Old is Mould: Our society’s obsession with youth

If movies, social media and TV shows are to be believed, ‘old age’ begins at the ripe age of 30 and the only interests older people have include obsessing over the young ones, whether it’s their own children or their neighbours’ children. In a youth obsessed culture, older people are either reduced to stereotypes or are completely erased from popular imagination.

Most stories feature protagonists in their twenties, navigating the challenges of life, with major ones being posed by the older people they know As mummies, papas, dadis, chachas and chachis, older people are the supporting characters in a young person's life, sometimes villains, but never the heroes of any story.

On social media, older people, especially women are targeted for ‘age inappropriate behaviour’, like Malaika Arora Khan. Khan routinely receives vitriolic comments on her Instagram, sometimes for her risque outfits and sometimes for dating a younger man, Arjun Kapoor. Desi Girl Priyanka Chopra has also been targeted for her marriage to Nick Jonas who is 10 years her junior.

The comments are colourful. They say that Khan, a mother, should not ‘dress like a teenage girl’, that this ‘buddhi’ and Kapoor look like ‘mother and son together.’ There are common themes that underpin these comments: older people must act their age and how one dresses and behaves should ‘match’ their chronological age.

It is common for actors to portray much older characters as if there is a death of older actors in the industry. Sometimes the parents are as old as or just a few years older than their on screen “children”. TV is no stranger to this phenomenon. Shweta Tiwari, who played the iconic character, Prerna, from Kasauti Zindagi Ki is only an year older than Karanvir Bohra, her on screen son, Prem. Kumkum Bhagya’s Sriti Jha and Shabbir Ahluwalia play parents to girls in their 20s. It is bizarre to see thirty-something actors play parents to 20-somethings. One finds it difficult to differentiate between the parents and the children.

The silver screen is notorious for its ageism. Saand Ki Aankh, a film about 60-year-old sharpshooters Prakashi and Chandro Tomar was questioned by netizens for casting the much younger Taapsee Pannu and Bhumi Pednekar as the leading ladies. In a country like India where elderly people are revered, it is difficult to understand why nobody wants to see or hear their stories.

Neena Gupta, whose performances in hits like Badhaii Ho and Shubh Mangal Zyaada Savdhan were acclaimed, quipped on Twitter, “Hamari umar ke role toh kamse kam humse kara lo bhai.” Older actors rarely come across roles that don't involve them playing parents or grandparents. These characters often want nothing for themselves but everything for their children. Prototypes of well-meaning Indian elders, their happiness lies in their child's happiness. While books offer a more diverse set of characters, stories of older people are not often on the bestsellers’ list on Amazon.

The belief that a woman is ‘past her prime’ after 30 is illustrated by the fact that Rakhee Gulzar went from playing Amitabh Bachchan's mashooqa to playing his maa in the 1982 film Shakti. This journey from mashooqa to maa is one many actresses tread. Reema Lagoo, who became the most well-known face of Indian motherhood in 90s Bollywood, first played a mother to adult children at the age of 30!

The representation of older men is not that much more nuanced. Older male actors routinely play characters 20 years younger, like Aamir Khan in 3 Idiots. They rarely play their age and the actresses cast to play their love interests are usually 20 years younger.

The obsession with hiding wrinkles, grey hair and the visceral disgust youngsters have towards being called uncle or aunty illustrate that youth is aspirational and ageing much-reviled. Even the gods (with the exception of Brahma) are ever youthful with no fine lines on their divine faces, permanently 25. All of society wants to drink from the mythical fountain of eternal youth. ‘Cause once you’re old, you’re mould.

In Apple TV+’s Little America, Immigrants — Indian, Mexican, Iranian — Take Centre Stage

