Anti-perfection: A Rant A pre-thesis project that laid the foundation for my thesis research and experimentation. This zine is an attempt to question and respond to the acute obsession with perfection, order and structure that has been the foundation of my design education and practice. Through the essay, page designs and the format of the zine, I navigate the relationship between structure and meaning while allowing space for chance, serendipity, improvisation, experimentation and intuition. The essay started with a list of words – the cover features words associated with beauty, perfection and order, and the back features words associated with the ugly, imperfect, and the unfit. The page designs are a combination of carefully typeset narrative, gestural compositions created on p5js, and an experiment with ink letterforms. The format of the zine with cuts and folds create a non-linear narrative and chance compositions. So this was inspired by “ophthalmoscope” an instrument used for examining the interior structures of the eye, especially the retina. It consists of a mirror that reflects light into the eye and a central hole through which the eye is examined, so recently when I went to the eye doctor’s for an eye exam I was expecting to see a little green tree this time it was a little red house.
