Punctelia borreri
Blinking speckleback lichen
This foliose lichen grows in rounded rosettes up to 10 cm in diameter. It has rounded, contiguous lobes which grow closely attached to the substrate. The upper surface is gray-green to place gray in color, and speckled with white, punctiform pseudocyphellae. It produces granular soredia out of those pseudocyphellae and out of capitate soralia. The lower surface is black toward the center and brown toward the lobe margins, with simple, black rhizines. It only very rarely produces apothecia which are bowl-shaped, and have a red-brown disc. P. borrei typically grows on the bark of deciduous trees in mild-temperate and humid climates. It is considered cosmopolitan as it is found pretty much all over. Also, here is a super cute historical drawing of it done in 1808 by Dawson Turner for its original description:

i like to think that the tentacles in dungeon meshi are kinda like mushrooms or perhaps even lichens in that they are very confusing to identifty and have 200 completely different species that look very similar ("delicious brown tentacle vs BROWN DEATH TENDRIL") and you need to be an Expert to determine the difference between some of the more confusing species and some of them have like 300 different sexes and some of them are actually composite creatures composed of several different species and somehow yeast is involved and also no one really knows half of whats going on with them and in like 50 years someones gonna figure out that uhm actually these are two completely different types of tentacle creatures that arent related like at All they jusf happen to look similar and oh btw that one common house mold is actually a tentacle

Okay but given that you can make alcohol from just about any plant, a world built around Minecraft could have SUCH a liquor cabinet.
You’ve got your basics, the potato and wheat vodka, gin, whiskey, then rum from sugarcane or beet sugar if you’re feeling a little adventurous.
Then you’ve got the fancier things. Dandelion and melon wine, spike vodka, pumpkin liqueur, applejack. Zhuyeqing jiu and chocolate liquor if you REALLY want to go for the cool stuff.
You’ve got mead and all kinds of moonshine, everything from carrots to kelp to sawdust brandy if you live out in the Badlands. Sunflower and rose spirits, lilac wine, even milk liquor and advocaat if you want to deviate from plants a bit.
But then you’ve got the plants that don’t exist in our sphere.
Chorus liqueur, dripleaf absinthe, glowberry champagne and sweet berry wine, glow lichen beer and crème de spore blossom, golden apple cider, glistering cordial. For the truly danger-seeking, wither rose lanique.

Your body isn’t a thing. It’s a process. A cycle of matter briefly taking a human shape before returning to the ground.
You add matter to it through what you ingest, you lose matter from it when your cells die. Matter that was once part of your flesh is now part of another living organism.
You aren’t an individual, you’re a collective. The same way a lichen is composed of different fungus, algae, yeast, bacterias and other micro organisms.
You are more other than human. There are more micro organisms in your body than human cells. About 8% of the dna in your own cells come from other organisms. There’s cells from your birther and their own birther living inside you.
Your microbiome influences not only what you can digest, your cravings and your hunger but your emotions, thoughts and behaviors as well. They produce 90% of all of your serotonin.
You’ve never been a fixed thing. You’re constantly growing and changing. You’re a constant process, a community, dirt rising and taking a shape before settling down again. You are the world having a human experience. You are nature.

Unfortunately it seems like there is a job opportunity coming up for me that is 1. Coming from 3 different people who like me a lot and all happen to work for the same company, 2. Not starting until april so i have no excuse not to get ready, and 3. Something i can 100% land and maintain with very little effort.
It's gonna kill my soul but I... think I have a job lined up. Ugh.

Cad’s new art by @littleulvar on twitter and his character description:
Caduceus Clay is a devout worshipper of the Wildmother who, as caretaker of a graveyard, aids others in dealing with the cycle of life and death. Deeply compassionate, optimistic, and gentle, he is a friend to all creatures, often politely chatting with the wildlife he encounters - be it plant of beast, whether they can chat back or not. He is known for his homespun wisdom and is considered a moral guide to the other members of the Mighty Nein. Caduceus uses his healing abilities to keep his friends and allies alive in battle, while also dealing divine punishment to evildoers when the occasion calls for it.

Phaeophyscia squarrosa
Scaly shadow lichen
Using this lichen for my regular reminder that lichens are NOT plants. Lichens are an association between an obligate fungal host (mycobiont) and one or more photosynthesizing partners (a green algae and/or a cyanobacteria). It is a fungus using unicellular organisms that photosynthesize so it can cosplay as a plant.

Watercolors made from ammonia fermented lichen that bears dye precursor acids, and boiled onion skins of differing pH. Pigma micron pen.
I imagine painting ammonia water directly onto the paper isnt ideal for archival quality, or the vinegar water either. But sometimes things are ephemeral and that's okay.
ammonia dyebath for the darkest purple, vinegar neutralized dyebath for a lighter purple, and then two shades of yellow/orange/tannish for the two onion pH results.
(obligatory chemical disclaimer, don't go mixing chemicals even if theyre common household chemicals, you never know what they might turn into)
