Just a note because I've had some inquiries lately -- it's always fine to include more than one way to give when submitting an item for RFM! It's always best to have a crowdfund page of some kind (gofundme, fundly, etc) and only list a direct payment processor like paypal or venmo as a secondary, but including multiple payment methods is okay, as long as you don't mind your paypal/venmo/etc being public.

hi-this-is-ali-rae is getting top surgery, scheduled for January; they're preparing for the surgery and the healing after, and raising funds to cover out-of-pocket costs and make their recovery as comfortable as possible. You can read more and support the fundraiser here.

Anon linked to The Big Gay Market, a LGBTQ+ owned-and-operated pop up maker's market in Madison, Wisconsin, which has been in operation for nearly a year. They're looking to move into a bigger venue after receiving fantastic community support, and are crowdfunding via Kiva loan for a down-payment to reserve the space for their next market. (When you support organizations and people via Kiva it's a no-interest loan from you, so the money eventually comes back to the lender.) You can read more and contribute to the loan fund here.

nehirose's cat Winston had to go to the emergency vet last night for pyometra; they were able to get antibiotics and fluids, but she's fundraising for the visit fees and follow-up and spay with a non-emergency vet, which is a struggle with rent looming this week. Anon wanted to remind folks that the US government is offering another round of free COVID tests; you can order four tests per household, and if you didn't order tests in September during the previous round, you can order eight per household. @ryebecca I have to say would be Joel Miller. (I'm typing up my first Joel piece as we speak.) He's soft and kind, he loves hard and he's fiercely protective. His love language is making you happy and for you, I know that's books and tea. He'd build you a house around a library with his own hands because that's how he is. And in turn, you'd read to him from your favorite Jane Austen books while playing with his hair and explaining the complexities of the work.

@blue-aconite Fe is definitely Valkyrie. A risk taker who's had her heart broken that falls for her best friend? TBB Jake Seresin would 200% take care of you in ways you never knew you needed.

@never--doubt Is Charlie Bradbury too obvious? I really feel that you and Charlie could geek out over the same kinds of things and attend all the cons and do all the RP in the world. Ineffable wives, anyone?

@dawn-petrichor-world you chaos demon, you. Happy Lowman. He's one of those gruff with everyone but his old lady types that's also incredibly chaotic. He'd be down for late night snack runs, murder, or just watching Netflix on the couch. All you have to do is bat your eyelashes and he's on his knees.

@antiquitea I know you adore Bucky Barnes BUT. Poe Dameron. He's the best pilot in the resistance, able to hit the target with precision and efficiency...repeatedly. He's great at following orders, but also giving them. And you never have to worry about him being with anyone else. Have you seen the way BB-8 tells on him? Well, maybe there's one other person you have to worry about. But how have you never considered Finn before? Maybe a throuple is in your cards.

@nepenthe-raes-affairs is a soft sub for Wanda Maximoff. You cannot convince me otherwise. Like, no notes.

@fuckyeahhangman Billy Butcher. Once he finally lets go of Rebecca, he's able to see you for what you are - a beautiful warrior, someone who refuses to back down from a challenge, and someone who will call him on his shit. Beard burn has never felt so good.

@princessmisery666 Hands down I ship you with Opie Winston. He's a giant teddy bear that oozes sex. He'll manhandle the fuck out of you in bed and then treat you like a queen outside. Yeah, his relationship with Donna was rocky but they made it work, just like you'd make it work. Lila was just a distraction, as much as I love her.

3. What were your top five books of the year?

I'm bad at favorites in general, and this year I read a lot of books that I very much enjoyed but wouldn’t quite say I loved. But I will say, in different ways and for different reasons: Land of Milk and Honey by C. Pam Zhang, The Book of Goose by Yiyun Li, Heartstopper Volume 5 by Alice Oseman, Dry Land by Ruby Rae Spiegel, and Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation/Mo Dao Zu Shi by Mo Xiang Tong Xu. (I don't know if any particular volume was a favorite book of the year, but the story overall is absolutely one of my favorite things I experienced this year.) Now I'm gonna move on to the next question before I can continue second guessing this answer...

16. What is the most over-hyped book you read this year?

Not sure if it counts as being overhyped, but I didn’t enjoy Greedy by Jen Winston as much as I was led to believe I would by some enthusiastic people on the internet. Probably the most hyped books I've read recently, in general, would be The Hunger Games series, and I had a great time reading them but maybe not quite as good of a time as their popularity would suggest.

17. Did any books surprise you with how good they were?

Grown by Tiffany D. Jackson is not a genre I read much of (YA thriller-y drama), but it kept me absolutely riveted throughout.

