so I’ve seen a lot of things where people who ship portwell say that ej lost two girls to Ricky/ricky stole two girls from ej. and while yes in the first season Ricky was actively trying to break nini and ej up that is not the case at all in season three. He stepped back because he saw how happy Gina and ej were together in that moment. he knew that that’s what Gina wanted then and did everything he could bear to help that out. he helped Gina with her promposal. He didn’t throw Gina under the bus after rcosl because he wanted them to figure it out for themselves. and again, he didn’t throw Gina under the bus when she was upset about ej missing her basketball thing. He tried his best to stay out of their relationship and let them figure themselves out when they were going thru problems because he had 👏🏼 character 👏🏼 growth 👏🏼 he didn’t want to meddle. it kinda goes back to season two when Ricky’s mom says “if you truly love someone sometimes the best thing you can do is to let them go” (or something like that, I don’t remember the exact wording). Ricky believed that he should let Gina go. And so he did! he didn’t meddle as season one Ricky would have. he could have confessed to Gina about his feelings at the end of prom but didn’t because he saw that she was hurting. and again, later, he had the opportunity to do so again and didn’t because he found out Gina and ej had broken up. he loved Gina even if he didn’t realize it and only kissed her once she made the move first. They had a whole MONTH in between the end of camp and the documentary trailer premiere! And I saw someone say that it’s “lazy writing” and portwell had been built up from season one with everything and rina only had like ten scenes with zero chemistry at all… uh, bffr. Coming from someone who worshipped rini, all I can say is that I never felt any chemistry between ej and Gina. yes I will admit the things they did were borderline cute but as someone who went from not trusting Gina to loving her, I was team Gina, to be quite honest with you. I just wanted her to be happy. And if that’s with ej, if that’s with Ricky, whoever(but not Mack) then there you go. the writers decision not mine. but the people who say that “rina really didn’t have anything in season one or two” don’t understand the point of a mid game ship. They don’t understand that Ricky had given up on Gina. Ricky and nini barely interacted post homecoming! until Gina left. Ricky thought she was gone forever, Gina thought she was gone forever, and so I hate to paint nini as the “only choice left” but the fact remains that Ricky regressed and undid all of the growing he had done with Gina to be with nini. and they were not gonna last, as I said, I loved them dearly, but by the first episode of season two you could tell it wasn’t going to be the same. and then Gina and Ricky barely interacted over the course of season two. why? Because Gina was heartbroken, obviously, and they never got closure over her post finale confession. she wanted something so bad but saw that she couldn’t have it so she found someone who made her feel an inkling of what she felt for Ricky. and people say that ej did this and this and this and constantly supported her but like… he brought her a granola bar to pick her up at the airport. um, okay, skip on to the next please? they had a heart to heart where Gina basically inflated his huge ego (I’m sorry, I love ej but he was a lil cocky in the first couple seasons) and… what else? “Saved” her in the hallway? by pretending to be her boyfriend? and portwells can say all they want but the fact remains is that the confession scene from Gina was filmed in season one, the post homecoming scene in Ricky’s car changed everything for tim and the rest of the show, rina won, and everybody’s happy. because ultimately, that’s all I’ve wanted for anyone on this show. I just wanted them to be happy. and if you truly love this show you’d be wanting that for the characters too.

one thing I’ve seen a lot of portwells/ej stans mention is that the wildcats were “bad friends” for not helping ej with his stress/pinning more specific blame on gina for not helping her boyfriend when he was stressed. for one, this is kinda blatantly not true. besides the fact that ej refused to ask them for help (and understandably so) by not revealing that he was director at the beginning of 302 or inviting miss jenn to outsource help, for example, most of them helped him/offered to help in one way or another. gina constantly shared her faith in his abilities and even offered to step back on their relationship while at camp to allow him more free time. val appeared to fulfill a lot of the directing role with casting and helping to organize the readthrough. maddox helped with organizing auditions. carlos (along with val) organized rcosl to help get more drama. I could share more examples but they serve to highlight that when ej was drowning, he was not left at sea. a lot of his stress was intrinsic, and even all the help in the world was going to prevent it because of pressure he imposed on himself. to blame his friends, who were there to have fun, with the only responsibility on their plate being to learn their lines, is a misunderstanding of why he was stressed and how he could be helped. the best thing they could do for him was learn their roles for opening night. in fact, miss jenn literally tells him “if they know their lines, they’ll be fine.” i also wanna mention that ej didn’t really seem to be failing at directing. it was more of a combination of personal doubt and the introduction of the production being filmed. the latter likely placed stress on all of them and there was nothing that they could really do to change that for themselves, let alone ej. anyways, all this is leading up to my main question: what did you guys want the wildcats to do for ej? take on directing parts of the show while also learning their lines in under two weeks? magically find him a way to please his father? the stress that ej was under sucked. but it wasn’t the fault of his friends, nor could it disappear in the presence of sweet words. I just wanted to pose this inquiry to his stans and open it up for respectful debate!

HSMTMTS Maddox Autism Analysis

I had to use my laptop for this one, cause I'm not about to write all this shit on mobile. However, I shall not be adding gifs and pics to this one, cause i don't have those on my laptop, and i think there is a limit to those anyway. This one's long, and not guaranteed exhaustive cause my memory is Meh, at best.

Anyways, Onward!

General Info

So just from Promotional Material for Season 3

Maddox:

Techie Who always follows the rules.

The most excited person for Camp.

Hates Change

Comes to the same camp every year

From these, we already can see the building blocks of a targeted interest and a need for routines. The always following the rules is reminiscent of Autistics not breaking rules due to simply not thinking to.

Once the show itself aired, Maddox pretty quickly showed multiple indicators as well. For the sake of organization, I'm going to break these down as Tics and Tendencies and give a few examples, rather than by episode.

Irritation/Panic at unexpected changes in schedule

Saylor mentions frequently that Maddox is really struggling in Season 3 because for the first time, something is drastically disrupting this yearly escape. Unlike Ricky who, while panicking at the change, is able to actively work against it, Maddox struggles with fighting the change and usually must physically remove herself to prevent a more extreme reaction.