In the opening frames of Little America — the new Apple TV+ anthology series, out next Friday — Asha Bhosle's eighties disco hit “Udi Baba” plays over the opening credits. The song has nothing to do with what we're about to see, but it sets the stage for the first episode. Titled “The Manager”, written by Rajiv Joseph (Draft Day) and directed by Deepa Mehta (Elements trilogy), it follows a first-generation Indian immigrant named Kabir Jha — played by Suraj Sharma (Life of Pi) as an adult — whose life is torn apart after his parents are deported back to India in the early 2000s. Bhosle's instantly-recognisable voice is one of several Indian — and Pakistani — links in the Little America premiere, alongside Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan's “My Heart, My Life”, Arif Lohar & Meesha Shafi's Coke Studio hit “Alif Allah Chambey Di Booty”, and an anachronistic appearance for “Kajra Re” from Bunty Aur Babli. Kabir's mother Seema Jha (Priyanka Bose) watches Indian soap operas, and the father Krishan Jha (Ravi Kapoor) namechecks Sachin Tendulkar when the family plays cricket. They are all things only those from a South Asian origin will understand. And in a way, that's what Little America is about. Inspired by the true stories featured in Epic Magazine, the Apple TV+ series celebrates immigrants. Their culture, their values, their hopes, their fears, their dreams, their perseverance, their way of life, their search for an identity. Little America is diverse behind the scenes too, with immigrant writers and directors from the very regions handling the stories at times, and aided by a creative team that has the Pakistan-born Kumail Nanjiani (The Big Sick), and Alan Yang (Master of None) of Taiwanese origin. The eight half-hour episodes in total — all of them will be available on the same day, unlike with Apple TV+ previously — are centred on migrants from all over the world. That includes France, Iran, Mexico, Nigeria, Singapore, Syria, and Uganda, in addition to the already mentioned India. While most episodes are set exclusively in the US, a few spend some time in the countries of origin, be it through flashbacks or cross-cutting. And there's even a concept episode, one that's largely silent, starring Mélanie Laurent (Inglourious Basterds) and featuring Zachary Quinto (Star Trek). Spoilers ahead for Little America. In fact, some of these other Little America episodes do a much better job than the Indian immigrant one. “The Manager” finds Kabir pushing himself to win the National Spelling Bee — clichéd but a true story — so he can appeal his parents' case in person with Laura Bush, wife of former US President George W. Bush. Only to find out that there's little Ms. Bush has to offer. Kabir ends up growing up without his parents around, while also having to look after the family motel as his uncle guardian lazes off. Though the episode touches upon Kabir's isolation, it also leaves a lot out of his story. The more powerful episodes, the best of the lot in season 1, are the ones involving a Mexican undocumented teenager called Marisol Rosado (Jearnest Corchado), and a Singaporean single mother named Ai Wang (Angela Lin). Titled “The Jaguar”, written by Dan LeFranc (The Affair) and directed by Aurora Guerrero (Mosquita y Mari), the former charts Marisol's journey to becoming a national level squash player. In the latter, titled “The Grand Prize Expo Winners” and written & directed by Tze Chun (Gotham), Ai breaks her back to build a life for her two kids.

In doing so, she also rediscovers the love of her family. Meanwhile in “The Grand Prize Expo Winners”, Ai struggles with her fear of abandonment, which she eventually overcomes on a cruise. The episode is one of a select few that has nice tiny touches, as when a bored Ai, left behind by her kids and with nothing to do, cleans her cruise ship room. Little America doesn't always hit these heights though, but even at its quietest, it delivers an important and resonant message. Joshuah Bearman, executive producer and Epic Magazine founder, acknowledged that when he said: “Immigration has become a political issue, but not if you just tell people's ordinary stories. We wanted to make this show so that audiences could just get to know other people.” Despite Bearman's assertions, a series that brings immigrants centre stage, at a time when they are being vilified by leaders globally, makes a statement in itself. We all as common people have some aspirations to become a Celebrity in any field or if not Meet a celebrity which we love a lot and are die hard fans. If we happen to see some celebrity at any place we tend to get excited and want a autograph or nowadays Selfie or both. These tendencies are quite natural in Indians. Well that is not wrong. But what is wrong is nowadays lot of people who are considering themselves to be Fans are in real “Perverts Of Nature”.I have recently noticed many posts regarding actresses being Body shamed and taunted and not only actresses there has been an attack on Female Sports Celebrity too. Yes Our Pride Mithali Raj Captain of Indian Women’s Cricket Team was shamed when she posted a picture on twitter were there was a spot of sweat near her armpit. Her Reply was epic but the Post regarding her being shamed was not good and it was followed by another attack where someone tried to advise her on what to wear.

Now Lets first come to some Unpleasant Incidents which happened

1.Tapsee Pannu Incident

The Bold yet the charming Actress Tapsee Pannu was shooting for Judwaa 2 when during the shoot she posted her picture which went viral and some dude took it on himself and went on to advise her not to do this.

Poor fate as it is she has only one hit to her name,earlier was trolled for being heavy and now body shamed.She proved her acting mettle in Neerja but she could not escape the cheap society comments.

If they are unable to give you attention then please understand that they are compelled not that they do it because they have attitude. If you want to approach them desperately then the most common way is through contacts,little difficult but still better than pouncing on them right??..

Now lets come to Social Media, Nowadays celebrities are on social media also and share their private pictures,happenings and everything with millions of viewers which is risky.So whenever you get through a celebrity picture which is not appropriate or odd please Stop moral policing or shaming them specially FEMALE CELEBRITIES. Whatever they are wearing or eating is really not your business.How much they spend or how much money they have to spend or what ways they earn money is really not your business and is really not cool.

If a question raises in your Mind that Why do they wear such things to be trolled or if they wear something like this they will suffer.. My answer in ready is that tomorrow if you wear something or your loved ones wear something which does not go well in society and they will be grilled for this then you may feel bad.Then just imagine how these celebrities may feel when they are shamed like this. You will not like the idea of being called to police station or face some legal trouble.

These celebrities are common people like us and have gone through and grown through most difficult times of their lives.Their Journey is also like ours Filled with struggles and hardships but they are there because they faced them and grew.If you want to imitate, then imitate their hardwork,passion,dedication towards achieving their goals rather than imitating their looks. In No way I am trying to flatter them or will get to meet a celebrity by this blogpost. All I want those people to realize is that Having Freedom of speech does not entitle you to speak against someone in a disrespectful manner.if you do not like some celebrity better leave them alone and walk away, not watch them.