25. What reading goals do you have for next year?

There were a few things I started reading this year and then put aside because I wasn’t quite in the right mood for them, including but not limited to The Poppy War by R.F. Kuang, She Who Became the Sun by Shelley Parker-Chan, and Little Foxes Took Up Matches by Katya Kazbek. I’m still very excited about these books and would love to read them next year! I hope to finish the book/series I am currently reading (the Lymond books…). In general I would love to read the many books I already own but have not yet read! Maybe my goal should be to read books at a faster rate than I acquire new ones...

😍 That Was the River, This Is the Sea (what_alchemy) - 44K, Kaysanova, no-powers academia AU, meet ugly, annoyances-to-fuckbuddies-to-lovers - this was really lovely. the emotions were so good & chewy - very real family dynamics with all that grief and anger and love, Joe's journey of not immediately recognizing his own feelings 'cause his so fixated on a specific vision. Spider-Woman

SO! Issa Rae is cast as Spider-Woman in the movie into the Spider-Verse. Not too crazy actually because what they don't tell you in school is, before Jessica Drew was created, the first Spider-Woman was black!

That's right folks, in 1975 before Jessica Drew's introduction in 1977, Valerie the Librarian from the Electric Company (portrayed in live action by Hattie Mae Winston aka the Black Mom on Rugrats) took up the mantle of Spider-Woman to fight crime in Super Spidey Stories!

In the story, Spider-Man mishandles one of his costumes complete with web-shooters while taking a nap and it conveniently lands in the lap of Valerie right as she wants to try becoming a hero.

Using her wits, she repurposes it to duplicate the hero's powers and starts off on her own crusade against crime.

And, considering it's Super Spidey Stories, the appropriate level of angst is none and though Spidey is initially skeptical, she proves an erstwhile partner in the war against crime.

And, two years later, they'd add a white Spider-Woman to the 616 universe.

Endgame: Chapter 1

So I was writing this with a group of my friends, and we kinda let it die. I’ve been working on finishing it, so here’s the first couple sections of it. Let me know if you want me to keep posting it.

I don’t believe those friends are on Tumblr .(Sam or Katie, DM me and I’ll add your usernames on here). This is a Renegades fanfic where Katie wrote Lady Phaser, Sam wrote Wolfsbane, and I wrote Mirage.

Week 1 Day 3

Wolfsbane placed the small plant pots onto the floor where instructed. She straightened and looked at Mirage, who was watching her intently. Mirage was wearing a flowy, lacy white dress, and it was a miracle that it wasn’t dirty in the filthy subway tunnels. Wolfsbane or pretty much anyone didn't know her true identity. Mirage’s face was an illusion of blurriness, making any of her features unable to focus. Mirage silently led her toward the exit of the subway station. The girls were currently walking across abandoned train tracks when they came across a train car that wasn't there the week before. The windows were painted out, but it wouldn't have mattered anyway. There was no light pouring out onto the tracks. The door on the car was different from the other train cars. It had a very secure lock on it, preventing anyone from getting in or out of the car.

“What's this?” Wolfsbane asked, stopping to look at the new car.

“Oh, nothing important to you,” Mirage replied, continuing to walk. Responses were normal like this, Mirage was not the most talkative person.

“Important or not, I want to know what is inside,” Wolfsbane said forcefully. Mirage turned around and glared at her.

“No. Do you want trouble or not? We will see you next week,” Mirage said, even more forcefully. They continued walking. Mirage left Wolfsbane at the entrance to the subway. She then retreated into the darkness. Wolfsbane walked out of the tunnels, glaring at the place where Mirage was. She was walking backward when she walked straight into a light post.

Week 2 Day 11

Wolfsbane was greeted by Mirage as she walked down into the subway tunnels, small pots of plants in her arms. Wolfsbane was wearing a long cloak that was cropped in the front, with a small leaf clasp. The hood of her cloak was just thin enough so she could see out and still hide her eyes, although her nose and mouth were showing. She was wearing a mint green dress with pine green leggings. She wore black gardening gloves and had a messenger bag draped over her shoulder. Inside the bag was a waterproof layer, and she had filled the bag with soil. She had planted what appeared to be mint inside. Its bright, green leaves complemented Wolfsbane’s pale skin, and a small stem of the plant had begun trailing down the side of the bag.

Wolfsbane brushed the leftover dirt from her sleeves and subtly lifted the mint plant’s stem so it wasn’t in danger of hitting anything.