Maddox begins already thrown off due to Jet being sent with her to camp.

Dislikes when the Auditions is interrupted by Jet arriving an hour late.

She isn't hanging out with EJ this summer, likely due to feeling thrown off that he brought an entire troupe of friends.

Literally everything in Woman in the Woods - and going to her hiding spot to avoid a full meltdown.

RCOSL changes how she normally does the set direction in order to cause drama - again runs off after her and Jet's fight.

Really struggles with Madison's initial appearance at camp.

Realizes she signed to go to NZ before getting with Ash, and completely removes herself from the post-production celebration that LITERALLY every other character attended.

Very Literal Speaking

Several times when Maddox accidentally gets herself in trouble its because she says something that doubles as a pointed metaphor, even though she was being literal.

"...that kind of bond is....Forever"

"...you just got to commit to one side, of the boat....or else you'll fall in..."

"You have two minutes" - and actually timing it

"....and well, life has other plans..." - not realizing Ash could take this as an attack on her relationship.

"...Yeah my crystals haven't charged in like a month" - thinking Jet is literally taking about what she was actively doing.

Scripting

Maddox has multiple moments where she communicates using a clearly practiced script, and a few where she struggles once someone doesn't react how she expected and she did not have a response ready.

The automatic little Thank yous when that one kid compliments her at a few points in the season.

The safety information on Newbie Night

The Woman in the Woods story is scripted - she gets interrupted and starts mixing up scripts when trying to get back on track.

Truly awful improvised scripting during RCOSL. Also not having the words to tell Carlos to lay off the whole 'hot for Jet' thing.

Memorizing all the lines she would need as a PA on the flight.

We literally see her scripting her confession to Ash.

Fumbling through talking to Ash about the NZ move, as she didn't think it was a conversation she was going to need to have.

Info Dumping

When Maddox gets excited, she frequently starts info dumping without thinking about it, usually while also kind of tuning out whats happening around her.

Several times in 3x03

Talking about her favorite nigh before she realizes no one is listening.

again when leading the group to the tents, when she is giving the rules and safety information.

Info dumps about rising signs before Ash gets upset and leaves.

Snapping

Maddox tends to snap when deciding what to say to someone.

When she calls out Carlos for changing the cast list

We can hear a snap when she first asks Ashlyn if she was a Leo rising

She snaps when getting annoyed at Jet and Ricky when she directs them

She snaps after finishing her script for confessing to Ashlyn

Tapping/Clapping

Maddox claps and taps things when idling or when she is in between actions. Generally, if she's not got her hands in her pockets and isn't holding something, then she's doing this.

Maddox taps her hands together after Ashlyn catches her attention about the letter.

Clapping hands together as she talks when entering the honeycomb.

Taps on the set pieces when not using the drill.

Claps her hands with the paper star when Carlos suggests she likes Jet.

Taps on the bunk beds while talking to the girls after Camp Prom.

Facial Expressions

Maddox's face tends to either be way more expressive than expected for the response she is giving, or way less. When she is alone, or with friends/Jet, her expressions are more free. she spends less time guessing and just lets her face to whatever its going to.

During RCOSL, her expression is almost unchanged, probably due to having to think about it constantly.

Once Newbie Night started going downhill, she paid more attention to seeming fine.

She is a lot more open in the fourth season, except with Quinn, where she remains professional.

Okay so Maddox has exactly ONE coping mechanism, and its removing/Distancing herself from the situation.

Goes to hiding spot after scary story is interrupted

Stays by the wall for much of movie night

Building set/Managing costumes alone, instead of adjusting to help.

Operates more or less ALL of stage alone using a switchboard. Including in Season 4, when we know she has stagehands available.

Goes to hiding spot after argument with Jet.

Goes to probably commit balloon homicide before Jet stops her.

Hides from Ash to avoid NZ conversation.

Mentions that she doesn't actually attend Camp Prom all that often and normally goes to prank the boy's bunks.

Its okay, she'll probably get better about this with her now robust support system.

Anyway, there is definitely more, but this is what i can remember without immediately re watching the show again and going episode by episode.

Summary: Y/N has always been a background character. That’s just life for some folks isn’t it? But what if she’s determined to not just be another member in the ensemble? What if someone helps her step into the spotlight in her own special way?

Warnings for the Series: a teeny bit of angst but mainly fluff, slow burn

Pairing: ricky bowen x black!reader

Word Count: 3.0k

A/N: I’m thinking 3 or 4 parts left after this. It won’t go much further in the story than when Ricky and the reader actually get together.

A/N II: My writing style in this isn’t my favorite but I never realized how hard it would be to do hsmtmts as a series fic. I still love the plot though so I’m going to see it through but serious thank you to all the readers that enjoy this story because I’m honestly not sure about my own writing here.

“EJ, care to share why we aren’t in a stretch circle right now?” Kourtney asked through a yawn.

“Corbin and Channing need more.”

“More?”

“Just some reality style juice to bring everything to life.”

“What EJ means is that the docuseries and the musical are getting canceled if we don’t bring some pettiness to our performances,” Carlos explained. “So the three of us spent all night, and well into six am, making a plan. I present the RCOSL.”

“What?” Ashlyn just stared at the first posterboard in confusion.

“The Real Campers of Shallow Lake? I thought that was pretty self-explanatory.”

“Look, it’s easy,” EJ encouraged. “You know how as real people we pick up on social cues and other people’s feelings?”

“Do we?” Gina asked pointedly.

Carlos cut in after EJ faltered. “Anyway, forget being nice. Think of the three Bs. Bombshells, betrayals, and bitch slaps.”

“Look I love the real housewives but we’re students not millionaires. We have no money to burn or kids to blame, so how are we pulling this off?” Kourtney asked.

Jett leaned back in his seat. “Can I be Team Kourtney on this one?”

Carlos sighed and showed the next posterboard. “Here’s how. Everyone needs roles and we’ve already taken the liberty of assigning them. Play your part to a T.”

