“I thought it was really cool that the grandchildren of King Harald V of Norway were interviewing their grandparents' 80th birthday guests. One of the funniest questions was asked by Princess Maud of Denmark to Prince Frederick of Denmark, asking him if he preferred Norwegian salmon or Danish red sausage. The cutest comment made by Princess Leah of Norway, praising Princess Beatrix of the Netherlands, calling her splendid.” - Submitted by Anonymous

Hi, im new to royalty so forgive me if its a stupid question thats been answered a million times. If i understand it correctly there is a naming tradition in Denmark with the regnal names of kings alternating between ‘Christian’ and ‘Frederik’, QMII took the place of a Christian, named her son Frederik etc. What if prince Christians first child is a girl? Its relatively new that women can inherit the throne over their younger brother so I understand theres no precedence for it. What do you think? What would happen if you get a Dutch lineage with like a million (4) queen regnants in a row, would they all be called Margrethe?
Hello :) I've had some stupid questions in my time and it's certainly not stupid haha. If people aren't aware, from 1513 until Queen Margrethe came to the throne Denmark had an unbroken pattern of alternating names: King Christian, then King Frederik, then King Christian, then King Frederik and so on. Margrethe is treated as an Honorary Christian for the sake of the pattern. There are a few things:
It wouldn't actually be uncommon to have multiple royals or multiple monarchs in a row with the same name. They find ways to differentiate. They have numerals - Queen Margrethe II, King Harald V etc. They can use nicknames or middle names - Harry's birth name was Henry, Catharina-Amalia is referred to as Amalia. They'd find a way if they wanted to.
The Christian and Frederik tradition going on so long without interruption is not that straight forward. Margrethe's father was a King Frederik but his birth name was Christian. Frederik VIII was also born Christian. So they could call a princess anything but she could still use Margrethe as Queen. Secondly, Christian IX was born Christian but was never expected to be King of Denmark, he was chosen when the previous line died out, so if he'd had a different name or they'd chosen someone else the tradition could have died in 1863. Christian VIII was also born Christian but he inherited the throne from his cousin who had no kids so if he'd had a different name it could have died in 1839. And Christian IV's original heir was also called Christian but he died childless at age 44, without taking the throne, which meant his brother Frederik became King and was able to continue the pattern. So, again, it's actually very possible the tradition was going to end as early as 1648. The pattern is old but it's not guaranteed, it never has been. It only continued this long through monarchs actively choosing that regnal name and a healthy dose of luck!
And lastly, and perhaps most importantly, calling female heirs Margrethe isn't really a tradition anyway. Denmark's only had two Queens and they were both called Margrethe. But our Margrethe was named after her British grandmother Margaret of Connaught who was Crown Princess of Sweden, not Margrethe I. And when she was born she had no rights to the throne and her parents had every reason to believe a son would follow. She was 7 when they accepted a son wasn't likely. So it really is a coincidence that the second woman to reign as monarch had the same name as the first, it couldn't have been an attempt to start a tradition as they had no reason to think she would be Queen. Continuing tradition is always voluntary but I can see why they would stick to something that's been ongoing for 500 years. But if Christian had a daughter first, there's no automatic expectation he'd call her Margrethe.

The Danish Royal Family
King Christian IX of Denmark (1818 - 1906) and Queen Louise of Denmark (1817 - 1898) nee Louise of Hesse-Kessel and their children
This Wednesday, a little love for the Danish Royal Family, who gave us Queen Alexandra of England, one of the most beautiful queens to sit on a throne since photography was created (no makeup, Botox, fillers, plastic surgery), and her sister, Empress Maria Feodorovna (Princess Dagmar of Denmark) one of the prettiest and most beloved Empresses of all the Russias.
So where did all that beauty come from? Most of us have seen photographs of Christian IX and Queen Louise in their older years. At least I had not seen them young. I looked for some photos, and I am including them here. Both of them were good-looking. Louise had a pretty face and beautiful eyes. And so did Christian! He was not bad-looking at all, tall and slim. The little cleft on Alexandra's chin apparently came from her father. The girls had good genes.
The House of Glücksburg, to which Christian IX and Queen Louise belonged, is a collateral branch of the German House of Oldenburg. Its members have reigned at various times in Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Iceland, Greece, and several northern German states.
King Christian IX and Queen Louise were double cousins. King Christian was called the "father-in-law of Europe" on account of the marriage of his children to foreign princes and princesses.
Current monarchs King Charles III of the United Kingdom, Queen Margrethe II of Denmark, and King Harald V of Norway, as well as former queens consort Ann Marie of Greece and Sofia of Spain, are patrilineal members of cadet branches of the House of Glücksburg. (gcl)

