My Top 5 Gay Barbie ships
As an avid Barbie fan and a lesbian, I feel like it was only a matter of time until I made this. I think we can all agree that the Barbie movies blessed us with some of the best lesbian relationships gal pals of our childhoods, and I guess this is just my way of paying homage to my favorites. A little disclaimer, this is all just my opinion, so I'm sorry if your favorite ship isn't here.
5. Kristyn and Hailey - Barbie and the Pink Shoes
Tumblr media
Starting out with a painfully underrated ship from a painfully underrated movie, we've got Kristyn and Hailey. In my opinion, Barbie and the Pink Shoes is the funniest Barbie movie, and these two are a big part of the reason why. They bounce off of each other really well, they have a great and believable daydreamer/down to earth dynamic, and their relationship is really sweet. I mean, it's hard to watch two people navigating an unknwon world together with no one to count on but each other and not end up shipping them. Plus, the scene where Hailey gets captured by the snow queen and Kristyn runs crying through the frozen road always breaks my heart.
4. Mariposa and Catania - Barbie Mariposa and the fairy princess
Tumblr media
I'm gonna be honest, the way the pairings went in the Mariposa franchise actually makes me kinda bitter. And that's because they had these two characters who I think are perfect for each other, but they totally disregard their relationship for the sake of pairing Mariposa with Prince Carlos (who is honestly just a male version of her).
I mean, seriously - Mariposa and Catania have this Romeo and Juliet type of story, being from rival fairy kingdoms and all, and it would definetely have ended in romance if this was a het ship. Catania is the only one who's kind to Mariposa from the start, she bothers to learn about her culture and to make her feel welcome in her kingdom, and she trusts her blindly even when everyone around her tells her she shouldn't. In return, Mariposa listens to Catania about her struggles, and does everything in her power to help her overcome them. They have a lot in common and a lot to teach each other, their relationship development feels very natural, and their bond is what saves the day in the end. But nooo, Barbie has to end up with the prince. Smh.
3. Barbie and Sal-Lee - Barbie Starlight Adventure
Tumblr media
These two probably have the most down to earth relationship in this list, ironically. They have no big dramatic bonding moment, no speech about believing in each other, and their love isn't what saves the universe. It's all very simple and low key, and that's kind of what I like about it.
I love how nervous Barbie is to meet Sal-Lee in the beggining, how it takes a little while for them to get used to each other, and how even in the end there's still a bit of healthy competition between them. You can tell both of them weren't what the other one was expecting, but once they get to know each other, they realize they're something even better, and I think that's really great. I also love how Sal-Lee gets all protective of Barbie, always looking out for her in the end. Overall, their relationship is just very wholesome and comforting. 10/10.
2. Merliah and Kylie - Barbie in a Mermaid Tale 2
Tumblr media
Rivals to lovers, anyone? Truly one of the best relationship tropes out there, and it was executed beautifully in this movie.
Merliah's and Kylie's flirty rivalry in the beggining is everything, and I like how it's not one sided. Like, Merliah isn't the nice "let's all be friends" girl who's being cornered by mean girl Kylie, they're both mutually competitive, which is pretty unique for a Barbie movie. And, of course, as their relationship develops, all of their scenes are just the cutest and the gayest.
Kylie saying "since when does the queen of the waves give up?" when she's pulling Merliah out of that whirpool? Amazing.
The two of them holding hands while swimming together? Beautiful.
Merliah swooning over everything Kylie says, from her plans to her bad jokes? Lovely.
And the whole ending sequence to that movie lives in my head rent free. Merliah is all upset over being a mermaid forever because, in her own words, this means she can't surf with Kylie anymore. Then she turns human again and gets to compete with her one more time, but with love instead of animosity. And finally, the two of them thank each other for everything they got to learn together and agree to share the 1st place trophy. Incredible. Lesbian excellency. Love it with my whole heart.
1. Liana and Alexa - Barbie and the Diamond Castle
Tumblr media
Surprising no one, Alexa and Liana get the 1st place, and for a good reason. To this day, they're the biggest wlw icons from any Barbie movie ever. Everyone has seen the posts talking about how the colours of their dresses are the colours of the lesbian flag and the bi flag, or about how they're the og cottagecore lesbians, or about how there's a scene in the movie where the two of them literally float away from their "love interests" on a rainbow, and they're all 100% right.