No one was quite sure about the plan but if it saved the show then they would consider it. Although, they were starting to wonder how much of these roles were completely made up. Some seemed a bit personal. The judgy one, the jilted ex, the one with a dark past, the crier, the one who's here for the wrong reasons, the one the audience pities, the one with a catchphrase, the shrink, the bad boy, and the instigator.

“It’s a formula and the formula works,” Val said with a nod.

“Isn’t this a little tawdry?” Kourtney asked.

“I was going to say the exact same thing,” Jett spoke up from behind Kourtney.

“And that is why, Kourt, you get to be the judgy one,” Carlos said.

Val slapped Kourt’s picture up on the board underneath the label that read judgy. Everyone else started getting parts assigned. Jilted ex— Ricky. Dark past— Ashlyn. Crier— Maddox. Wrong reasons— EJ. Pitiful one— You. Catchphrase— Gina. Shrink— Val. Bad boy— Jett. Instigator— Carlos. Everyone else could pick who they would stick by throughout the show.

Ricky and Gina looked at each other. Gina raised her hand. “Um, is giving Y/N the role of being the one the audience pities a good idea?”

“Of course,” Carlos said. “She doesn’t even have to act, it limits risks of everyone messing up the less actors we have. It’s why I’m the instigator. And Val’s the shrink because she’s a psych major.”

“Oh, good, so we aren’t stretching for these parts,” Kourtney said.

Carlos pointed at her. “Good. I want a lot more of that energy today.”

“Wait, why is it less risk?” Gina was focused on that part.

“Because her social anxiety and the fact that she never gets the lead despite having enough talent is the perfect thing for the audience to root for.”

Ricky sat up. “Dude, that’s not cool.”

“People have to be exploited, Ricky. Why do you think you’re the jilted ex?”

“I’m not jilted.”

“But you are an ex, just play it up.”

Ricky’s nostrils flared slightly but he dropped it. Everyone started to get a bit excited about the idea, mainly Ashlyn and some of the ensemble. It was just another role. Besides, everyone knew that reality tv wasn’t all that real. They listened to their four goals for the day. Cry, Slap, Throw a drink, Get caught saying something scandalous on a hot mic. Aside from the drink throwing, it seemed easy enough. Even the drink wouldn’t be too bad— they just had to find a scenario that called for drink throwing. Carlos had already organized how the slap would be done. At some point they’d have an exercise on fake slapping for theater and someone would just “accidentally” hit someone else. It was brilliant. Now, they just needed to figure out who was willing to take a handprint to the cheek for the team.

They were all working on slaps and other things while waiting for Corbin and Channing. Maddox and Ashlyn were backstage trying to figure out a way to make Maddox cry. She wasn’t someone who could just turn on the tears. Nothing Ashlyn was suggesting even made her think about crying. Carlos walked by.

“We’ll work out the kinks… I know! You two are in love with the same boy. How about…” He looked around. “Oh, Jett! Perfect, everyone loves a bad boy. You both are in love with Jett but he’s obviously in a relationship with Y/N— But he’s looking at Kourtney. We get a love triangle and a potential cheating scandal all in one. We might actually be better than the housewives.”

“Jett? Oh, God, no,” Maddox protested but Ashlyn was so in.

“Oh, God, yes. It makes sense that I, with a dark past, would be attracted to the bad boy.”

Carlos called Jett over to explain. “Jett, do you know Maddox? She has the hots for you.”

A mix between a laugh and a scoff escaped his mouth. Before he could protest, Carlos held up a hand.

“And so does Ashlyn. But you have the hots for Kourtney which creates a problem and is the source of mega angst in your relationship with Y/N.”

“Woah, we are not d—”

“Channing is here!” EJ yelled. “Let’s practice Kristoff and Anna first so we can get some good ex stuff with Ricky and then we’ll move into Young Anna and Elsa for Carlos’ diva moment.”

Carlos left before Jett or Maddox could protest about his idea. They both looked at each other and shuddered before getting to where they were supposed to be for the camera. You could feel the tension when you finally made it to The Barn for rehearsal. Everything started to go wrong as Alex and Emmy rehearsed the scene where Young Anna and Young Elsa created Olaf for the first time. Carlos had started complaining and the two girls who you watched be friends were suddenly at each other’s throats about who was in charge of the snow.

“Is this supposed to be fake snow?” Carlos complained. “Because it looks like sea salt.”

“Emmy’s the one that grabbed the wrong prop.”

“Me? You’re Elsa, shouldn't you be in charge of all the fake snow?”

You stepped in between the girls. “How about I be in charge of the snow? Remember what you learned as part of the Guppy Troupe.”

“Arguing about the problem doesn’t solve the problem,” the three of you repeated.

“Perfect. So since I’m the Principal Snowflake, I’ll make sure the snow looks better and spread out more. Deal?”

The two girls muttered an “I guess” and stepped aside. Val was waiting to see your dance planned for Anna and Elsa building Olaf. You wanted to make it simple and really highlight the girls since they wouldn’t be onstage for pretty much the rest of the show. You took off the booties protecting your ballet shoes and showed Val. It was really simple. You planned on starting behind Carlos. Emmy would toss snow and then Alex. Since Alex was Young Elsa, you thought that was when you would spring to life. In between the two girls you would do a couple of balancés to grab each bucket.

“And then just simple soutenus as I throw snow, maybe a pique when I toss the buckets off stage to Maddie. Oh and all in demi pointe since Elsa’s powers aren’t very developed yet, so I wanted to use my standard ballet slippers instead of pointe for the first bit.”

“That sounds decent,” Val said.

“Decent? That’s what she came up with? That’s it?”

Your eyebrows knitted together as you looked between Carlos and Val. Was the routine that bad? It wasn’t the top of your skill set but that was the point. They knew that. They had seen your work before… Well, they hadn’t. No one showed up to watch you in The Nutcracker and you weren’t sure they ever bothered to watch the performance video of it. Maybe they did think this was the best you could do. You felt your breathing start to get a bit shallow. Ricky closed his script, putting his focus on you.

