gossipgirl  they say springtime is a season for rebirth and new beginnings. for some it's a chance to turn over a new leaf. for others, it's the surprise of seeing something bloom. but for yours truly, it's a reminder that here in seoul, anything old can be new again. with the stage lights from fashion week dying down and cherry blossoms about to get their time in the sun, it's time for the annual gyeonggi goodwill benefit, where one person's clandestine gathering of elite corporate evil is another family's bonding weekend. i hear the family hosting it this year is that of our dearest it girl. it's for a good cause—so who cares how much trouble you cause? see you there!

ic context
gyeonggi goodwill benefit - (commonly known as ‘bonding for billionaires’), this is a weekend-long event held in gyeonggi every year to raise funds for the year's selected charity of choice. though it’s a little known event to the public as it is a very private gathering of elites, to the upper echelon of seoul this is a landmark in the yearly social calendar. really, what it is is a thinly veiled excuse for seoul’s 1% to rub elbows and talk shit about everyone else and each other.
this event is a decades-old tradition that started in gyeonggi girls' high school and soon included all nearby schools. every year, it's hosted by one family of a student or alumni from a school in or near gyeonggi. it's held in the spring, with the main event being a cherry blossom viewing in yangpyeong park. tickets are expensive; attendees have to be the parents of/students or alumni of included schools, though they are allowed to bring their own guests. all ticket sales and proceeds from the event are donated to charity. there are many scheduled activities throughout the weekend.
among the students and alumni of gyeonggi girls' high school and included schools, the benefit is infamous for being a hotbed of scandal, illicit activity, debauchery and depraved behavior. (the viral gossip girl video from 2013 was said to have been shot on the last day of the benefit, though this was never confirmed to the media. but yes, it was shot on the last day of this benefit in 2013.)
SCHEDULE
day 1 - march 24
hotel pick up and drop off through the morning. it is a two-hour car ride from seoul to the hotel. most guests arrive at the hotel before lunch. some prefer to bring their own cars. parents are typically present on day one, but most leave on day two.
welcome lunch, with opening remarks by the host family, announcement of the charity (this year, it's for a nonprofit providing child care services to low income families), a cheerful cherry blossom forecast (this year it's march 26), and a brief overlook of the weekend's activities.
guests are encouraged to join the day tour, which includes car service and professional tour guides. it starts with a picturesque stroll through dumulmeori (where various stalls feature local stores partnered with the benefit), an optional stay at the famous dream cafe, and ends with a sunset watching and dinner cruise through han river.
day 2 - march 25
there is no planned tour, but guests are given a number of things to do. there's jebu island sightseeing via cable car, which is highly suggested during sunset. guests can hop on a 4.3 km journey on the uiwang railbike, which will take them through seven different breathtaking sceneries around wangsong lake. some choose to take the trip to the rocky jebu beach and spend the entire day there. at night, most guests gather at starlight village, which is closed for members of the benefit on this day. towards the end of the night, there's a coordinated lights and fireworks show.
day 3 - march 26
there is no planned tour. many guests go to gwangmyeong cave or walk through hwadam forest in the morning, or rest in their rooms until the scheduled cherry blossom viewing at yangpyeong park in the afternoon. (it’s unspoken tradition to bring a date, and people tend to dress up.) at night, there is a farewell dinner, where the host gives their final remarks. guests then retire to their rooms. while some rest until the morning, others break off into infamous and mythic private parties within their suites.
ooc info
this event is optional and open to all muses.
you may start interactions about this event until march 31.

