Patio interior, Palacio Presidencial, Quito, 2008.
Until recently Ecuador has been one of the more placid states in Latin America. The recent assassination of a presidential candidate following a campaign rally, an indecisive presidential election, and an alarming increase in gang activity has upset that placidity. Whoever wins, the run-off election in October will bring to office a president with limited political experience and unclear goals.

EDIT: I queued this post before the pro-Bolsonaro attempted coup in Brazil. A post about the failed neo-fascist coup is coming shortly.
Far right former president of Brazil Jair Bolsonaro left the Palácio da Alvorada, the official presidential residence in Brasília in shoddy condition. Bolsonaro was like a lousy subtenant who wrecks your place.
[T]he new first lady got down to business too, dealing with what she called major damage, leaks, and missing artwork and furniture at the presidential palace.
First Lady Rosangela "Janja" da Silva gave Brazil's biggest broadcaster, TV Globo, a tour of the Alvorada Palace, the presidential residence in Brasilia, to highlight what she described as its shoddy condition at the end of far-right former president Jair Bolsonaro's four-year tenancy.
[ ... ]
She showed the camera crew torn rugs, damaged floors, a broken window, a ceiling stained by water leaks, a massive banquet hall left bare of furniture and other issues that would leave normal outgoing tenants nervous over getting their deposits back.
An unknown amount of furniture and artwork from the official residence was missing, damaged or -- in the case of one 19th-century work -- left on the floor, she said.
Electronic equipment was meanwhile left strewn around the library where Bolsonaro used to give his weekly social media live addresses to his far-right base.
Da Silva, 56, said the first couple would carry out renovations to repair the damages and a full inventory of the residence's furniture and art before moving in.
This clip is in Portuguese. In the first half of it First Lady Janja da Silva gives journalist Natuza Nery a tour of some of the damage to the Palácio da Alvorada caused by Bolsonaro.
youtube
You can see water damage, 19th century art objects which were just left on the floor, and even a cracked window. But at least no signs of ketchup thrown at the walls.
I spotted this object in the vid. Anybody know what it is? It looks somewhat like a paper shredder with the top off – though it could be some type of HVAC related device.

Protesters tore down door of Mexico’s presidential palace
A group of protesters have kicked down the door to Mexico’s presidential palace during a demonstration demanding justice for 43 students who disappeared in 2014.
On Wednesday, local television stations showed footage showing several dozen demonstrators using a pickup truck to smash down the entrance to the National Palace while President Andrés Manuel López Obrador was holding a news conference inside.
Law enforcement set up barriers on the palace grounds to prevent protesters from getting inside. Police fired tear gas to disperse the group. López Obrador called what happened “a very clear plan of provocation.” He told reporters:
They would like us to respond violently. We’re not going to do it. We’re not repressors. The door will be fixed, and there’s no problem.
The students, known as “Ayotzinapa 43,” were from the rural Ayotzinapa Teachers College in the southern state of Guerrero.

SEXYPINK NEWS - When thousands of rioters ransacked Brazil's monumental government buildings on Sunday, political leaders condemned the grave attack on the country's democratic fabric. In waves of green and yellow, thousands of far-right supporters of Brazil's ex-leader, Jair Bolsonaro, wreaked havoc on Congress, the Supreme Court and Presidential Palace in Brasilia, leaving a trail of destruction behind them. But the three buildings also held a rich collection of art, some of which suffered irreparable damage. The government has mourned the loss of key parts of the artistic collection, which it said represents an important chapter in its national history.