“Carlos, I said it was decent. Decent means we have time to workshop it. The rest of the routines aren’t like this are they?”

“You think Clara could put together something better.”

“I-I wanted the girls to sh-shine so—”

“Then what’s the point of having a principal snowflake? And where were you earlier? We had to push this scene back you know, we did Ricky and Gina song first. It’s not even close to the top of the show.”

“I told EJ.” You gestured feebly to the director. “I was working on the dances and I had an audition fo—”

“An audition?” Carlos looked around you to focus on Val. “She isn’t even focused on our show.”

“Carlos,” Ricky cut in.

“Were you doing something else, Y/N?” Val asked you.

You stuttered through another sentence about EJ knowing.

“Are you always this unfocused because we can talk about it some other time but right now the show is our priority.”

“She’s always like this,” Carlos added. “Not to be an instigator but that’s why she’s never been more than principal dancer. Her talent is probably the best but she thinks she’s better than everyone just because she’s gone pro.”

He said the last bit in an exaggerated stage whisper. EJ winked at Carlos and Val, knowing Channing’s camera wouldn’t catch him in frame. This was going great. You could feel your face get hot as it got harder to take a proper breath. Ricky watched your fingers tremble as you tried to clasp your hands together. You took a couple steps backwards when the tears started. Both Jett and Ricky moved towards you— Ricky reaching first— to stop you from accidentally falling off the stage.

“Are you okay, Y/N?” Ricky barely got the words out before Jett was moving him out the way.

“Don’t bother her more. Y/N/N, look at me.” Jett held your shoulders. “We’re going outside now, okay?”

You hit at your chest.

“We can breathe better outside.”

You followed Jett’s lead to stand on the porch of the barn. Inside, they were still rolling with the scenario. Ashlyn turned to Maddox.

“Doesn’t it suck that he went to go help her? I mean I guess that’s his girlfriend and all.”

“They aren’t dating!” Maddox blurted out.

“We can only dream, Gadget, can—”

“She’s our cousin!”

“I k— wait, what? Our cousin, you and Jett…”

“Are siblings, yes! He’s the literal worst but he’s still my brother. I never want to date him, oh, and I’m gay.”

Maddox stormed backstage to the props table. She was okay with the reality script just not okay with anyone ever insinuating that she and her brother would be a thing. Channing thought he got enough footage for the day and started to pack up most of his film equipment. He told the cast they needed to take a picture for promo. He’d be back shortly to show them the preview for the documentary to drum up interest in people watching the musical on livestream and also to watch the docuseries when it came out. EJ went to go get you and Jett for the picture. Ricky lit up at hearing Maddox’s words.

“Wait, they’re cousins?”

Even Carlos looked surprised. “My straightdar must be broken. Can we all agree they were definitely the grumpy sunshine trope?”

Everyone nodded their heads. You came walking back in, immediately moving to sit next to Ricky. He was on the edge of the group and you didn’t want to be smushed in between everyone. It felt too claustrophobic at the moment. He wiped at the tear stains to try and make them less visible for the photo. Ricky looked down when you reached for his hand, barely lifting his head in time for the shot. While everyone else was discussing what to do next when Channing returned, Ricky took you outside. You both sat on the bench attached to the barn’s porch.

“Carlos didn’t mean anything.”

“I know, it’s for the reality show. Jett told me.”

“I can’t believe you two are cousins.”

“Of course we are. Why do you think I talk to him and Maddie with no problem? We’ve known each other since diapers.”

“Everyone kind of thought you were dating.”

You gagged. “Jett? Ew, really?”

“You can’t blame us.”

“Yes, I can. Come on, Maddie, Jett, and I are obviously related.”

Ricky raised his eyebrows. “Obviously?”

“Same smiles.”

“When have we ever seen Jett smile?”

“Okay, fair enough,” you said with a laugh.

“Hey, what audition were you talking about?”

“Oh.” You picked at your booties. “For the ballet. Saltwater always holds auditions in summer for the first musical and ballet of the season but most pros are on tour so they can send in videos. Normally I do it in person but they moved up the date this year. I need to send it in by the day of our show or I’m not auditioning.”

“What’s the show?”

“The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe.”

“Really? That’s awesome. Are you going for Susan or Lucy?”

“Do I look like I could pull off either? Don’t even think about mentioning Clara again.” You chuckled when Ricky closed his mouth. “I was thinking maybe The White Witch? They showed us the costume designs and part of her solo.”

“Well, whichever one you want. It’ll be perfect. Hey, do you wa—”

“Y/N! Can we talk? Like sister time.” Gina stood in front of you.

You gave Ricky a half-smile but he just brushed it off and encouraged you to go. You walked with Gina through the camp just so she could walk and talk. She was going through a somewhat rough patch with EJ. He was a bit tense this summer. But she was more pissed that he seemed to be confiding in Val instead of her. It wasn’t even jealousy over Val. It was the fact that maybe he didn’t trust her enough to say anything.

“I just didn’t think my summer of firsts would involve my first boyfriend fight. We’re not even fighting. It’s like one-sided confusion.”

“Maybe,” you started to suggest very carefully. “You need a break.”

“What?”

“Not forever. Just until the end of camp? EJ is going through a big transition in his life and it’s very clear what you want and where your boundaries are. It’s not like I’m saying go explore other options. Sometimes, you need alone time to figure out what you really want. You know what you want, G, but maybe he doesn’t? Or maybe he doesn’t know how to get what he wants?”

“You think a break would help?”

“I think if you explained it clearly to him. Who knows, you might not even need the break then? Just talk to EJ, he might not even realize that he’s making you feel this way.”

Gina gave you a hug. “This is why I love sister time. I’m gonna miss staying with you.”

You laughed as you hugged her back. “You act like you’re leaving Salt Lake. It’s just your mom coming back to town, you can still come over for breakfast just like Ricky.”

Ricky went to go figure out something while you talked to Gina. He was pretty sure he saw a little campfire area with almost proper log benches and some bushes. Instead of seeing an empty bench, he saw Jett sitting there.

“How do you always manage to find my hiding spots?”