wanted to flesh out some connections before i delved into the ongoing event! came up with some plot ideas (might add more when i get a better idea of his connections) which i'll leave below the cut — feel free to hit me up if you'd like to take on any, or if you just want to plot if we haven't already!
things are pretty hectic for him this month, a lot of past connections returning to haunt him, rumours surrounding these reconnections and all so, i plan to have him show up for this event without a date but
we can have an ex he recently broke up with who will be attending the event (lots of room for awkward run-ins)
someone new he meets at the event that he ends up flirting with? nothing serious but they just really hit it off and end up going for a dinner or stroll together (something about the cherry blossoms make for a good romantic set-up)
DAY 01
jaerim would be very interested in this year's charity, since it's childcare related (he volunteers at children's charity organisations) so he would want to show up for the lunch
we could do a carpool situation? maybe your muse needed transport to the event (to avoid traveling with their family or for whatever reason) and his fancy car ain't a bad option. could have them meet with some situation on the way there and show up fashionably late halfway through the welcome lunch, walk in with everyone staring at them? maybe even have them wonder if your muse is his date for the event?
i think he'd really dig the sunset watching and dinner cruise so maybe a date for that? or an unintentional date of sorts? like they got lost or left behind because they were bickering over something and everyone else had left by the time they were done so they were on their own and the view was too good to pass off (could work for platonic connections too!) (shiah)
DAY 02
feel like it'd be fun for him to get stuck on a cable car ride with an ex or enemy of sorts e.g. "we need to talk", "but people will see us", next moment one of them drags the other into the cable car
not really a railbike kinda guy (unless you convince him?) but he would be lounging at the beach so anyone spending their time there could bump into him. beachside cocktails and provocatively applying sunscreen? hit him the hell up
i see him being forced to mingle with people during the dinner and fireworks show so bring on any drama with past connections
or someone that gets way too drunk and ends up being his burden to care for that night (won)
DAY 03 (FULL)
a date for the cherry blossoms viewing (seryung)
i'd imagine that would cause some drama with some of his past romantic connections which is a good set-up for that night's partying (people go feral when they're drunk and i'm here for it) (seulki)
this is likely to be a stressful event for him so he will be ending it off with lots of alcohol (raon)
maybe even hook up with someone at the end of the night (in true gossipgate fashion, day 3 always ends with chaos) (raon)
if none of these work, i'm down to brainstorm and come up with something fun for our muses! click here for my intro if you need more information about jaerim. anything else, feel free to drop me a message on ims or discord!

okayyy i think i've finally replied to everyone (please. nudge me if that's not the case lol) & so i'd love to get some interactions going!
i'll have a couple of event plot ideas under the cut (thank u to hyojin's mun for the idea!) and my end goal is *olivia rodrigo vc* i want it to be like messy.
day 1
she's going to be so very stressed on day 1. travelled with her parents (she can't drive...legally. L) & was subjected to 2hrs worth of 'why on earth did you pick art as ur major', 'when are you planning on settling down', and 'you look like you've gained weight.' the ush. by the end of lunch, she's just about rdy to commit murder. instead of that, though, she heads off to join the day tour to escape.
walking ard dumulmeori tgt! yes u will be eating everything she orders because she takes One (1) bite and then gives the rest to u. her feet will end up hurting because of her ridiculous shoes and who will have run 2 a pharmacy/convenience store for band-aids? that's right. u.
getting dressed together for the dinner cruise! heading to her watery demise.. but at least she's cute <3
dinner will Not be fun (no she will not elaborate) so she will be taking full advantage of the open bar.
day 2
room service + recovering from the night before = don't expect her out of bed before 2pm.
her parents will be leaving (thank the lord) after a 7am go on the railbike. it's so clear to u that haerin has not slept a wink and is so caffeinated it's concerning. she offers u sunscreen and the entire tube ends up splorging out onto ur palms and outfit. please drive her back to the hotel.
your cable car breaks down and haerin's LAUGHING. you two are stranded in a vigorously shaking death trap god knows how high up and she's LAUGHING. would be fun if we added a can-you-keep-a-secret-esque element to it where ur muse starts confessing every embarrassing secret they've ever had. optional, though!!
off she heads to starlight village! after the fireworks show, she's heading to jebu beach--- what can i say, she's #notliketheothergirls. she rationalises it as her hating the sun & enjoying the cold weather. come with? meet her there & have her think you're a ghost? either way, u guys are the only people on a beach at 2am.
day 3
she's going to the cherry blossom viewings without a date... no she doesn't care if gossip girl calls her celibate again! any girlies want to make it a girls' day <3 (open 2 multiple hehe)
skipping the farewell dinner to cut the cals + get ready for the real party. if ur muse is at a party, so is she! let's go from there.
ofc, none of these r set in stone n r just jumping off points, and i'd love to discuss + brainstorm!

