“Farewell, Timothy Riley’s Bar," Lane said softly. "Home of the nickel beer. Snooker emporium. Repository of Bluebird records, three for a dime. We honor you and your passing. Farewell. Farewell, Timothy Riley—and terraplanes and rumbleseats and saddle shoes and Helen Forrest and the Triple-C camps and Andy Hardy and Lum ‘n’ Abner and the world-champion New York Yankees! Rest in peace, you age of innocence—you beautiful, serene, carefree, pre-Pearl Harbor, long summer night. We’ll never see your likes again.” ― Rod Serling, Rod Serling's Night Gallery

“At 1:23pm Zeros were approaching Pearl Harbor where it was 7:53am. At that moment the flight commander radioed Admiral Nagumo TORA, TORA, TORA@ The repeated code word, meaning "tiger," stood for 'We have succeeded in surprise attack'." Two minutes later torpedo bombers began diving on Battleship Row.” ― John Willard Toland, Infamy: Pearl Harbor and its Aftermath

“I thought of a remark . . . that the United States is like a 'gigantic boiler. Once the fire is lighted under it there is no limit to the power it can generate.' Being saturated and satiated with emotion and sensation, I went to bed and slept the sleep of the saved and thankful.” ― Winston S. Churchill

224 - The Man in the Iron Mask
Tumblr media
As Titanic continued its months-long reign at the box office, its closest challenger (before Lost in Space would dethrone it, that is) at the multiplex starred none other than one of its star-crossed lovers. Yes, Leonardo DiCaprio owned the box office in the weeks ahead of Titanic’s Best Picture win, pulling double double duty as evil King Louis XIV and his dungeon-cast identical twin in The Man in the Iron Mask. The directorial debut of Braveheart’s Oscar-nominated screenwriter Randall Wallace, the film adapted Alexandre Dumas’ novel and assembled an awards friendly ensemble for its musketeers: Jeremy Irons, Gerard Depardieu, John Malkovich, and (the somehow still un-nominated) Gabriel Byrne.
Poor reviews plagued the film on release, but DiCaprio’s appeal turned the film into a box office success. This episode, we talk about DiCaprio’s no-show Oscar attendance after being snubbed for Titanic and his career in the immediate years that followed. We also discuss Wallace’s dubious filmography, Titanic’s other box office challengers, and DiCaprio in a Baby Bjorn.
Topics also include Bryan Adams, COVID Pinocchio movies, and this year’s AARP Movies for Grownups nominees.

Films I've watched in 2022 (78/210)
I love this film. The costumes, the actors, the score, the buckling of swash, it all just makes for a properly good movie.
The rock solid foundation of this film is the casting of the Musketeers; they are on an absolute equal footing when it comes to gravitas and character. A feeling that any of them set up against the other would be a fair fight, one which outcome you couldn't predict in advance.
You simply can't go wrong with the casting of John Malkovich (Athos), Gérard Depardieu (Porthos), Jeremy Irons (Aramis) and Gabriel Byrne (D'Artagnan); they each bring so much to their roles, and, unlike in a lot of Musketeer films, they all feel equally important, like good friends with a symbiotic relationship; four essential quarters of a whole, rather than what it so often is: two or three really good ones and one or two who are very forgettable. (The 1993 version came close, but falls a bit flat with Chris O'Donnell's D'Artagnan.)
The less said about DiCaprio, the better...
And the final battle... Nope, I don't think I'll ever be over that.

Do you believe with the idea of heaven? For me, it's real. Definitely. But would believe if someone or anyone talks about in front of you. Probably not. We all have various beliefs and diverse culture. Sometimes it's hard to believe in something that you don't see or feel. We are made to be different and unique but equal when it comes to rights and disposition we attain. This film will teach you about how life would be different when you've got something to believe in to. I hope that everyone who are suffering right now, will continue to believe and not blame God.

Throughout the film, they all four are being defined by these four colour: Aramis - black, Porthos - red, Athos - green, d'Artagnan - blue. The conflict relies on the disparity between them; whenever they are not working together (as the whole group of four; the movie would have us believe they were all the closest of friends), they are shown in distinguished, different colours (even at the masked ball, each of them is defined by a single one, different from the rest). There is the obvious symbolism (red - passion, green - bucolic, black - secretiveness, blue - prudence), but what is more interesting is how do they all relate to the colour of the uniforms? D'Artagnan is wearing the blue of the new ones, his everyday coat looks almost exactly like his uniform and is an exact match of the shade. But it is not until the all wear the black of the old uniforms they are truly united again (what is very interesting is how no one told d'Artagnan they would be wearing them, yet he showed up all cald in black). And who was wearing black the whole time?...
Aramis is not only the true "glue" of the group in this movie, but the only one who kept true to their pasts. In this essay I will