“Dude, don’t.”

“You okay?” Ricky sat down next to him.

“The blow-up Maddie and I had back there wasn’t even the half of it. She’s seen me as the bad guy for most of her life, she doesn’t think I was playing a role today. Forget it.”

“Why don’t you try to show her you’re sorry? You can’t be all that bad.”

Jett huffed. “I see why you like Y/N, you two have the same blind optimism in people.”

“I don’t l—” Ricky didn’t even bother finishing as Jett walked away.

Carlos passed by. “Is he…”

“Oh, he’s fine. It’s about him and Maddox.”

“Thank goodness. I just found Y/N. I had no idea she didn’t know about the plan, I thought someone would have filled her in.”

“She knows now. And you killed it today.”

“Thanks,” Carlos said with a smile. “So did you. Jilted ex suits you, bro… Oh, oh, I said bro and now you’re probably going to reveal something.”

“It’s possible I wasn’t completely acting. Except I don’t know if I can be a jilted ex if I never got the chance to be an ex.”

Carlos turned his entire body to face Ricky on the bench. “Wait? That wasn’t an act today? You and Gina—”

“Gina? No. We’ve always been just friends.”

“Then who? The only other girl I see you wi— wait, are you gay? Are we talking about EJ, Jett?”

“Close to Jett— I like Y/N. I’ve been trying to be just friends but I’m slowly failing. I think I more than like her. Is that crazy? I couldn’t even say it to Nini but with Y/N... I think I love her, Carlos … What?”

Carlos pointed, with wide eyes, behind Ricky. “I guess that covers the hot mic scandal.”

Ricky looked to see Channing running out of the bushes. He squeezed his eyes shut. Did Channing just catch his confession on tape? This was bad. The entire world was going to hear it. You were going to see it. Ricky had to face the idea that he was going to have to tell you. It would be better for you to hear it from him than from a documentary. Maybe it wouldn’t be so bad. You had so easily told him about your past crush on him… but you had said it like it was nothing. You got over it but Ricky wasn’t sure he could get over his. He had no clue what he was going to do.

what would've made the portwell break up SO much better is if we saw Gina actually be a "maybe" to ej.

The whole season we saw ej trying his hardest to be with her, even before the letter from his dad. It's not like he didn't want to be with her, he definitely did. ("A perfect show is how I stay with you.") But Gina was barely trying to help. Ej said to miss Jenn that he was underwater with the show and didn't want the others to know. But was anyone helping? No. Even his girlfriend who loves theater just as much and maybe even more as him? No. She saw the rcosl thing as a chance to make ej jealous instead of talking to him. Do I think Gina was obliged to help him? No, definitely not. But I feel like she should've recognized his stress earlier and talked to him about it.

She was never a maybe to him. Ej always tried his hardest for Gina, even when it meant skipping out on fun camp events during his last summer to be a kid. But ej was a maybe to her.

“do i count?”

“well, he’s gotta show up and you know… stay around” ]

[ “i’m the guy who shows up, remember?” ]

[ “can you believe ricky showed up?” ]

[ “you can’t not show up?” ]

ej shows up at the airport for gina but the first sign of trouble he doesn’t stay around, ready to shut gina out of his life. gina has to chase him down to make him stay with her.

ej shows up for gina as soon as the cast list is announced but doesn’t (mentally and emotionally) stay around to listen to her tell him all her worries. instead he shows to be far away in the moment.

ej shows up once again after their argument about him keeping things from her, telling her that he wants to fight for them. but that same day he once again doesn’t stay long enough when all she wanted to spend the day with him.

so here we have gina doing her “hail mary” and ej shows up but makes it clear that he can’t stay around because he has to go back to work. but most importantly he is not staying with her for her hail mary. he, in fact, rejects her promposal.

this time ej doesn’t show up for gina but promises to do so. gina believes him because ej is “the guy that shows up”. and yet here she is on the dance floor and ej is nowhere to be found. he didn’t show up for her, let alone stay for her.

personally i don’t think the argument is that ej doesn’t show up. because it’s undeniable that he has shown up for gina before. the argument comes on the fact that as much as he tries to stay (and we can see him trying because he is fighting for it) he never actually succeeds.

i find it interesting that “staying around” comes a second thought in that scene in season 2 and for the rest of the show. because gina (and the audience) is so focused on who is showing up for her and forgetting that they have to stay around as well. “ej shows up for gina” he does. or has tried to for the most part of the show. but after a while he leaves and gina has to chase him down.

but what i find the most interesting part is not the parallels of ricky showing up for gina but how ricky makes sure everyone is also showing up for gina. ricky is making sure that he is simply not just showing up, but giving it his all and being the best leading man that gina deserves. he makes sure that jet is not just showing up but that he is working his best for gina because that’s what he knows gina deserves.

for me the parallels are not “ej showed up for gina here and ricky didn’t” or “ricky showed up for gina here and ej didn’t” but the circumstances of what they’re showing up to, their intentions, how it affects gina and her reaction to them, and ultimately what comes after them “showing up”. these are my following observations but feel free to disagree although it won’t change my mind.

airport:

- ej was free, and the only one with a car (does not mean he was obligated to show up but if anyone was to get her, it would have been him. it is a nice gesture nonetheless)

- ricky was not in the same state, dealing with his heartbreak, restoring his relationship with his mother

cast list:

- ej gives gina flowers and calls her a star. it’s actually very sweet of him, but then she tries to open up to him and he doesn’t listen as his anxiety is building up. due to that he doesn’t allow himself to have fun and spend the night with her

- ricky says he is proud of her. gina doesn’t share her insecurities with him like she would have done before because she believes it’s now something to share with her boyfriend

rcosl:

- ej is hiding the fact that he might not be able to spend next year with gina. gina expresses that they’re having vastly different summers. ej goes to ricky to understand why gina is upset

- ricky minds his own business throughout most of the episode, apologises to gina for being intense. gina opens up to him because the person she believes she should open up to does not open up to her nor has given her space to open up.

color war:

- ej reassures gina that he is trying his best to stay for gina and that’s why he has been distant. all gina wants is to spend the day together because this is something he loves to do. he doesn’t show up and that upsets her and yet she still prepares the sweetest gesture for him that he ends up rejecting

- ricky is there being supportive and making her laugh. he helps her with making a promposal for ej and leaves her happy with her boyfriend

camp prom:

- ej promises gina a dance. not only he rejects her when she asks, at the same time he manages to keep her hopes up that she will eventually get one. however he doesn’t show up for the dance. even worse, he doesn’t apologise at all.