“So, what are you using my plants for anyway?” Wolfsbane asked, her voice echoing through the tunnels.

“Why do you need to know?” Mirage responded. Wolfsbane sighed.

“I suppose not knowing won’t kill me,” Wolfsbane followed Mirage again but stopped at the same but slightly less new train car. “What’s this?” she asked again. Again, Mirage glared at her.

“It's a prison car,” said Mirage, Wolfsbane couldn't tell if Mirage was being sarcastic or not.

“Really?” asked Wolfsbane. Mirage sighed, irritated.

“Yes,” said Mirage.

“Who is in there?” asked Wolfsbane, peering at the window. Trying to see if she could make out any movement. Mirage scoffed.

“Someone.”

“Can I see them?” asked Wolfsbane. Mirage sighed, pondering it,

“Fine, but if you tell anyone about her, I will kill you myself,” Mirage said. “Wait here I have to go get the gloves from Honey.”

“Gloves?” Wolfsbane asked, but she was utterly ignored as Mirage walked away. Mirage came back a few minutes later with a pair of fingerless gloves.

“Follow me,” she said, and Wolfsbane did as instructed as Mirage opened the lock with some difficulty and stepped into the dark prison car. Wolfsbane followed, giving herself a few seconds to adjust to the dim light. There was a petite girl who appeared to be curled into a ball on the floor. She had pale skin with matted dark brown hair. She was wearing a white shirt streaked with dirt, a black skirt with expanders over her shoulders. One of her legs was cuffed to a pole in the car. Her bare feet must have been cold in the damp, underground air. The girl looked up when she heard Mirage and Wolfsbane enter. Her small size seemed even smaller in the expansive train car. Her eyes were a startling grey, like a cloudy afternoon, turning stormy.

“I brought a visitor,” said Mirage. The girl’s eyes flicked to look at Wolfsbane then they focused back on Mirage. Mirage tossed the gloves to the girl and the girl caught them. Putting them on her slender hands. She then started to move her hands, signaling in sign language. The gloves were sophisticated technology that sensed the girl’s hand signs and movements, which then translated them into audio.

“Hello, what's your name? And why did they bring you here? Are you an Anarchist?” asked the girl, the gloves were a robotic voice: female British, giving the girl little personality. Mirage glared at the girl, watching the girl’s every movement. Wolfsbane was just confused.

“Uh... my name’s Wolfsbane and Mirage brought me here because I was curious. And no, I’m not an anarchist,” said Wolfsbane, the girl frowned.

“Why?” asked the girl. “Why aren't you an anarchist?”

“I prefer to work alone,” Wolfsbane responded. The girl glanced at Mirage, then back at Wolfsbane.

“I suppose you have a question to ask?” asked the girl. “I can try to answer, Mirage just might not let me.” signed the girl cryptically.

“Why is she here?” Wolfsbane directed the question at Mirage instead.

“That’s none of your business,” Mirage replied. The girl frowned,

“Then what is her business?” asked the robotic voice coming from the gloves.

“That’s none of your business,” Wolfsbane said, slightly mockingly. The girl huffed annoyed,

“Fine, then can you please tell me something interesting?” asked the girl. Mirage huffed, leaning back against the wall, Wolfsbane stood near the door. Unsure if this girl was dangerous or not.

“About what?” Wolfsbane asked.

“Anything! It's not like I've been in touch with the normal world,” signed the girl. It was hard to tell if the girl was exasperated or not. Her tone of voice never really changed it. Was the same flat melodic. No highs and lows.

“I mean, what category? I don’t want to bore you.” Wolfsbane said.

“No offense to you, but anything you say won’t bore me. I have nothing else to do.”

“Did you know that vanilla comes from orchids?” Wolfsbane blurted. Mirage sighed, and the girl looked intrigued.

“No, I didn't know that. So how do orchids become vanilla?” asked the girl.

“I’m pretty sure the vanilla is the seed pods of the plant, although I still need to research orchids more. I just can’t get them to stay alive,” Wolfsbane complained.

“Alright, that’s enough,” Mirage said. “Time to go.” The girl huffed taking off the gloves and handing them to Mirage. They then left the car.

“Is she dangerous?” Wolfsbane asked as she stepped out of the car, Mirage closing the door behind them. Locking the door with struggle. She then answered Wolfsbane’s question.

“Not anymore, but if she escaped, she would be,” Mirage replied.

"Why not anymore?” asked Wolfsbane, a little impulsively.

“You don't need to know that,” Mirage said.

“Fine, I can argue with you about this later. For now, I need to tend to my garden.” Wolfsbane said before showing herself to the exit.
