Frank Lloyd Wright's Johnson Wax Headquarters.
The Johnson Wax Headquarters – also known as the Johnson Wax Administration Building – was completed between 1936 and 1939 in Racine, Wisconsin. It provided the main office for SC Johnson & Son, an American manufacturer of household cleaning supplies.
Despite its location on an industrial park, Wright designed the building in his organic architecture style with references to natural forms. This is exemplified in the main open-plan office space, which is often described as forest-like.

Publishers’ Binding Thursday
For this holiday season Publishers’ Binding Thursday post, this is Christmas Stories by Charles Dickens, published by Whitman Publishing Company of Racine, WI in 1940. The book features a weirdly unseasonal publishers’ binding featuring pink and white illustrations on a cream/yellowish book cloth. Unfortunately our copy is missing the front of its dust jacket, but at least the binding remains largely undamaged.
Included in the book are three stories by Charles Dickens: “A Christmas Carol,” “The Chimes,” and “The Cricket on the Hearth.” Only “A Christmas Carol” is illustrated. The endpapers are truly the star of this book, though, and feature a lovely illustration of the town getting ready for Christmas. The illustrations are by Milwaukee artist and cartoonist Erwin Louis Hess (1906-1999) who had just started working as a comic book artist for Dell Publicaotions at this time.
We hope all your Christmas preparations are going smoothly and that all will have a happy holiday!

Mound Cemetery // November 17, 2023 (Racine, WI)
Mound Cemetery is one of the oldest cemeteries in Racine, and is so named because of the effigy and burial mounds that existed in the location long before white settlers were buried there. We took the kids there on a field trip last week, after teaching them about the tribes whose lands we live on, and about Native American burial mounds in general. We of course visited all the still-extant mounds there (one of which is pictured in the fourth photo from the top), but I also took photographs of some of the most interesting graves. I was particularly fond of the one pictured in the third photo; where, over time, the tree has grown so its branches rest on top of the stone. And I had to take a picture of the grave in the bottom-most photograph: Captain William Bones is buried there! Like Bill Bones, aka The Captain, from Treasure Island!
