Plant of the Day
Sunday 17 September 2023
The short-lived perennial Verbena bonariensis (purpletop vervain, clustertop vervain, Argentinian vervain) is a great plant for a late summer and early autumn display. In this sunny front garden it was thriving on a well drained soil and contrasted with the dark purple foliage of Sambucus nigra 'Black Lace' (elder). Mature plants can succumb to the winter but self-sown seedlings often survive.

Even as the fields heat up, the blanket flowers have been going strong. Purpletop vervain and fleabane are among the flowers that thrive this time of year as well

Fiery skipper (Hylephila phyleus) sipping nectar from a Purpletop Vervain! (Verbena bonariensis). Or, at least that's what iNatraulist tells me! I dont know anything about flowers.

I thought this was "Swamp Milkweed", but my neighbor Katherine corrected me. It's actually called Purpletop Vervain or Verbena bonariensis! (It was in her garden!}

Today's Walking Photo: Comic relief…my photo session with this very cooperative bumblebee was cut short when I heard a faint voice coming from behind me (I wear earbuds and listen to podcasts while I’m walking). I turned to see a woman behind the wheel of her car, which she had stopped in the middle of the road. As soon as she saw I’d turned to face her, she started urgently announcing something that sounded like gibberish to me:
“Abeena bona rinses!”
Thinking she was lost and trying to find someone’s home, or that she was maybe just a lunatic, I took out my earbuds and said, “I’m sorry?”
Now I could hear more clearly of course, and she said, “That plant you’re taking pictures of! It’s called Verbena bonariensis!”
I looked from her to the plant and said, “Ah. Okay!”
She said, “You knew that. You didn’t know that?”
I replied, “I didn’t know that!”
“Okay, good! It’s good for butterflies!”
“And photogenic bumblebees!” I said under my breath to her suddenly departing vehicle.
The bumblebee in question? Gone now of course. So we must settle for this imperfect shot.
But at least we know what the plant is called. Which, admittedly, I usually do not.