- ricky makes sure she is okay and prioritises her feelings over his. he is there for her as much as she allows him to be.

as i said, i find it interesting that since the topic of “showing up” has been brought up in the show, each time ricky doesn’t show up is because he has no means to. which is widely different reasoning for ej not showing up, as for him it often has to do with decisions he makes himself. he is undeniably in immense pressure but at the end of the day he still chose what to prioritise and focus on. gina understood his responsibilities and was willing to work through it. all she really wanted was to be put first for once.

and as gina said, she deserves to be more than a “maybe”. which honestly i think it also links to ricky and gina. ricky needed to have closure with nini before allowing himself to accept the feelings he has for gina because she deserves more than just “what ifs” and “maybes”

Season 3 Episode 5 Thoughts

I have to start out by saying that this episode had such a high impact on me that I literally was not able to write these notes until the next day… So yeah that should explain a lot about how great this episode was

Let’s start off with sassy Gina. I think it is so fantastic how much she is using little comments and remarks to get back to EJ. It reminds me a lot of the last episode and how he was making little side remarks against Ricky. It’s almost like her subconscious way of showing him what he was doing to Ricky when he was mad. She was going to lash back the same

CARLOS’ NAILS I LOVE SM

Ricky breaking the 4th wall again by making eye contact with the camera 😭 pls

Also why does it make so much sense that Carlos was literally the only person to pull off the drama stunt with the rest of the cast? Like he really understands what makes good tv and I love that for him

Also the writing in this episode was 😙👌🏻 it was funny, romantic, dramatic, confusing and fast and everything else. It kept you on your toes and felt engaging every step of the way. The writers REALLY stepped up their game this season and it’s making the season feel whole and complete. I think some other story lines could be slightly more fleshed out but with the time constraints they had it was still done well

Kourtney saying “RCOSL” and Carlos getting annoyed gives me the same vibe as London and Mosby with the “PRNDL”

The fact that Gina said she CANT improvise and then she was asked to improvise in WDYKAL tells me it might not have been improv at all. She wasn’t improvising, she was acting out in vengeance. Which remembered what happened last time she couldn’t improvise and acted out instead? Mr Elton John got a drink dumped on his head at the dance in S1

And I LOVE that there is a water dumping parallel when Gina gets “upset” at Kourtney over her lines and gets to throw it again

Tbh I feel like anyone in this fandom would be fine if Sofia threw water at them

EJ is here for the wrong reasons??? Remember why Carlos casts these? Because he felt like they matched people’s personalities. I think this is a big ole red flag for p*rtwell. He’s in Gina’s life- at camp- for the wrong reasons. Maybe it’s to hold onto his past, not go to school, whatever… but that tells us he shouldn’t be there loud and clear

Ricky “I can hit him fr” 😭😭 pls my guy no need to be so eager

Also it’s been pointed out a million and one times but RICKY SAID HE LOVES GINA IN A NOT SO SUBTLE WAY. Like NO HESITATION. The minute Carlos said Ricky was mad Ej took the girl he loves Ricky was like “oh right gina!!” And then had to come back from it because he realized how quick he responded 😭😭

“He stole her- or WOULD HAVE stolen her in a fake scenario” 🤪😳🫢

And the held a torch to her for YEARS?? Um hello this implies Ricky has had feelings since the beginning?? Which in many cases Ej and Nini saw in s1. Like the scene where they hugged or Ej asked if gina cared about Ricky. EJ knows the feelings have always been there

Ricky b*tch slapping EJ is EVERYTHING to me. I shouldn’t promote violence BUT

And then him saying that was his motivation and asking to slap him again I’m DEAD

FREAKING CARLOS PUSHING THE MADDOX AND JET IN LOVE AGENDA SIR YOU DONT UNDERSTAND WHY ITS SO WRONG

Also him doing labor breathing to calm down 😭 call the police

A parallel I just realized: when Kourtney and Carlos asked Gina and Ricky a question all they needed was one question to come completely clean about how they felt and what was stressing them. It’s interesting they responded the same way to their friends

Like this whole episode was peak comedy but Channing and Carlos had me ROLLING the entire time. So so good 😂😂

Maddox’s squeal when she fake cries 😭 and then Carlos “IVE BEEN SLAPPED 😦” GOLD

When Gina and Ricky are talking backstage by Carlos you hear Gina do this little flirty “yeahhh 😏” and it’s very much giving the same vibes as them in the woods

Did anyone else notice that Ricky has the EXACT same look on his face when Carlos says, “remember you still have unresolved feelings for Gina” as when she brings up the chocolates?? (Yes I’m a chocolate truther sue me)

How does 10 to 1 mean peeing in Hollywood? 😗 am I missing something?

The evil look gina has when Carlos tells her to have fun torturing EJ 😭

And every person who has made the lights comparison is so so right and for what

Gina throwing Ricky around as a rag doll with no remorse and him enjoying it is EVERYTHING to me

ALSO DONT FORGET THIS WAS ALL SUPPOSED TO BE IMPROVISED. THEY DID THIS ON THEIR OWN, NO DIRECTION, JUST THEIR OWN NATURAL INCLINATIONS. JUST LET THAT SINK IN

The vocals, the choreo, the other actors reactions, the CHEMISTRY… everything about this song is literally so good. And it all built up to this??? Like it’s not out of nowhere but years of waiting and build up and at the end the tension is so high it literally causes Gina to run out of fear because she doesn’t know what else to do but panic???? Like hello???!!!

