The Magic of Fireflies, Captured by Radim Schreiber
Fireflies, also called lightning bugs, are one of nature’s delightful night artists, lighting up the sky at twilight, and showing us the magic of their light production. Photographer Radim Schreiber is a master at capturing the fireflies that inhabit the forest of the American south, like Tennessee and North Carolina.  His patience at capturing long exposure shots create a lit-up blanket of…

It takes a tremendous patience to capture photos of a firefly, in almost complete darkness, while it flashes. Radim Schreiber has got a stunning collection of photos. I love his photos of fireflies.

About Firefly Experience Hello, my name is Radim Schreiber. I was born in the Czech Republic, but presently I live in the USA. I been photographing insects since year 1999. Photographing fireflies is my latest project. If you would like to see my other projects and photos, please visit: RadimPhoto.com When I first moved to Iowa, I was mesmerized by the abundance and brightness of fireflies during summer nights. During my childhood in the Czech Republic, I had never seen anything like that. I fell in love with fireflies, and the idea for this project was born. It was in 2003, and I was on the plane when I felt inspired. So, I made a sketch on a paper; it was a glowing firefly on a silhouetted blade of grass, with the moon in the background and the dark blue sky. Since then I had this image in my head, waiting for the right time to materialize. I wasn't able to photograph fireflies until there were advancements of low light capabilities of the latest camera equipment to photograph fireflies. Since 2008, each summer I would photograph and video record fireflies. I have received several awards and also been published in numerous publications for my firefly photos. I have exhibited Firefly photos in the USA, London, Rio DeJaneiro, Hungary and Czech Republic. The pinnacle of the firefly debut experience was my night show at Teeple Hansen Gallery in Fairfield, Iowa. I created whole environment with firefly photos, dim lights and night sounds. I still remember the light and happiness on the people's faces.

Did you know fireflies glow synchronously? Their glow and dim rhythms sync up spontaneously, much like the individual cells in our heart synchronise to make our hearts beat, or neurons in a brains signal together to produce thoughts. This spontaneous self-organising behaviour still remains largely mysterious, but scientist are now exploring this phenomenon with oscillating nanomechanical devices. 📷 : Radim Schreiber/California Institute of Technology https://ift.tt/2TSfyKT

Firefly Experience - Summer Night with Fireflies (Lightning Bugs)
youtube
Radim Schreiber
NOTE! For optimal viewing, watch this video at night, with all the lights turned off, full screen with sound turned on.
In this short movie, I tried to capture my feelings and experiences with fireflies in the woods near my house in Fairfield, Iowa. I wanted to document not only their beauty and magical glow, but also behavior in their natural environment.
I have chosen not to do any digital manipulation to the video itself, so the footage came straight from the camera. This is real-time footage of fireflies!
Sit back, relax and enjoy the summer magic.

Nature and Connections
When I first started this course I knew very little to nothing about nature interpretation, and how much nature has been involved in my life. Throughout this course, I learned to appreciate what it means to be an effective and well-like nature interpreter. I also opened my mind to what the word nature really means to me and what experiences are formed with the natural world in our lives. For example, in the being I thought to have a good interpretation of nature was to have these amazing experiences with the magnificent natural areas including rain forests, mountains, etc. However, as I grew as an interpreter, I realize that you don’t need to have these unreal explorations and experiences with nature to be a good nature interpreter. The important thing that I learned was that it is about the meanings behind the nature that you are connecting to, and how you present that connection to your audience. That being said, what I think is the most amazing thing I know about nature are my experiences with the local nature areas close to my house.
Throughout my childhood, I was very active and went to the park all of the time. My park isn’t the most ordinary park because there is a moraine behind it that no one can touch. When I was a child I would always love walking with my parents on the trails, viewing the beautiful natural scenery. This scenery included a lot of trees, ponds, fireflies, and many more beautiful species of wildlife and plant species. As I would look out beyond the trail into the distance all I could see was different shades of green, in a variety of sizes and shapes. Below is a video of fireflies in the night.

Firefly Experience - Summer Night with Fireflies (Lightning Bugs)
What mattered most to me, was less on the actual nature itself, but was the time I spent with my family enjoying what beauty was around us. Looking back, I did pay attention to the connection I was making with my family while we experienced this little adventure in the moraine. Maybe then I didn’t realize it very much, but now I definitely do and it has a special place in my heart and forever will. Even though I talk about this experience in the past, I still do these walks with my parents in the present day. I am especially grateful that I have this amazing piece of the natural world right near my house so I can walk through it with my family during the pandemic. It really wasn’t until the pandemic that I realized how appreciative I was to have a connection with this moraine and develop a connection with it.

Picture I took of my family and I.
Overall, when someone asks me what’s the most amazing thing about nature it is about the connections you make with it. These connections will always be a part of you even if you never see that part of the natural world again.
Question!
Is there a special nature place that you are connected to? Explain.

Don’t stop this child, he’s the father of man Don’t cross his way, he’s part of the plan I am that child, but so are you You’ve just forgotten, just lost the clue Inside your heart sits a Seer Between his thoughts, he can hear A melody simple but wondrously clear The music of life, so precious, so dear This spark of creation, this exquisite glow You would come and dance with me Kindle this fire so we could see All the children of the Earth Weave their magic and give new birth To a world of freedom with no pain A world of joy, much more sane Deep inside, you know it’s true Just find that child, it’s hiding in you." M.J. . . . . Thanks to Radim Schreiber