But while the sheer amount of gayness these two have is great, I still think this isn't the best part of their relationship. The best part, I think, is just how devoted they are to each other.
Like, we know they regularly write songs about how happy they are together, and both of them consider their relationship to be the best part of their lives. They take care of each other in a way that is so casual but still so meaningful, and you can tell it comes from a place of real love. When they get the chance to make a wish, they don't even have to think before wishing to be together forever. And throughout the movie, we see them risk their lives and rethink their values for the sake of keeping the other one happy and safe.
They're not just my favorite barbie ship, they're one of my favorite ships of all time, and they totally deserve all of the praise they get.

Top 10 Gayest Barbie Movies
As promised, the Top 10 of Barbie movies, ranked by gayness. Granted, I need to preface this with the fact that the majority of Barbie movies can be read quite gay because they are about very affectionate female friendships, or bitter rivalries turned into very affectionate friendships, and most of the movies don’t even have a canon straight romance, which only adds to it.
10. The Three Musketeers
Tumblr media
It’s not the gayest, but I have yet to meet an adaptation of the Musketeers story that wasn’t heavily gay and suggestive toward an OT4, so it had to make this list. Also, while not overly gay in the dynamics between female characters - there are four badass women sword-fighting and kicking ass and Barbie’s outfit from the opening sequence alone is incredibly gay. So this movie, while not necessarily romantically gay, definitely tailored to please the gays.
9. A Christmas Carol
Tumblr media
Let me just say, I did not like this movie, but it was still rather gay, considering that Eden Starling (Barbie)’s main motivation and anchor toward the good is her friend Catherine. Their dynamic was, to me, the only saving grace this movie had.
8. Rock ‘n Royals
Tumblr media
This was incredibly cute in its dynamics. Not only did Courtney (Barbie) have her own rival-dynamic at the rock camp while Erika had her own rival-dynamic at princess camp (and rival dynamics changing to friendship over the course of the movie is one of the Big Gay moves these movies make), when Erika and Courtney met and found someone to open up to and to confide in, it was very heartfelt and warm.
7. Fairytopia: Mermaidia
Tumblr media
As mentioned at the top of this post, many Barbie movies are about rivalries-turned-friendship and you could probably do a Top 10 list of those alone, but only one of those made this list for me - the first one to do this, really, and also the best one.
We have Barbie as Elina, a fairy born without wings who spent her entire first movie fighting to get her wings, and in this movie willingly gives up her wings to trait them for a tail when Nori is in danger.
Nori and Elina start out as “rivals” in a “love triangle”, or so one thinks, while in the end it turns out that Elina was never romantically interested in the abducted prince the two set out to free - she just wanted to go and free her friend. Over the course of the journey, Nori and Elina become friends and save each other’s lives.
6. Mariposa and the Fairy Princess
Tumblr media
Honestly, the entire point of this story was Mariposa (Barbie) and Princess Catania’s relationship. This is a little bit like Romeo and Juliet but with fairies and without death, because they’re from two warring fairy races and Mariposa is sent as an ambassador to try and rekindle things for their people.
Princess Catania is immediately kind toward Mariposa and interested in her. The two share their love for books and history, they exchange expensive and valuable gifts after a date day out in the city.
Tumblr media
And then there is the grand gala, where Catania, due to being too afraid to fly, can’t dance in the air like the other fairies, so Mariposa goes to the ground and asks Catania for a dance. The two become the center of attention of the ball and everyone joins them on the dancefloor in what has been a romantic scene in basically every straight movie featuring a ball ever.
Tumblr media
Also, at the finale of the movie, Barbie traits her dark-pink wings in for lesbian-flag colored wings, which do go so well with the purple of Catania. There’s a theme in these Barbie movies, where Barbie is always pink and very often pink-orange in the lesbian-flag colors, while her best friend slash rival slash female love interest is either blue, or purple, or flat-out in the bisexual flag colors.
What I’m saying is Barbie is a lesbian icon and she has a thing for gorgeous bisexuals. And no, you can not change my mind.
5. Dolphin Magic
Tumblr media
Another movie about Barbie and her mermaid girlfriend! Isla is a mermaid spending the first half of the movie pretend to be human as she is on a mission to free a captive dolphin. It is incredibly charming to watch Barbie show Isla human things (up above her showing Isla human food).
Tumblr media
And honestly, there is no heterosexual explanation for that scene above, because you can climb onto a stone casually as friends, or you can slowly crawl back while your girlfriend crawles toward you in a very very gay way.