If you’re not on the Bird app or if you haven’t gotten a chance to listen to their vocals isolated please do it. It is so worth your time

This song really truly deserves every praise it’s received and will continue to receive. Timberly and the others really outdid themselves this episode and for what

Me talking about Rina: don’t get me started

“Heart wrenching honestly” 🥺🥺🥺 that really was so hard for him and you could see it the whole time in his performance he just wants to love Gina so badly ughhhhh

Ricky even apologized for being too intense? Like he knew he went full throttle in that performance because it probably was the only time he was allowed to without EJ saying something. I’m sure he took that opportunity and ran with it… no matter how painful

RICKY JUST SAY WHAT YOU FEEL WE’RE ALL BEGGING 😭😭

Also those were heart eyes if I’ve EVER seen them holy crap

I actually have a lot more I want to say on this scene but I want to make a separate post about it

THE PARALLEL SCENE OF THEM WALKING IN A ROOM IT ALL HURTS SO MUCH

this scene was so much because everything comes out in different ways and to have that many reveals in one sitting can be not overwhelming for the characters but the audience watching as well

Not Maddox just calling Ashlyn out like that 😭 but also she never denied it… so??? 😳🏳️‍🌈

I don’t know if this was supposed to be taken as a funny thing or not… But I find it really interesting that Ricky needed to lay down when Jet and Maddox were yelling so much of each other? It seemed like he was almost having some flashbacks to things that made him upset and his anxiety started to heighten reliving that trauma over again? Because not only did his parents fight like this but he also fought with Nini like this… it just seems like a trauma response for him to literally shut down so I’m not surprised he felt the need to lay down during all of that

But also on a lighter note it’s so funny how the kids are all yelling and everything is serious and then Carlos gets completely caught up on EJ not being Eric Junior and Ricky missing everything to yell about Maddox and jet being siblings completely out of context help 😭😭

And ok I’m not going to go TOO in on this because it’s been discussed a lot but there has been a lot of discussion around Ricky having regression (which is not true at all… look at other posts about this to get more context), but isn’t it interesting that Gina says OUTLOUD, “this is what the old Ej would do”. She is literally pointing out that him not being honest and hiding himself is a form of him regressing as a character. I’m really interested to see how the writers bring him out of this

I saw someone post about Ricky saying when you can’t find the words you just sing instead might be him hinting at singing Kristoffs lullaby and I LOVE THIS SM. But also I can’t tell what I would love more? If he is singing this off in a distance and pining at Gina or singing it to her 😭 both would be beautiful tbh

RICKY HAS A CRUSH ON GINA I STILL CANT BELIEVE THIS IS CANON ON SCREEN OUT LOUD ITS-

But also when he puts his head in his hands after getting caught speaking outloud. Like boy knows he done messed up. I am REALLY curious what they’re doing with that footage. Either Gina will see it on purpose, on accident, or it’ll get deleted but she’ll still find out anyway through word of mouth and I don’t care how but I love that somehow Ricky is gonna get CAUGHT

You can see he is trying SO HARD to avoid his feelings being known and he literally can’t. I think this is where the line from Val earlier about not being able to hide your love and it comes out in other ways comes in. He literally cannot keep others from seeing it and finding out which is frustrating him beyond belief. Enough people are seeing, noticing, saying things though that at this point… I’m sorry buddy there is nothing that can be hidden

Why does jet singing in that jacket at the piano remind me of the Gorilla from SING 😂😂😂

Bu that aside lmao I love this song. It’s implications with the kids around him and him looking with admiration at younger Maddox says a lot about their relationship. He just wants what is best for her through his actions and it showed so poorly. He feels so much regret even though he wanted to do everything right. Just a lot of misunderstanding and heart ache which I think sums up a lot of the relationships in this season as well

Ok who tf is EJ calling? I think it’s easy to assume it’s his dad but I don’t know that that is actually who he is calling and why? Is it to leave? Create more drama? Heal something that he feels or needs to be healed? I’m just very curious about who might be coming

I really wish that in the initial conversation, EJ had apologized to Gina for keeping the letter and the Success School a secret and took accountability. He could��ve promised to not keep any secrets and explained how he planned to tell her before the RCOSL happened and how he wanted to wait to tell her until he fixed it. Right now, Gina is just seeing it as another thing kept from her and that he confided to another girl to.

This change could’ve been a HUGE step in their communication and in how they could move forward in their relationship, but NO, they’re probably going to break up after a small miscommunication. I really wish the writers could’ve shown us how healthy communication can happen after blowouts occur.

035; the real campers of shallow lake

summary: the one where ej and andy get to spend time together in the camp until the production gets in the way, threatening to ruin their summer and relationship

A frustrated Andy walked into the barn with the others to see EJ, Carlos and Val standing at the front.

EJ smiled at her and she gave a half hearted smile back. She hadn't been able to talk to him about the letter yet but would do it after the rehearsal.

She had tossed and turned all night about it. She couldn't understand why he would tell Val about it instead of her, they used to tell each other everything.

"Thanks for coming in early guys. We've We've working on a way to save the show and give Corbin and that Channing guy the reality style juice they want," Carlos explained as he gestured to a board.

"I'm sorry, save the show?" Gina questioned, looking up at the three confused.

"He just wants a little more excitement from us, a little mo-" EJ started but Carlos cut him off.

He cut him off, "He thinks we're boring!" everyone gasped, shocked as to how he could think that, "He's actually missing our rehearsal to scout out the kids at deep lake camp in Temecula,"

Carlos looked at the board, pulling off a slide, "But not to worry, we have a plan and it starts with 5 letters," he explained, "The real campers of shallow lake, RCOSL,"

"You know how normally we act like regular people, we pick up on social cues and care about feelings?" EJ explained. He knew this was his last chance to prove to his father that he could take a gap year and he wasn't going to blow it.

"The key to any great reality show is the three Bs. Bombshells, betrayals and Bitch slaps," he explained.

Everyone gasped at the language they used, like it was a Disney channel show and squaring was prohibited, "Can he say that?" Gina questioned.