Tracing the old Burma Road
The disused Irish railway that runs from Claremorris, Co. Mayo via Kiltimagh and Charlestown to Colloney, Co. Sligo is known as the ‘Burma Road.’ This last saw trains in the mid-1970s, yet much of the track and right-of-way remains intact. A railbike operation is based at the old station in Kiltimagh. After St. Patrick’s Day, Kris and followed a portion of the Burma Road on our drive toward…

  Today’s Mistake- Losing my earbud
I have lost multiple earbuds, and that hurts. I drop them, they fall out of my bag, or I leave them behind. I recently purchased a more expensive brand of earbuds, so I hope that this will improve my sound quality and make me less likely to lose them. Do you have tips on this, too?
Today’s Travel Advice: For dry skin, use protection.
As the weather gets colder, my skin gets drier. I use more skincare products during the winter months. I use it on my fingernails, hands, and lips. Temporarily protect your cracked or chapped skin with a petroleum-based barrier. It will also protect your skin from cuts, scrapes, burns, and the drying effects of wind and cold weather. Don’t use this on deep wounds, animal bites or serious burns.

12/6/21 As controversy raged over the Skunk train land grab of the Ft Bragg mill site, we decided to try the railbike trip up the Noyo River. We hike a switch-backing trail from Sherwood Rd down to the east side of the collapsed tunnel. 15 mile RT out to Camp Noyo for a picnic lunch. Mushrooms plentiful. Pedaling the rail bike then Hike back up the trail made for an excellent workout. 10-3. At $75/local person was a very reasonable price. $250 for non local seems a bit steep. An intimate access to redwoods and Noyo River was a pleasure. This could be an excellent opportunity for teaching about this ecosystem.

Route Review: Railriders Cycling: Joseph Branch, Oregon
Tumblr media
Running on the tracks of the Joseph Branch of the Wallowa Union Railroad, Railrider Cycling: Joseph Branch has offered railbike excursions in and around Joseph, Oregon since 2015. The three routes currently on offer collectively form one of three operations in the Northwest established by Kim and Anita Metlen, the pioneers of organized railbiking in Oregon and Washington. I rode the two routes described below on the weekend of June 16th and 17th, 2019, they have already added another.
Vitals
Phone: (541) 786-6149 or (541) 605-8295
Website: https://jbrailriders.com/
Check-in Locations
Jospeh to Enterprise: 501 W Alder Street, Joseph, OR
Minam to Wallawa and Minam to Rondowa: 72601 Highway 82, Minam, OR
The Site
Railrider Cycling: Joseph Branch offers three separate and distinct rides, each on a regular schedule.
Tumblr media
Check-in for the Joseph to Enterprise ride is at a baby-barn office on the edge of Joseph (see Travel Notes below for more details), where I was greeted by the Site Manager Robert Nichols and a Guide named Marshall, a true local whose family also offers horseback excursions in the surrounding mountains.
The Minam to Wallowa ride starts from a turnoff along Oregon Route 82, beside the Minam Store outfitter. I was the only rider on the day I pedalled this route, and my guide Zane was a young, fit football player just out of high school. We surely broke the course record that day.
Since my time there, they’ve added a third route from Minam to Rondowa, running in the opposite direction as the Minam to Wallowa ride.
As noted above, the three routes described here are part of a larger family of railbike tours founded by Kim and Anita Metlen, who deserve great admiration for the work they’ve done to promote cycling and recreation in the Northwest.
The Site Manager Robert Nichols notes that, “our branch options are so much fun because they are such a simple and enjoyable way to get away from it all. A few minutes of pedaling and you can escape the day to day craziness and enter into peaceful wilderness.”
The Routes
The Joseph to Enterprise 12-mile (19.3 km) round-trip runs through open farmland surrounded by the snow-capped Wallowa Mountians. The Minam to Wallowa 26-mile (42 km) round-trip runs through the Wallowa River canyon and includes a lunch break in Wallowa. On each route, riders can expect to see local fauna; I saw osprey, killdeer, deer, and snakes.
Tumblr media
(Joseph to Enterprise)
Tumblr media
(Minam to Wallawa)
The line was initiated in 1890 by the Oregon Railway Extensions Company as a branch from the Union Pacific mainline from La Grande to Elgin, then extended to Joseph in 1905-1908 by the Oregon Railway & Navigation Company, totaling 63 miles (101 km). The line was intended to move timber from the dense forests of the region, but passenger service was offered as well. Ownership of the line was eventually transferred by consolidation to the Union Pacific Railroad in steps in 1910 and 1936, which operated mixed freight and passenger service until the 1960s (see the image just below) and freight from local timber operations until it was sold as a shortline to Rio Grande Pacific in 1993. In 2003, Elgin to Joseph tracks came under the ownership of the newly formed Wallowa Union Railroad Authority, which currently oversees freight and Eagle Cap excursion trains and, of course, railbikes.
Tumblr media