Every interaction between them is very... close and downright intimate, not to mention how they look at each other - and then there is the fact that Ken is in this movie, but explicitely introduced as a friend with zero heterosexual romantic subplot in the entire movie.
Tumblr media
4. Star Light Adventure
Tumblr media
This one, just like Dolphin Magic, were hard for me to put this far down at the list because out of all Barbie movies Isla/Barbie and Sal-Lee/Barbie may just be my personal OTPs. But since I’m going by gayness level overall and not personal favorite ship, there are certain movies that have to be higher ranked than them.
Tumblr media
Still, the dynamic between Sal-Lee and Barbie is absolutely amazing, right from that first meeting where Barbie fangirls and is all up in Sal-Lee’s face. The premise is that Sal-Lee and Barbie are part of a five person team sent out to save the galaxy, while Sal-Lee and Barbie are set up with the potential of being rivals since they are hired for the same skill, but while there is some healthy competitiveness they hit it off pretty much from the get-go and Sal-Lee shows quite the protectiveness over Barbie, standing up for her.
Tumblr media
3. The Pink Shoes
Tumblr media
And we’ve officially entered the Top 3. This one has the added bonus of being... double gay, I suppose? For the first time, there’s actually the potential for a male gay romance in this movie too, with the above shown Hilarion/Albrecht.
We have Barbie as Kristin, a ballerina who goes onto a magical adventure with her best friend Hayley. There are a total of four (4) potential male love interests for Barbie in this movie and... yet there is no actual romance. We start the journey with the two girls meeting the two guys above and my brain immediately went “oh yay. Heteronormativity of Two Girls meeting Two Guys and ending up in Two Couples”. But that was not the case, instead the two guys who started out as rivals spend the movie bonding with each other and becoming friends.
All the while, Hayley gets abducted by the evil Snow Queen - which is the part that goes to the love interest in the actual Snow Queen so there is that - and Kristen is absolutely distraught and goes on the journey to save her. The classic “save the damsel in distress” quest that’s usually reserved for lovers.
Tumblr media
2. The Princess and the Pauper
Tumblr media
An absolute Barbie classic - and well-deserving of that second place. I thought I was going to end up making too many GIFs about this one, because it’s so gay but then there is actually a montage in the movie with literally their gayest moments - the awestruck first meeting, dancing in the square together and then getting ready for their wedding (clearly, to each other). Really, this one GIF sums it up perfectly.
1. The Diamond Castle
Tumblr media
I don’t think anyone who watched Barbie movies is surprised by this being number one. It is and always will remain the gayest Barbie movie in existence, until they actually do release one with a canon gay romance in it.
It’s the movie about Barbie as Liana living in a cozy, little cottage with her “best friend” Alexa, sharing a room, making music together, gardening together, finding heart-shaped stones that they turn into engagement necklaces for each other and then going on a journey to free a muse. Really, it’s very gay.
Tumblr media
It’s hard to find a gayer metaphor than a rainbow literally dragging the two girls away from their forced heterosexual partners - and yes, the straight is very forced in this movie, they didn’t even care enough to give the guys individual character design or, you know, a personality.
Tumblr media
And then there is that scene where they get pretty princess dresses in the colors of the lesbian flag and the bisexual flag. I may joke a lot about gay subtext, but you could genuinely not convince me that there wasn’t a gay woman involved in the making of this movie who went as hard on the subtext as she could without anyone calling her out on it. They literally ride off into the sunset together at the end, even leaving their supposed love interests behind.
Tumblr media
And that’s our list. The ten gayest Barbie movies. The color-scheme thing really still baffles me, to be honest. I mean - there’s so many different colors, and yes of course is Barbie pink that one is obvious, but the fact that the girl who is best suited to be her love-interest is always either blue or purple or just both is very peculiar and I like it.

How To Live Together. Part 2: the good news
Taus Makhacheva, 19 a Day (Outside Arabeska wedding hall), 2014
Since last week’s review about the exhibition How To Live Together at Kunsthalle Wien was all doom and gloom, i had to come back with another post and a more encouraging viewpoint.
This time i will thus focus on the artworks that show what makes coexistence possible in times of rapid societal changes, growing economic inequality, forced migrations and a widespread loss of trust in politics.
