor fandom were largely thorki-focused, and while other pairings are totally cool in this event, any ship bashing, especially any anti-ism, is not welcome. If you follow this blog or its tag, you are acknowledging that you may see some thorki.

Absolutely no kink shaming. This fandom grows its own kinktomatoes.

Criticism of the movies is fine, but this is an event for people who enjoyed them. Keep that in mind and don’t be a dick. We realize this is subjective, but please err on the side of caution.

Tag/warn appropriately. At a minimum, this means following AO3 rules for Major Warning content. If you are linking to a work hosted elsewhere (such as AO3) and it is appropriately tagged in that location, you need not duplicate warnings on tumblr. NOTE: Sibling incest does not need to be warned for if a work is labeled as thorki. ALSO: Adopted sibling incest should not be labeled “pseudo-incest” or anything that is otherwise insulting to adoptive families.

Within this event at least, please treat other fans like people. If you disagree with something, do so civilly. If you don’t like something, move on and find something you do like. Remember that we’re all here to have a good time.

You are free to take part in as many (or as few) ways as you like. No one is judging or grading your participation. There is no minimum, no maximum, and very loose time limits.
