What is lichen? Seven types of lichen found on trees
Lichen is an association between a fungus and an algae and/or cyanobacteria, and both organisms benefit from the arrangement. While the latter two provide food, the fungus offers some protection from the environment.
Lichens can be seen on twigs or bark as well as other hard surfaces such as rock. They are non-parasitic and don’t harm the plants on which they grow. Here’s what you need to know about lichens and seven species you can see if you can spot.
