So, this is the first self portrait I’ve uploaded in over a decade. It’s one of less than a dozen (probably less than half a dozen even) selfies I’ve taken in total over that time period.

I have an... let’s call it an aversion to taking and more importantly sharing photographs of myself. I wouldn’t call it a phobia though, as I don’t actively fear my image being taken or being shown, I just don’t like it. But either way, like a phobia, I know that my reasons for this aversion are, for the most part, irrational.

I don’t know really what I want this post to say, except to have a pretty normal and up to date selfie on my tumblr blog; so I guess there is that.

On a more technical note, I did at least enjoy the stuff between taking the photo and posting it here. I took this photo on my phone, as a DNG, so I had fun playing with RawTherapee and GIMP. Hopefully my executive dysfunction will let me take and post more photo’s.

Rawtherapee redo

Pro přidání dalších formátů stačí přidat příslušný MIME typ do lib/mimetypeutils.cpp. Patch nyní podporuje formáty Nikon NEF/NRW, Canon CR2/CRW, Pentax PEF, Sony ARW, Fuji RAF, Olympus ORF, Minolta MRW, Panasonic RW2, Samsung SRW a univerzální Adobe DNG. Podpora RAWů, která se objeví v chystaném GwenView 4.13, využívá KDcraw a jeho extrakci JPEG náhledu embeddovaného v RAWech, nebo načte preview z RAWu o polovičním (čtvrtinovém) rozlišení. Jak autoři samo konstatují, od toho jsou tu povolanější programy jako digiKam, darktable či RawTherapee. Patch samozřejmě nedělá žádný demosaicing či jakékoli úpravy RAWu, nestane se z GwenView další RAW developer postavený nad dcrawem, jen umožní zobrazovat snímky z RAWů. Martin Kyral již do projektu přispěl potřebným kódem, který dává programu schopnost zobrazovat všechny RAWy, které podporuje dcraw. Naprosto báječné je, že autoři konečně přidají podporu pro RAW formáty, které v GwenView chybí. Značně pročištěno bylo i samostatné okno s meta informacemi, kde se již nemusí uživatel probírat spoustou irelevantního balastu. Novinkou je přepracované GUI, kde postranní lišta s meta informacemi dostala nové formátování, které je sice méně úsporné, ale polovina textu již není utopena mimo tuto oblast. GwenView pokročilo spolu s desktopovým prostředím KDE SC 4.12 na verzi 4.12. Všechny významné RAW nástroje (darktable, RawTherapee, Photivo) přišly s novou verzí, dvakrát povýšil i GIMP, GwenView chystá podporu RAWů, je zde zbrusu nový Hugin i VueScan. Od posledního dílu našeho seriálu došlo ke značnému vývoji v řadě linuxových aplikací pro fotografie.

program that everyone hates because it's awful, barely has half the features of photoshop, doesnt even have adjustment layers or good layer masking and shit but everyone still recommends for some reason (GIMP)

program that's really good, but is more focused towards digital art rather than photo editing, not what im looking for (Krita)

program thats trying to be illustrator, and not photoshop (Inkscape)

program thats trying to be lightroom, and not photoshop (Darktable, Shotwell, RawTherapee)

online editors that do the job pretty well but you have to use it in a browser and they show you ads and half the keyboard shortcuts don't work and some of them require subscriptions to export (Photopea, Pixlr)

Before going to the beach yesterday a few Ravens flew over me. With the sun in between us it was going to be impossible to get a well lit shot. What's interesting about .CR2 files is that they hold a ton of data and you can get some interesting results with RawTherapee. Image on the left is the original and on the right is after tweeking it in RawTherapee. Still not a good photo but neat that all that detail was still captured, including the Raven's iris. I can't say for certain due to the exposure but it's possible that this is a young Raven since there is still pink around their mouth.

Does anyone have opinions on photo organisation programs? I have ~12,500 images on my pc that need organising, and the main thing I'd want is being able to tag and rate images, plus ideally the capability to treat a jpg and the associated RAW file as one image, so deletions, tags and ratings apply to both files.

I am unwilling to pay monthly, so Lightroom is out, and neither of the free RAW editors I've tried (rawtherapee, darkroom) attempt to recreate my camera's (very reasonable) interpretation and make me start every picture edit from a much worse baseline, which means they're not going to be my one stop shop for organising plus editing either - which isn't necessary; if I could easily do the two tasks in two programs I'd be happy too.
