I keep thinking about the doors that opened into nothing.
These doors belonged to the hotel facing my childhood home. They were internal doors, wooden, with a dark brown varnish, and unremarkable in every aspect except that each one of them opened into a sheer drop, going up six, seven stories high. The hotel, you see, once, comprised of two linked buildings--but only one of them had survived the earthquake in 1999.
Growing up I mostly considered the doors a fact of life, the way I did with earthquake drills at school and my mother’s deep mistrust of chandeliers ((i) they shake at the slightest tremor with reckless abandon, making you think it’s worse than it is (ii) they might just fall on your head while they are at it) and the neighbourhoods with the prefabrik homes that were meant to be temporary housing to those who lost their houses and yet stayed for years, aging and cramped and unfit for any family to build a life in.
Sometimes I used to fantasise about sneaking into the hotel and finding one of the doors and opening it, just to see what lay on the other side. It did not seem to me that it should--could--be nothing but open air.
And I’ve been thinking about those doors--how things linger long after they are gone. How collective trauma lingers, a locked door that opens into a sheer drop.
I’ve been thinking about how long it takes for a city to rebuild after the last of the rubble has been cleared (it’s so long), and how much better the people in Hatay and Maras and Osmaniye and Antep and Diyerbekir and every other town that has been destroyed deserve than this. How can they not when we’ve had 23 years? 23 years and still here we are and I don’t know what to call this if not murder.