Happy 46th birthday to Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden, Duchess of Västergötland!
Born on 14 July 1977, Victoria Ingrid Alice Désirée is the heir apparent to the Swedish throne, as the eldest child of King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden. If she ascends to the throne, she would be Sweden's fourth queen regnant (after Margaret, Christina and Ulrika Eleonora) and the first since 1720. Her inheritance is secured by Sweden's 1979 Act of Succession, the first law in Western Europe to adopt royal absolute primogeniture.
She was baptised at the Royal Palace Church on 27 September 1977. Her godparents included Crown Prince Harald of Norway (later king of Norway), and Princess Beatrix of the Netherlands (later queen of the Netherlands, 1980–2013).
Victoria was made crown princess on 1 January 1980 by the 1979 amendment to the Act of Succession of 1810 (Successionsordningen). This constitutional amendment introduced absolute primogeniture, meaning that the throne would be inherited by the monarch's eldest child regardless of gender. Prior to this constitutional change, the heir apparent to the throne was her younger brother, Carl Philip. He is now fourth in line to the throne, behind Victoria and her children.
On 24 February 2009, it was confirmed that permission had been granted and that Victoria would marry Daniel Westling in the summer of 2010. The wedding date was set in Stockholm Cathedral for 19 June 2010, the 34th anniversary of her parents' marriage. The couple have two children: Princess Estelle Silvia Ewa Mary, Duchess of Östergötland (11) and Prince Oscar Carl Olof, Duke of Skåne (7)
Often referred to as the "Godmother of Europe", Crown Princess Victoria is the godmother of eighteen children including: Prince Constantine Alexios of Greece and Denmark; Catharina-Amalia, Princess of Orange; Princess Ingrid Alexandra of Norway; Prince Christian of Denmark; Princess Eléonore of Belgium; Princess Katharina of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha; Princess Leonore, Duchess of Gotland; and Prince Alexander, Duke of Södermanland.
Victoria has dyslexia, as do her father King Carl XVI Gustaf and her brother Prince Carl Philip, and prosopagnosia.

Princess Ingrid Alexandra’s 18th Birthday Gifts
The Norwegian royal court has released the annual public gift list and the gifts received by Princess Ingrid Alexandra for her 18th birthday are included. They released a list and some photos this summer but this one is a little more detailed. Someone sent it to me and I realized that I never made a post about the jewelry she received like I did for her confirmation a couple of years ago so here it is.
King Harald & Queen Sonja
Diamond Ring - The ring was formerly a gift to Queen Sonja from her parents, Karl August and Dagny Haraldsen, in 1954.
Tumblr media
Diamond Bracelet - This was originally owned by Crown Princess Märtha and then by Princess Ragnhild. The bracelet along with the earrings and necklace below are items that were returned to the mainline after Princess Ragnhild passed away in 2012 and are now being given to Princess Ingrid Alexandra.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Earrings - They belonged to Crown Princess Märtha and then to Princess Ragnhild. I’m not sure which earrings these are because they didn’t release a picture.
Necklace - This is the most exciting item to me and the person who sent me the list since it had a bunch of emojis next to it. A picture was not released so we don’t know which necklace it is just that it belonged to Queen Maud and then to Princess Ragnhild. Princess Ragnhild had several that I don’t know the provenance of like this emerald necklace and Queen Maud had several that are lost in the wind like the Pearl Necklace Tiara and the ruby necklace from Queen Victoria. If I had to guess I would say that it’s not any of those and probably a diamond rivière necklace. There are multiple ones in the family that belonged to Queen Maud and at least one that went to Princess Ragnhild but they are really impossible to tell apart so keep an eye out for Princess Ingrid Alexandra wearing one.
King Willem Alexander & Queen Maxima of the Netherlands - January Birthstone Multi Ring Garnet by Anna+Nina
Tumblr media
Crown Prince Frederik & Crown Princess Mary of Denmark - Esme Galaxy Earrings by Dulong Fine Jewelry
Tumblr media
Princess Elisabeth of Belgium, Duchess of Brabant - Ruby, Pearl, & Blue Topaz Moon Earrings by Percossi Papi
Tumblr media
Sámi Parliament - Fápmu Earrings, Ring, and Necklace and Árbevierru Hair Clip by Erica Huuva
Tumblr media
Sámi Parliament's Youth Policy Committee - Komsekule (a traditional Sámi design meant to offer protection) Earrings and Necklace by Juhls Silver Gallery
Tumblr media
Norwegian Children and Youth Council - Coco Pearl Necklace by Biehl
Tumblr media
The Crown Prince Couple’s Foundation - daisy bracelet by Georg Jensen (They didn’t release a picture of this one and Georg Jensen makes several different daisy bracelets but I assume it’s one of the classic gold with white enamel styles like these.)
Tumblr media
Princess Ingeborg’s Pearl Circle Tiara was not included in the annual gift list which is only for public and official gifts not private ones but we know that it was given to her for her 18th birthday by Haakon, Ingeborg, and Ragnhild Lorentzen at the request of their mother, Princess Ragnhild.