The Vehicles
Tumblr media
While all of the Railriders Cycling sites use a variant of the Railriders aluminum-framed and polyurethane-wheeled concept, Joseph Branch stands out in that they only run two-seater tandem vehicles. Site Manager Robert Nichols described some of the modifications they made to the original design, which are generally found in the nuts-and-bolts details providing increased reliability with decreased maintenance. Robert also notes that, “our retractable seatbelts are really handy, and...our brakes and the placement of where we have the handle works well and is convenient for our guests.”
See the image below of the Joseph to Enterprise guide vehicle, which has been outfitted with electric assist (compare to the vehicles at the Skunk Train). Also of interest is that Railriders Cycling sourced their own wheels. When writing about railbiking in Buffalo Creek, West Virginia, I noted that they had replaced the front wheels with cast-iron Speeder wheels to prevent them from climbing up the tracks and derailing in tight curves. This was accomplished on the Minam to Wallowa route by molding a harder compound of polyurethane (below in orange).

Travel Notes
I visited Joseph as part of a trip through the Northwest, from the Amtrak stop in Pasco, Washington and the neighboring Tri-Cities and inland port on the Columbia River. While Greyhound offers service to Joseph, neither transit nor cycling fit into my tight weekend schedule, so I opted to travel the 292-mile (470 km) round trip by rental car. The scenery along the ride was impressive, through farmlands, forest, high-desert scrub, around the the majestic Nine Canyon Wind Farm, and ultimately along the tracks of the Joseph Branch.
Joseph, formally a city of population 1,081 (what we’d call a hamlet in NY), is at the core of a region rich in outdoor activity, including hiking and horseback riding in the Wallowa Mountains, boating in Wallowa Lake, and fishing and kayaking on local rivers. I also saw rodeo grounds by the start of the railbike tour. The city caters well to visitors and includes art galleries, cafes and beerhalls and was recognized by the New York Times as the Oregon town to “try next.” From experience, I can recommend the Stein Distillery and the Jennings Hotel, which I booked on AirBnB.
6 miles (10 km)  south of Joseph is is the must-see, must-do, must-ride Walowa Lake Tramway aerial cable car 3700 ft (1128 meter) ascent to the top of Mount Howard. Beyond the outdoor restaurant atop one can find paths leading to views of the lake and surrounding mountains, plus joyful creatures looking for treats.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Back in the Tri-Cities, I enjoyed cycling on the paved trails along the Columbia River around Clover Island in Kennewick, Washington. I left the area on the Amtrak Empire Builder to Portland, overlooking the impressive staircase of hydroelectric dams on the  Columbia River.
