still thinking about the maria teresa author* who, when highlighting the physical differences between philip iv and his castilian subjects in passing, out of the blue, could think of nothing less strange than bringing up how "small and with rather developed body hairiness" the spaniards are. i think it was a french attempt at humor (haha! the spanish!) but it's just a very [?] thing to bring up specifically, given that the question of body hair was basically irrelevant with 17th century men's clothing.
it's a small thing but it stood out to me by its sheer randomness and the fact that someone thought it was either a relevant comment or a funny enough sentence to print. also my guy...... we are literally side by side. we are two mid sized to small countries glued together in a little peninsula-continent and we've had centuries upon centuries of exchanges. ive lived in both countries ive visited north and south and there is no big overarching "racial" difference between us............ i think there are obvious on-average differences in the extremes (pas de calais vs andalucia fight) but the way you see what's commonly attributed to the spanish you'd think we were different species. if you want to call us unattractive or more animalistic (not that i think the aforementioned traits are bad at all— but that's what the tone implies) you're gonna end up throwing a lot of stones at your fellow countrymen

#my posts#with all due respect to my french friends whom i love very much#this is honestly why i started not disclosing the fact that I'm spanish to acquaintances#that way they just take me for one of them and so#i get to avoid all the random microaggressions and 'spanish things' they would find 'obvious' in me#if i had told them i wasn't french#one time i got told out of nowhere 'wow you have so little arm hair for a spaniard' as several school acquaintances scrutinized me and#it's the weirder and somehow (to me) more uncomfortable version of the 'you're so pale for a spaniard' which was also recurring#i don't want to imply all french people are like this or anything. love you guys#but it's amazing that so many of them see nothing annoying or déplacé about pseudoracial remarks#these psychonational euro relationships have to be studied like a bug#do you ever hear another european's passing comment about your country/region#and just know which entrenched stereotypes they're basing off their completely inaccurate image of it like a tip of the iceberg kinda thing#but it's not like you can 'haha well actually' over every single small comment or you'd look insane#if this post seems overly combative i apologize and i just want to say studying in france is the source of this hate#this post is not leaving the bubble but just in case i will state: this is not a post about actual racism. this is an ethnical euro on euro#violence discussion space

Now, let's stop for a sec and ask -- why would Chalmers take a view that commits him to this weird a view of consciousness? Basically, this kind of unfalsifiability is not accidental on Chalmers' part. Like it would feel extremely natural to say that qualia could interact with the physical world and let that be that. But Chalmers really does not want to commit to a view that says "there's either magic or new physics happening inside the brain. Once brain scans get better we can test it and find out, and I trust that the brain scans will prove me right". He very clearly does not think we'll find anything like that, and so he's constructed his argument against reductive materialism so that it can never be empirically falsified. The fact that you can't test it empirically is a carefully designed feature of this framing, not a bug or an incidental detail. That's what he's talking about when he calls his position a "benign form of dualism" -- it doesn't commit you to contradicting physics, because it can never produce testable predictions. It's the whole reason you would choose this framing over something like Des Cartes'.

this is not why Chalmers elects for non-interactionist views. rather, he believes that a causally efficacious theory of consciousness would just kick the can down the road, because he can always imagine a version of consciousness that only has the causal properties of consciousness, and not the phenomenal properties. i think The Conscious Mind is pretty clear about this, but may not be framing it in exactly the right way. i can find the quotes i am thinking of that make this clear later.
edit: actually Chalmers does say he doesn't want to bet against the physically closed universe, so you were right, but i was right as he says the main problem is that interactionism doesn't solve anything:
In any case, all versions of interactionist dualism have a conceptual problem that suggests that they are less successful in avoiding epiphenomenalism than they might seem; or at least that they are no better off than the view I have advocated. Even on these views, there is a sense in which the phenomenal is irrelevant. We can always subtract the phenomenal component from any explanatory account, yielding a purely causal component. Imagine (with Eccles) that "psychons" in the nonphysical mind push around physical processes in the brain, and that psychons are the seat of experience. We can tell a story about the causal relations between psychons and physical pro- cesses, and a story about the causal dynamics among psychons, without ever invoking the fact that psychons have phenomenal properties. Just as with physical processes, we can imagine subtracting the phenomenal properties of psychons, yielding a situation in which the causal dynamics are isomorphic. It follows that the fact that psychons are the seat of experience plays no essential role in a causal explanation, and that even in this picture experience is explanatorily irrelevant.

Child probably feels that they're close friends and is very open to rogue, and damn, they're very open. Even with their problems, Says stuff like,

Well that was a day. Finished cycling through all the stations on my list, then started back through all my bases, flying to each planet in their respective systems in turn before restarting the Starbirth mission. Made it onto a third page of bases (and waaaaaaaay too many hours of reloads) before I finally found a living ship I liked enough to keep. Though there were a bunch of maybes that I grabbed for long enough to take to the Nexus and double-check their colouring under consistent lighting before deciding nah and hitting reload on the manual save.
This is her under several different lighting conditions. I love how blue her underside looks in the nexus, and that her head turns a deep garnet red in my freighter. Also took her to my first planet in Eissentam, where my other living ship looks spectacular at night, and was amused by how yellow-green she looked during the day there, and then went blue-headed at night. In space stations some of her green turns a golden yellow, and the head varies between garnet and cream (sometimes even particoloured of those).
Undecided on a name for her yet, though I might just drop the random word on her generated one and call her the Starlit. And I am now officially out of psychonic eggs (and banked living ship augments) until my frigates come back from an expedition with more. Wish they did as well on finding the storage add-ons as the eggs; Audrey III needs 2-3 more of those before I start slinging them at this new ship.
