So, “Vikings” keeps being the gayest tvshow in history without actually being gay (I know many people ship Ragnar and Athelstan, but just as it was, their relationship was perfect. They loved each other and it’s not even subtext, but it’s genuine love, sexual or not. Suck that, Mofftiss)

For me Athelstan and Ragnar remainded pending. It was a unfulfilled love, just that. It’s perfect already as a friendship, but there are so many things in the tvshosw that insinuate another thing, especially that scene in 3x04 when Athelstan talks first with Ecbert and Lagertha and then with Ragnar. At that point, Athelstan has already been with Judith and he’s struggling because of it. That’s the straight interpretation, but for me he’s struggling to stay or not because he’s in love with two people, just like Ecbert and just like Ragnar. Remember, we are in a tvshow where polyamorous love is seen as normal -or threesomes at least- , as it should be in real life because we are polygamous people. Ecbert is in love with Athelstan for me at this point, and also with Lagertha. Lagertha and him have had sex already even - I say “even” because love without sex can exist- . And Ragnar is (?) in love with Lagertha and Athelstan. The level of sexual attraction might be different tho. I’ve always seen Athelstan and Ragnar’s relationship as a non-sexual relationship (potentially) in my mind, if they would have resolved what they felt before both’s deaths. But they certainly loved each other, and they needed each other’s company at an emotional, intellectual and even sensual level. Ragnar needed Athelstan’s more than viceversa, but that’s another matter...
I will transcript the scene where all this happens, in 3x04, with commentaries
Lagertha: Athelstan (she enters the shot where Athelstan is alone, thinking)
Ecbert: my friends (then proceeds to kiss both of them in the cheek. I know this is a poor proof, but they make a trio here with Ecbert in the middle, hugging them in the shoulder. He’s in love with both of them) The battle for Mercia is won. But not yet the settlement. Stay. Stay, both of you (THEY KEEP REPEATING THIS IN THE SHOW, OMG, “STAY, PLEASE”, “I WANT YOU TO STAY”, “You must stay. I love you”, remember?). Oversee your future. What could be more important?
(Ragnar is more important, Ecbert. So sorry)
Lagertha: I have told you my decision. Perhaps Athelstan will stay.
Ecbert: will you? (To Athelstan)
(Athelstan doubts, a bit drunk, tho. Lagertha listens with attention).
Athelstan: I’m not sure. I’ve not discussed it with Ragnar
(Lagertha raises her head with a thoughful expression, may be annoyed)
Ecbert: Hm. Or with Judith (insinuating about it, talking to Lagertha, who gets perplexed, surprised by that. Athelstan frowns a bit surprised too, may be pretending. He and Lagertha exchange looks). My daughter in law has grown fond of you. I know it. She has told me. She sometimes uses you as a confessor. If you go, she will miss you. As indeed will I.
(Ragnar, wearing a helmet, watches from a balcony of the hall, smiling like he always does. Athelstan realises and a bit scared puts his hand on Ecbert to make him step aside. Walks towards Ragnar. Ragnar leans behind the balcony and Athelstan leans against the stone wall)
Ragnar: They are trying to make you stay?
Athelstan: Yes.
(Athelstan stares at Judith)
R: There’s something between you and that girl.
(Athelstan doubts)
A: Yes.
(Ragnar smiles with malice)
A: You don’t understand.
(I see him almost angry about it. I was never able to understand what made him angry. May be because he broke his vows and was ashamed of it in front of Ragnar, even tho he’s a viking now, or may be because he supposed that Ragnar saw it as a little affair while he did not)
R: Nobody understands.
(This is the one line that always stuck in my head. “Nobody understands” what? Also the sad stare of Athelstan after that, moving his head to the right near to Ragnar’s view is pretty telling. What is he thinking about? It gives so much space to interpretation, or may be it’s just that Athelstan is already afraid that Ragnar thinks he’s gonna leave him just like Lagertha did and he feels guilty about it)
(Ragnar takes off the helmet. They look at each other in the eyes)
R: We are all free to do as we please (It’s almost like a “You’re free to stay, I don’t care if you leave me but I care about it so much that it hurts, but you’re a free man, so I can’t force you to stay as I did once”)
A: Are we still talking about women?
(Athelstan knows what this is about)
R: Hmm (and smiles, almost sarcastic)
In this scene Ragnar was clearly afraid of losing Athelstan again over someone else. He already lost Lagertha and he almost lost Athelstan before. He even begged Athelstan to go back to Kattegat with him in season 2, and now he’s afraid to lose him again because of Ecbert.
But also for me it’s Ragnar’s frustration talking. Athelstan rejected him once because of his vows, and now Athelstan has slept with a woman breaking those vows, even tho he’s not a priest anymore -which is not true for me- . So Ragnar is frustrated and hurt and that’s why he says “We are all free to do as we please”.
And then after this scene comes the famous scene of Kwenthrith confessing to Lagertha and kissing her.
Why did they put that scene after that? WHY?? May be they wanted to say something through that!
PS: I always found Judith similar to Ragnar in looks. Both of them have these almost crazy eyes, too bright to be real -I’m sorry I live in a society of brown eyes, which are beautiful and warm, but Ragnar´s eyes are mesmerizing, and also Judith’s)