Intuitively, we already know that the key to more unified societies lies in a mix of resistance, remembrance, borrowing from other cultures, dreams and empathy. Many of the artists in the show illustrate what happens when these abstract notions are turned into real life stories:
Taus Makhacheva, 19 a Day, 2014
Taus Makhacheva, 19 a Day (Laili wedding hall), 2014
Taus Makhacheva, 19 a Day (Niagara wedding hall), 2014
Taus Makhacheva, 19 a Day (Evropa wedding hall), 2014
Installation view: How To Live Together, Kunsthalle Wien 2017, Photo: Jorit Aust: Taus Makhacheva, 19 a Day, Makhachkala, 14.09.2014
Makhachkala is the capital city of the Republic of Dagestan, Russia. Dagestan is famous for its dozens of ethnic groups, none of them forming a majority. Which explains why the country has 13 official languages.
Dagestani weddings are as serious as they are expensive and i’m glad no one has ever invited me to one because traditional celebrations can last for 3 days. Makhachkala counts more than 60 wedding halls. Each of them booked out during peak season (late spring to early autumn.)
With the complicity of local wedding photographer Shamil Gadzhidadaev, Taus Makhacheva spent a whole day crashing as many weddings as possible. At the end of the day, she managed to attend 19 marriage celebrations.
The performance was documented in postcards (each of them available for Kunsthalle Wien visitors to take away.) You see her adopting all the clichéd poses: congratulating the newlyweds, dancing, eating among the other guests, standing proudly next to the wedding gifts, etc. She’s the perfect uninvited guest!
Because of the coexistence of so many cultures into one city, the images of the festivities show a fabulous mix of brides wearing a hijab and a Western ‘princess’ dress, female guests whose style icons are clearly one or all the Kardashian sisters, people taking photos using an iPad, ladies in very conservative outfits, etc. Somehow this blend of oriental/occidental, pop/traditional attires works fabulously and suggests a society that is borrowing from several cultures in order to define its own identity.
Installation view: How To Live Together, Kunsthalle Wien 2017, Photo: Jorit Aust. Willem de Rooij, Bouquet V, 2010
Bouquet V is made of ninety-five species of fresh flowers. The arrangement gives equal importance and visibility to each flower, no mater its colour, size, or provenance. The bouquet symbolises the beauty of diversity, the appeal of mixing individuals of various origins to obtain a stunning foral composition. The same logic should apply to society. Yet, celebration of diversity is still undervalued in many parts of the world. Unless you live in Dagestan of course.
Willen de Rooij‘s floral compositions are also a reference to the Netherlands’ role as a key hub in the international flower trade.
Binelde Hyrcan, Cambeck (video still), 2010
youtube
Binelde Hyrcan, Cambeck (extract), 2010
The latest Mercer Cost of Living Survey calculated that Angola’s capital Luanda is the most expensive city in the world for expats. While living costs for foreigners who often work for the oil industry are slightly higher than New York and San Francisco, the average wage for the local population in Angola is just under $2 a day.
The most moving work in the show is a video by Binelde Hyrcan. The film shows four little boys playing on the beach in Angola. Sitting in the sand, they pretend they are driving around the world in a limousine. In only 2 min 30, the children’s playful chitchat reveals an existence plagued by social inequalities, poverty and families split by migration. “I’m going to America and live in a building; you’re going to stay here and live in a shantytown!”
But the film also talks of hope and dreams as a way to escape the trauma of social suffering.
Kader Attia, Reflecting Memory (Video Still), 2016
Kader Attia, Reflecting Memory (Video Still), 2016
Kader Attia, Reflecting Memory (Video Still), 2016
Kader Attia is also interested in exploring trauma and social anxieties. He believes that the world, too focused on the present to remember the past, is suffering from amnesia.
His film essay Reflecting Memory deals with the idea of trauma and “reparation”. Surgeons, historians, philosophers, psychoanalysts and traumatised people discuss the phenomenon of phantom pain, which amputees feel for their missing body part. The video draws parallels between this neurological condition and the trauma caused by psychological wounds, such as those brought about by war, slavery, colonialism, genocide and terror. They can spread over several generations as an unexpressed sensation of pain. This pain can in turn divide communities and create social tensions.
According to the interviewees, a confrontation with the past and an acceptance that it is part of our genealogy are necessary steps towards “repairing” the pain.