"Look, I love the housewives more than anyone but how are we gonna pull this off when we're real students who don't have millions to burn?" Kourtney asked, not understanding the logistics of the show.

Val turned over the board to show a bunch of squares with question marks drawn in them and labels underneath. Carlos read out all the names, explaining that was what made the perfect show.

"You Kourt, will be the Judgey one," Carlos said as Val placed a picture of Kourtney on the label.

Ricky signed, "But do we want to look like villains on TV?" He questioned and Andy agreed with him, voicing her concern.

Ricky was labelled the jilted ex, Ashlyn was the one with the dark past, Maddox was the cryer, Gina was the one with the catchphrase, EJ was here for the wrong reasons, Andy is his high school romance, Vals the shrink, Jets the bad boy and Carlos is the instigator.

"I know that was a lot but did everyone get that?" He asked and everyone nodded, about to get up when he continued talking, "Good, cause there's more,"

Carlos walked back before quickly grabbing a clipboard with four goals written on it, "Someone needs to run out crying, someone needs to get slapped, someone needs to throw a drink at someone and someone needs to get caught on a hot mic,"

"Channings coming in fifteen," Val said and everyone got ready for the performance of their lives.

By the time he got there, everyone was ready for the first song they were doing, a little bit of you with the two children who were playing the younger Anna and Elsa.

Carlos caused fake drama as the instigator and the kids didn't understand, having not been invited to the pre rehearsal meeting.

They all managed to fulfill their roles throughout the day. Gina and Kourtney started a fight which ended in the first tick box of the day (throwing water on someone) which made Carlos' day.

Maddox cried and Jet tried to be a bad boy but it didn't go well - he wasn't great at the role. Kourtney was judgier than usual and of course Andy and EJ had to pretend everything was okay.

For him it was but for Andy it wasn't. She couldn't find the right time to pull him aside and talk about it but bottling up all of her anger and sadness was driving her crazy.

The day felt like it went slowly due to the added pressure of the secret weighing on her. She had to find out what it was about.

Andy hoped it was just them miscommunicating but she was going through so much right now that she couldn't deal with him being halfway across the country when she needed him most.

The group all stood together at the end of the day in front of Channing, hoping that he would approve the show to keep running.

"Well, I underestimated you guys," he said, sighing his bag over his shoulder, "What a mess, in an award winning way,"

Once he left everyone cheered, proud that they had managed to save the show by creating even more drama in the group.

Andy didnt feel like celebrating though, she still felt the heavy weight of knowing EJ's secret. She didn't think he'd do something like that to her.

He quickly rushed back in, announcing that he had forgotten about the group photo.

Everyone quickly got back into position and because of their overly romantic part to play, Channing placed EJ and Andy together, not noticing the tension between the two.

"Pretty boy in the bottom, get a little closer to her, yeah, perfect," He said as EJ wrapped his arm around her, her head stiffly falling on his shoulder.

"All right smile guys, we're almost home," EJ said enthusiastically to the group.

Andy scoffed, "Almost home as in salt lake or Saint Louis?" She whispered so only he would hear, looking up at him.

At that moment, Channing snapped the photos, taking a few more. To anyone else it might look like two lovers staring into each others eyes but it was a lot more then that.

EJ tried to smile but he couldn't help but feel the guilt of knowing he'd been caught as he realised he should have told her earlier

"Thanks again, the Bleu man's gonna be so happy," Channing said before he walked out, taking his camera with him.

The couple stood up, walking away and the group started to bicker, Val stepping in to try to calm the group.

The group gasped as they found out that Maddox and Jet were ziblings seconds before Jet stormed out of the room.

"I have done a terrible thing!" Announced Carlos, realising hes been shipping the two.

EJ walked over to Andy, "Whatever you saw in the letter, it's not what it looks like," he promised

She chuckled, "St Louis Caswell? I thought we were spending this year together, we were gonna go to college together," Andy said, frustration evident in her voice.

"And we will. Dad wants me to go to caswell success school but if this musical works out I can change his mind, for us," he said, "I'm not leaving without a fight,"

Andy sighed, feeling defeated, "I told you something that I'd been keeping from you and you couldn't even admit to this, I gave you every opportunity," she explained.

"Elton John Caswell, I am so disappointed in you," Ashlyn said and everyone gasped at the reveal of EJs real name. If Andy wasn't mad at him she would have laughed but instead she turned away from him.

"I need you at home right now Caswell. I need to be able to come back to something that I know will be there," she said, tears welling up in her eyes.

It was breaking his heart to look at her like this, to see her so upset, "I'm going to make it work, you know my dad's an ass, but I can prove that I'm good enough for you," he explained.

"I need some air," she said, turning the other way and running out of the barn, the doors slamming closed behind her.

"Andy, please," he called out, watching as Maddox ran out after her.

Maddox found Andy sitting on a bench by the edge of the field. EJ had taken her to it on the first day to watch the fireflies.

"You okay there?" She asked, coming to sit down on the bench next to her hesitantly.

"Yeah, I just needed some time to cool down before I kill him," she joked, chuckling half heartedly.

Maddox smiled before looking over at Andy, "He loves you. I've never seen him look so happy. He's made mistakes before but he's leant from them and he'll learn from this," She said.

Andy nodded along to her words, "My mums ill, and I don't want to really tell anyone but I told him because I needed support. He could have gotten support from me for this, not run to Val,"

"I'm sorry," Maddox said, placing a hand on her shoulder, "And EJ probably doesn't want to be a burden. I'm sure he's felt that way for his family and sees himself as in the way. Maybe try to see his side of it?"

Andy chuckled, "You're really good at the whole shrink thing, might take Vals role," she joked.

Maddox laughed, "And have her be the one that cries all the time, I can't have my spotlight taken like that," she joked, the two girls laughing.

Andy was glad she had gotten everything she felt off of her chest and she felt ready to talk to EJ about it all and get it all out of the way. She wanted to be with him and wasn't going to let this stop her.

The two girls talked for ages about deep subjects like their fractured home lives and silly things

For a minute everything felt like it was just a normal day and it was the camp she had wanted to go to from the start