Attia’s film is shown in the screening room next to the space occupied by Sven Augustijnen’s Le Réduit which explores an episode in Belgium’s ruthless exploitation of Congo (i mentioned the work in my previous story). Congo, now The Democratic Republic of the Congo, typifies the fate of an ex-European colony which has experienced much trauma but has never been offered any healing experience.

Johan Grimonprez, Kiss-o-drome (fragment from Shadow World, story written and read by Eduardo Galeano), 2016
In 1980, Judge Manuel Morales ruled that ‘the cinemateographic kiss, in which salivas mix to simply swell the sensuality’ should be banned from the city of Sorocaba in Brazil.
In reaction to the ludicrous edict, almost 2,000 young people marched through the streets and organized a huge ‘kiss-in’ protest. “Never had people kissed so much,” writes in his book Eduardo Galeano in Children of the Days.
Johan Grimonprez‘s short video celebrates the protest with images of a dancing couple and the voice of Eduardo Galeano narrating the Kiss-o-drome demonstration.
Herlinde Koelbl, Italy Catania-Messina (from the series: Refugees), 2016
Herlinde Koelbl’s Refugees photo series highlights under-represented aspects of the life of refugees after they’ve arrived in Europe: their days inside the camps, the most treasured possessions they brought with them, etc. But also the generosity they encounter in the countries of arrival.

How To Live Together also attempts to be more than yet another art exhibition for the usual cultural aficionados. The curators set up a “Community College” offering workshops, tours, brunches, courses and lectures until the end of the show. You can find the programme inside the exhibition booklet.
If you want to know more about the show, have a look at HTLT’s playlist or download the PDF of the exhibition booklet.
How To Live Together is at Kunsthalle Wien until 15 October 2017. The show was curated by Nicolaus Schafhausen, with curatorial assistant Juliane Bischoff

Barbie Fun Fact
Character names from Barbie movies that have been changed in other countries. Brazil ver;
In the cinematographic world it is common that in the dubbing of other countries some things end up being changed, including characters' names, in today's post I will mention some of these adaptations, but focus on Brazilian adaptations.
• Sugar Plum Fairy
Tumblr media
In Brazil, the Sugar Plum Fairy is called "Princesa Caramelo" means "Princess Caramel", I think they made this change from Sugar Plum to Caramel, because in Brazil children wouldn't find it "ameixa doce" which is the translation of sugar plum, so interesting, and they changed fairy for princess because in the movie she looks more like a princess than a fairy. I think it's cute: Princesa Caramelo, lol.
• Elina
Tumblr media
In Brazil, our dear Elina had her name changed to "Fada do Campo" which means "Field Fairy" or "Garden Fairy". It is not known for sure why this sudden name change occurred, but this is how Elina is known in Brazil, and many do not know her real name.
• Catherine Beadnell
Tumblr media
In Brazil, it was not his name that was changed, but her surname, Beadnell was replaced by "Brito", for being a more popular surname, and Beadnell would end up not captivating the public. How do you think that sounds? Catherine Brito!
• Enchantress
Tumblr media
The sweet Enchantress had her name replaced by "Rainha das fadas" which means "Fairy Queen". The reason for the change is also not known for sure, but there is a theory that by translating her name, which would be "feiticeira" implying that she would be a witch, which would make the children confused, because how would the queen have that name when the villain is Laverna.
• Sunburst
Tumblr media
Another character from the fairytopia franchise with a changed name haha. Sunburst had its name changed to "Fada Solar" which means "Sun Fairy". The name change may have been due to the fact that Sunburst is difficult to pronounce, and its translation would be "Reluzente" that wouldn't sound good in portuguese either.
• Mariposa
Tumblr media
As we know Mariposa is a name of Spanish origin, which means butterfly, but in Brazil Mariposa was literally replaced by "Butterfly" Because in Brazil Mariposa means Moth, so they preferred to translate it into English which is more beautiful and the children associated her with a butterfly that is more beautiful than a moth. [extra information: when Prince Carlos calling her, he calls "Linda Butterfly" linda means beautiful, nobody knows the reason why, maybe for make it clear that he has a crush on Mariposa.]
• Catania
Tumblr media
Catania is not a very common name in Brazil, so it was replaced by a similar and more common name, this name is "Catarina" this is a name of greek origin that means pure.
And these are the names of characters that were changed in the Brazilian adaptations, did you like this Fun fact? Like or reblog! Follow for more. ✨💞
